"Open since 1981, India Sweet House on Pico is an LA institution and one of our favorite places in town to pick up Indian sweets and other snacks. Standouts include the jalebi (flour spirals in syrup), rasmalai (cheese curds in cream), and gulab jamun (milk solids in rosewater syrup). They also have solid main entrees as well that range from masala dosa to saag paneer. Takeout and delivery available. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

We ordered 2 different kinds of parathas and 1 Rasmalai to share. I liked the potato paratha & the Radish (muli) paratha. They are large in size so bring your appetite! A great place for an informal meal and/or a snack

They care more about their $0.001 plastic plates than their customers. I politely asked to change from for-here to to-go. She said “but I already put the food on the [plastic] plate.” I just accepted it and ate in a rush and left. It wasn’t even crowded either. 1) What difference would it have made if I had actually eaten for-here and then asked for a to-go box later? 2) Why is preserving a plastic plate—that costs fractions of a penny—worth more than customer service satisfaction and future potential sales? You save a penny, but potentially lose a customer’s future visits and their positive recommendations and word of mouth to friends and family.

I ordered masala Dosa it was not good I regret I ordered this never again

The woman at the counter is so welcoming and accommodating. The kitchen closes at 8 pm but she still prepared out food for takeout. The dahi bara and dahi puri is so yummy and their Jalebi is to die for! Definitely recommended!

Google
One of the best places to eat in LA. Most authentic and the best service! I have been going here for more than 20 years and the food is amazing!! The paratha’s are mind blowing and the sweets are the best on the west coast. Kala jamun is to die for! Would recommend to anyone who is focused on food and to anyone who loves the Indian food taste!

Google
Great place for standard Indian fare. Like everywhere else, prices have gone up. The claim to fame of this place is that it is the first Indian restaurant in Southern California. While this may well be true, I would probably question the history. In any case, this is a no frills down to earth, over the counter, Indian restaurant. I highly recommend at least one visit, if you've not been there before.

This was our first time here. We were in the area and I was craving some comfort food. I sure came to the right place! Absolutely delicious and authentic food! Made from scratch. The manager took amazingly time explaining and deciding what to eat from their specials, and offered us delightful desserts!! The place it’s simple but spotless clean! The food A+ pretty much the most authentic Indian food and sweets eatery you’ll find here in LA

Yelp
Moved to the area in June and been coming here at least once a week ever since I tried it for the first time at the end of July. And that's no over exaggeration! Don't mistake its appearance for the lack of food quality. The food is authentic vegetarian Indian and hits the spot everytime. The prices are cheap and the quality is just unmatched in the area. I brought my dad here who grew up in India and told me the food reminds him of home growing up. To me that says a lot. I often take food to go but when I get a thali or Dosa I eat it there for the freshness! The service is sweet, nice little lady whom is very kind and often gives my wife and I a treat to go! They are known for their sweets but their food is great. As for the ambiance, it still looks like it's from the 80s. That's how you know it's good! lol. Trust me. Just go try it! It's well worth it!

Yelp
I've been looking for a dosa close to home and this does the trick for me. It's absolutely stuffed with spiced potatoes and the sambar, coconut and tomato chutneys are well-seasoned. I actually ordered pani puri and was given the samosas. I was ok with this as I want to eventually try every thing on the menu. I ate them the next day so I can't speak for how good they taste fresh. For me, they seemed heavy on coriander. The service was so nice though I wish the young woman taking orders was writing them down. The ambience is seriously no-frills but I'm definitely returning for the food.

Yelp
This place has been around for such a long time! They have vegetarian Indian food and the most amazing selection of Indian sweets! The prices are incredible. I ordered a lunch which includes 3 sides, rice and two rotis for under $10! They don't take cards for purchases under $10 so bring cash. The chai is so delicious and the real deal. It's a little family owned place and nothing fancy. If you love vegetarian Indian food you have got to try them out!

Vishal C.

Yelp
Food was ok here. I'm probably not going to comeback here Pav Bhaji - bad Bryani - good Thali - ok Pannner paratha - ok Aloo paratha - ok

Yelp
The have the best masala dosa on the weekend ... it's a South Indian specialty like a curry burrito ... served with all the dipping sauces . Their okra is phenomenal also . It's not a sexy place to eat but the food is some of my favorite in la -- like being at home in India. I pickup and leave if I can wait (I usually can't.) They give out sweets too. Very charming place.

Donna H.

Yelp
I have not been able to travel for the last several years (COVID & other reasons) so when I was in LA last week I made a pilgrimage to India Sweet House. I only bought sweets, just a few, to bring back with me. Cashew burfee and besan ladoo. I did order rabri and ate it like a greedy child back at my friends house. When I return in November, I will have a dosa & more rabri. It is pure heaven! So glad I was able to visit!

Shivangi S.

Yelp
Known for their gulab jamun cakes ! I get these for my family all the time and they love them. It's basically a gulab jamun but in a cafe form that is just so delicious. It's a very unique Indian dessert so definitely try it if you're near this store. I love the staff here too, they are all so friendly and adjustable.

Yelp
The food is 5 star. I can't give that with the ambiance, which is below neutral. There isn't any. They should spend a couple grand on making the place look a little nicer. It's as drab as it gets. A paint job. Something pleasant to look at on the walls. Something that says WELCOME! But the food? Walked by there umpteen times, never went in. Never saw a crowd inside. Or anyone going in or out really. I do Indian food a lot, and I'm vegetarian. Usually Culver City adjacent. A couple years ago a friend and I went to every place to decide who had the best dosas. The answer was something was great everywhere, something else not so great. The crepe, the filling, the sambar, the chutneys. Finally went in a couple days ago, didn't want to deal with rush hour traffic and figured a half mile on Pico wouldn't be a big deal at 4 in the afternoon. Best dosa of them all. Before my first bite I knew it, just smelled different. They put something extra in that crepe, not just rice flour. Buckwheat maybe? It's more complex, and absolutely delish. Same thing with the filling. Was there with a friend who's been with me to the places on Venice Boulevard. He complimented the filling too. More ingredients, more complexity, more delish. Generous portion too, not that it's ever really a problem with the dosas. But more filling, not skimping on the masala part. The coconut chutney was similarly superior. Now it seems like the other places simply microwave the stuff you can buy in the freezer. The red spicy chutney wasn't on the same level. Wasn't bad, but needed more oomph IMO. I'm one that will never complain that something is too spicy or hot, although excess salt is a different thing. The sambar was different, more like a lentil soup and less like a vegetable one. I chatted up an older Indian gentleman, the only other person there eating. He said it's his favorite place, and asked me what I was ordering. I told him a brief history of how I discovered dosas. It's funny how the Indians at these authentic places always order them while everyone else gets the entrees they're more familiar with. One time at a similar place in Canoga Park I asked someone about that interesting bread looking thing everyone seemed to get, we'd get the lunch special with 3 entrees and all the extras. After my first dosa I never looked back. I can't wait to return to this place which is within walking distance. They raised their prices compared to the previous printed menu by 33% but it's still one of the most affordable meals around. That's another reason as a vegetarian I'm so fond of these authentic vegetarian Indian joints. The hipsters or whatnot made a lot of vegetarian places into overpriced jokes where you're not really saving anything by not eating meat. Still waiting for someone to explain to me how a veggie burger can cost more than a double cheeseburger at a lot of places, like how a pizza with 4 veggies isn't cheaper than the meat lovers special. It's bullshit, and I will never reward those places with my money. This might be the best Indian food in the city esp when you take what you get for your $$$ into account.

Yelp
What a pleasant surprise. We had to drive down to Pico Blvd. to pick up some Indian food supplies, accidentally discovered India Sweet House next door. We walked in and saw the menu above the counter. Realized this was a vegetarian restaurant with numerous South Indian specialties. Also realized this is an Indian restaurant for Indian people, not one designed around non-Indian folks like me. This is home style Indian cooking like one finds in India, not in Los Angeles. The place is a hole-in-the-wall from outside, pleasant and clean when inside. The gentleman whom took our order and the woman whom brought out our food were both hospitable. I felt good giving them our business. BHEL PURI The Bhel Puri had a wonderful array of flavors. It had the right amount of heat and a lovely crunch. It was 4.5 star Bhel Puri. The only way to make it any better would be to make it fresher. Unfortunately this entails making it to order which can be tiresome for any restaurant. This would compete for one of the best Bhel Puri in Southern California. I will absolutely order this dish again. MASALA DOSA The Dosa itself was light and crisp with a different flavor from what I'm used to. They added something to the Dosa batter which gave it a different color and flavor. Regardless it worked. The filling was textbook perfect, there was plenty of it. The coconut chutney which came with it was not my favorite. I'm used to a whiter creamier coconut dip. The Sambar was spot on perfection. All-in-all I'll give their Masala Dosa 4.5 stars. It is the 2nd best I've found in Los Angeles. Note: They only make Masala Dosa on Weekends. PAKORA 5 stars. They were perfectly crisp on the outside, light and creamy inside. The flavors were perfect. If they entered these in a Pakora fry-off their Pakora would take home 1st prize. Definitely will order them again. SWEET LASSI Cold, creamy and not too sweet. Perfection. This was a 5-star lassi. So the average comes in at 4.75 which means they get 5 stars from me. Add in the fact they were friendly, provided great service with dirt cheap prices and you get 5 stars. Look forward to dining here again.

Yelp
All-veg, inexpensive, fast, yummy food. We had their Thali (was hoping for dosa but those are only are Fri/Sat/Sun), samosas, and eggplant with a couple roti's. Would definitely go back.

Yelp
Best kept secret in la Food is always amazing Delivery quick and the gentleman who delivers couldn't be any nicer Highly recommend

Yelp
I've been coming to India Sweet House since I was an infant. In fact, I'd wager I was reared on a disproportionate amount of their rasmalai and gulab jamun. This place is really special to me. The food and staff have changed over the years, and there was a bit of a rough patch a decade or so ago, but they firmly remain in the "LA Institution" category for me. Living out in San Gabriel Valley, I don't often have much call to be out by Pico and Fairfax, but when I am, I place an order of parathas (1 Aloo, 1 Gobi), spiced cashews and rasmalai for my father and some chai to help me battle traffic on the 10 East. If I have a desi friend I'm dropping off or picking up from LAX, this is where we often stop for chana bathura, pani puri, and however much rasmalai we can consume. As a chaat house, I appreciate these folks a lot. The food is delicious and the service efficient. I suspect this used to be an old donut shop once upon a time, hence the minimal decor and often minimal cooling, but honestly, if you're desi, do you need AC when you're eating your chaat? You're drinking piping hot chai, for chrissakes.

Jack H.

Yelp
Wonderful dosas, paratha, etc. ! All the food is vegetarian, homemade, made fresh, and delicious! Prices are low with friendly service. Basic decor, and seating.

Ankita G.

Yelp
Extremely poor service, dirty tables and bad quality food. Do not order chola bhatura, it is uncooked and was rubber like from inside. We shared feedback with lady in front and she was not ready to listen to us instead argued about the food. Do not deserve 1 star even. Never coming back here.

J L.

Yelp
Food: Ordered the chole bhatura & the taste was good, but it wasn't as light and airy as the versions from other places Price: reasonable Service: Staff was neither rude nor friendly... Bathroom: didn't see one, but also didn't ask Ambiance: simple, bare bones, no frills Parking: on the street Overall: It was ok. I would try other items next time if I go back.

Yelp
The most delicious Indian food I have ever had. Their sweet treats are THE BEST!!! Delicious, extremely clean, and super friendly!!

Hakunna M.

Yelp
The food was amazing! Super affordable, great portion sizes for the price. I would recommend ordering multiple dishes and sharing. The service was also amazing, the woman who helped me gave some jalebi to eat while i waited, which was delicious and very kind. I highly recommend this gem!

Prathyusha R.

Yelp
Customer service is nasty bad. Lady at the register yelled at me because apparently I "take longer to order" and when I replied I didn't like the way she talked to me, she yelled even more that the guy inside the kitchen walked out to calm her down. I will never step into this restaurant again.

Carolyn K.

Yelp
Pretty solid Indian food. This place is very casual and has great prices. The owner is very sweet and service is great. Next door is an Indian grocery store that is also great with a selection of delicious Indian foods, spices, fruits, etc. I tried almost every dish here at the restaurant and everything was pretty tasty. It wasn't the best but I definitely had worse. I would go back. This was not cash only like one of the reviews posted here, they took credit card. This place is also vegetarian which is nice for me. But they use real dairy. Which is also good for me! They had a huge variety of desserts and baked goods.

Samy A.

Yelp
Love this spot. Always a reliable take out option especially on weekends (and fridays) when they serve the Masala Dosa! Sometimes they'll even throw in some indian sweets for free. Highly recommend as a go-to!

Anne L.

Yelp
Clean, friendly place with delicious Indian food. Shamoly takes your order with a smile and often throws in a small sweet, gratis! This is my "go-to" place for samosas, Masala Dosa, Sangeet and a good cuppa Chai!

Anand V.

Yelp
This is one of the best Indian places for sweets and food. My top favorite is the Puri bhaji which is delicious. I love the mix parathas and they have a great paneer paratha. Samosas are ok. Gulab Jamun and rasmalai are out of the world!

Bhargav S.

Yelp
This is one of the best indian food I've had in LA. Their Parathas are absolutely delicious

Sergio W.

Yelp
Food here is amazing and the price is incredible !!! The people that work here are kind too! Don't forget to tip :) Veggie Thali is my go to but everything is yummy.

Chai S.

Yelp
Pretty good food with great service and great price. I loved the chat that I ordered, and the naan was perfect in thickness. I got an okra dish which was pretty good but a little oily. My friend got the choke bature and wasn't a huge fan of how the chickpeas were prepared. It feels like a cafeteria more than a restaurant, but the owner was super nice and catered to all of our requests. They also have sweets and savory snacks if you like!

Gurbir T.

Yelp
Surprised to see negative reviews here. Please set your expectations correct before coming here. This place serves home style Indian food. So stop comparing with restaurant style cooking. I ordered Daal and eggplant. Food came quick and hot! Flavors like you would find back home in your own home. Was perfect for the cold evening. More power to these guys.

Senay K.

Yelp
Pros: 1. the old man is sweet. 2. The hot food is fresh. 3. All vegetarian which is good for vegetarian people! Cons: 1. Didn't like the paratha with veggies and cheese, wasn't very flavorful. It was hot though. 2. Bought about $12 worth of the dessert (around $8.99 a pound). I got home and tasted the desserts (barfi) and it tasted like refrigerator stale. One of the flavors I chose was also rock hard so I knew it was old. I also didn't notice the younger guy put in 2 pieces of dessert that I didn't even want, which I had to pay for. 3. I came in on a Monday. The jalebi (fried orange dough covered in syrup) was made on Thursday. He gave me a sample, it was soggy and not crispy like it was supposed to be. 3-4 day old dessert? No thank you. I gave it 2 stars because the old man gave me a free hot chapati, probably because my total was over $15 for one person. Unfortunately, I have to throw the dessert away. Didn't like it because it was dry but 2 stars for services!

Xander E.

Yelp
Delicious authentic Indian food! The business owners are very sweet. Highly recommend it for a yummy taste of truly traditional Indian cuisine.

G A.

Yelp
Literally the best paratha in the US, maybe the world. Consistent quality for at least 20 years. Left LA 20 years ago, visited recently and made sure to find this place. It still looks the same!! Unbelievable! And the paratha was exactly as we remembered it!!

Dan A.

Yelp
India Sweet House is a fun stop & great option for a wide assortment of Indian desserts, snacks and vegetarian entrees on Pico Blvd.. They offer good quality across the board. I especially enjoy their Masala Dosa (served Friday through Sunday), samosas and Puri Chana (Fried bread with chick pea). If you can handle the butter and sugar overload, their dessert options are all dangerously good.

Ch A.

Yelp
This place is totally crap, the customer service is horrible, sweets seems like weeks old.

Siddhesh R.

Yelp
Best parathas in town! Reminds me of parathewali hali. Madhu auntie is so sweet to talk to.highly reccomend it!

Dan S.

Yelp
Their snacks are OK but it was summertime and it was hot in there. I don't think we will be back.

Anisha B.

Yelp
I come here for the parathas and papdi chaat. When ordering paratha (I usually go for cauliflower or paneer), I always request them to add extra onion and chilli and then it's delicious!!! Without the addition, it feels a little bland. Papdi chaat is yum- I again need to add a little more green and red chutneys to it and it's thoroughly enjoyable then. They don't cook all their food everyday, so I recommend asking what's been freshly prepared that day.

Ingrid L.

Yelp
Stopped by for a quick snack after a day of thrifting. The tables are sticky and there is no air conditioning but it is yummy. The workers are a little cold at first but answered all my questions about what was on the menu without giving me any trouble. I ordered the pani puri which were little fried piece of bread in yogurt with chickpeas and onions. I loaded up on the self serve onions and mint/tamarind chutneys. The puris were pretty hard and you could tell that they had been sitting for a while but they were good after being soaked in the yogurt for a couple minutes. The flavors worked together really well and it was the perfect cool snack on a hot day. I'm excited to come back and try everything else on the menu.

Andrew S.

Yelp
Great place. If you live nearby definitely come on by. I got the masala dosa and the paratha paneer and they were both delicious. Staff is very helpful with great service. Will come again!

Gabe C.

Yelp
EVERYTHING WAS GREAT! Got the dinner special with Curry Chicken, Mixed Vegs, eggplant, rice and naan. 9.99 And it's awesome to know that I could've even gotten a slice of pizza if I wanted to lol

Deborah J.

Yelp
This is my favorite place to get Indian food! So authentic, flavorful, and delicious. They have amazing my family and I have been coming for years and always order a variety! My favorites include masala dosa, samosas, mango lassee, thali, and the yogurt is the best! Don't forget to try a masala chai and some sweets!

Aesha D.

Yelp
Small place but fresh food and excellent service. Traditional punjabi food, loved the paratha and aloo gobhi. Affordable, tasty and satisfying.

Princess Heidy A.

Yelp
Clean Indian food made to order ! God knows what's good !!! I ate the two side thali it was amazing they make the paneer from scratch no package food or processed canned items it's all made to fresh to order . they also use a traditional clay oven for the garlic naan bread so u know is bomb so like pay a visit if u want KRSNA Vedic Prasadam

Susamoy A.

Yelp
Mission accomplished! Finally found the BEST vegetarian Indian restaurant in LA. I like to leave good reviews (of course honest), but this place deserves more than that. Each and every items we ate there had unique & authentic flavor. How do I know, cuz I always eat Indian foods & probably tried most of the Indian restaurants in LA. Masala Dosa - The stuffings inside was delish & I could tell they used fresh ingredients. The sides complimented the dosa as well. Can be shared by two persons. Dahi puri - Spicy & combination of so many spices. Flavor bursted in my mouth. But I wouldn't eat it first, cuz rest of the items will taste bland after this. Chole Bhature - Fried puffed bread was amazing! Comes with Chole (Garbanzo curry), but we also tried the Bhature with Shahi Paneer (Cottage cheese in special curry) & it was bomb! Mixed paratha - Probably the only thing that kinda lacked flavor. But I'm quite sure it was because I've tried more flavorful foods earlier Rasmalai - Heaven! Sweets - My 'o My! I had to take the assorted box to try different sweets. You can pick whatever u like & $8/lbs felt like a steal to me. This is my ultimate to go Indian place. This is the BEST Indian restaurant I've ever been into. And I approve this message. :) Enjoy!

Fatima K.

Yelp
The rabri is amazing. It's something unique and not readily available in LA. Get the paratha and rabri with a cup of chai. The sweets and snacks are fresh. Definitely worth the drive.

Bo L.

Yelp
I was surprised with the distinctness of each dessert. Some were sweeter, flakier, and more textured than others even though they look the same. I've been to other Indian bakeries before and they were all pretty bad. So far this is the only one I like. Prices are reasonable as well. My favorite is the milk cake (it's not a spongy cake).

Alyne T.

Yelp
I'm giving this four stars because it's sketchy looking outside, and the inside is very bare-bones. But it's five stars overall for this type of place! Just think twice before bringing your hot date here. Also I have to say that I loved the family like atmosphere here - a lot of people seemed to know each other and most were actually Indian which was kind of fun for me as a non-Indian! After seeing this photo you might imagine this meal was meant for a large family or a small army - but no! This was just your average dinner for my mom and I. Pictured: daal (lentils), Aloo Gobi (cauliflower and potato dish), saag paneer (spinach and cheese dish - looks awful but tastes pretty good.) vegetable stuffed bread, delicious chutney sauce, and the sad remains what was once our mango lassi, samosas, and pakora. My favorites for the bread, the Pakora, and the spinach. So good! Least favorites were the daal and aloo Gobi, but that's not really fair of me because I never really love those dishes :-) they're a bit too bland for me! But the vegetable stuffed bread was freaking good and I could eat 1 million of them. I used the bread as a tortilla and put all the different things inside and my mom kept calling it an Indian burrito. But whatever it was, it was delicious. I would also like to mention the adorable store owner man, who is very clever and funny and nice. For all of that it was $26.

Ato P.

Yelp
I love this place so much I eat here twice a week. Service is outstanding and the chef is amazing. I can't recommend this place enough!

Linda B.

Yelp
This place is not too far from my apartment, so it's a go-to for me! The fact that is super affordable and delish seals the deal! What really does it for me are the desserts. I looooove Indian desserts. And naan. And paratha. You know, all the carbs! Beware that sometimes, the person behind the counter might know next to English. Which is totally okay since they are always friendly. And sometimes, there's no one around to help. Be patient and wait a few minutes. They are probably busy in the kitchen. It's a hole in the wall, but the food speaks for itself!

Isha M.

Yelp
Horrible food and service, apart from the displeasing presentation of whatever we ordered. The old man who took our order was acting all weird and seemed pretty disinterested in serving us being his only customers at the time. The food didn't at all taste good. Upon telling the old man, he immediately said that I didn't make it, and pointed towards this guy saying he made it so he is to be blamed. Seriously? Who wants to know who filled up the dish with crap? My husband and I had food poisoning after coming back home. Never coming back again to India sweet house. A big no no for people who love Desi Indian food!!!

Dinah L.

Yelp
This the best most authentic Indian food in LA! All vegetarian dishes and sweet treats to take home. The spicy cashews are amazing!
