14 Phenomenal Restaurants for Vegan Diners in San Francisco

"On the corner of 16th and Valencia streets lies one of the city’s most unsung fully vegan restaurants. The menu includes teriyaki chicken, fish and chips, chow mein, and all of it made with old-school soy-versions of meat. Cha-Ya up the street is a home run, too, but the affordable prices and inventive, plentiful dishes keep fans coming back to Indochine year after year." - Paolo Bicchieri, Eater Staff

Google
The food was awesome except that we didn't like the sizzling teriyaki 'chikn'. But except for that, everything we ordered was amazing especially the Korean Clay pot (Ba-Ba Boom - I think). The service was great and very personable. We had trpuble finding the spot as the name on the board is different. The waitress came out to guide us in and was very attentive through out! Will definitely visit again!!!

Google
The food was good. I’d the Mongolian Delight. It tasted pretty delicious! I also liked the yogurt soju. I’d have given this place 3 stars, but I did like the food; so, 4 stars. The service was a bit… reluctant. Not sure what was going on there! 😅

Google
**is it really Vegan? eggs and meat maybe prepared, we saw eggs being shipped into the store even after the workers saying this place is vegan. The reviews seemed good but after arriving at the restaurant I was dismayed. The waiters are barely able to understand English numbers and serves the wrong order. The shrimp food we got was utterly terrible as the shrimp tasted so old and not to mention the breading which was pathetic. The breading was so HARD but yet so oily, and was WORST than frozen food!!! The noodle soup had ZERO flavor and was basically hot water, the noodle itself was UNCOOKED. The entire environment seemed yucky and the place the food was prepared was unhygienic. Not to mention the utensils and plates that reeked with smell. To sum up the food was A*S so save your money and health by NOT going here. Never in my life have I been to a vegan place so old and rotten restaurant that reeked with smell. Like the other review said that THIS is NOT a Vegan place as we saw eggs be shipped into the store. We were tricked by the good reviews which were most definitely by BOTS. Would give it NEGATIVE stars. Hopefully me and my family don’t fall SICK!

Google
We went to Indochine for lunch and were really impressed. We got the Spring Rolls, Chow Mein, Sizzling Teriyaki Soy Beef, and the Shiitake Mushroom Sushi Rolls. The service was really fast and the food was all great - amazing portion sizes for the price. The only thing that we didn’t like was the sushi - would not recommend getting sushi from here but everything else was amazing. Will be back to try the other menu items!

The pulse of San Francisco thrummed outside Indochine Vegan. Its bohemian facade, mirroring the raw energy of the Mission District, beckoned me inside. Spicy noodles, my choice of culinary adventure, arrived with the city's characteristic haste. Each spoonful ignited a flavor explosion, a savory melody of spices and fresh herbs dancing on my tongue. The food, steaming and vibrant, spoke volumes of the kitchen's dedication. Yet, a discordant note lingered. The service, efficient but impersonal. Indochine Vegan, a testament to San Francisco's boundless spirit and vegan restaurant options, offered a taste of the unexpected. It stood as a sanctuary, a refuge from the urban chaos, where even the most unexpected corners hummed with the city's vibrant energy.

Google
A small little vegetarian/vegan place on Valencia (SF). We ordered fried wonton (appetizer), Mongolian delight and teriyaki tofu for the main. There was only one server and she was running around serving all the people giving her 100%, kudos to her. We got the main course first, before the appetizer and that’s my only gripe. The food was very good but the portions are too large for us to finish so we ended up wasting a bit.

Google
Gotta say, the food is pretty good. Hot, tasty vegan alternatives…. but we probably had one of the weirdest dine in experiences tonight. I’m sorry, but that server was really out of her depth. It was almost like a running joke how bad and slow the service was. From the moment we walked into the restaurant, to leaving, there were too many times to count where we had to either wave her down, get out of our seats or just do sometime ourselves. Of the 7 tables in there, not one got cleared while we ate, so we were surrounded by filthy tables the whole time. Like I said, food was pretty good, but service became a pretty funny experience with how bad it was. I don’t know, maybe that’s their vibe. We’re pretty easy going, but this took the cake.

We ordered the spicy Tuna sushi and Vietnamese clay pot rice! So flavorful. The portion sizes and pricing are excellent. Definitely recommend this place :)

Yelp
Yum Yum. My family includes vegetarians, Omnivores, and Picky Children, and we love Indochine--it's a gem. When I pick up our order, I am seduced by the baskets of fresh vegetables being prepared; velvety mushrooms, the alluring crispness of snap peas. The color of the asparagus is what the medieval nun Hildegard von Bingen would describe as "viriditas" -- the fresh greenness and vitality of life. My point being that Indochine uses very fresh vegetables and you can taste this quality in the ingredients. Our standby dishes include Spicy Noodle soup, Vegetarian Phó, Pot Stickers, Chao Mein noodle, Sweet Potato Samosas, and Mango Smoothie (my kids love the smoothie; to my taste it's a bit chunky). Once, they forgot one part of my order, and more than made up for it next time: "Very kind service" says my husband.

Yelp
We were the only in restaurant customers and we got our first dish an hour into waiting. When we finished eating it the second still hadn't arrived and it was not till we asked for the bill that we got the food we ordered. The service was slow and unprofessional. The food was not that great but it was exacerbated by the lack of service and ridiculousness of the situation. We complained at the end but were offered free kombucha, that we didn't want. Honestly have no idea how they're able to stay in business.

Yelp
I was thoroughly blown away that everything here was vegan - especially with such a wide variety of menu items. My favorite was probably the "tuna" sushi and the tofu rice bowls. The food came out super quickly and the staff were kind as well - though it did take us some time to get our order in and out. The vegan shrimp was a bit tough that's my only critique

Yelp
Ordered delivery from here and were missing some of the items we had ordered and paid for. When my mom called to explain the situation the woman who picked up hung up on my mother and then stopped answering the phone. When I tried calling from my phone the woman who answered simply said "sorry" and hung up. I'm giving one star for the tofu and string beans, but I can't recommend this place to anyone given the horrific customer service.

Yelp
This was a great place to get vegan food out on Valencia, and the prices are very reasonable for SF. Dishes were sub $15 and they give generous portions. Someone next to us ordered a clay pot rice dish and it looked massive so definitely will try that next time. I wouldn't particularly recommend the vegan cheesecake, but everything else was good. I'll def be coming back for the sub $4 Thai tea. The service was really nice, but it was pretty empty inside. I hope more people come here the people working here are super nice and deserve more business :)

Anastasiya K.

Yelp
They have a great variety of ONLY vegan options at reasonable prices. The chef's fried rice is a must-try--full of flavor and perfectly cooked. The cozy atmosphere and attentive, friendly service make it a delightful spot to enjoy a vegan meal.

Yelp
Ambiance: 3/5 very casual, nothing too special. Food: I got the bun hue. It was okay I would say 2/5 . Compared to the meat counter part, I was disappointed that it wasn't as spicy and that the noodles used weren't the right ones. They used pho noodles instead. It made the experience feel inauthentic. The broth was still tasty but bun Bo hue is usually spicy so I expected bun hue to also be spicy since it's based off of that. 3/5: the shiitake high mountain roll was decently good. I liked it better than the bun hue. Service: 4/5 the service is really nice . They were a little stingy about giving more napkins.

Yelp
Lunched at Indochine and it was delish. I ordered the crispy noodles and my colleague a club sandwich. The crispy noodles was HUMONGOUS that I almost fell off my chair. The club sandwich arrived many minutes later and was also humongous but my colleague had no problem finishing it off. The noodles were good, especially the vegetables, but it was a bit salty to my liking. I would highly recommend this place thought, because they have lots of options and I would like to go back and try other dishes.

Yelp
Very very slow service and horrible food! The kind that is over salted with little other taste. Pass this place by!

Yelp
I was so disappointed by my entire experience here. We arrived at 9pm for dinner(website says open until 10pm). We were told we needed to order within 5 minutes, which we agreed to. We ordered an appetizer, two mains and a slice of cheesecake. Our mains arrived, and we were almost done with them when our waitress dropped our desert off. We asked what had happened with our appetizer, and eventually it arrived, no apologies or anything. Slightly perturbed, but ate the appetizer. I asked for the bill, and the prices were higher than what the menu said. When I pointed this out, the waitress said they were printing new menus and then brought me a takeout menu with the higher prices. I told them it was illegal to charge me more than what the menu showed. We then got into an argument over this and the waitress would not concede. I told her that the service was awful, when I mentioned the appetizer, she said it was the chefs fault,(still no apology) and that they did us a favor by letting us order. The chef then came out and also started shouting at me in an Asian language. What an insult. They weren't even busy, only 4 other people in the restaurant. The food was OK, not great. I will never go back.

Yelp
Indochine opened in 2014 and is conveniently situated close to the 16th St. Mission BART station. Though mainly Chinese food, it is a Pan-Asian restaurant. They serve dishes from Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, and Japan. They only use plant-based ingredients and are a 100% vegan restaurant. Besides using premium quality ingredients, they also serve with only eco-friendly disposables. Inside is very casual and has ample seating for various group sizes. It feels like a quiet, local mom and pop Asian restaurant. It is clean and organized inside even on busiest days. Service is always wonderful and staff are friendly. They do a great job bringing out the food fast and it is perfectly plated each time I came to eat. I heard great things about Indochine from friends and so I came to try out many of their items on the menu. Don't mistaken this for Golden Era, which is mainly Vietnamese food. My favorite items are their chow mein and fried wonton. They use a lot of seitan-style meat swaps and do it in a great, tasty way. Their lemongrass chicken, broccoli beef, and sweet and sour protein are worth a try. Also, I really enjoyed their vegan cheesecake and Vietnamese coffee for dessert.

Yelp
Good food. Nice ambience. Good menu options, particularly for vegetarians. I wish I could give this place only 3.5 stars, because while there was nothing wrong with the food or experience, the flavors of our dishes were just not that elevated. Nothing was bad (and not pictured here, but they make Oshinko Maki). The waitress was very busy, but was attentive. The prices were very affordable, which what made me opt for the higher start rating, but, fairly standard meatless Asian-Fusion fare.

Yelp
This is SO healthy, they have lots of steamed veggies *and* miso soup too. Omg, it's like the ideal restaurant, almost.

Yelp
It was a nice spot for Vegan food, the server was friendly. The food was tasty, and is in line with SF prices. Location is easy for BART or Muni. It was relatively quiet, not a long wait. Solid Vegan option.

Yelp
This place is so deng good. Eat here if you want to have a great time. Danny Tanner sent me here and I appreciate it so much.

Yelp
I've been here several times! The location is perfect and the inside is really welcoming. Service has been consistently quick and very very kind. I've even been offered free samples of some dishes when they are slow. The menu is eclectic, which worried me at first. But I have found every dish I've ordered here, and in the several years I've been going that's a lot, consistently tasty and well-presented. My favorite dishes are the soups! A great spot for an affordable vegan meal!
google avatar

Yelp
Everything on the menu is excellent (and yes, I have tried all the dishes). The decor is basic and clean. The service is super nice from the ladies who have been there a while and work extra hard. Highly recommend!! If you don't want to battle Valencia's bike and car lanes, just order for delivery :)
google avatar

Yelp
The food here is so good but it's in a sketch area. The staff is super sweet but the owner is a bit intense. I went with friends and we all had the fresh lime juice and it was so refreshing. We also got the sweet & sour soy protein, sizzling teriyaki soy beef, and the orange sesame bites with rice. I love vegetables so it was kick ass. I'm not vegan but the food here is consistently good so I really like it.
google avatar

Josie L.

Yelp
I used to come here once or twice a week. Today I was really disappointed. I got the dish that I always order Crispy Chow Fun and the flavor was completely different; some kind of barbecue flavor. It was also missing the shrimp that usually comes with the dish. The waitress said they don't put it in anymore unless you ask because it's expensive. What?! Also, I noticed the condiment tray and containers were filthy as were the light switches in the bathroom. This place needs a deep cleaning. Probably won't be going back anytime soon, which is sad because I want to support fully vegan restaurants, especially when so many are closing lately.
google avatar

Lisa T.

Yelp
I'm transitioning to a dairy free, gluten free, red meat free diet. My diet is pretty limiting, but I'm glad there are restaurants like Indochine Vegan that provide tasty substitutes. I found the eggplant dish and the orange sesame bites (not gluten free) to be delicious. It's definitely worth a try if you aren't even vegan. Btw, you aren't notified if your take out is ready. I'd give them 20-30 minutes to get the food.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
The most inept service I've ever experienced. From the time we sat down it took an hour to get our food.
google avatar

Yelp
Located in a busy area, but the place can easily be missed because the sign doesn't stand out quickly. Once inside, there is plenty of seating for 2, 4, or larger groups. They seemed to also have a few small tables outside. It was a bit confusing as to how to order or if I should seat myself. With just one employee at a register taking orders, payments, and brining out food at all those seated, it was hard to get attention. I waited in line just to ask if I should seat myself or how to order? I was finally seated by the person and it took awhile to get my order and finally wait to make payment. I took half to go just to speed up the process. The food was decent, but nothing out of this world. Also, the menu listed the item as $11.95, but the receipt I got the price was maybe 50 cents higher. I asked about the difference and was told the price went up. So be careful when ordering. The prices may not be accurate. Pay attention to your receipts. This may be a small increase but who knows how much the price of whatever you order has gone up. Felt sneaky to me!

Yelp
As someone who is *not* exclusively vegan, but eats vegan occasionally... Indochine is home to what may be the best vegan Bun Hue Spicy noodle. I've had it countless times - even having it delivered to me a handful of times because it's THAT good. (Going through the extra step of having to mix the separated noodles and soup containers myself at home is not something I'll do for just any take-out soup noodle.) The first time I tried it, I was skeptical due to the noodles being more similar to pho noodles in shape and texture as opposed to the typical round rice noodle, but somehow, it works. And I wish I could give this place 5 stars but frankly, the only memorable dish for me at this place is just the Bun Hue Spicy noodle. The rest of the dishes I ordered felt just slightly above average at best. Don't get me wrong, this place is great, but I'd only go to Indochine if I was getting Bun Hue in addition to anything else. (My dream team is Bun Hue Spicy Noodle with Potstickers and a nice cup of Iced Thai Tea.)
google avatar

Catherine T.

Yelp
O M G I think I found my new favorite vegan restaurant in the Bay! I ordered the teriyaki tofu stir fry and the chow fun with a side of brown rice and legit had the best experience devouring those dishes. Sooo delicious, not heavily salted, not overly greasy...just a culinary masterpiece. I will be back soon to try more of their dishes!
google avatar

Jay C.

Yelp
I love introducing my friends to vegan restaurants. And even though it was a friend's farewell lunch, I'm still glad I was able to take him somewhere new. Started with the mango salad, ordered the three mushrooms and green beens and sizzling teriyaki soy beef entrees, and lastly the crispy chow fun. The salad was a highlight--mangoes are in season and so refreshing on a warm day. What I would leave out for next time is the sizzling teriyaki soy beef since it has the same sauce as the crispy chow fun (and the chow fun is way too much fun to eat). Good way to make room for other dishes because Indochine has an eclectic menu that also offers a variety of things for those willing to explore, from sushi to a tuna sandwich (under a separate Western section). I've been here plenty and I've always leaned more heavily towards the Vietnamese-inspired dishes which has kept me coming back for more.

Yelp
Really yummy! I got the fragrant clay pot bowl. A lovely afternoon lunch. Service was just how I like, to figure out what to eat and then be left to eat. Overall, recommend

Yelp
Absolutely a must anytime I'm in town. They're conveniently located across the street from Cyclops Tattoo, so after every session, I know what I'm getting for dinner: Hot and sour soup. It's a simple, brothy combination of veggies and some tofu, but it has some real spice and always comes out piping hot. Spring, summer, fall, or winter, it's everything I crave. Super fast service, incredibly kind people, and a completely vegan menu? Yes, I support all of this, and you should too. Today, I was even given a free Thai tea, which happens to be another favorite of mine which I rarely indulge in. SUCH a treat, plus the perfect cooling foil to the steamy soup. While there's so much more on the menu that does tempt me, I can't seem to deviate from the usual. It's just that good.
google avatar

Jude D.

Yelp
Ok, i stopped here cause shizen was busy and I really wanted hot sake and something with no shellfish (allergy) but Fr, that spicy tuna vegan roll was bomb af and I would def go back to try other shit on their menu. Also that hot sake obvi was good!
google avatar

Brie B.

Yelp
I wanted to love the food but it was too oily. Ambiance was very low; I am not fussy about food safety but I actually noticed the dirtiness of the place. They are nice people and I wish them the best, but would not recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
Of eating vegan was like this all the time, it may not be hard!!! I love the food here.
google avatar

Yelp
Ignored all my notes. Found a bug in my food. It's more than enough to stay away from such place. I wouldn't recommend this place.

Yelp
Their dishes were tasty and fresh. My favorite was the clay pot rice which is so crispy at the bottom! Very nice service.
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely delicious & abundant beautiful vegan food. Will definitely go back. Great experience. Not overpriced.

Yelp
My friend and I placed an order for pickup at 920pm on a Sunday, well within the restaurants operating hours until 10pm. Despite receiving a confirmation text that my order was received, once I arrived at 9:40pm, I was told that my order had been canceled. I was told the cook had left 5 mins before my order came through. While she mentioned I should have received a cancelation text I didn't receive anything. I even made several calls before I placed the order to see if they could sit us to dine in but the call kept going to a mailbox that was full. Since no one answered we decided to do a pickup order. If the cook is leaving early customers shouldn't be able to place an order! I did end up receiving a cancelation text the following day but have yet to get my refund. It was a disappointing end to what was intended to be a flavorful evening
google avatar

Thunder K.

Yelp
I love this place! Enjoy the Lemongrass Chicken! My favorite place to eat! Also love the tuna!!! Sooo vegan and sooo good!

Yelp
I live in SF and have tried many vegan restaurants and this is by far the worst. Don't waste your time and money. My partner and I recently went here for dinner and ended up ordering several things, ate a few bites and decided to get the bill and leave. Restaurant offered no apology or refund. After our food arrived, two items were not what we ordered and the item we did order was bland and sour (as if it was going bad). We had to walk over to the staff, as no one checked on us after the food arrived, to let them know our order was messed up and our food tasted bad. Instead of offering to make us a new order they just brought us over something else as a "replacement" which was somewhere more disgusting than what we had already tasted. We then decided to leave after only eating a few bites of each thing and weren't offered any kind of refund or apology. I am shocked this place has such a high rating on Yelp/Google given the terrible food quality, service and overall bad atmosphere inside. I have also ordered food here from Uber eats and each time the orders were missing items, my order never came or my order had incorrect items. Do not recommend whatsoever.
google avatar

Neil S.

Yelp
Take out, a little outdoor seating, and some very tasty food! The staff take the COVID measures seriously and that's appreciated. The only critique I have isn't their fault - the sidewalk isn't well suited for outdoor seating and eating. It's not bad though for it. The pho was a little bland but otherwise satisfying. Their appetizers are tasty, too. Would recommend for pick up, and on a nice day maybe sitting outside!

Rajvi S.

Yelp
Good food. Little bland, but you can put their spicy sauce to add missing flavor. Would recommend, not a bad option.
google avatar

Melanie S.

Yelp
**Review as a meat eater** I got the Mongolian Delight and Green Beans! Mongolian Delight had a variety of soy meats that were interesting but still good. It tasted like the normal impossible meat that doesn't taste like meat but does the job. The dish wasn't spicy and it was marked as spicy so was a little disappointed by that. The green beans were yummy but weren't as spicy as I had hope too. There's sambal sauce on the table so you can always add that. Overall, everything had flavor but was still average tasting to me. Although I would not come alone, I'd definitely come back with my vegetarian and vegan friends!!
google avatar

Tyler T.

Yelp
My friend recommended this place to eat at and while I love her and most of her food recommendations, this place just wasn't all that good for me, and in some ways I found it kind of disgusting. It's a mix of a bunch of Asian cuisines under the guise of being vegan. That being said it doesn't do any of the food items well at all, and ends up just being a generic American version of Asian food. Personally think there are better vegan places out there or better vegan options at more cuisine focused restaurants.

Vinit D.

Yelp
Really good vegan food at reasonable prices, and excellent service. The waitress showed energy and took care of everything we asked for. The food tasted fresh, delicious. It may not have the elegant ambiance of something like Baia, but you'll get better service and tastier food for about 40% of the price. Would highly recommend, and go again.
google avatar

Michelle L.

Yelp
Went here while visiting my friend in SF. They are all vegan. We ordered a kale salad and crispy spring rolls to share. My friend wasn't a fan of the salad but I thought it was goody the spring rolls are decent. My friend got the miso soup , but sisjt think it had enough miso in it. I got tofu teriyaki vegetables and thought it was delicious. Inside its a hole in the wall and pretty small . Service was go old although they took a long time to being our my friends sushi (forget to take a photo). Overall I would go back. Affordable price and good tasting food!
google avatar

Addison J.

Yelp
The lemongrass chicken was amazing here. Some of the best vegan food I've had. I will be coming back
google avatar

Evelyn Z.

Yelp
Straight out of a horror movie, the bathroom was dirtier than any public bathroom I've seen. I can't understand how this is possible in the middle of a pandemic. The restaurant itself didn't look clean on my way to the bathroom, I saw a box of dirty old cabbages on the floor. Very questionable cleanliness measures. Found a hair on the side of my plate. The sushi roll I ordered was incredibly messy, way too much rice, not tightly rolled, cut into different sizes and was falling apart. I'm giving them 2 stars because the pho was good. Also one of the soup spoons had built up residues of soup on it. If I wasn't pressed on time while trying to feed my daughter lunch before her nap time I would have paid and left right away. They lost a vegan customer for avoidable reasons.
google avatar

Aden G.

Yelp
Nice vegan place with a big menu. Glad I did some homework before coming in. We pretty much liked everything. I especially liked the crunchyness of crispy chowfun. Teriyaki 'beef' was excellent. Sweet and sour is good if you tend to like sweet food. Lemon grass chicken is bit salty and rice is needed to offset. Viet fragrant claypot was OK but it was our least favorite. Overall good food and service.

Adi F.

Yelp
This place is decent. Happy to support a vegan spot, but the food did not blow us away. Ordered: - Sweet and sour "chicken" - Korean tofu soup The sweet and sour was pretty good, and the soup was a comforting savory but nothing special. Mostly cabbage, some tofu, and a few mushrooms and zucchini pieces. I would come back if it weren't in an area with so many delicious options.
google avatar

Mary D.

Yelp
Ate here once and would not recommend. Prices are high for what you get (small portions and bland), the rolls are especially poor value, mostly tasteless, small and heavy on the rice. Its a shame since they are in such a good location.
google avatar

Angela F.

Yelp
DO NOT GET SUSHI HERE! Save yourself the money and go over to Cha-Ya if you want sushi. I rarely give one star reviews, but it was that bad. Table was sticky, lighting is horrible. Bad service. Cold potstickers (one side cooked, one side frozen). The only thing good was the "chicken" lemon grass. The mushroom basil was all onions. The $12 mushroom roll was six tiny pieces that did not have two kinds of mushroom. The menu said it had kaiware sprouts in it and they were nowhere to be seen and the server I had no idea what I was talking about. The bathroom was disgusting (I'm considering calling the health department). Whether you're vegetarian or not, there are tons of other amazing options in this neighborhood. I will not be back. Needless to say, not a great date place.

Yelp
We need more of this place!! Bring one to Los Angeles. You'd make a killing. Food is si incredibly yummy! My daughter and I wanted soup and ordered the Pho. Delicious! I want to try everything ha! Bookmarking for the next Time we're in SF
