The 20 Essential Memphis Restaurants

"At Iris, chef Kelly English has endeavored to bring a modern take on a New Orleans-style restaurant to East Memphis. Equal parts Crescent City native and Memphis booster, English has earned tons of local and national acclaim. He first opened Iris off Overton Square in Memphis’s Midtown neighborhood in 2008, before moving his venerable fine-dining concept to a larger space (formerly home to Grove Grill) in 2022. With a sophisticated atmosphere, this spot is especially great for couples, who can share items like crab au gratin and fried oysters before digging into main courses of grilled Scottish salmon or steak iris (a New York strip with honey-roasted carrots and fried oysters)." - Andy Meek, Jackie Gutierrez-Jones

"Chef Kelly English trained in some of the best kitchens inNew Orleansbefore opening Restaurant Iris, where he now serves his homey take on French-Creole cuisine. Here, dining spaces are spread throughout the rooms of a cozy bungalow, encouraging diners to interact with other tables like guests at a convivial dinner party. A recent remodel added more modern decor and an expanded bar area where patrons without reservations can dine under a large, bayou-inspired mural that harks back to English’s Louisiana roots. On the menu you’ll find Southern classics, prepared with French techniques and international flavors. Don’t miss the corn bread–stuffed quail and the crawfish beignets, which come with a heavenly sauce ravigote ."

We ate at Iris over the weekend and had an amazing experience! The food was fabulous and our server was amazing! He was very welcoming and helpful with the menu. He also did a great job of being aware of my nut allergy and made a point to make sure the kitchen staff members were aware. I was very impressed with his attentiveness! As a party of 8, our appetizers and meals came out in a timely manner and everything was cooked to perfection. I had the “In a Pickle” cocktail and loved it! For dinner, I ordered the filet and it was super flavorful and perfectly cooked. The restaurant has such an amazing vibe! We were in a private room, and the chef even came by to welcome us and introduce himself. Loved our experience! I highly recommend Iris, and look forward to dining here again soon!

We visited for our wedding anniversary and were thoroughly impressed by both the ambiance and the food. The cocktails were expertly crafted, though I feel the presentation could be enhanced considering they are priced at $16-$18. The chocolate pie was outstanding; it had the perfect balance of sweetness and was the best I've ever had. My husband was delighted with his steak, praising its excellent cooking and seasoning. My fish dish was equally well-prepared and seasoned. We appreciated the thoughtful gesture of receiving a complimentary brownie dessert and flowers for our anniversary. My husband chose this place because my name is "Iris," and I'm really glad he did. It was a truly memorable experience for us.

Went in for some drinks and maybe a bite. Bar area was busy and the local regulara seemed to get the attention first as I was seated for a good few minutes before having to track down a bar tender who ended up not even being a bar tender, but I digress. The drinks are overpriced, but the food was great. They have a bar menu and the regular menu, which i thought was great. Tried the in house made upper scale sausage dog, and it was great. Just enough to fill me up.

My first time at Iris I tried the fish amandine and it was amazing. Beautifully cooked fish and the perfect portion size. Chef Kelly came around to thank us for coming in and we told him we would definitely be back! Staff was friendly and atmosphere was classy and the women’s restroom was decorated nicely. Definitely will be back

Ordered the fried chicken sandwich, it had really thick breading, too much for my taste, by the time i scraped it was very little chicken to enjoy. Just wasn't really impressed.

😎 Time Visited: 1 👩🏻‍💼 Summary: I didn't have high expectations, but Iris turned out to be a really satisfying dining experience. 🍝Food: I'm not familiar with Creole food, but everything from the starters to the desserts was great. The portions were definitely generous. 💬Service: Since we were a group of more than 10 people, it took some time to be served. However, the staff was kind and attentive. 🎶Atmosphere: I was pleasantly surprised by the cool interior when I opened the door. The vibe was nice and definitely Instagrammable. 💵Worth the money? N/A as I did not pay, but I would say so—much better than most upscale restaurants in Boston. 💁🏻‍♀️Would I revisit this place? Yes, definitely.

Google
I loved the classy, calm atmosphere of this place. It's so inviting and calming. The green beans were surprisingly delicious, with the right amount of garlic flavor. I will definitely be back for more. It's the perfect spot to relax and enjoy some me-time, maybe with a glass of wine. I highly recommend it! Revisited: I tried their Grilled chicken sandwich and fries with ketchup. It was so pale and not the impression I had before. The fries tasted terrible. I just had another review for a spinach dip that was bad for the person next to me.

My experience at Restaurant Iris was definitely one to remember! The food was amazing! So flavorful and well prepared! The service was impeccable with multiple people checking on us and food/drinks coming out in a timely manner! I was also in awe of the design of this restaurant! The colors, table settings, and furniture seemed to be well thought out and added to the fine dining experience! There is a skylight in the dining area that creates this beautiful natural lighting, not letting you miss a moment of the sunset! I will definitely be back again for the food and ambiance! My only critique would be for the braised collard greens. They came with pickled peaches, and I could taste the peaches. They made the greens sweet too and I don't personally care for sweet greens. Even with that it was a great experience, and I recommend it!

Yelp
Long overdue review of this wonderful establishment. We have been coming to Iris since way back when Kelly turned down NBA stars for dinner. I always loved that story, I don't care how embellished it may be. It's great that he even beat him in a one on one game later, who knew Kelly English could even dunk????!!!!! The new location is much larger, has many more seats, and a beautifully decorated interior. It's whimsical and just lovely. The bar is amazing, and even boasts its own menu. They have a Cruvinet machine that holds fine/expensive bottles of wine for sale by the glass. It's great for when you want to try something but don't want to buy the whole bottle. Brilliant! They even have an oyster shucking station right there at the bar. When this location first opened, they had another Chef behind the menu. It was good, but it wasn't Kelly English good.... If you had been to the old Iris, you knew immediately that it was different. Kelly has since taken over the kitchen and implemented his recipes and style back into the heart of the house. I even got the old Surf and Turf "Iris Style" on my last visit. Holy shit! It was so damn good!!! If you've never had it, you are missing out man. Yum. I'm drooling thinking about it. Iris is as good as ever, and now you can actually get a table within a reasonable timeframe because it can now seat so many. There are private rooms available and they even have an exhibition kitchen where KE will cook right there in front of you. What more could you ask for?? Get your ass here now! Did I even mention the seafood hoecakes??? Geez '24 - 30/100

Yelp
(Placeholder) What hasn't already been said about Kelly English's standard bearer? The food is the best in Memphis, the staff the best in Memphis, the environment and decor exceptional (hard to say the best in Memphis' when the canvas is shopping center architecture rather than, say an intimate 11 table house just off Overton Square...). There's nothing below 'remarkable' on the menu. It's also fantastic to see the chef make the rounds during service- I don't know if this is 5-star practice, a Kelly English thing, or New Orleans practice, but it speaks to the regard that staff has for its clientele (what commenting to our waitress about the booming septuagenarian gas bag that seemed to be the marshal of a party of 6 at a table across the way, our server apologized for the vociferousness of one of their 'usual patrons'. At first, I wished that she would have lambasted human Foghorn Leghorn; upon reflection, it's kind of remarkable she'd stick up for the guy, so, props; but still, quiet down, Boomer).

Yelp
I recently had the pleasure of dining at Iris restaurant not once, but twice, and each visit was a delightful experience. During my first visit, I decided to try the salmon dish, and it did not disappoint. The salmon was cooked to perfection, and the flavors were on point. The service was also excellent, making it an enjoyable dining experience overall. After some time, I decided to return to Iris to meet a colleague for drinks. However, I ended up ordering a little snack to accompany our drinks. I chose the barbecue shrimp, and it was an absolute game-changer. The shrimp were cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. It was definitely a must-try dish that I highly recommend. While glancing at the menu, something caught my eye - the duck gumbo. Although we were not planning to stay long and wanted to take the food to go, I couldn't resist trying the duck gumbo. It came with basmati rice grits, and scallions. Let me tell you, it was absolutely phenomenal. The flavors were rich and delicious, and it left me wanting more. The combination of the tender duck, flavorful broth, and the accompanying sides was a true gastronomic delight. Although I haven't been to Iris a multitude of times, the two visits I've had were truly satisfying. The second visit, in particular, blew me away with the flavors and quality of the food. I was so impressed that I am already planning to return to Iris in the near future. If you're looking for a restaurant with delicious food, excellent service, and a cozy atmosphere, I highly recommend giving Iris a try. Whether you're a seafood lover, a fan of barbecue, or simply looking to indulge in some mouthwatering gumbo, Iris is sure to exceed your expectations.

Yelp
Great combination of Southern and Cajun cuisine. Totally enjoyed everything we had. The griddle cake and BBQ shrimp starters were delish. The grit in the shrimp and grit was buttery and creamy. The desserts were also scrumptious. I hope to be back to sample the dinner menu. A+

Yelp
FIVE STARS! FIVE STARS! FIVE STARS! That's the post! FIVE STARS! I had the blessed opportunity to take my wife to brunch at Restaurant Iris and I am sooo glad that I did! I highly recommend the Corn & Crab Griddle Cakes, Redfish Clemenceau, and definitely have yourself a Mint Julip while you're there! By the way, did I mention FIVE STARS!

Yelp
We went to Cafe Iris for the first time for my birthday. The ambiance of the dining room is not what I expected. It has a very classy look to it, and the banquettes look like a place where Hollywood starlets would meet high powered directors. The menu is on the small side, but varied. We tried the crab hoecakes, the peach panzanella salad, the Redfish, and the Cobia with a side of cheesy rice grits. The crab hoecakes were positively loaded with crab, and quite tasty. The peach panzanella had the right flavors, but simply poured over a single small corn cake. I think it would have been better and make more sense had the cornbread been cut into croutons. The one really outstanding dish was the redfish. It was perfectly seasoned, and the mushroom and peas it was served with were out of this world. It paired so perfectly with the grits. The Cobia & Shrimp was disappointing. Though both the seafood components were cooked properly, the very large segments of brined tomatoes and the brown sauce poured over made the dish look and taste unappetizing to me. The service was really good, but no less than I would expect in a nearly empty restaurant. I felt the prices were reasonable, but somehow, I can't see myself returning.

Yelp
First time finally dining at Iris. It is a New Orleans style cuisine. My fave food in the world! So, I had high expectations. They did not disappoint. My hubby ordered the duck gumbo and I, half dozen raw oysters. Both were delicious. For supper we had the short ribs and the red fish. Hubby loved the meat. I enjoyed my fish. Very flavorful!! The place itself is really cool, vibrant but not busy. Very aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Wish I remember my waiter's name. She was friendly and well verse on the menu and drinks. Highly recommend!!!

Yelp
Loved it so much we returned a month later and brought the same guest with us! Love the clever and unexpected decor, and the skylight is lovely. The food was wonderful from the start to the dessert finish. Excellent!

Yelp
First time visit for a business lunch on a Friday. At 12:20pm ALL conversation and business came to a loud booming halt as a (great sounding) three piece trio (sax, bass, and snare drum) comes from the back of the restaurant. They were performing at the right volume if outside and trying to draw attention, but dang! Fortunately they ceased about 20 minutes later and we were able to return to our business and conversations. Colleagues had red fish plate and I tried the chicken sandwich. All was very good but they've certainly stayed ahead of inflation (thank you Joe B. & team). Service was fine and I saw evidence of training.

Brendan T.

Yelp
Went at 7:30p on a Wednesday with a reservation for two - seemed as though it would have been possible to go without a reservation. Space was clean and well-designed; we were seated in a booth that felt private but not cut off. Waitress was friendly and came by often. The cocktails were well-made but not worth a trip by themselves. The Iris Sour was a fairly standard whiskey sour. The Cat in the Rain was also tasty but not a must-have. The food was almost all phenomenal. The appetizers stole the show - both the barbecue shrimp and the fried green tomatoes were exceptionally well done. The charred bread with the shrimp really made the dish and our waitress was nice enough to offer more of it to mop up the barbecue sauce. The scallops were also excellent, though (as is often the case with scallops) I was glad to have ordered other dishes to complete the meal. I'd have gone home still hungry otherwise. The honey roasted carrots were good but not the best I've had. Overall a very pleasant dining experience.
google avatar

Steve D.

Yelp
The food was incredible. The BBQ Shrimp appetizer was unlike any I've ever had and possibly the best appetizer ever. Redfish and Salmon for our main course and both were exceptional. The crab and corn cake appetizer was delish. But couldn't hold a candle to the BBQ Shrimp.

Yelp
Nothing here that would take a 5 Star rating away. Quality food, great service, and cool "ambiance". Who knew this gem was tucked in the middle of a retail shopping center. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Tanja K.

Yelp
Lovely atmosphere with a Cajun creole vibe. Attentive service and wonderful food. Recomendations were spot on and we thouroughly enjoyed our evening. Make sure to try the oysters. I had them fried in the salad. And don't sleep on the chocolate terrine.

Yelp
We had a wonder dinner at Iris! We are a family of chefs, and loved the creative touches both in the main courses and starters. Would have loved to try the desserts but we were too satisfied. We'll definitely be back! Our server Jo was attentive and did a great job taking care of us. Nice job all!
google avatar

Yelp
I'd like to try one of their other menus. The drink was disgustingly strong. I had to nurse it for 2 hours. The food was okay but not worth the price.

Yelp
The ambiance is top tier ! I was sold before I even took a bite of the food . We dined here for lunch . There are daily specials for lunch . Lunch specials are approximately $20 per entree . Seating fills up fast for lunch , so we sat at the bar . The food came out extremely fast and the service was excellent. The bar tender shared his favorite dishes . We had the lunch special for the day -the shrimp creole. It was flavorful and the portion was perfect for lunch . Parking was plentiful -the restaurant is embedded in a shopping center . I had no issues parking or leaving . The restrooms were clean and decorated beautifully.

Yelp
Giving it 5 stars because that's what it deserves! My friends and I came for dinner a couple of weeks ago and I can honestly say we didn't have any complaints, no suggestions, no "they should do this"...nothing! (And this is a group of food bloggers so that should tell you something lol) The service from the bar and the table seating was great. My food was awesome! We all tried different this so what was fun. Everything was reasonably priced so it's an easy spot to come back to. Did I mention the decor is beautiful?!
google avatar

Laura R.

Yelp
Stop here for a late lunch/ early dinner. Great little place! Wait staff was awesome, great wine selection and even though the menu was very limited this time of day, my crab cakes were amazing and the largest serving I have ever had! I highly recommend this hidden gem!

Brena J.

Yelp
Had brunch Sunday, the food was delicious and Savannah was great! Will definitely be back!

K B.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. Savannah and Jo went the extra mile, to make our dining experience one that other Memphis restaurants should replicate.

Rose Z.

Yelp
We held our engagement dinner here and it was amazing! Restaurant Iris worked within our budget and created a very tasty 3 course menu for us. We reserved a private room that held 20 people and didn't feel crammed at all. We also brought our own flowers and cake to celebrate the special night!
google avatar

Jack B.

Yelp
Reservation. Greeted and seated promptly. Lilly, our server, was professional, friendly and helpful. She knew her menu and her recommendations were spot on. Food preparation and presentation was top notch. Even though the main room is cavernous, you can still have a quiet conversation. Only regret we didn't have room for dessert.

Yelp
The food is exactly what you have come to expect from Kelly English. My husband and I went for our anniversary, and he came by to congratulate us.
google avatar

Ela E.

Yelp
Lovely ambiance. Great service. Great cocktails and even better food. Highly recommend it.

Sarah C.

Yelp
Every single bartender there is amazing. Jordan, Bobby, Kent, Kenny, Lindsey... the creativity of each bartender just blows me away. The food, some could be better. The poboys are lacking in seasoning, but the SOUPS. DEAR GOD the soups are wonderful. Love the oyster options. Overall, fantastic.
google avatar

Alan P.

Yelp
Went here with my wife for dinner last weekend. Personally we like the old location in Midtown better, but this is more convenient to our house. Drinks were good. I had a martini and my wife had a specialty tequila cocktail that was pretty good. We got the seafood tower appetizer. Again, good not great. Entrees and dessert were the same. Service was excellent; our waitress was great. Again, while I like the atmosphere it's not as unique and special as the original Midtown spot. However, I definitely recommend for a date night, and they have private rooms available for large groups.
google avatar

Nichole C.

Yelp
I wanted to love this place. Kelly English seems like a great dude who strives to help his community. Unfortunately, I didn't live the food. It was a bit bland to me. We ordered a spread of dishes and spent a lot of money but walked away only loving one dish.

Lily W.

Yelp
Can't stop going back for brunch!!!! I'm almost embarrassed to say how many times I've come for brunch. The food & drinks are absolutely fantastic.
google avatar

Edwyna B.

Yelp
We had a supper fantastic time at "new Iris" I was such a huge fan of Iris 1.0 and a fan of the new Iris too. We (hubby) had the Steak Iris which was loaded with yummy delicious fried oysters! I will definitely be ordering again.

Paul T.

Yelp
Great Cajun food and service was fantastic. We went for lunch based on recommendations from a friend of mine who lived in New Orleans.

Alison B.

Yelp
Our VP came to town so we gathered the team together for a work dinner at Iris. We could not have been more pleased. The atmosphere and decor are really well done. Our server was fast, knowledgeable, and extremely hospitable - and the drinks and food were so good. You always want the location you pick to impress during a business meal and this one definitely did.
google avatar

Gregorio S.

Yelp
C'mon Kelly, this place is a disgrace to your name. First, arriving early for our reservation, we were escorted by open tables in the dining room only to be placed in your "teaching studio" for dinner? It was my wife's birthday and we were seated here? We asked to be seated elsewhere, and the hostess looked at us like with disgust. The food was very, very below average! The flounder was bland and was drenched in sauce. The rest of the meal was disappointing as well! The only saving grace to our special evening was our waitress! There are so many better places in Memphis. Save your money and go elsewhere.

Marcelle N.

Yelp
Rude bartender. There were missing chairs at our table and the bartender was rude when we pulled one of many empty chairs from the bar to our table.

Nancy B.

Yelp
Food was not good at all, beautiful place but for the price you pay it's too blend and plain
google avatar

Bilicia H.

Yelp
I came here with friends and we loved the décor and ambiance. Our server was a delight and gave really great recommendations. I highly recommend the red snapper with the crawfish etouffee, it was divine. The cocktails were light and refreshing,

Michael Z.

Yelp
Great food, impeccable service and a spectacular atmosphere! Another winner for Kelly!

Lisa E.

Yelp
For the week of a boyfriends birthday, she decided to do a gastronomic tour of Memphis. We had never been to Iris beforebut had recommendations from friends. They did not disappoint. It is hard to find a good Veal Parmesan anywhere else in Memphis and my boyfriend had Tilefish which he had never seen on a menu before. Awesome unique food selection with intimate atmosphere. We will be coming back.
google avatar

Kristin P.

Yelp
Great environment and service! My partner and I went for a late Anniversary dinner and it was delicious. The oysters were 10/10 and they even offered vegan desserts (not pictured). Our main courses were yummy as well, cooked to perfection. We will definitely be back

Joseph R.

Yelp
we had lunch today and i am glad to see the food quality and flavors are back io the outstanding we have been used to. Chef Kelly welcome back to the kitchen we missed you.
google avatar

Pam B.

Yelp
The Veal Parmesan was dry. The pasta and sauce were disappointing. While the food was disappointing, the waitress was very attentive. The restaurant interior design is welcoming. I do hope the food improves, as it is an expensive place to dine.

Steve M.

Yelp
I know friends have had great experiences at Iris and on multiple occasions, but unfortunately our visit there couldn't have been worse. I get sometimes restaurants get very busy and delays are to be expected, but 45 minutes is a long time to wait for drinks, yes I said 45 minutes until we got out first drinks!!! Eventually we had a meal, overcooked trout which was so tough we couldn't just cut it, we had to pull it apart. There were 4 of us and we all agreed the only nice dish was the risotto, and unfortunately it was stone cold! Considering the cost of the meal, not far from $600 for 4, this ranks as one of our worst ever meals.

Martha M.

Yelp
What a disappointment! Our lunch was so underwhelming. The burger was ordered medium but came out rare and bloody and the fries were undercooked - limp and greasy - 2 more minutes in the frier would have made a difference. My Iris salad was not good - the dressed crab was not fresh. It smelled fishy and the chilled shrimp still had pieces of shell on them. Whoever is in the kitchen seriously needs to pay attention to detail especially at their prices!

Linda W.

Yelp
Wowza! Every single bit of our experience was phenomenal! Delicious food, spectacular service, unexpected and amazing entertainment, and an absolutely stunning atmosphere on top of it all. We highly recommend to anyone who loves a nice meal(even for a large group- we had 9). We will definitely be back!!
google avatar

Melissa N.

Yelp
Great service! Our waiter was kind, informative, helpful and never rushed us. Three of us in our party & we especially enjoyed the Seared Brussel Sprouts from the a la carte sides. Parmesan risotto was fine but not much flavor. All of us enjoyed our main entree fish. We also each enjoyed our cocktails.

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
Sat at the bar which is a beautiful bar. We were given the regular menu versus the bar menu (maybe since they new we were newbies and didn't one there was a bar menu). When we asked the bar tender for recommendations, he kept pushing his "favorite fish dish." We said okay that sounds great and ordered two glasses of wine as well! In fairness we didn't ask the price, but couldn't be more than $30ish sitting at a bar, right? After being disappointed in our meal we asked for the check and to our very big surprise our fish was $68. First, who else in Memphis charges $68 for fish that isn't lobster with nothing but scarce crab and almonds on top? Second, it was drowning in so much butter that it became too soggy that we couldn't finish it. Sad thing is we loved Iris in midtown and was excited it was now close to where we live. Unfortunately it won't be a regular if we decide to go back at all.

Midtown P.

Yelp
Several items (fried green tomatoes and veal parm) felt like they sat under a heat lamp because they were waaaaaayyy overdone. Could barely cut into the tomatoes and veal was so chewy. The topping on the oysters rockefeller drowned the oysters, like it was a mound so unappetizing because the ratio of topping to oyster was way off. Have dined at original Iris in Midtown many times pre-Covid and it was always a supremely special treat. Was so looking forward to this night. Service was subpar/laughable and only one dish (steak) out of 4 wowed us. Wtf? What has happened to our once favorite restaurant for special occasions? One last note to management: If you are going to be pretentious enough to have wine lockers with engraved owner plaques in your lobby, the quality of your food should be high enough to cop that kind of style.

Cory P.

Yelp
Love this place. Could eat here every day. Everything is well done. The staff, the dishes, the wine.... All top notch every time
