Don’t Complain About Gig Workers, Complain About Their Companies | Eater

"This grocery-delivery platform ballooned during the pandemic but has become associated with frequent fulfillment errors — for example, substituting Miracle Whip for requested low-fat mayonnaise, delivering bruised apples, swapping apples for onions, sending eight bags of potatoes instead of eight individual potatoes, or bringing the wrong ice cream flavor. A viral tweet thread by Evette Dionne joking about banning male shoppers drew attention to gendered complaints about ‘incompetent’ shoppers, but the problems largely stem from the gig-economy structure: shoppers are underpaid, rely on tips, have staged strikes for better pay only to face bonus cuts, and can be penalized or suspended for matters outside their control (such as canceling an alcohol order when a customer is underage). The platform’s rating-driven batching means even a slight dip below a perfect rating can cost access to higher-paying orders — one worker reported falling from a 5.0 to 4.96 and seeing earnings drop from roughly $25/hour to below minimum wage. Customers are typically refunded for mistakes, yet shoppers still absorb rating hits; critics say many customers expect a luxury service while shoppers must accept large volumes of low-paying orders. Suggested responses range from legislative action to classify gig workers as employees to local fixes like donating unintended extras (e.g., extra potatoes) to community fridges or neighbors." - Jaya Saxena

Instacart Is Suing Uber Over Grocery Delivery Service Cornershop | Eater

"The grocery-delivery firm says it invested tens of millions of dollars and extensive effort to build what it describes as the world’s largest and most comprehensive grocery catalog, and alleges a rival misappropriated that work by copying product images, descriptions, and pricing data. It accuses the competitor of renaming files to hide ownership and of recruiting engineers experienced in scraping to carry out the effort, says it sent a cease-and-desist that went unheeded, and frames the conduct as illegal despite welcoming fair competition and innovation." - Jenny G. Instacart gives false delivery windows. My 2 hour window became a 4 hour window while the "shopper" kept adding/accepting more orders. I wasn't given the option to cancel my order after the first extension of my delivery window nor the second extension. Instead of a delivery by 8:41 pm, I was given a delivery window past 10 pm. By the time the items were delivered, it was too late to eat it. Instacart said there was nothing they could do and had the audacity to tell me they never sent the "order updates/extension notices" via the app. In addition to Instacart failing to acknowledge the many updates in their own app, they couldn't explain how I knew he shopper was accepting more orders. I went to two layers of escalation and Instacart refused to provide any accommodation. One rep falsely stated that since the "app now showed the post 10 pm timeframe," I must have agreed to it. Despite getting updates and seeing my order pending well past the original order time, Instacart said they did nothing wrong on their end. When I asked if they cared about my business, the silence and robotic responses made it very clear. They clearly think this is business as usual and rely on desperate consumers to overlook the blatant lies about delivery windows. Very disappointed but glad Instacart let me know where they stand.

Instacart adds way too many hidden costs. Not only do they charge a delivery and service fee, but they also mark up the price of almost every item—especially at stores like Publix. After comparing to in-store prices, I’ve found I’m paying about 30% more overall, and that adds up fast. You're essentially getting charged twice: once for the delivery and again through inflated prices. It’s not clearly stated, so unless you compare receipts, you wouldn’t even notice. By contrast, ordering pickup or delivery from Whole Foods through Amazon is much more transparent and affordable. Prices match what you'd pay in-store, and if you're a Prime member, delivery is often included. Instacart is convenient, but it's not worth the extra cost.

Today was the last straw. I placed a large order with an attractive tip. In spite of that, once again I was missing an item, which was 2 pounds of ground beef needed for our dinner tonight. So now I do not have the primary ingredient I need for our meal. This has started happening with my Instacart orders on a regular basis. I will be looking to try other services such as Door Dash to see if they can do any better.

They did not deliver the promises made to me by reps/supervisors earlier today. The shopper made this order a complete disaster in every aspect. Now add in the countless hours i wasted tonight for no reason apparently like my time isnt valueble.. Apparently im on the hook for their shopper spending double, getting the wrong items, forgetting others, getting duplicates of others, being hrs late, abandoning my bags and items out front.. now end of day, i still dont have the things i needed (the reasons i placed the order) and their shopper spent double what the order should have been. and the response was wait 5-10days. sorry u spent your money on nothing. We said wede give you a credit in full, but e were just kidding apparently its esier to pay southasia $8 an hr and work them 24/< than it js to just refund me back the money i spent on nothing and create an enemy for life. Odd company mantra, but whatever. For my $60 order, the shopper spent $107. they refunded me $27. which i wont see for 5-10 days regardless.... Although the last rep and super stated they would give me an instacard credit for the entire order for the trouble... i wanted to ponder refund vs credit because after this i realy didnt want to use their service again. BUT i called back. big mistake.. they no longer have an intention of making it right. apparently that window closed when the supervisor who actually cares about customer service clocked out. Oh.. you spend hundreds in orders a day... for your many kndnesses we will repay you by leaving you in the neg without the things you already paid us to get you... and uhh give us a shout when u have money again in 5-10 days.and disconnected the chat. OHHH MIC DROP!! Doesnt anyone still have customer service in the US? Not rocket science ladies and gentlemen...If someone cant understand me, how can they help me with an issue or problem! thats why nothing gets accomplished anymore. no customer service, no brand loyalty. Uts all southeast asia and sorry... Just wasted time for no reason other than to put me one day closer to having a flippin stroke!! Maybe im the idiot for thinking these people dont want to lose my business last conversation earlier this evening with a specialist & supervisor. Due to so many issues w last order, i had the option of a refund or credit in full. i wanted to think about it, ive decided to move forward with the instacart credit. i now stilll need to buy the correct items as i am without. I work hard, and my money is important to me. Yet there are no companies that I wanna support or give my business to because to them, im not a loyal customer, im another neck to axe so they can make an extra nickel. And although you agree and are sorry for the troubles, you just dontnhave the ability to make changes or do anything on your end.. what is it you do there?! what do u get paid to do? waste time? aggrevate people to the point they get so furios they give up and slam the phones and keyboards down?! ding ding ding.. weve got a winner!! So my punchline..whats it called when you place an order for essentials, get an assigned time to rcv said goods, get charged double, rcv none of the actual items from the order, and then wait in chat support for hrs to be told "buck it up lil trooper" youll get a tiny refund in 5-10days. sorry you dont have what u need and that your now in the negative but uhh give us a shout when u have more money to spend".. and MIC DROP! oh yeah.. that was my Wednesday TAA DAA

The company is a bunch of scammers, they’ll send you a message that you are receiving a refund, but if you look at your bank account they never send it. This has happened twice to me. When you follow up, they can’t give any answers.

Thought I was helping my wife out and used their service to buy groceries from our Krogers so we didn’t have to go into the store shopping. Well this is what arrived. The video is the frozen pizza we got. 🤦‍♂️ had to throw out so much food that was left in a hot car for hours. Meat, eggs, milk, multiple frozen items. Probably $80-$90 worth of food went straight to the trash. Took temp of milk it was 76 degrees.

Men shouldn't be grocery shoppers. Anyone who has had a man to shop for them will understand my review. Other than that, I give instacart a 4.5.
