How Filipino Adobo Became a Southeast Alaska Staple | Eater

"A downtown Juneau restaurant where chef de cuisine Rachel Barril explores Filipino–Alaskan fusion, drawing on her Alaskero heritage and local ingredients. Specials have included kare kare made with foraged mushrooms and beach greens and crispy king salmon collars dressed escabeche-style, translating traditional Filipino forms into a Pacific Northwest fine-dining context." - Jennifer Fergesen

"This Italian wood-fired pizza restaurant in downtown Juneau has a stack of James Beard nods. Try the not-to-miss specials by executive chef Beau Schooler and chef de cuisine Rachel Carrillo Barril, fresh seafood in the summer (particularly for wood-fired salmon off-cuts), and a crowd-pleasing pasta pomodoro made with miso. Look for innovative pastries that incorporate Filipino flavors like ube and coconut and creative mocktails. Wine and beer. One of the best dining experiences in Juneau! The lads making pizzas with the wood fire oven are true experts - delicious dough, perfectly crisp, with just the right amount of topping. The crab gnocchi was pillowy and decadent. The hot honey cauliflower was unique and delicious. Chocolate tart was precisely made and smooth. Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Very welcoming atmosphere and the food and service were impeccable. Highly recommend!

This place was amazing. We had heard about it online and heard that I had been nominated for a James Beard award. So we walked to it at the end of the night before we got on our cruise ship. We didn’t have a reservation so we were able to eat in the small area by the restroom and a cute little side table area. It was wonderful because we just wanted to try the pizza and have a beer. Crisis are great. Service was great. Pizza was wonderful. The actual restaurant is adorable with a big Woodfire pizza oven and fun artwork. I was very impressed that in the super packed restaurant we were able to walk in the street sit down at a little table and eat our pizza. The lady in charge of the kitchen was awesome super friendly. Everything was spotless and clean. Very impressed. Easy to access anywhere in town. Short walk.Very unassuming.

Google
Best in Juneau in terms of quality culinary execution and skill. Great use of ingredients, and creativity. This would be a very good restaurant anywhere, and it is great in Juneau. Dining room is a little loud. Sitting at the bar is fun. Deli is a little less warm feeling, but quieter and easier for conversation. Great gelato, take and bake etc. I really like the take home stuff from the deli. I miss the old pastry chef, but they still have good desserts. Eat here. Check the specials.

Google
The restaurant is my absolute favorite place in Altea. I've been here 4 times in total and I hope to have many more visits. I've tried my way all through the Pizza to the Carne and the additional Pasta. Everything was always with fresh ingredients in a perfectly timed manner. During our latest visit we had Abby attending to all our needs. She was such a friendly server and is very fluent in English. No order got wrong and all drinks and food arrived even with our extra wishes in consideration. In Bunco Al Lupo is worth your time and money.

Google
Best spaghetti and meatballs ever. Fresh made pasta. Authentic fire pizza oven. The hardest part is figuring out if what to actually eat because everything is good. There's no wrong answer when it comes to the food here.

Google
Enjoyed this restaurant! Got the shells and cheese with the smoked chinook and there was a good portion of fish. First time trying chinook and it was quite yummy. Also the meatburner pizza was a hit. Reasonable prices for a nice restaurant.

Google
Pizza: good ingredients, good preparation. Oven is a bit too hot for that style of pizza napoletana. Cook it, dont burn it. No garlic oil unless you call it garlic pizza. Margherita is without garlic. Cold cuts and cheese appetizer: not happy with that at all. Prosciutto slice broken and not good looking. Salame gone, bad color. Cheese tiny pieces, you can barely taste them. vegetables and bread were nice! Thunderdome: good and crunchy In Juneau this is a very good restaurant to visit, italian based cuisine, not far from real Italian!

Google
We were there at noon that is basic deli food but was able to get pizza and chocolate cheese desert … all was delicious.

Yelp
Best food I've had in Alaska. Fresh pasta, wood fired pizza oven, amazing and unique flavors. Server was excellent, Tom, I think. Great positive atmosphere & happy customers. Will definitely be a regular stop when we're in Juneau. Highly recommend to anyone who likes pasta or pizza. Good beers, looked like a good wine selection, even had some fun mocktails. Excellent Affogato & Cannoli desserts. Pricey, but totally worth it.

Reba R.

Yelp
Outstanding dining experience. The food was exceptional. The ambiance was warm and friendly. 10/10 Cannot wait to come again.

Yelp
In Bocca is one of my favorite restaurants in town. It is clean, the food is delicious, and there is excellent service every time I come. It is a bit pricey, but the food is great. I've come here about once a month with my husband, some coworkers or friends. Highly recommend to make a reservation though. It gets really busy, not super loud, but they only open in the evenings. If not, you will be sitting at the bar stools. Literally everything I've tried here has been tasty. For appetizers, the thunder dome is very exciting because it is a huge bread dome, as the name states. I also love the Cesar salad (I know, a salad is super basic but it really is one of the best salads I've ever had). I am not even a crouton fan but the way they make it is soo good. You gotta try it at least once! For main dishes, all the pasta dishes are pretty solid. It tastes like they made it all of it by hand. My other favorite thing to get is the Steak Jillian, which is surf n' turf with a flavorful green sauce. The desserts are also great. It sucks they change every now and then, I wish they always had the ube panna cotta. But my favorite dessert is probably the lemon tart. Not too sweet and not too sour, and the crust is perfect. I'd eat it every day if I could. I will keep coming back here!

Yelp
A wonderful addition to the Juneau food scene. Wood fired pizza and inspired breads and pasta. Not exactly east coast or northern Italian sauce but great for Alaska and good enough for an Italian meal for this East coast family. Pizza is the star here, classic wood fired, great crust, bubbly cheese and lots of inventive options. Our party also enjoyed meatballs that were excellent (5 stars), bolognese (5 stars) and Alaskan scallops in a spicy pasta. All very good. Wine and beer list is small but thoughtfully curated. Enjoyed an excellent anchorage IPA and a Napa Valley Cabernet, all at a reasonable price. Best in town.

Yelp
What a gem to have in Juneau! I believe this used to be the site of Silver Bow Bagels but now it's been tranformed into an Italian centric, pasta and pizza restaurant. Much press on this place as the chef is a James Beard nominated finalist for best chef in the Northwest this year (2024). Stuff tried: Thunderdome: do not sleep on this! What I gather to be the same dough as their pizza, this puffy dome of bread is served with is basically with an enormous pile of cloud like fluffy butter. Carby heaven! Meatballs: hefty portion sprinkled with cheese. Pro-tip, make a meatball sando by folding the meatball into some of that thunderdome bread! Steak Jillian: one of tonight's specials. Boneless rib eye topped with shrimp scampi and scampi sauce. Very rich! Surf and turf. Very nice and cozy atmosphere with a staff that is very friendly. Next time I will try the pizzas which all looked amazing. I don't think you can go wrong with anything you order here.

Yelp
Great food, great service relaxed low key setting. Apps are huge and great to share. I had a pizza, perfect for two with a split salad. Friends had spaghetti w meatballs, looked awesome. Clean plates all the way around!!! Don't miss it. Nice wine and beer selection too. Enjoy!!

Yelp
Always love to go here the food is amazing and the service is topnotch as well highly recommend if you are in Juneau and get the Thunderdome

Cyndy I.

Yelp
Wonderful food and service. Love the whole feeling inside! Can't wait to go again. Can't get enough of this place.

Yelp
This place is sooo good. It's a must try when you are in town. Everything top notch. Run don't walk

Yelp
No wonder it's named in NYT 2023 Restaurant List. This was a delightful meal! Had to have the Thunderdome - a pizza that puffs up into a dome, adorned with garlic butter and the lightest, airiest whipped butter ever. The "Cheesy shells with Smoked Salmon" was so fresh and delicious - homemade pasta cooked to perfection, lots of rich smoked salmon, topped with bread crumbs and a generous amount of fresh dill made for a beautifully flavored and textured dish. The Scallops had an amazing sauce with terrific bite as it hits your palate, full of rich flavor. The bread pudding for dessert was large, with a perfect airy texture and a rich caramel sauce, and mercifully no rum flavor. The mocktail "Real Fake Gin & Tonic" had great aromatic flavors. The staff were all hard-working and really added to the experience. A really nice and satisfying night out.

Yelp
Our flight was delayed and we had the last reservation slot for the evening! I called ahead and they were so sweet to hold our spot! We were only in town one night and were determined to go to -In Bocca Al Lupo. The food was amazing! My coworker had the shells and cheese with salmon and said it was the best "adult Mac & cheese" she's ever had! I enjoyed the spaghetti and meatballs and couldn't even finish the portion was so huge! I was so sad to leave the leftovers! They paired our dinner with amazing wines that we have since purchased for our regular rotation! We even got lucky to have our flight delayed the next day and were able to grab their homemade sourdough with another glass of wine! The place is a great vibe with amazing service, people, wine and FOOD! Highly recommend and can't wait to go back

Yelp
This is my favorite Juneau Restaurant. I'm always impressed by the quality of the food. While I no longer live in Juneau, I make it a point to make a reservation here every chance I get. The staff is attentive and helpful. You will not be disappointed!

Scott K.

Yelp
Service was great, food was well prepared. Thunder dome very fresh and flavorful. Pasta specials all delicious.

Kristin Y.

Yelp
Normally love this restaurant, but it was really not great tonight. Pea flower lemonade- God awful- just don't do it to yourself. Seafood dish ( a daily special ) had so much pesto that basil was all you could taste. No cannoli for desert. ( the whole reason I went ). Forced to download Yelp app to confirm reservation. Being forced to download an app to go to a nice restaurant just sucks. I don't need yelp to add to the list of folks mining my data. Will probably go back eventually- but not for quite a while

Yelp
The thunderdome (instead you didn't read all the other reviews) is a must! The Caesar salad is a must, especially because of how they serve the croutons. I will leave it at that. I didn't like my pizza entree and would actually rather go to Island Pub for that. Now, I did talk to locals and I guess I missed the mark by not ordering the spaghetti. If I go back to Juneau, I will give that a try. It is incredibly loud in the restaurant which makes it fun and lively but very tight so get to know your neighbors and be in a chatty mood :)

Yelp
Everything was great! Superb atmosphere and everything is made in house! Servers always had a smile on their faces. Energetic service!!!

Yelp
Bomb!!! The ice cream is so good. Everything is made in house. Rachel the head chef is amazing and Nicole one of the waitresses is great too :) Thank you

Yelp
Food here is amazing and fresh! The waiter definitely has a passion for food at the restaurant because she spoke so excitedly about it. That's definitely a good sign. I got the thunder dome and it's basically a dome shaped pizza dough with a light garlic whipped cream. It was delicious. The pesto pasta was also yummy, it was so bright green and just so visually appealing. And the sausage in it was so flavorful. They also have such a creative mocktail menu with alcohol-free gin and tonic. It tasted of juniper berries and was very crisp and refreshing.

Roxannr S.

Yelp
We went there for my birthday tonight and ordered the broccolini appetizer which was tasty and a Caesar salad which was very good- not too many croutons and plenty of garlic. Then we had the Leeking Goat Pizza and it was very nice. For dessert was the citrus tart which was amazing. A very special birthday dinner!
google avatar

Rob M.

Yelp
Such great food and atmosphere. We ordered a few pizzas which were all amazing. We also ordered the special which was a scallop pasta dish, which was incredible!! I'd highly recommend this!!!

Yelp
This is supposed to be the best dining experience in Juneau. It definitely lived up to the reputation! They have a nice wine selection which is well thought out but not overwhelmingly long. The roasted head of cauliflower was delicious, and this is speaking as someone who wouldn't normally gravitate towards cauliflower on a menu - something about the sweetness of the balsamic reduction paired with the spice paired with the accompanying pickled carrots and celery blended really well. The pastas we tried were also delicious; my favorite was the pomodoro sauce with meatballs. The pomodoro was light and fresh and crisp and complimented the heaviness of the meatballs. For dessert we got the raspberry mascarpone tart, and again, as someone who doesn't usually like mascarpone, I was pleasantly surprised. The mascarpone was not too heavy or overbearing, and the raspberries were impressively fresh and sweet One interesting thing about this restaurant is that because it is downtown, you get people wandering in from cruises debating whether this location is worth the wait or if they should "just go to Domino's"...very, very different pizza experiences indeed! The wait staff were very helpful and attentive. I would definitely return here!
google avatar

Rachael B.

Yelp
We were super excited to try this place since it was on the NYT best pizza list! We were not disappointed. Got the cauliflower appetizer which was honestly the best part of the meal. It was so delicious, the hot honey and blue cheese combo was *chefs kiss*. We got the funghi pizza which was pretty good! Service was great and fast, which was helpful as we had to catch our boat!
google avatar

Falcon C.

Yelp
I would have liked sides with my steak. Got tiresome. Was very good but I would rather had a 8oz with shrimp and I was expecting noodles or something with it. The pizza crust was the best. Friendly service and a bit noisy but nice atmosphere. If I did return I'd get the spaghetti and meat balls
google avatar

Emmit P.

Yelp
Never in my life did i think i would enjoy eating an entire head of cauliflower Pasta was cooked to a perfect al dente that i didn't think was possible Pizza was so good i wanted to get up and personally shake the chefs hand I came to Juneau on my first cruise experience and got sea sickness i didn't think imaginable, but this restaurant single handedly made it worth it so far
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely hands down the best place to eat in Juneau! Every time I've gone the atmosphere is great, service is wonderful and the food is amazing!
google avatar

Lakota H.

Yelp
Enjoyed a wonderful meal with good conversation as the place wasn't too loud, although it was fairly full. The food was delicious and all the staff were busy friendly, and attentive while serving our meals in efficient time. I appreciated the gluten-free options, and the variety of specialty drinks available both alcohol and non-alcoholic. Our dessert was so scrumptious as we couldn't decide, so we ordered the Affogato and dinner gelato.. we shared them, which made a spectacular finish to our meal. Can't wait to go back.!
google avatar

Dana H.

Yelp
Best pizza I have ever had in my life!!!! I got the Funghi pizza with pepperoni and I added a little salt . I didn't love the scallops pasta but it was still tasty!
google avatar

Sarah N.

Yelp
Exceptional Neopolitan pizza. Such a surprise in this outback area. The green salads were delicious and generously portioned as well. Note that the ice cream is not gelato, but does seem homemade with unique flavors. This place is definitely worth your time in Juneau.
google avatar

John F.

Yelp
Dined here with a party of 20. We did a prefix menu which included Caesar salad, meatball appetizers and incredible pasta with scallops, antipasto salad and a New York style brick oven pizza. For the main course we had steak Diane with sautéed shrimp, chicken Alfredo, and spaghetti with meatballs. For dessert, we enjoyed a pistachio cannoli with a chocolate truffle ice cream on the side. I enjoyed absolutely everything that was served and this place will be high on my list for the next time I'm in Juneau, Alaska

P M.

Yelp
We came here for dinner and had the Caesar salad, the margherita pizza, the meatball pizza, the Alfredo with chicken, and the scallops fra diavolo. The salad was so good! I wish we could also have tried the green salad but it would have been too much food. The pizzas were each so delicious! I liked the Alfredo but I definitely added black pepper to it. The scallop pasta was probably my favorite. The scallops were sweet and the pasta was perfectly flavored and cooked. The service was very good. The waitress was attentive and very nice. The ambience is great here - casual but chic, matches the food perfectly! We will be back when we are In Juneau again!
google avatar

Yelp
We were told by a dude at Devils Club Brewing that this is pretty much the "best restaurant in Juneau" and...they aren't necessarily wrong! This place reminds me a lot of Hearth in Anchorage, except a bit more fancy in some ways (the food) and a bit less fancy in others (the drinks). We didn't have a reservation, but were able to sneak in. The ambiance is moody and cozy, and the tables are spaced pretty close together. The pizzas are a bit on the pricey side, but worth it. Lots of unique ingredients and ingredient combination. The pizza is Neapolitan-style (really hot oven where pizza is put in for an extremely short period of time, resulting in some char), a style some people call "authentic" but which I call "one of the many ways one can make-uh-peesa-pie". I got the one with leeks and goat cheese, I think it was called Leeky Goat? Anyway, it was really good! Only criticism of this place is that I wish they had more local beers on tap! (Or any? Maybe they didn't have tap beer, I can't remember.) PS: another reviewer warns that spicy things are too spicy for him, I love hot/spicy food and I did not find this to be the case.

Yelp
Made a reservation during our stop at Juneau on our Alaskan cruise. We wanted to try something different and saw this on triple D. Started with a shrub soda that was really refreshing. The interior was very intimate and calming with dim lighting. The art work definitely catches your attention. The cauliflower was really tasty and the service was top notch. Our server knew we first timers and guided us through the different menus. Everything is made in house and super fresh. A really great dining experience. Felt like we found a hidden gem in Juneau.
google avatar

Kaylin C.

Yelp
We had a lovely time at Bocca! Not only did they accommodate a last minute addition of an extra 2 people to our reservation, but they were forgiving when we arrived without the additional two (who couldn't join due to illness). Service was swift and professional. The restaurant itself is beautiful and a bit of an oasis in Juneau. It is invitingly warm, well lit, and intimate but without feeling cramped. Our group has a tendency of ordering as much off the menu as possible and not a single dish was disappointing. From the charcuterie plate, garlic bread, and caesar salad (all with their own interesting twists) to their homemade pasta and pizza - we all left full and incredibly happy with our experience. Views of the chefs doing their thing was just an added bonus. Thank you Bocca team for the lovely evening. We will certainly be back!

Karen S.

Yelp
Read about this in NY Times as one of top pizza places in US and, wow, we were going to be in Juneau so we made reservations! It was very good but not sure how it's one of the best in the US. Had the Juneau Greens salad which was really rather bland. The rigatoni bolognese was excellent as was the Salsiccia pizza.
google avatar

Roberta D.

Yelp
Excellent dinner! We had Caesar salad, sausage pizza and lemon tart. All were exceptional. The pizza crust is authentic and delicate to chew right to the edge. Perfect amount of cheese and fresh sauce. They keep it simple but do things right all the way through the homemade lemon tart for dessert.
google avatar

Cindy C.

Yelp
We ordered take out pizza in a really rainy day in Juneau. The margarita pizza was quit good.
google avatar

Kelsey C.

Yelp
Absolutely incredible. We are locals and we consider ourselves so lucky to have such incredible food & service in our town. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Unparalleled pizza, pasta, and specials!

Nancy A.

Yelp
Out of control delicious. I'm a very picky Italian. this place knocked it out of the park. Everything we ate was so well constructed, layer upon layer! Don't miss this place for anythin. And the staff made us feel like we were at home :) Thanks for the great and memorable dinner!

Debbie K.

Yelp
The food and service was great. I'm vegan and had a beautifully prepared spice Cauliflower!

Yelp
I saw this restaurant on an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, so when I scheduled an Alaskan cruise that included Juneau as a stop, I wanted to try it. It's a small-ish spot, tucked away on a small street downtown. We began with an order of Thunder Dome. How could you not order something with that name. It's their airy pizza crust allowed to bake and rise into a ... dome. The dough was perfectly cooked, crusty and chewy at the same time, accompanied by whipped butter lighter than whipped cream. I had a delicious pizza and my dining partner had pasta with a delightful rabbit sausage, which came in an unbelievably green pesto. It's not often that I expect to be fortunate enough to return to Juneau, but this spot would be on my list every time. The ambience is farmhouse/family. We had a great view of the pizza oven. Staff was enthusiastic and friendly. Bravo!
google avatar

Sara G.

Yelp
The food was so delicious I forgot to take pictures ‍. The portions are very large and because I wanted to try multiple menu items a co worker and I shared meals. We got the wood fire cauliflower appetizer for the table, the heat sneaks up on you but is so tasty and a great way to start the meal. We shared the funghi pizza which was so tasty the only negative was the whole chunks of shallot that were on it but if you like mushrooms this pizza will not disappoint, we also shared the spaghetti with meatballs. The pasta is freshly made in house and the meatballs were so light and delicious. Absolutely a must visit if you're in the area and looking for something to satisfy the Italian craving.
google avatar

Andrea T.

Yelp
Excellent food and service! Love the homemade pasta and sauce. The Thunder Dome is amazing!
google avatar

Eric A.

Yelp
Busy. Difficult to hear the staff. Some wait staff were super friendly, others a bit standoffish. Food was very good quality. Only minor complaint was the cheese bread (Thunderdome). Just a mess to eat. Bread not cut. Melting whipped butter all over the place. Don't get me wrong, delicious, but I'd never order again but who wants melted butter all over their hands/clothes. Next trip to Juneau will return. It's worth the wait (except the Thunderdome butter bath).
google avatar

Andrea A.

Yelp
Y'all. The Salmon with Shells dish is incredible!!! It's my hands down favorite at Al Lupo. The creaminess of the cheese, richness of the salmon and then the pasta.. oh my. A perfect meal out in Juneau for consists of the Thunderdome for an app, followed by The Juneau greens salad & this delicacy as my main course. The only thing that makes the food even better is the eclectic ambiance of Al Lupo & their impeccable service.
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
One of the best places in town. Fresh house made pasta and pizza dough. Wood fired oven. Excellent preparations. Never a bad meal.
google avatar

Will V.

Yelp
We had the good fortune to have a group reservation on the Friday night after The New York Times named In Bocca al Lupo one of its top 50 picks in the nation for dining in 2023. Service was excellent: warm, patient, and efficient. Atmosphere was lively, with some good old school hip hop in the background. Our group sat at a long table by the kitchen and deli, so we had that space to ourselves. Choices from a good wine list plus nicely mixed mocktails started the evening. Appetizers were great: the thunderdome, inflated pizza dough with a whipped ricotta spread and garlic, was a showstopper. The antipasti plate was terrific as were the meatballs and local greens bibb salad. There were pizzas all over the table and they all looked good, but for entrees what I remember most was this epically good housemade pasta with a light and super tasty tomato sauce and the freshest scallops you've ever tasted. Amazing! For desserts, the bread pudding was a massive portion and quite good, but I fell in love with the other option: olive oil vanilla soft serve ice cream. I wouldn't have ordered it to be honest - I've never blended olive oil with my desserts - but it was brought to the table and it was out of this world good: vanilla soft serve topped with olive oil and a bit of sea salt. I went back just for this item - taking it to go - the next night. This was a seriously great, enjoyable dinner: highly recommended whenever you are in beautiful Juneau!
google avatar

Alby S.

Yelp
Always good food! Atmosphere was good weight staff was awesome. One of our favorite places!

Matthew ..

Yelp
The food was very tasty, our waitress was prompt and polite. My wife and I ordered multiple pasta dishes between this visit and last, both times the portions were not the best. For the price they charge you should expect a little more, maybe even 1 slice of crusty bread!
google avatar

ReAnn J.

Yelp
Dang...this place is delish Don't miss the Thunderdome!! We loved our pasta dishes and will come back to try the pizza
