Yelp
This restaurant is sort of an all-in-one shopping and dining dynasty right along university ave on Madison's west side.
A corner location that seemingly Walgreens wasn't able to Hoover-up in time. Fear not, they secured the next intersection about a mile west, next light, can't miss it.
On the University side, you can get gas at Woodman's or maybe Costco prices, and if you need some bok choy or frozen lo mein noodles, the Asian grocery store is a great option for all sorts of foodstuff. Some is in English for the non Asian language shopper like myself.
FWIW, back at the meat counter, roasted duck is for sale and it's delicious. Though the day I went to buy one the actual duck I was asking for was scooped up by a man who knew the language and said something I presume was about me, since they looked my way, laughed and my duck was suddenly HIS duck. Dick.
But I still got one, a smaller one. A Duck, not a dick.
If your still not finding what you need, there's ALSO a restaurant around the other side of the building, along the Allen Blvd side of the intersection.
It's really big.
I once had take out, which was pretty good I think I recall. Last night was the first time I was actually a dine in customer.
A lot of cars outside but not a whole lot of people inside, but because there were only two waitresses it was busy for them.
Ten minute wait in the bar was pleasant.
It was kind of amusing, nearly everyone among the staff (bartender and the two waitresses) I saw were Caucasian. One lady who I'll take a chance and make the assumption was both Chinese as well as probably the owner.
There was a table with what I believe were an Indian (India) couple, two tables had Asian families, a very attractive black woman and her man, and a couple who it turned out, white folks, who my wife and daughter recognized that they met last summer up in Northern Wisconsin.
Jumping now to the food.
Four of us and four different orders plus an appetizer plate that a selection of, if I recall correctly, four selections: Butterfly ten okra shrimp (split open to emulate giant prawns. Still not even actually large)
Tempura calamari, (my daughter Nicole sucked them all down before I could tell her they weren't actually onion rings!) char sui (bbq pork) and some very strange looking egg rolls.
Ok there were five items. I now remember the pot stickers. They were great.
The char sui was not delicious looking. In fact it didn't even look as through they were placed on the plate to be a visual component. Withered and sad looking. 6 slices cut in half. They tasted good, but were something a Chinese chef I imagine wouldn't acknowledge being the one whom both made them OR plated them.
The strange looking egg rolls, while really odd looking, did taste good. But if I was told the dishwasher kid was told to make some, as practice, then serve them to someone white people, I'd say he succeeded in the taste, but barely got a passing mark for appearances I would say , "it shows"
Shrimp lo mein. That is what my daughter Nicole ordered. It was good. She refused to eat it, although did eat some of the shrimp.
My son order cashew chicken. Best item of the four entrees. Really tasty.
My wife ordered ginger beef. Though it should've been named Long Green Beans Beef. As there were a surplus of the beans. Another solid tasty choice.
I thought I'd ordered Singapore Beef, but the receipt says it's Governor Beef. It was very spicy. Which I loved. It was indeed quite good, but lacking in broccoli. I think I am close in saying there were 6 fliers of broccoli sliced in half lengthwise. 12 pieces. All in all, the entire experience was enjoyable.
I love Chinese food. I get take out usually at least once a week from an assortment of nearby places.
As I was sitting in the bar at the beginning of the night however, I was realizing, I don't think I have actually eaten IN a Chinese restaurant in 20 plus years! I've been in probably every Thai restaurant in Madison, a couple Japanese and one Laotian. Even a Tibetan. (My friend Tharton's Little Tibet 4stars!) as well as a Vietnamese place three time just last summer. But last night was in fact the only actual Chinese restaurant I've sat down and had dinner in the entire 20 years in Madison.
I'll have to return. Next time I'll order the duck IN THE RESTAURANT. Hopefully I'll get the one I ask for.
I thought I took photos. I guess I didn't.
