Best New Restaurants in Philly Right Now | Eater Philly

"Philadelphia is blessed with a fairly robust selection of Indonesian restaurants, but Indo Spice represents the first spot focused exclusively on food from the island of Sulawesi. Chef Benny Pangalila serves dishes from his home, including fried corn fritters, whole fried fish, salted fish fried rice, and more." - Maddy Sweitzer-Lamme

We did looked their menu before we were heading to Indo Spice because when I searched this place came out and had no clue there was Indonesian restaurant nearby. When we walked in there was only 2 people eating and was 4:30pm. We were party of four. We got pork satay, red fried rice, salted fish fried rice, tempong rice platter and street food meatball soup. The meatball soup portions was a bit small, but the meatballs was 4 pcs and they were decent size, I was just hoping they give me bigger bowl like the pho soup portions lol. The bowl was really small like for kids size. But the meatballs taste I did enjoy it. Everyone enjoy their food, the red fried rice surprisingly was pretty good even though the name and the looks was little weird especially when we asked the waitress she said the red color is from Indonesia ketchup and our mind was like what?? Fried rice using ketchup?! But honestly we had to try it and yes was pretty good until I had to ordered to go too. I also ordered to go the Hokkian noodle, Indo spice chicken noodle, tahu gejrot (need more flavor was a bit bland). We were there on Sunday so luckily the street parking was free.. otherwise we have to pay for parking. The FOH workers all was friendly. Place was not that big but it was nice decorated. Overall was good experience. Will try something else when we’re back.

I ordered the Corn Fritters, Meatballs 911, and Ambengan Chicken Soto. The food there is good. If you try the meatballs, you can ask for the sauce on the side since it’s very spicy but full of flavor. I would come again to try different dishes. I also got a complimentary dessert called Es Pallu Butung. It has shredded ice, a bit of syrup, condensed milk, coconut cream, and banana or plantain. It tastes sweet and pretty good.

I LOVED all of their food! Food is savory and not overwhelming for those who are not familiar with Indonesian spices (like myself). Food comes out fast. Highly recommend their pork satay and Chicken Soto Ambengan (yellow chicken soup with rice noodles). Affordable prices too.

We decided to try Indo Sprice based on all the glowing Google reviews, but honestly the experience was disappointing. We ordered fried tofu in a “special sauce,” a noodle soup with rice, and a fried fish with yellow sauce. The tofu was bland and forgettable—we barely touched it. The noodle soup was not at all what we expected; Indonesian food usually stands out with bold, rich flavors, but this dish had none. The only dish worth mentioning was the fried fish, and mainly because of the yellow sauce, which was decent but nothing extraordinary compared to other Indonesian places I’ve tried. On top of that, the service was poor. Whenever we needed something, we had to wave for a long time and still couldn’t get attention. Both male servers were on their phones the whole time instead of checking on customers. The only good service came from the lady working there—she was attentive and polite. Overall, the food felt very average and not worth the hype. Only later did we notice that the restaurant encourages customers to leave a Google review in exchange for a free dessert, which really makes you question how genuine all those positive reviews are.

Google
Amazing dining experience! Went to Indo Spice for lunch and they absolutely lived up to their stellar reputation. Entire restaurant and bathroom spotless clean. Service is welcoming, patient and super friendly. We ordered the dumpling soup and spring rolls as an appetizer and then the mi goreng, ox tail soup and baked chicken for main course. All dishes fresh and tasty. You must try Indo Spice as soon as you can. They are that amazing!

We came here to pick up some food for the first time while visiting the area for a festival. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the food is. Overall Ratings Restaurant 5/5 Service 5/5 Food 5/5 Parking Street parking Atmosphere: The restaurant is small but nicely decorated and very clean. Service: The service was excellent. Even though we were only there for takeout, the cashier or owner we interacted with was very friendly. What We Ordered: -Egg Scallion Pancake (Very good.) -Taliwang Chicken Rice Platter (Very good, a bit on the spicy side but the heat does not linger.) -Smashed Chicken Rice (By far my favorite dish, the chicken was tender and flavorful.) Final Thoughts: I would definitely go again. The food we tried was delicious, the staff were friendly, and it is easy to see why the restaurant is so popular with locals.

I have eaten here twice, both times. Very satisfied with my meals. I've had the oxtail soup which comes with rice sambal and crispy banana chips. The soup is mild and rich with meat on the bone for chewing on. The rice and sambal can be added to the soup to customize the spiciness and hardiness of each bite. I've also had the seafood with crispy noodles which includes homemade chicken and shrimp meatballs in a mild sauce with fiery sambal and lime slices on the side to spice it up. Four appetizers I've had the corn fritters which are crispy deliciousness and the spring rolls which are stuffed with an assortment of vegetables including pickled cabbage, both suitable for vegetarians. For sweets I've had the happy soda. Much like an Asian egg cream, it featured Seltzer, a sweet syrup and sweetened condensed milk. I had a shave iced dessert with coconut cream and a fruit syrup that took me straight to Oahu.

I ordered the “Nasi Empal” and “Dadar Jagung,” and they were absolutely delicious! What truly sets this place apart is its elegant ambiance and sophisticated setting. I believe it’s the most stylish Indonesian restaurant in Philadelphia, offering a wide range of delectable food options. While the prices are on the lower side, the portions are relatively small, which is perfectly acceptable. I’ll definitely be returning to this place again!

Yelp
Another Indonesia spot in South Philly you need to try! They're serving up unique Indonesian dishes you won't find at other Indonesian restaurants, and the prices are just right for their portions. Some of my favorites: - Mini Beef Meatballs - U.P Noodle (the red pork is so good) - Taliwang Chicken Rice Platter - Tempong Rice Platter . The restaurant is beautifully designed with aesthetic touches that highlight Indonesian culture . The place is a bit small, so it may not be ideal for large groups. It does get pretty busy on weekends, but the line moves quickly! Just be patient and kind to the staff. Don't let your hunger turn into anger and ruin the experience.

Yelp
Restaurant was full when I came on Saturday at 1:30. A lot of menu items were sold out. Very disappointing. Mie up: noodle soup with pork: good broth but too much noodles compared to the amount of protein in one portion. It's ok. It has two small fried wontons and sweet chasiu pork Ketoprak: rice cake with rice noodles, tofu, smothered with peanut sauce. Highly recommend. Beautiful interior although outside it looks like a mediocre restaurant. The inside looks upscale with Indonesian themed paintings.
