Best Restaurants and Bars Near Union Square in Downtown San Francisco | Eater SF

"Iron Horse Cocktails is a local favorite for a few reasons, despite the cozy footprint of the space. The drinks are solid and poured expertly, and the dark speakeasy vibe actually feels cool, not manufactured. Pair that with the bar’s daytime business, a cute (but small) coffee kiosk at the front that serves all manners of coffee, including espressos, cortados, and lattes, plus boozy versions of those coffee drinks if you can get there before the kiosk closes at 2:30 p.m." - Dianne de Guzman

Iron Horse Cocktails Review - Union Square - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"If you’ve been staring at a computer so long that you want to forget that technology exists, head to Iron Horse in Union Square after work. This place feels like it could have existed in the 1930s with a dark wood bar and nature mural that looks like it could’ve been stolen out of an English lord’s home office. They have a Happy Hour that runs until 7pm Monday through Saturday with things like gimlets, rose martinis, and negronis for around $10, which isn’t as good as the prices would have been before computers existed, but it’s a solid deal for anywhere in SF." - Will Kamensky

Stopped here on the walk back to my hotel. Great vibe and fantastic cocktails! I had the We’ve Got the Beet. Absolutely delicious! I sat at the bar downstairs and several people ordered the Some Like it Hot, which looked amazing. This is a must-visit spot for me now when I’m in SF.

Google
Love this bar.! The drinks are so good. They have a great menu and if you’re undecided you can always ask their recommendation. They are all very friendly. I especially love when Brendan makes my drinks. Brendan always makes me a Lemon drop or Raspberry drop. I just love the way he makes them. The best in SF! The atmosphere is very classy and cozy. They make you feel very comfortable. This is a place you have to try. You won’t be disappointed.

Google
Great spot for a drink! Absolutely delicious espresso martini and our bartender Preslava was great to chat with and also made some killer drinks. The ambiance was nice and glassware was enchanting. I would definitely stop by next time Im in SF.

Google
Got charged $5.25 for a small fountain Diet Coke with a lemon during Happy Hour—seriously? No alcohol, just overpriced syrup water. If they’re charging that much for a basic soda, I can’t imagine what their cocktails cost. Feels like a total rip-off. Won’t be back.

Sofiya Sirovskaya

Google
The atmosphere and the ambiance was beautiful- brick walls, lanterns and wood made you feel like you were in a very cozy space away from the craziness of the city. Not only is the staff friendly but they make incredibly delicious, well balanced and unique drinks. My first time here and it’s officially one of my favorite spots in SF. If you’re a mezcal lover - highly recommend their drink “some like it hot” passion fruit & citrus with a spicy sesame seed oil on top is out of this world! But tried a few others and you can’t go wrong with any of the drinks on their menu. Overall wonderful time, thank you for a memorable experience! 🖤

Google
We recently visited San Fran for a weekend and stumbled upon this hidden gem of a bar. It was such a cool vibe inside. Very chill, dimly lit, bluesy music playing softly. There was only one bartender for the place which was perfect because it’s a small, quaint bar. He was AMAZING and made incredible cocktails. We were so impressed! There’s no food available, it’s literally just a cocktail bar which was perfect for us. I HIGHLY recommend this bar if you’re in the area! I’d go back to San Francisco just for this bar.

Google
Had cocktails on New Year's Eve at Iron Horse Cocktails. I used to go there when I was in my 20s about 30 years ago and it was great to see it is still there and still the same comfortable local bar I remember. We had a great New Year's Eve celebration with friends and I would recommend everyone who wants cocktails try this place and Maiden Lane is a beautiful gateway to Union Square

Google
I am super exited that I found this really cool bar hidden on Maiden Ln allay. It’s open at 7:30am Monday-Friday as coffee shop and after 2pm turns into speak easy craft cocktail bar with happy hour 2-7pm. Staff is knowledgeable and very friendly. I had Negroni that they age in oak barrels. Absolutely delicious. Beautiful decode. Has mezzanine level and super clean bathrooms. Definitely recommend and will be back soon.

Yelp
This bar feels like an awesome little hidden gem. Our bartender Pasha (idk if I'm spelling that right) was the best. Drinks were super tasty, and he whipped up the most delicious whiskey shots I've ever had. It's a cozy, vibey place with good lighting and the perfect mix of music playing. Highly recommend to go grab a drink here.
google avatar

Yelp
Very low key interior, not very friendly staff. But excellent cocktails. Bartender knows what he is doing.

Yelp
Came here a few times after other events in SF (eg. Dubs game, dinner, etc) and we weren't disappointed! I like that it's a hidden gem and not super obvious or in your face, and both times I went it wasn't too crowded (late night weeknights). Haven't been here on a weekend so I can't speak to that. Pros: - very unique cocktails! I got the English breakfast both times I went, and the first time it was served a fun teacup and comes with a Biscoff cookie. We also tried the About Thyme and city bird. If cocktails aren't your thing, I think they also serve beer and has a full bar. - Overall pretty clean, small bar space downstairs and a more private area upstairs - Bar tender was nice, no significant issues. Clientele was chill and mostly small parties of 2-4 young professionals. Cons: - Weirdly it was really stuffy and hot inside - Even with just my t-shirt it was super warm and made me feel even thirstier. almost too cozy. - No bag hooks on the tables in the downstairs area - I think this suggestion would elevate the experience LOL. Overall, unique cocktails, most of the prices are $15 or so each (which can feel pricy), but I think it's a fun place to try something you wouldn't normally drink and be pleasantly surprised. The service was a little slow but it seemed to be because there was only 1 bartender running the whole place. The only reason it wasn't a 5 star for me is because it was so hot both times I was there. But I definitely would come back! Would recommend eating before you come here, I don't think they serve food

Yelp
Bar area downstairs, plus more private tables upstairs. Mostly empty on a late Tuesday afternoon. I got The Fitzgerald ($14) and it was excellent, 4.5 stars. Light, refreshing, & citrusy, just the way I like it.

Yelp
If I had never been to a bar on Maiden Lane, I think I would have expected to find a touch of elitism in the cocktails and likely the bar staff. However, since my first visit last year, Iron Horse has never struck me that way. The reality is that it does attract a more corporate clientele, meaning on any given weeknight, you'll find small herds of after-work suits clumped together like lemmings on a cliff. I prefer it when the suits were gone not because I'm antisocial but... Well, actually I am antisocial, especially if I slowly sip the very smooth $14 Esptesso Martini. They add salted caramel, a nice touch in an already fabulous cocktail (photo). Don't bother me, will ya? That's because I'm usually chatting with the friendly bartender here. They're cordial to the suits who wallow in their shallowness. I appreciate the pub-like touches in the decor, and the upstairs mezzanine is ideal for private tête-à-têtes but I was short a tête. COCKTAILS - 4 stars...that's one smooth martini and a nice size AMBIANCE - 4 stars...a vintage tavern of rich woods and bricks SERVICE - 4 stars...friendly TOTAL - 4 stars...the civilized bar RELATED - Exploring the FiDi? Yelp
We were in the area for dinner earlier and wanted an espresso martini to end our night. This was nearby which was perfect, it's such a cute hidden gem; it had a lovely old school vibe and was playing all the smooth r&b jams. The bartender was very nice and these martinis were so good! Beautiful flavor of coffee and a touch of salted caramel. The inside was really cute and then upstairs was a very cozy intimate seating area which we took upon ourselves to enjoy :) the prices were also not bad at all! Def come by here!

Yelp
Great little spot hidden on maiden lane away from the hustle and bustle of union square. Good vibes and mix of tourists and locals. Perfectly crafted cocktails with cozy atmosphere. Always a good spot for a few drinks before dinner in the area
google avatar

Alex A.

Yelp
Pros: bathroom was clean Cons: drinks meh, location is sketch at nite. Note this is a "cocktail bar" so don't go or expect wine. The drink menu was not updated, bartender had attitude (borderline rude), had a happy hour sign outside the door--on Saturday, that was only M-F.
google avatar

Athena L.

Yelp
We had the City Bird and the Fitzgerald. Both were very delicious, even though I'm definitely not a floral drink type of person. Both drinks were very easy going down, and as a person who enjoys alcoholic drinks without being able to taste the alcohol, they were right up my alley. Even though I couldn't taste the alcohol, it for sure kicked in while walking back to the hotel (hehe). We were partial to the City Bird because of the very citrusy and fruity flavors, but I'm sure their other drinks are just as good. Ambience was really chill, perfect for a late night when you just want to relax and chat with friends.

Yelp
Wonderful cocktail experience. I highly recommend making this part of your cocktail experience in SF. This place was incredible, throws down with all the best mixology bars in San Francisco. Trick Dog, True Laurel, Pacific Cocktail Haven... It was just as good if not more unique than anything in SF. Nice ambiance with nice seating. Definitely one of the best!
google avatar

Aaron B.

Yelp
Hole in the wall place. Pretty good cocktails and service. Music was really loud on a Sunday afternoon and the fruit used to garnish looked rotten. Still, mixology on point. Service fine. Prices high. Even with all that. I would return with friends.

Christian V.

Yelp
This is absolutely one of the worse espresso martinis I've ever had. Tastes so watered down and you can also see how clear it is in the picture provided. If you were thinking about coming here it's more of a gin bar. My friend's tiki drink was way better but I didn't order that and I won't be back either. It was also a very empty bar as well only two other people inside here.
google avatar

Billy L.

Yelp
This is a quait bar ans lounge. The bartenders were nice. There is a second floor seating. The drinks were good. I had a pomegranate martini and it was amazing.y friend had an espresso martini and her drink was delicious. We went here because of the happy hour sign that we saw on the street. They have a menu for happy hour from 5pm to 7pm. It was lnt crowded during their happy hour on a friday.
google avatar

Andrew S.

Yelp
Fantastic bar with fantastic decor. The paintings and murals are relatively new, and create a bucolic scene of idyllic rural life. Would recommend for people looking for bars in the financial district.
google avatar

Vanessa D.

Yelp
Came here again for happy hour. It was packed for 5pm. Do like this spot a lot. Ordered "Tell it Like It Is". Really liked it a lot!
google avatar

Chad C.

Yelp
Great hole in the wall upscale bar. Has a special vibe with a great bar and sitting area along with an upstairs loft with both tables and seating. We came for happy hour however decided to grab the drinks off the regular menu. Had ordered the espresso martini- one of the best we have had. About thyme- nice pepper drink with thyme and a raspberry margarita. Everyone loved their cocktail and a great place to grab drinks before hitting the streets of San Francisco!
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
Been here for drinks a couple times, usually in the evening on weekends. Drinks: 3 Decor: 3 Service: 4 Drinks were good, and the bar was pretty empty each time (maybe around 4-6 people downstairs with total seating of about 10 downstairs and another 10-15 upstairs where there's a couple more tables and a few benches. Good place if you're looking for a simple, no frills bar in fidi.
google avatar

Chang T.

Yelp
One of the best hidden bars in SF. Located by Union Square. The bar has a very classy and cozy ambiance. It is usually pretty noisy downstairs but for more intimacy you can go upstairs where it's more private with private booths and all. The decor looks great with it's European-inspired props and paintings. The drinks are fabulous. They do their own unique cocktails and have a wide selection of bottles too. They make a great Old Fashion but heard from the lovely bartender, gin is their specialty. Service is great. They are very welcoming and it's an all women staff. Very easy on the eyes and they are chatty with customers while making killer drinks. Definitely recommend you checking out this place.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing cocktail bar with deep SF roots! The menu at this spot is top tier, and for the quality of drinks for the price... it's a hidden gem in the city. Tucked down Maiden Lane, this quaint cocktail bar serves spirits, wine and beer all night. It's well lit with a second floor that gives off church chapel vibes. There was only one bartender for the whole place on a Saturday night, so while the service was sluggish, the drinks were some of the best concoctions I've had in a long time. I'm looking forward to coming back and ordering another Fitzgerald for sure!
google avatar

May L.

Yelp
An antique-themed bar with European paintings, glass chandeliers, and cool plant-themed cocktails. The Fitzgerald was my favorite. It has a sweet light taste with cold foam and flower petals on top. Gets a little cramped on the bottom floor, but upstairs has more seating. Cool spot and nice vibes.
google avatar

Maya R.

Yelp
A nice little spot to grab a drink, little on the pricier side even with happy hour and drinks seemed on the sweeter side though good. We liked the ambience upstairs, though sound really echos and it got loud with lots of people coming in after a nearby conference. Quick and efficient service.
google avatar

Emily Grace K.

Yelp
Drinks were amazing and ambiance was 10/10, you have to go here! So glad we found this place. Right off iconic Maiden Lane in Union Square, location is perfect.
google avatar

Michael N.

Yelp
So I was looking for a happy hour spot to go to near yerba buena gardens on a Saturday afternoon and you would be surprised that it is kind of a weird time to find an open bar. Luckily, this spot was open on Maiden Lane and I brought my group of friends to grab a drink. Well, from the cool wood panel vibes to the disco music blaring, i was transported to the 70s! It felt cool yet chic. Service was great. Bartender made these affordable craft cocktails quickly. I don't think they serve food, otherwise we would have gotten some!
google avatar

Paris A.

Yelp
What a great place to get after work drinks! My friend and I came in here after a long day of work and the ambiance was perfect! We loved the low light. The drinks were also incredible! I got two some like it hot and one tiki temple. The some like it hot came with drops of hot sesame oil on top and it was unlike anything I had before! The bartenders were super nice and quick with making the drinks. It was hard not to take more pictures of the drinks because they looked so good!
google avatar

Joel G.

Yelp
I came here on a midday in the middle of week. The place has great interior, like something out of an old Victorian bar. The aesthetic you expect from San Francisco. There was only one other couple in the bar, and the bartender look pretty swarmed. She was able to make our complicated drinks. They were delicious, the price you expect. The room was a bit dark for me, which can give me headaches at times. Great place for a chat if you're taking a walk downtown.
google avatar

Millie K.

Yelp
We had a happy hour here on a Tuesday. It's supper cozy and they have an upstairs as well, great for private conversation and small gatherings. I also loved their cocktails selections, but I finished mine so far, I didn't take a picture of my drinks! Definitely worth to walk in if you are in the area.
google avatar

Cheri L.

Yelp
Down Maiden Lane, you'll find a cocktail bar that opens up early in the day for your coffee fix! They even offer a menu of different coffee cocktails, just in case you needed more than caffeine for the day. There is a nice little barstool area inside and a cute little street seating set up for you to enjoy your drinks on the spot. Service was super friendly! Bathroom is available in the back bar area.

Yelp
Iron Horse is a smaller, more intimate cocktail bar tucked away in an alleyway conveniently located off Market Street in Union Square. Apparently this bar used to be a restaurant in the 1950s. The story goes that Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe had their wedding at City Hall and had their reception here which is a cool tidbit. My first drink was the night and day ($11) which was slightly bitter from the bruto americano. The bartender mentioned it's a lot more bitter than Campari so they only put 0.25oz in the drink. I said that this tasted like a rye negroni and she said that was what they were going for. My second drink was the Fitzgerald ($13) which was essentially a gin lavender sour. The aquafaba made the drink vegan (as opposed to egg white) and added a nice frothiness. If you like lavender you'll like this drink. I was told this drink has been on the menu since the beginning and they can't take it off without uproar from patrons. My third drink was the tiki temple ($13) which was on the fruitier and sweeter side but you could still taste the rum. It very much had that classic tiki flavor profile. They had the option for vodka or aged rum which was interesting because tiki drinks typically don't have vodka. The bartender mentioned it's because they don't have many vodka drinks on the menu and some people order it with vodka for something different. They have happy hour until 7pm which includes $2 off some cocktails on their menu. This is definitely a bar that's not as well-known in the San Francisco area but has a lot of history and some really good drinks. My bartender Angela was awesome giving me tidbits on the history of the bar. The interior was nicely decorated and the vibes were great.
google avatar

Michael A.

Yelp
Iron Horse Cocktails was a great find (thanks to Yelp!) that was walking distance from our hotel. With very solid reviews, this was a spot that we had to check out. While we only stayed for a couple drinks, it was a memorable experience. I loved the decor and ambience. We started at the main bar downstairs, but ended up in the cool upstairs area for most of our visit. I would recommend stopping in here for a drink.

Joe K.

Yelp
Classic room. Friendly bartenders. Happy we visited and will drop by again when in the neighborhood before dinner.
google avatar

John W.

Yelp
I knew it was too good to be true because after raving about their cocktails I went here on a Saturday during the day and caught a different bartender. The cocktails were unfortunately not balanced. He was a nice guy, but I don't think he's even close to the level of the taller gentleman we had the previous outing. Consistency is difficult to execute in a bar like this but I definitely think they need it, because if you come here on the wrong day it is night/day on the flavors.

Natasha S.

Yelp
Beautiful place and personal, very nice location, super cool cocktails, lovely coffee spot and seating outside enjoy coffee and weather
google avatar

Daisy B.

Yelp
very nice and fun bar a little hidden behind Union Square, but it's very convenient to get to there by walking or by vehicle. the best drinks and the best stuff . I get to meet people from many countries there and all around the world . Definitely recommending it for a fun hang out night in the City . Enjoy

Yelp
I and my wife loved this place. Very nice ambiance, friendly staff and cocktails are great.

Allister D.

Yelp
This is a great cocktail spot. First off, it's located in the Maiden Lane alleyway which is awesome and gives off a secretive vibe; kind of like a speakeasy. This place is slightly small but has enough seating inside, bar seating and a few tables. It's low lighting and dim, intimate, and a beautiful menu with a variety of drinks that contain exotic mixes. I loved their 'Better with Thyme' cocktail; gin based drink with citrus & thyme notes. It also contains floral notes as well. My friend also ordered an 'English Breakfast' which was served in a tea cup! This cocktail was gin infused with earl gray, Demerara, Aquafaba, and tea sprinkle. My other friend ordered a Big Apple which was almost like a sweet & sour apple bite with a salty kick. This was unique and tasting. Iron Horse has now become one of my favorite cocktail spots in the city and a great go-to every time.
google avatar

Therese H.

Yelp
Great vibe in here, with beautiful chandeliers and speakeasy vibes. The kind of bar you can sit and have a conversation with friends--upstairs has cute booths and lots of seating. Fave drink is definitely Some Like It Hot with mezcal, sesame chili oil and passionfruit !
google avatar

Rosemary G.

Yelp
She was the bartender, She made us drinks, we drunk em', got drunk. Jk didn't get drunk but great cocktail!
google avatar

Kyla Patricia A.

Yelp
This place has very little lighting. It felt like I was walking into a Hollister. Nonetheless, the drinks were very good. I don't know if the bartender meant to slam down the menus but it's okay. I got the strawberry margarita and the sunset. The strawberry margarita was on the happy hour menu but the sunset was not. Even without the happy hour prices, the drinks are decently priced!! would visit again to try the other drinks they have.
google avatar

Casey R.

Yelp
Everything was amazing and the staff was so friendly! I will definitely be back next time I am in town!
google avatar

Laurie W.

Yelp
Definitely going back!!! let's talk about the star of the show--the cocktails! The mixologists at Iron Horse Cocktails are true artists in their craft. They skillfully crafted each drink with precision and creativity, resulting in a mesmerizing array of flavors. From classic cocktails with a twist to their unique and innovative creations, every sip was a journey of pure bliss for my taste buds. The quality of ingredients and the meticulous attention to presentation made each drink a work of art.

Yelp
A Spirited Delight: Iron Horse Cocktails Exceeds All Expectations! I recently had the pleasure of visiting Iron Horse Cocktails, and let me tell you, it was an absolute delight! From the moment I stepped foot in this charming establishment, I knew I was in for a treat. The ambiance at Iron Horse Cocktails is simply mesmerizing. The dimly lit space, adorned with stylish decor and cozy seating, creates an intimate and inviting atmosphere. It's the perfect place to unwind and indulge in some well-crafted libations.
google avatar

Yelp
Unassuming and cool spot for some great cocktails. Tried a few different whiskey based cocktails and they were all delicious. Also the environment was perfect. Worth a visit.

Yelp
11/15/2022 - was looking for a place to drink and this cocktail bar just happened to be nearby and open. it wasn't busy when we came but the place really had an intimate feel and the overall ambience was great. whether you're drinking inside or at the tables outside, it's a very peaceful/relaxing environment for you to just unwind for the day. service and drinks were both excellent. definitely would recommend this place, and will visit if i'm ever in town again. thanks for a wonderful evening!

Dragan S.

Yelp
Love this spot. Very friendly and knowledgeable stuff, great cocktails, my favorite is City Bird, nice place to chill and have a quality drink.
google avatar

Jaclyn Y.

Yelp
This is a really cool spot! The vibe and ambiance are awesome. As others have said, it's located in a charming alleyway, and during the pandemic they have set up a few seats outside. The cocktails are strong but well-crafted. The decor is elegant and unique. This is a place that's classy enough for date night but also relaxed enough for meeting up with a group of friends. We ordered the tiki drinks and enjoyed them.
google avatar

Jen T.

Yelp
Loved the martini, which was smooth and very tasty, though it was a bit weird that the bartender used her bare fingers to pick the olives out of the brine and put them onto the toothpick. Is that normal? At least the brine probably killed off anything bad... The Long Goodbye (I think that's what it was called) was very refreshing and well-balanced. The fact that happy hour goes till 7 ($10 cocktails) was great! There was ample seating when I went on Thursday evening, so that was nice.
google avatar

Connie Z.

Yelp
Iron Horse Cocktails serves coffee starting 7:30am on weekdays, boozy coffee drinks are available 9:30am and onwards Loved the rose latte. Please be patient as your baristas are Ukrainian refugees (English is their second language). I really appreciated the Eastern European way of doing business - the ordering process is straightforward with no extra fluff and BS

Yelp
Some of the best experiences in life are those that are unplanned. In this case it turned out to be an excellent shift in plans. My friend and I had planned to meet for coffee so I searched on Yelp for a swank coffeehouse. Iron Horse Cafe popped up. The coffeehouse really isn't a coffee house as much as it is a coffee stand inside of another establishment. The two are separated by an accordion-style gate until the bar opens in the afternoon. At the time, I didn't know about the bar so when I saw the bartender removing a sign out front, I thought the cafe was closing. Instead, she told me the bar was opening. Wait, there's a bar? Quick change of plans! Here's how we went from having coffee to having cocktails. Direction. My friend walked the wrong direction (thanks Google maps) which made her late and walk further than anticipated from FiDi. I said to her, "well, if it's any consolation there's also a bar here." Any woman that has to walk extra blocks in high heels, can understand my friend's frustration. So, coffee turned into a cocktail. * Alice In Wonderland Gin Infused with Orange Peels | Fresh Citrus | Simple Syrup | Angostura & Peychaud's Bitters | Orange Twist It sounds like gin and juice but let me tell you, this drink was far more than simply orange juice and gin. Even on a chilly, winter afternoon, it was refreshing, naturally fragrant and had an appropriate amount of alcohol. I forgot to take a photo but it was served in a trumpet-shaped martini glass. It was delicious and for a mid-day cocktail, it was all I needed to wrap up my afternoon. Iron Horse is located on Maiden Lane, a small ally-street tucked away in downtown, blocks from Chanel, Valentino and Dior. A few of my favorite guilty pleasures in the area. There are about 3-4 tables + chairs out front. Since the street is closed to vehicles, you can sit and sip in safety. We opted to sit upstairs in the balcony area. The lighting is fairly dim upstairs so if you have difficulty seeing in dark places, I wouldn't recommend it. We stayed because it was warmer than downstairs. Service was nice, although no one came to check on us while we were upstairs. There was only 1 server but still, that would have been nice. I would absolutely return for a coffee or cocktail. I

Yelp
A very cute hidden bar on Maiden Lane. I only found this spot because I was searching for a bar nearby and this place popped up! The wall art is beautiful and the ambiance was relaxing. I ordered a vodka cranberry and my friend had sparkling water. The bartender was very nice and attentive. This is a great spot if you want a relaxing night
