The Best Seafood Markets In Boston

"In the early ’90s, the founder of Island Creek was supposedly farming quahog clams. Trying to determine exactly how a quahog was different from a steamer led us down a clam-sized hole on YouTube - a snapshot of a day in the life at The Infatuation. It also reminded us that we prefer oysters anyway, and thankfully those harvested from Island Creek can be ordered year-round. Those bivalves can also be shipped nationwide for free, and we can’t think of a more New England-y gift for your friends and family." - joel ang

Island Creek Oysters - Review - Duxbury - Boston - The Infatuation

"In the early ’90s, the founder of Island Creek started a quahog clam farm in Duxbury. Fortunately for us, the clam farm didn’t pan out and Island Creek became the oyster powerhouse we know today, selling their namesake oysters along with caviar, scallops, and, yes, clams. You can visit their shops in Duxbury and Portland, ME, or ship those bivalves nationwide for free." - Joel Ang

Google
I bought two bags of oysters. One bag was sweet and succulent. The other bag had dead and dry oysters in it. First time this has happened. For the money spent, it was a disappointing value.

Bikerz Finest

Google
This was at one point a 5 star review but has dropped to 3 star for small size, price and lack of quality service. I never write bad reviews but after dropping $200 on tiny oysters I’m not a happy camper. I have supported ICO for years buying quality products w great service. That was not the experience I had today. I’ll post pics once I find a tiny knife to open tiny shells

Google
First time here and was passing through. They had some delicious Island Creek oysters for $1.75 each.

Google
I came across this store, when I did a quick google search for caviar. I was very glad I did, they have a small but good selection of caviar. The young lady who helped me was very helpful and friendly. This was a good buying experience for me, as I am currently working in Newport, RI. I would most definitely drive back up and buy more caviar from this shop. Thanks

Google
I'm no oyster expert, but I've had these multiple times and they are always delicious. I think it's also pretty great deal considering the high quality product you're getting.

the hotdog with caviar is an absolute must ! the oysters, frozen drinks and italian spritz is amazing as well!

Cute little shop with a nice selection of tinned fish and fresh oysters. Staff is very knowledgeable and helpful.

Google
Yesterday was my first time visiting Island Creek retail shop. I got 8 Island Creek oysters and 8 Aunt Dotty oysters for V day. They were incredible. Meaty, briney, sweet, earthy. So delicious. The person who served me was knowledgeable, friendly and polite. She seemed happy to answer my questions about flavour profile, etc. I will be buying oysters from here again!

Yelp
I could not help but give this place five stars. It was a beautiful Saturday my wife and I were visiting my son from Florida Julia was super friendly and quick yes you have to wait online to order your drinks and food. Experience is well worth it. I would highly recommend the oysters of course. Salty and fresh. They were busy, but you can tell they were working their butts off. excellent job we will come back !

Yelp
Omg where to even start. We came here for an influencer event where we could try anything on the menu for their new seaport location and we tried it all. Our top favorites to get again were the oysters, sashimi, and green goddess dip. Honorable mention to the caviar hot dog which was super delicious I just don't think I'd get it again over the other options! Great spot for large groups, a date night, or to bring your pups!

Yelp
If I could give more than five stars, I would. Ricky at Island Creek isn't just a server--he's a life-changing experience. I'm not even being dramatic when I say he is the best person I've ever met in my entire life. His energy, kindness, attention to detail, and genuine warmth completely transformed my night--and honestly, my week. Because of Ricky, I'm now basically a full-time resident of Island Creek. I don't come for the oysters (though they're incredible), I come for Ricky. He made me feel like royalty while still keeping things fun, personal, and down-to-earth. You know how some people just get it? Ricky gets it. Every restaurant needs a Ricky. If you go to Island Creek, ask for him. You'll understand immediately. I would give up every other restaurant in Boston to just sit in Ricky's section for the rest of my life. Thank you, Ricky. You're a legend.

Yelp
They seem understaffed (at least indoors), so I think that affected our experience a lot. I'm not sure if you're supposed to grab a menu seat yourself, but that's what us and everyone else that came in after did. A bit more guidance or signage would be helpful on that front. The food (a dozen oysters and shrimp cocktail) took a while to get to us even though the indoor seating wasn't super busy when we ordered (it started filling up after though). The oysters tasted good, but our dozen were pretty sandy/gritty, definitely moreso than any other oysters that I've ever had. I also never got the water that I ordered, even though someone checked on us and said they'd bring it to me (ended up getting it myself from a tap that they have, but again, not sure if I was supposed to do that). Again, it just felt understaffed. The staff was friendly (and a bit apologetic). The view was great and the outdoor seating looked fun, if that's what you're coming here for. The tinned fish vending machine in the shop was also a cute idea. Overall, I'd probably lower my expectations for the eating experience itself next time, but would like to come back to try the farm tour.

Yelp
I don't have too many other oyster experiences to compare to, but we just had the best afternoon at Island Creek Oysters It was such a beautiful day, the outdoor space was so cozy and beautiful, and we enjoyed trying all the variations of oysters they had to offer. Cool to see the oyster fishing contraptions (?) out on the water too. Overall just an awesome New England vibe and will definitely return if given the chance!
google avatar

Yelp
Pleasant spot to enjoy fresh, local oysters and other seafood. Enjoy a seat with a view whether you decide to sit indoors or outdoors. Check out their events calendar to see if they are hosting oyster farm tours or have other special events like salt water sauna.

Tom R.

Yelp
If you like oysters, it doesn't get any better than this. We had Row 34s, Aunt Dotties and Island Creeks. All were fabulous, with subtle differences depending upon where they were grown. A bit crowded after a sailing regatta, but that speaks to the popularity of this place. It's all outdoors, but plenty of umbrellas.
google avatar

Anthony N.

Yelp
Stopped by island creek on a summer Saturday afternoon. It was really busy, but had a nice vibe with the music. We did have to wait about 40 min to get a table as you can't go to the outdoor area without a table. They do have a small bar to go to while you wait. The frozen margaritas and cocktails were really good. The oysters and crab Rangoon dish was tasty as well. Great scenery with the water in the background.

Yelp
I received a shipment labeled Wellfleet oysters as a Father's Day/ birthday gift from my children. They arrived well packed, fresh and tasty. But they were extremely small. I've eaten a lot of Wellfleet oysters over the years. I've never seen any of this size before--a little disappointing.

Yelp
A++ for family friendly spot to enjoy raw oysters and fresh crab sandwich, with a toddler! Colleen our server was fantastic and brought out some toys for our toddler to keep occupied while we enjoyed a sampling of local oysters, clams and the crab sandwich. Loved the outdoor area that overlooks the marina; so picturesque.

Yelp
Enjoy the hatchery tour, would 100% recommend! Received a thorough explanation of the growing process. Afterwords went on a boat ride an ear raw oysters. The boat ride is byob! I visited the gift shop with quality branded clothing. I bought some canned mussels, also had a bunch of options in the vending machine. Overall, I had a really good time and would highly recommend!

Yelp
Kudos to the prompt delivery service from the east (Duxbury, MA) to the west coast (Hercules, CA)! My work fam and I usually do an annual oyster bbq picnic and we didn't have time to drive to Tomales Bay. My friend ordered 200 oysters online ($354 with tax and shipping) to be delivered to my place for 8/30. I had called their customer service line to confirm the oyster storage and delivery time. The guy on the phone was super helpful and provided the storing instructions and let me know that FedEx would deliver the oysters 12-5p. They arrived around 11:30a- yay! In the box, you will find the oysters packed well in mesh bags with ice packs surrounding them, and instructions on how to keep 'em cool and ready for your event. When the oysters arrive, take them out of the box and put them on a cookie sheet in the fridge topped with a damp cloth until ready to eat! If you need to transport them, simply put the oyster bags in a cooler and surround them with the frozen ice packs. (Refreeze the ice packs upon arrival.) Oysters were very tasty (raw or cooked) and we had more than enough for our picnic. We loved the meaty ones with the oyster juice! Make sure your have persistent shucker(s) present- there are some that you have to maneuver the right way to pop open. I would definitely recommend ordering from Island Creek Oysters - we had a wonderful experience!

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place but after trying ~5 times, I can't see myself going back. The system to be seated and to order is flawed. It's a stressful experience / not enjoyable. They would be better off just allowing a fixed capacity of people in and allowing open seating and ordering from the bar just like any other bar/brewery type place. Instead you wait in line to enter and "be seated" but there's no wait staff to take your order and therefore you have to order from a window. They don't hand you your drink at that point and you then again have to wait for the drinks to be brought to your table. You cannot get up or risk losing your table. One person has to remain at the table while the other is waiting in long lines to order. At least give me a drink at the ordering window... or do traditional table side service? Idk something is just not right.

Yelp
We go here at least once every summer because the location is great. Let' me be clear - the oysters are great too but I could only give 3 stars because the ordering process is ridiculously bad. Over the years they have built permanent buildings and expanded the menu - all great things. The ordering process has always been bad and surprisingly it hasn't gotten better. You arrive and first find a table. You need to split your group because someone has to keep the table while someone else orders. The person ordering has to wait in line (25 minutes on Friday). To place your order and put your card on file. Last time they were out of menu items which required me to call back to those at the table and offer substitutes which only increased the time for those behind us. Checkout the Rexicana Surf Cantina in Marshfield if you need an example of a great self service system. Bottom line: good food, great location, terrible ordering experience.

Mark K.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place. Great outdoor setting, dog friendly, nice vibe. But... but... the star of the show, oysters, were really really small. Like you throw back a dozen and barely feel like you ate anything. The rest of the food is only so-so. Lots of cold food. I get it, but it was not cheap, and not tasty. Spent almost $180 for two people -- a couple beers, couple dozen oysters and some other food so we were not starved. For a place known as the best source for oysters, they should do better. (Note! The oysters I received were smaller than all the nice photos that others shared here on Yelp.) For the same or less -- go to Row 34 in Boston for oysters.

Yelp
I love this place. 1. Best oysters EVER... it helps that it is like from the sea fresh... and decent wine (not the world's best, but decent) 2. Speedy fast service. I think from order to table was like 2 min - max. 3. Ambiance. By the water with a view... Couldn't get any better! Okay there are two minor downsides you need to know about. 1. Because there is pear tree by the property, there are some wasps/bees buzzing around. 2. You better go when it opens (or within 15 min), because the parking lot gets packed pretty quickily

Yelp
Best oysters in Massachusetts. Now great outside garden with other food and drink choices

Yelp
I'll let you know my rating after I eat. Now that I'm done I can post that my wife visited Island Creek just as it open so we had a good look at the open and welcoming layout. Veiw if the water, dock and farm make for a delightful experience. The goal of our seeking out this somewhat hidden venue was a oyster safari, and it was a success had 12 Aunt Dottie that were wet & briny. Just as explained. Pricy but a great tasting experience.

Yelp
HELLO PARADISE OASIS. Damn geez YES. Shuck me good. I'm a huge fan of living that oyster life. Living in the north shore we made a day trip of trucking down here and experiencing the south shore way. Island creek oyster bar restaurants are my fav however they haven't re opened yet so why not take this amazing drive? Where do I begin??? I was blown away by the raw bar. I can't wait to come back when they start doing their farm tours since it seems like they run quite the operation. All staff was super friendly and chill considering these crazy times. Atmosphere super romantic hip groovy dreamy heavenly whatever. It's something for everyone. Loving the tree lights loving the ocean vibes. Can I get married here? You choose a table place your order at the truck and they bring it to you. OKAY. YAHHS. I can't wait to come back this place is the real deal. Bravo!

Tom H.

Yelp
Delivery was supersonic. Arrived early. Excellent product. I will be buying often.

Yelp
OMGoodness. Really? Great martini pre dinner. Then this for $14.00. Really? Great bar but don't pour a wine like that
google avatar

Kathie D.

Yelp
Whether you're a fan of oysters or not, the location is well worth it. The oysters are always delicious, the service is great and the views of the ocean are gorgeous.

Mike J.

Yelp
Best oysters on the South Shore. Stop by the shop and stock up. Oysters right out of Cape Cod Bay.

Bob O.

Yelp
Oysters were yummy but the surprise 10% admin fee was not. I am not sure if there was a sign up front that mentioned it so I cant blame them totally.

Yelp
It's way over due for a review. I have gone to Island Creek Oyster 2 times and both experiences were phenomenal..... If you're in the mood for fresh oysters you have to stop by this place. it's a very casual and they serve the oyster at a food truck I had calamari as a starter then I ordered all the live shellfish that they offered including the island Greek oysters, Aunt Dotty oysters, Row 34 oysters. Please support local businesses if you're in the area and get yourself a good seafood meal

Yelp
So much fun for an amazing Saturday afternoon. My friend and I ordered several dozen oysters and a few beers, and enjoyed them at the picnic table overlooking the ocean. The oysters were so fresh and absolutely delicious. I enjoyed sampling several types that were harvested locally. The outdoor eating area is perfect - a bar, food truck style setup, long picnic tables and Adirondack chairs, all overlooking the water. Pricing is a little expensive, but well worth it. When it got busier later in the afternoon, the wait was quite a while to receive our order, since all the oysters are shucked to order. But overall, it was a simply perfect afternoon here!

Just S.

Yelp
Just used them for a wedding and received a price for everything then got billed more after the day. Here's the explanation "The shucking service is always subject to change based on timing day of. So in this case it seems like the shuckers may have gotten stuck in traffic or spent a little more time at the set up or breakdown time that made their hours a little longer than I had originally projected in my initial estimate. So the product, set up fee, and mileage is fixed, but shucking service can change slightly after the event." Nothing in the original correspondence indicated anything was subject to change, Setup was $500, Shuckers $300. Won't use them again.

Yelp
Would it kill you to put up a sign or two? Totally confusing both on line and on site. If that's intentional, it's ridiculously pretentious. If not, it's inexcusably inept. Great oysters deserve better

M M.

Yelp
These oysters are sooooo small. Im surprised they are even legal. Briny yes, but way too small. Migets. I received them as a Thanksgiving gift and I am almost embarrassed to serve them. I don't like huge oysters, but again.....there is hardly any meat.

Yelp
This review is for ICO store, not the raw bar. We love this place and come here often to satisfy our oystery craving. Kevin, the store manager, is super friendly and greets us by names. We usually get 50+ oysters and 24-48 clams for two of us. They have ice packs available at no charge to keep your seafood fresh if you need to travel afar. They also have good champagne mignonette for sale which I highly recommend. When we get home, we start shucking oysters right away and most of it don't even make it to the plate as it gets devoured while shucking. We usually cooked the clams over charcoal grill or make soup with green onion and pepper. Parking is easy. Accepts all major credit cards. Not a restaurant so no seating or restroom available. Just pick your shellfish and take away kind of place! Make sure you have a good oyster shucking knife before getting your oyster. They have a few for sale at the store. I personally found OXO shucking knife to be the easiest and safest to use.

Susan G.

Yelp
Great location, facilities, lab, tour, food, staff, cleanliness and attention to detail. We had the best time learning, eating and touring. Will definitely be back again! A delight for the natural beauty of the cove and delicious oysters! Looking forward to their new clams and scallops.

Alex S.

Yelp
Great outdoor seating, perfect background music, dog friendly, kid friendly, and the food was good too! Get the otsters and get the john daly!

Yelp
I ordered the lobster special for my husband for Father's Day. On June 17th two days before it was scheduled to ship I found out our kids were getting Dad lobster too. I called And the lady said " no you can't cancel they're counted out" whatever that means. I know they're not on the dock ready to ship, and I know y'all could get on your computer and help me out but no. She could have offered to reschedule, ask my name, where I'm from. But no. I didn't get upset because I'm tired of having to lose my cool to get anywhere. I won't be back. Bless your hearts y'all. Happy Father's Day

Yelp
First time doing Oyster Delivery. I received my order less than 2 days and the Oysters were fresh and sweet. I would order from Island Creek again.

Rui A.

Yelp
The oysters are always fresh and delicious...next time I'll make a effort to try the rest of the menus.

Yelp
We ordered a large number of oysters, clams, scallops, and caviar to be shipped from Boston to California for our anniversary. There were a few hiccups but all were taken care of with excellent customer service. For example, we requested the shipment to be delivered on a Friday and they shipped everything 4 days too early. Their management team was great and agreed to re-ship all the seafood that wouldn't keep by Friday, free of charge. As for the food itself -- 5 stars! The oysters were some, if not the best, oysters I have ever had. The clams were fresh, the scallops were large and in charge, and the caviar was off-the-chart delicious. I was extremely impressed by the packaging of the food. The seafood was packed in a disposable cooler with a temperature reader inside. All the seafood arrived chilled and we received a text message when the package was delivered so the food wouldn't be left out too long. We will definitely order from them again.

Yelp
So second time ordering from ico. And it just gets better and better. Wanted the submarines originally but were sold out. Then ordered the mookie blues. But i guess mother nature killed that dream with something called a noreaster? Still got the beach plums and they are everything plus that i hoped for. Did get 100 of the regular ico oysters and they do not disappoint.

Yelp
I ordered 100 oysters, 100 clams, a couple of sauces and knives to open the shellfish for family in Johnstown, PA and they gave Island Creek 5 STARS. The shellfish arrived on time as ordered and they were literally as if they were plucked from the water and shipped immediately. VERY fresh, practically no grit or dirt and VERY delicious. Fantastic! Very very happy with the whole experience and we WILL be ordering again!! I'm thinking the 100 oysters and caviar next!! Thank you! :-)

Stuart S.

Yelp
Being able to order fresh oysters and other goodies online, for delivery in Georgia is a treat. I've probably placed 8 orders in the past 4 months. Each and everytime the seafood has arrived when scheduled, and the quality is superb. Today was the exception. I was expecting oysters and clams this evening. About 5 or so this evening I checked for a delivery update from Fedex and saw that the package had arrived in Memphis at 1 this morning, however no departure or estimated delivery was mentioned. Then I remembered that the horriffic ice storm that had hit Texas so badly was supposed to have moved East. It all made sense. About 2 minutes later I received what I'm sure was a mass email, from Cory in customer service appologizing for the delay. Shoot, I honestly don't remember ever receiving an email, on the day I expected a package, saying it would be late. Usually I've had to contact the seller, or shipping company asking for some help. Island Creek Oysters truly puts the extra effort into taking care of their customers Island Creek Oysters has truly exceeded my expectations. The oysters, frozen lobster meat and scallops we've order have been delicious. I did order the oyster shucking knife and "Yankee Shucker Oyster Clamp" has enabled this "rookie" to easily open up these gems. I heartily recommend the "oyster of the month club", each month the oysters from different oyster farms have been thoroughly delicious. About 2 weeks ago I baked some of the oysters with a little garlic butter and parmesan cheese. Please don't let the size of those oysters deceive you. I overcooked them a little and so they shrank. They tasted incredible and the next batch were bigger, but we ate them without taking another picture Cheers Stuart S.

Yelp
Good to get there right at 12 when they open, limited parking, first come first serve seating! Artifact cider pairs really well with the oysters.

Yelp
Best online Oysters ever. I love really fresh oysters, that is why Island Creek never disappoints. I ordered 50 Duxbury Oysters for yesterday and right on time were 50 of the most freshest oysters delivered to my home. Each oyster was cleaned of the Duxbury Mud by me and ready for shucking. Make sure that you have a able bodied person who has the strength to shuck 50 oysters or 120 depending what you order. Depending when you order is what Oysters are available. This week Saltwind Oysters from Scarborough Maine, Beach Plum from Weestport, Massachusetts or Sweet Neck Oysters from Marth's Vineyard, Wellfleet Oyster from Wellfleeet, Massachusetts to mention a few. Island Creek offers oysters, caviar and apparel. Free overnight shipping. I had them last night, but I am ready to order more, they are that good. Their online site offers tutorials how to shuck, caviar 101 and of course oysters 101. I highly recommend.

Yelp
Big thumbs up. I am a new customer for the take out operation, and I will be back... I discovered Island Creek Oysters' operation based on a recent Boston Globe article (third week of November, 2020). The article was talking about how local oyster fishermen/ farmers were dealing with low prices for product. And, this is because (according to article), 75% of all oysters are consumed at restaurants (in normal times). With so many closures of restaurants, demand is down. But the article hinted that you could buy oysters direct from some providers. A quick google search identified Island Creek oysters in Duxbury. While it seemed that they have a biz in shipping oysters overnight, there was also an option to buy and pick up (alive) from their store. We live about 40 miles away, but this still sounded interesting.... We love oysters. I had never shucked an oyster... But after looking at the website (and many other youtube videos), I decided that I could probably do it. And, was shocked to learn that if the oysters have air, they can last for a week in the fridge. So, we took the plunge. Ordered a bag of 50 Island Creek oysters. Did the drive. And, just two of us at home! We are incredibly happy with our purchase. It turns out that shucking oysters is not as hard as I thought... (although we continue to improve in our technique), and these oysters were delicious. Just as good as any restaurant where we have had them, and to be able to open just as many as you want is great. For Thanksgiving (where we will be a group of four, my wife and I and two of our adult kids) we will have turkey. But we will also be shucking and eating a portion of the NEW order of 100 oysters that we just picked up today. The rest we will finish later. Island Creek will be in our arsenal for future events. What might be more fun than having an oyster party, with shucking lessons, for an amenable group? So... if you are in the market for unshucked oysters, I would strongly recommend these guys and their product. We will be ongoing customers.

Geoff F.

Yelp
The freshest oysters you will get outside of pulling one out of the water while on a boat. Team here rocks!
google avatar

Kevin C.

Yelp
Oysters are sometimes ok...but my last two shipments were not promptly delivered. Their website indicates that customer service is available M-F, 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM EST but this appears not to be the case. Can someone rewind the weekend and find my oysters?
google avatar

Norman R.

Yelp
This is the oyster farm for the Island Creek Oysters company. They have a food truck where they sell their oysters too. They have a bunch of picnic tables. You pick a table then you go place your order, tell them your table number. In a few minutes, they bring your oysters all shucked on a tray of ice. Great tasty oysters, fresh and delicious!!! Great outdoor atmosphere that's about 100' from the ocean.

Yelp
What a cool spot! Arriving, we were not sure what to expect as the raw bar is down behind a parking lot. However once we found our way, it was awesome. Beautiful view on the water! Nice beers and beverage options and the freshest oysters ever! Really great service!

Yelp
It's amazing fresh the oysters.I ordered 100 count Island Creek oysters for a family party during Labor Day. Definitely worth the long drive. Will be back for more.

Bought local oysters last weekend frwsh, baby crabs in almost every oyster!!! Fresh locally! Was told these would be fresh! Spend your money locally!! Don't recommend island creek oyster.....
