My problem with the Grand Stamford, is that I have been before. Fifteen years ago, I stayed in a harbour view room, with the club lounge option the same as I did this week. So, I know what it used to be like. I wrote a glowing review on this site and I loved every moment of my stay. It was old-school, colonial (can we still say that?) luxury, with big rooms, generous and impeccable service in the lounge and amazing facilities, including an infinity pool with cocktail bar overlooking the harbour. It was perfection. ||Now, I can’t say that this recent stay was anything less than wonderful, but, it wasn’t as good. There was a refurbishment a few years ago, and, like many things in life now, you just don’t get quite so much for your money. The room was lovely, comfy, quite large, but it wasn’t as big as it used to be, the furnishings are not as luxurious, the fixtures and fittings are more pedestrian, and the shower is smaller. The club lounge, once a big, bright and airy space with free-flowing wine in the afternoon, has been moved to a windowless box in the basement, with only soft drinks in the afternoon. The staff there are good, but not as attentive as before (depending on which team members were on), the branded drinks and cocktail menu from a previous time have been replaced by basic spirits (Smirnoff and Gordon’s…!) and, to be fair, quite pleasing wine. The food selection in the lounge is also reduced, but, it is nonetheless excellent, with full compliments to the chef(s). ||The leisure facilities were sadly a bit of a let down. The beautiful infinity pool has gone (why would you do that…?) as have the cocktails that went with it. I don’t recall if there was a sauna or steam room before, but there is not one now, which seems quite a big missing attribute for a ‘luxury’ hotel. ||All things aside, I had a fantastic time at the Grand Stanford. It’s an amazing hotel, with excellent staff and some good facilities. But, sadly, it’s not nearly as excellent as it used to be.
