The 22 Best Restaurants in Santa Fe, New Mexico | Eater

"Chef Kewal Singh Dhindsa took his love of classic South Indian food from Los Angeles to New York to the Caribbean before settling in Santa Fe. At India House, where the dining room is expansive and the service immaculate, try anything from the tandoor oven, like the chicken wings broiled over mesquite and mixed with yogurt, garlic, and ginger. Don’t be shy if you like heat; ask for recommendations, or alter your favorite dishes with additional spice. India House will go above and beyond to make you sweat. There is also a lunch buffet all week that is more expensive than typical counterparts, but the quality is top-notch and worth the money. Vibe check: The restaurant is a bit formal, so dress up for dinner. For lunch, come as you are." - Karen Fischer

Everything was spot on. Celebrated my birthday here and they didnt hesitate to throw in something special and sing for me as well. We enjoyed the mix tandoori grill, lamb curry, rice with peas, cheese naan, and the appetizer combo. So much food, but all absolutely delicious.

Very nice restaurant, great, attentive, fast customer service. The food was hot, fresh and delicious! We went to their buffet for lunch and they were extremely busy. The was no parking so we parked by the road. They are a little bit pricey. We paid over $80 for two adults and a child and two mango Lasses. Everything is expensive nowadays though. If you love Indian food and in Northern NM this is a great place to eat.

We stopped at this place en route to CO. We stopped here only because they were the only one to open earliest on the area. I am glad we didn’t try anything else. These guys have really set the bar high when it comes to Indian cuisine. If you are in the area, I would recommend give them a try and you won’t be disappointed. Number of veg items in the buffet was few compared to the non veg items, but each item was excellent. Only recommendation I have for them is if they can increase the number of veg items in the buffet.

This is in my opinion the best restaurant in Santa Fe New Mexico! The Indian food here is outstanding 👌 the best so far that I have tried and I have the privilege of visiting Indian restaurants all over USA and overseas. The chicken Tikka Massala is my favorite thee sauce has no competition with others and I highly recommend it. The lamb dishes are good too. They cook the dishes with fine ingredients and you can request the level of spicy you want. The chicken Bryani is my other favorite 😍. Their manu offers a variety of dishes all good. Great and attentive customer service something not found overall restaurants in Santa Fe which also makes this my favorite place to eat. Thanks to the staff at India House your restaurants are a 5 Stars!

I visited Indian house today with my step dad and I want to say that the service was amazing! Very polite, patient, and just nice. They were adding water anytime it would get half empty which was very nice of them I really appreciated it. The wait for food was long but it was due to the food that we ordered so I don’t think it’s a problem. My dish was a chicken kimbab, if I remember right, and it was descent, a little but dry but it was okay but my Step dads wings (sorry I don’t remember how the dish was called) was delicious and the bread with rice was so good too!!! The restaurant on the outside doesn’t look as good as the inside, the inside was so cozy and clean and I was really surprised and the price was just right which was a very nice and relieving surprise :) Overall a good experience and I hope I will come back to try something else. Thank you!

We went there for their buffet lunch, delicious food!! Service is very good (drinks, buffet is self serve, of course). The buffet has meat, as well as vegetarian dishes, plus a salad and fruit section. And desserts. Located in busy Cerrillos Road, once you are inside you will enjoy your dining experience.

Google
I was really impressed with the entire dining experience. I enjoyed the setup of the buffet as it was super fancy. The food was very good and there was a wide variety. I particularly enjoyed the fine table cloths, napkins, and glasses. You can tell the employees and owner take a lot of pride in their restaurant!

Google
When I was much younger I worked for a family from India. They paid me with a place to stay and a meal every evening. The food here is as delicious as I remember. The culture of the people who work here make the service and quality outstanding! The art and design of the dining area fill it with an exquisite quiet dining experience.

Yelp
The best meal we had in Santa Fe! Unbelievably fast and fresh and delicious Truly beat the pants off of the Mexican spots we visited We had the baigan bharta and vegetable korma and by far some of the best we have had around the country

Yelp
Let's start with what's good about India House. The place is very clean and looks inviting. The staff is courteous and the food is fresh. We had rice, garlic naan, channa masala, a lentil soup, a chai tea and an eggplant dish. More than enough for a meal and to bring some home for later. Now, this place has problems... Pricing is higher than the average Indian restaurant by at least 20%. One might expect that they will live up to their claim of "fine dining" but they do not. It's good indian food but it's not great, and it's not fine. I've had worse, and I've also had better. Maybe the lunch buffet is where it's at? In any case, my hubby and I came during the evening and the food was fair but worth paying extra for. Furthermore, the chai tea was extremely bland. It was milk with a pinch of chai. It was the worst chai I've ever had, and I have had a lot of chai. I drank a couple of sips and left it on the side of the table. A waiter came by and asked if everything was good, and I explained that the chai was a bit bland, not really great. He just smiled and walked away. Alright... Very helpful. A person who seemed to be a manager came to wait on us at one point and asked the same question. I asked if it's possible to make the chai spicier because it's basically just a cup of hot milk. And he said he'll see if he can make it again. He then left. Alas, he never made it again. And at the end of it, I was charged for the hot milk. Food quality is important. But so is customer service. If your food is average but your customer service is impeccable, then your diners might forgive you and look the other way from time to time. But if your customer service is poor, or if you ignore issues brought up (twice) by your diners, then they won't look the other way, even if the rest of the food is alright. The moral of the story is, you can't ignore feedback and hope it goes away. It won't go away. It's here. Right now. Anyway, that's that! It's not a bad place but expect to pay more for average food and don't expect much if your meal or drink doesn't turn out the way it should. You get what you get at India House.
google avatar

Yelp
I didn't think you could make bland Indian food but everything at the lunch buffet was lacking in any type of flavor. It all LOOKED great and service was good, but the food just wasn't.

Yelp
The best in Albuquerque! Fresh delicious made from scratch by the matriarch and served with graciousness by the rest of the family. CLEAN there is another Indian restaurant one street down in same area and they are NOT the same. This place is the best! Recommend 100% the fresh brewed Indian tea is absolutely my favorite definitely try it.

Yelp
This place is still amazing. Everything is wonderful, and of all the Indian food I've had it's my favorite. I got vegetable korma with rice :) and riata w garlic naan.

Yelp
Amazing service, amazing food and I went at night so the vibes were calm and collected for sure! My lovely best friend and I decided to try India House Cuisine of India on a whim after a long road-trip drive. The service again was astounding and recommended the dishes in the photo provided. Highly recommend if sharing a passion for food with friends and family and even for self discovery! Bismillah!

Yelp
India House is hands-down, the best Indian food in Santa Fe. Everyone knows it, and everyone tells each other. Before going to shop at Smith's, I always go there to enjoy the buffet or get a individual item. The staff is so kind and I love love chatting with them! The ambience is also inviting and the restaurant always smells so delicious! Writing this reminds me that I haven't been there for a couple weeks, so I need to go this week for sure!
google avatar

Yelp
Quick, efficient service, decent ambiance and vibrant flavors- this hole in the wall restaurant delivers 100% on the promise of a hearty, delicious Indian meal. A big shout out to Mickey for being an awesome host!

Yelp
The chicken curry was delicious! Top tier customer service! If you want a good meal I highly recommend.

Yelp
Ehhhhhhhh. I don't know. I've done a bit of traveling and have had great Indian food, bad Indian food, and in between. This just wasn't very good. We ordered the Saag Paneer, which is one of our faves, and it was so salty. The paneer was also a bit over cooked. We also ordered the Chicken Makhani. It tasted like Chicken Alfredo with a smoky flavor and something else. I don't know. I was not a fan. I am nervous to try anything else, but I will probably go again at some point since there's just not much Indian around Santa Fe. I do want to give the tandoori dishes a try so hopefully that's better.

Kathy M.

Yelp
This place has the best service, friendly people and the man the best food and drinks. It's one of my favorite places. Their food is top notch. It's a must have. Don't judge it before you try it. A Friend took me there one time. I got hooked. Took my boyfriend there now he's hooked. Gotta try it. Their lentil soup is so good. They have the buffet from 11-2:30 and so worth the price. You will not be disappointed I can promise you that. The atmosphere, the environment. The workers. Excellent!!! 5 star fancy inside beautiful. So welcoming the owner is awesome. Very nice!!!
google avatar

Brenda D.

Yelp
Great food, loaded with traditional flavors. Service impeccable. Nice decor relaxing. Everything you would look for in an Indian meal.
google avatar

Kristen B.

Yelp
Went in for the lunch buffet and we were all quite happy. It was a big spread with naan, rice, pakoras, beef meatballs, chicken makhani, aloo saag, tandoori chicken, lentils, a salad bar and desserts. It's 25 dollars a person so it's a bit pricey but their whole menu is on the higher side for Indian. However it's a nice place, service was excellent, and food was good so it's not outrageous. My favorite with was the dash and makhani but it was all very good especially considering it was a buffet. The kheer was not the best I've had before it didn't have any nuts or fruits which I'm used to having and I couldn't see or taste any saffron. The mango pudding I believe was a mix and they add canned cocktail fruits to it. The desserts were both pretty average but not bad. Overall I'd definitely go back.
google avatar

Yelp
I enjoy the lamb kebabs. Very nice and clean. Very nice and helpful.Would bring friends and family.

Yelp
Had another great lunch buffet with excellent service and a great selection of food. The mango pudding this visit was my favorite new find. Lunch buffet is from 11am to 230 pm. A very unique and delicious place to eat in Santa Fe.

Yelp
We were traveling through Asante Fe in our Motorhome looking for a restaurant- The plan was to get some southwest style food, but saw India House, and it won out! As soon as you walk in the door, you can feel and smell that this is going to be a great meal. The inside of restaurant is elegant, and so are the welcoming Kind and beautiful staff. Brian and I know good Indian food, and we were surprised to be pleasantly surprised by this amazing food! Every dish was how you would envision that dish to be- So flavorful, plenty of Vegan/ Vegetarian options(which I love), the sauces and condiments were equally as delicious- Everything was good, even the Naan was better than usual The only thing I see them needing to do know, is give the outside of restaurant a fresh new vibe, to match their amazing remodel inside, and a fresh new bigger sign that is more visible If I lived in the area I would certainly come here all the time! Best Indian food I have ever had.. Thank you!
google avatar

Yelp
Very well attended buffet. Will definitely return. At least 10 -20 choices. All very good with a fine dining atmosphere.

Rebecca W.

Yelp
My partner and I were looking for somewhere to eat early Sunday evening. We went to three different places that were all advertised as being open online and they were all closed, something that is WAY too common here in Santa Fe. Hangry, we saw that India House was open. This place is always so good. The remodel is so nice, the service was excellent, and the food was delicious. It was affordable, open, clean, and everyone was so friendly. Thanks for being open and consistently great, India House!

Terri R.

Yelp
Try the garlic calamari! Best ever! Amazing service. Rack of lamb perfectly cooked. Make this a must visit. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Rachel P.

Yelp
The food is decent, and there's always a *lot* of servers. I just can't help but be bummed that it's really bleeping expensive. Especially the buffet. I eat one plate... I am not a go back for more person. And I think $23 for one plate of Indian food is just kind of tragic. It used to be the place where you knew that you could eat a nourishing meal for a fair price. now it feels like i'm the source of the nourishment.
google avatar

Art C.

Yelp
We had take out from here... now was there anything out-of-the-ordinary or extra special (ala Paper Dosa). No, not so much. Everything was pretty much par for the course. But was the food very tasty and very filling? Absolutely... If you want something beyond typical New Mexican cuisine this is a good choice...
google avatar

Scott S.

Yelp
I will start off by saying that I've never eaten the lunch buffet here. I love Indian food, but I have never had good experiences in Indian food buffets anywhere, any time. So I just stay away -- can't comment on the buffet. Ordering off the dinner menu however, I have had consistently good food that is pretty much the same each time I order it (which is definitely *not* the case at other not-to-be-named local Indian places). They are pretty good at adjusting the spice level per individual tastes. They have a good selection of dishes. The staff are a bit laconic, but they are attentive. It is our go-to Indian food in Santa Fe.
google avatar

Jacks M.

Yelp
This place is delicious. But too damn expensive, especially for dinner, hence 4 stars. I think the lunch buffet is really the way to go, so many choices and all surprisingly fresh and yummy for a buffet. A good mix of standard (for America) Indian dishes with a few seasonal or more creative dishes. The onion pakora are always delicious, and the vegetarian dishes stand out. Strange ambiance and decor, but very good buffet.
google avatar

Fidelia S.

Yelp
Cuisine was good, staff was friendly in explaining menu. Ambiance was well lit. Flavor was very strong- not a bad thing.

Stephakat T.

Yelp
Excellent food. Kashmiri naan is great. Nice staff. Favorites like saag paneer & chicken tikka masala are very good. You can get take-out, too.
google avatar

Alexis P.

Yelp
Okay so we brought 2 very picky children to this restaurant a 15 year old and a 7 year old and both were so happy. The Naan and tandoori chicken really won them over. Our 7 year old found a rolled up dollar bill in the bathroom we had to explain to her about drug culture and why we were giving her a new dollar in exchange for the one she found. Teachable moment. The service was great the saag was spicy and delicious. It's a very fancy option for a family but we will be back very happy with the food.
google avatar

Yelp
Pakora, Hada Pav, Lamb Korma and the Goat Biriyani (not on the menu, you have to ask for this) were all world-class here. And in New Mexico, too! I mean, who would have guessed? We were driving to Los Angeles, we were hungry for Indian food, but not famished, so we decided to crack on to Flagstaff to get same. Then, we found this place on the internet using the phone, saw the great reviews, and thought, "Why not?" Altogether wonderful, what a great decision. Check this place out if you get a chance.
google avatar

Yelp
I was planning on updating my review, but apparently I never wrote one yet. When I looked this up tonight (we've been here many many times now) I thought there is no way this place is 4 stars, it's 5 stars!!!! Every time we order from here, the food is great, and they are friendly. It's not cheap, but hey... it's worth it. My wife gets Chicken tikka masala, the sauce is amazing, the chicken breast has a great charbroiled flavor. I eat just the sauce, it's that good. I get vegetarian, potato and spinach.... also great, of course. Tonight I tried something new... and was slightly worried. Malai Kofta... wow it was so good, my new fav dish here! This used to be our fav dish back in Tacoma WA, Gateway to India. If you are ever in the area, check them out at Practors farmers market, lamb sausage naan wrap, with some fresh made watermelon juice.... oh the memories.
google avatar

Karen K.

Yelp
The food & service were awesome! I had the Saag Paneer, rice, garlic naan & the best chutney I've ever had. I ate there because it was close to where I was staying and so glad i did. If I lived here, that would be my go-to restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
India House is the best restaurant I've been to . Every time I visit Santa Fe India House is go to place. Best Indian food you can eat. Calamari dish is mouth watering along with all the other dishes. Customer service at its best. Taste of Chicken Tikka Masala Lamb chops . Kebobs , Currys you won't find at other Indian restaurants...India House is highly recommended
google avatar

Roger H.

Yelp
We picked up take out here while visiting Santa Fe and when the terrific New Mexico quinine needed a change after days. Across the board, this restaurant is great and I wish we had dined in. The staff was friendly, the service quite prompt and nice looking restaurant. The food was great!!! I enjoyed a Dal, terrific Chana masala, and a great shrimp dish in Dal!!! Am on a diet if you didn't recognize the healthy choices here. Like we got roti over Naan...it was also good. I loved the spice levels as well. My sons Chicken tikka was as good as it could be. Well done!
google avatar

Miles T.

Yelp
Stopped in on a Tuesday around 11:15am. Definitely prefer this place over India Palace. More options, about half vegetarian half meat, just as delicious, better naan, plain rice, and they had a better salad bar with mixed greens, cucumbers, watermelon(!), honeydew, oranges and grapes. I was expecting the price to be a bit higher, but it was under $20 before tax and tip. Paid $25.50 total. Honestly not bad considering how much I ate and how infrequently I eat out.
google avatar

Scott L.

Yelp
Ethnic Music!!! Thank you! CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA...X 2 The Lady of Honor at our table said she, "Did not want to Try Anything; She had found what she LOVED: CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA! With peas and basmati rice, and garlic nan!!!" So we ordered two for three guests, and we were FULL. The only hiccup (pardon my pun) was condiments typically served were missing. After an extraordinary delay, service returned with the necessary chutneys, but by then, we'd put a big dent in the CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA.
google avatar

Felicia B.

Yelp
Sooo... I've been coming here for awhile, but I moved away, I have been gone about 10 yrs... back into town for work & took my husband to India House for lunch buffet, which for Indian food we always go to buffets so you can sample different dishes- well, the food is good, service is excellent, but the price! Wheew! 20 something bucks for lunch apiece! Total price with tip $58!!! They didn't even have soup! Not much variety for the price. Come on India House... you can do better! We won't be back unfortunately, not for that price!

Tony R.

Yelp
The best Indian food in Santa Fe and probably in the state! And customer service is hands down the best. The delivery services were not working and they personally brought me a delicious meal! I would not compromise with spending my money on ANY other Indian restaurant.
google avatar

Rick C.

Yelp
Five stars based on how nice the owner and staff was. Ordered take out and really enjoyed the food.
google avatar

Bill S.

Yelp
On the whole, India House is no different from most mediocre Indian restaurants that you can find in most cities. There is nothing outstanding about their dishes but Santa Fe also does not have a plethora of Indian restaurants. Recently I called for a takeout and ordered an appetizer of vegetable samosas, garlic naan, Poori, Tandoori Chicken, rice with peas, saag paneer and Seekh kabab. I was a bit taken back by the total, $80.00! (no alcohol, and no desert) The samosas only had potatoes in them and weren't very flavorful. The garlic naan was also bland and had an uneven texture. The saag paneer was not creamy and somewhat dry. I wondered if it was left over from their luncheon buffet. The tandoori chicken was passable but the Seekh kabob while flavorful was also dry and fell into pieces when cut. What I didn't know would put the final nail in the coffin for India House would be the fact that the Poori we ordered was not in the bag. It was not practical to go back and retrieve the missing piece of the order as we had already unpacked and begun to eat. The following day I went to the restaurant to let them know and intended to ask for that portion of the bill refunded. ($5.95) No one in the restaurant apologized for the error and said the only person who could "help" me was the manager. I was told to call back later which I did. The manager Mr Singh was indignant and while he could've resolved the mistake very easily, instead, he took a very terse tone with me and said the Poori was put in the bag! I asked if he was implying that I was lying and he then said he would check with the person who packs the to-go bags. He came back to the phone and said there were only two orders made that night for Poori and confirmed they were put into the bag. I then said how could he know it was my bag it was put into. He very rudely said "do you want your $80 back! I was a bit taken back by a business that would treat a customer in this regard, never once saying..sorry about the mistake, I'll be happy to refund you. I will never return to an establishment that has that low a regard for their customers. The food is also forgettable.

Pete M.

Yelp
I have no hesitancy asserting that this is very good Indian food, certainly the best in Santa Fe, and the best I can recall eating anywhere. if you want "American" spice levels don't bother eating here and risk ruining it for others. Besides, there's a restaurant where you can get all the bland and character-less Indian food for an exorbitant price that you could ever want on Cerrillos.
google avatar

Michelle S.

Yelp
Delicious. Great customer service. Yummy. My review is to short to post so I will just keep saying, it is was delicious. Lots of gluten free options.

Andaleeb F.

Yelp
We ordered take out and had a great experience with a slight hiccup. The process was smooth and easy and the food was great. Delicious and well made. We are of Indian decent and visiting from California so this is not our first rodeo. The slight hiccup was the restaurant forgot to pack our dessert. We called to let them know and they immediately offered to deliver the dessert to us! This saved us a trip out into the cold to satisfy our sweet teeth so it was much appreciated. This great service immediately turned a moment of disappointment around! This is how a restaurant should respond! Bravo and our compliments to the chef!
google avatar

Beth B.

Yelp
I'm torn on how many stars to give. The lunch buffet has excellent variety, is delicious and the service is great, but including chai, it totals $30 per person plus we tipped well on top of that. That just seems way too high for a lunch buffet. I do love that they refill the chai as much as you'd like. I'd go more often if it was more fairly priced. At this price it's more of an infrequent splurge.
google avatar

Stacey C.

Yelp
I rolled into Santa Fe praying for some good Indian food. Some friends told me the love the buffet here so I thought I'd give it a try. I ordered take out: saag paneer, chicken tikki masala and naan. Omgosh! It was some of the best Indian food I've ever had - as good as Oakland. I ate it for 3 days. I'll be grabbing more before I head back to Southern New Mexico.
google avatar

Jonalyn A.

Yelp
WOW! Every dish we ordered was fantastic and Burts with flavor. Give this place a try and ask for Sam! Thank you for a wonderful experience!
google avatar

Meghan R.

Yelp
I went here with my wife for dinner after Meow Wolf and this is the BEST Indian food I've ever had. We are from Denver, CO and took a quick trip to Santa Fe and I'm so glad we ate here. We ordered Vegetable Samosas, Paneer Mahkni, cheese Naan and rice and it was INCREDIBLE! Very well seasoned. I'm sad we don't live closer as this would have become a regular spot for us. The service was great too! Thank you!

Bryan M.

Yelp
We are in Santa Fe for a few weeks and didn't really expect to find great Indian food here because of the size of the city. We are from Houston TX which is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the US with tons of Indian restaurants most of which we have tried. Put simply this place is better than any of them. We have tried the buffet twice and every single item is wonderful. All the food is high quality. Service is great and everything is really clean. Will miss it when we leave.

Yelp
I think it was near 9:30 pm when I arrived, and I was just glad to see this place open when most places were closed. I didn't know what to expect from this restaurant because the neighborhood looked a little dodgy to me at night, but I was really pleased with what I found inside. It was very clean and well-lit, and for some reason I was attracted to the hand-painted marble-pattern on the cement floor that I found rather mesmerizing. I ordered lamb saag, which is lamb in a creamed spinach, a favorite of mine. The service was fast and attentive. I asked for rice and a mango lassi, and they didn't disappoint. A mango lassi will vary in thickness and flavor from location to location, depending on ingredients used such as cardamom or rose water, and I think, in a way, that I can gauge how most of my experience at a restaurant will go based on the lassi. If the lassi is good, everything else will be good, because they pay attention to detail. And, well, after a good meal, who can resist dessert? They had a kheer rice pudding that is just delightful. I had just driven from Phoenix that morning, was exhausted, and the kheer was just what I needed. Do give this restaurant a try if you haven't.

Al M.

Yelp
3.5 Good service, decent food, relaxed ambiance. Would prefer a little more spice. Wife gave it a 9/10. We would come back next time we're in the area.
google avatar

Scott W.

Yelp
Food was pretty tasty, but $27.00 PER PERSON for a small buffet is ridiculous. $54.00 + drinks for two of us for lunch buffet.

Ross G.

Yelp
The lamb masala is great The tandori chicken not so good Also naam bread is not the best but is good

Yelp
My wife and I eat out way too much. I've been to a very large percentage of the restaurants in Santa Fe. It is my firm opinion that this is the best restaurant in Santa Fe (well, this or El Chile Torreado). I dream about the food occasionally. Yes, it can get pricey as everything is a la carte so we only come here maybe once every month or two. But when it's time to come I basically drool over it and can't stop thinking about it. I've been to most of the crazy expensive restaurants downtown too. This place is better than any of them. I've eaten Indian food all over the place, including in India. This is the best. One of their charmingly rude servers even said "everything here is the best." He is right. The chef won Indian restaurant chef of the year 3x in a row in San Francisco. That explained a whole lot once I read that. Ignore the people complaining about the price and just accept it. It's absolutely incredible food.
