Island Lobster Company - Review - Peaks Island - Portland, ME - The Infatuation

"Imagine the storybook version of coastal Maine: rocky beaches, bikes with big wooden baskets, and talking lobsters with adorably thick Mainer accents. Apart from the English-speaking crustaceans, this is Peaks Island - a small island three miles off Portland’s coast. It’s one of our favorite places to visit, and it’s only reachable by ferry (runs every hour and costs around $8 roundtrip). Once you get there, rent a bike, explore the beaches and vacation houses, and eat a required lobster roll at Island Lobster Company. It doesn’t matter how many you’ve already eaten on this trip, this one will taste special just because of where you are." - Hannah Albertine

I was happy as a clam here. We ate at lunch time, so the lobster rolls were very popular. From what I could tell I was the only person to order a full lobster and a pound of clams. But I can tell you they were excellent and fresh. My wife had a fried scallop roll + salad and was happy. This place had a good system for service. 1) Get your table, up or downstairs. 2) Order Food and get your table marker 3) Order drinks at the bar We actually returned to get another round of beers after walking to enjoy the view back towards Portland, waiting for the ferry.

Google
We really enjoyed this place. There is a big covered patio with a great view, and the food options are all solid. Pricing is also decent considering you are on a small island where everything comes via ferry, and there aren't a ton of competitors. The "kids' meals" are decent portions, reasonably priced, you can order them at any age. I did spring for the whole lobster one day, and I wasn't disappointed. We cooked most of our meals at our rental cottage, but groceries on the island are expensive, so we didn't feel bad about splurging for a few meals out here. We will definitely be back on future trips.

Google
Sitting on the deck overlooking the water was a great way to enjoy lunch. After sightseeing the island and walking around it was nice to sit in the shade and relax. The fried haddock burger was one of better that I've had. And the peaks burger was just a normal everyday burger. The onion rings were very good, but we might have just been very hungry. The whoopie pie was ok, just needed a little dessert

Google
Was looking for something original but, fell short. We had Lobster Bisque and were told had Lobster chunks in it. No Lobster meat at all. Tasted like Lobster flavored cheese soup. Lobster roll very basic and not memorable. Over priced for the quality we got.

Google
Fun. Perfect location. Great view. Food and Beverage Managers were funny, witty, kind, and very eager to help. Such a nice vibe. The haddock burger was GREAT. The lobster roll was EXQUISITE! 5 Stars across the board. GET OVER HERE!!!

Google
Took the ferry from Portland and immediately knew I needed to have lunch here. The menu and view were better than everywhere else on the island. It’s counter service and then grab a table. Despite a decent size line it moved quick. We ordered steamed clams, lobster Caesar and lobster BLT. All were excellent! I hope I can stop by again sometime.

Beautiful place. Great staff. Good beers and good food

Google
Great views and great food! Really ready to order - walk in the door and order from the server to the left (menu on the wall to the right). Take a number and seat yourself anywhere. Food is brought out pretty fast! Views on the back patio porch were beautiful! Food was expensive but worth every bite!

Shayne C.

Yelp
Wonderful view of the bay! Cute place! If you like typical fish and chips - fried cousine - this place is great! Not much on the healthy option side of things.

Yelp
Having company in for a cpl weeks ILCO sustained us more than a few times. The wings were surprisingly amazing!! Fish sandwich, steamers, onion rings, slaw...So much more everything was on point and not one thing id say 'don't try'. Great job this summer, ILCO!

Yelp
The views here are really nice and only a short walk from the ferry stop. They have outside seating at picnic tables and seating inside. We only stopped for a drink and to enjoy the view, which we did.

Yelp
Good drinks, great view. The perfect place to wait for the ferry. Didn't eat here so can't comment on the food

Yelp
Food was good portion and fast. Bar service was excellent. Great cocktails and very friendly gal from Mass working. Amazing view amazing time all around.

Yelp
Decided to visit the infamous Peaks Island and what an amazing experience! We got bikes from Mikes Rentals and drove around the whole island in less than 2hours. We made several stops to sight see and take beautiful photos. We stopped to get a drink and quick bite at Island Lobster because their view and drinks and food were highly recommended. It did not disappoint! We ordered a blueberry margarita and coconut mojito and they were made very strong but delicious! We ordered a side of calamari which definitely were delicious to munch on! The service the whole time was very friendly and very helpful! We loved every minute of it. We stayed here to rest until our ferry came back to pick us up. 10/10 experience

Yelp
Stopped here while visiting Peaks Island because it seemed to be the only place to sit down and have a meal. It was counter service, and the service was nice. However we wished we passed on this meal. It was $56 for 2 meals and it was nothing special. The views were nice out on the patio.

Yelp
The best whole lobster I've ever had. They pull it directly from the bay out front and directly in to "bake" aka steam. Warm and friendly staff, great food (also had steamer clams) and an unbeatable view. From what I heard, this is a small husband and wife company who quit their day jobs to pursue their dreams. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Sat on the downstairs lawn... great water view with a beer. Amazing Lobster roll was delicious, extra crispy fries.

Yelp
This was good! Hard to beat the views and vibes, and the food is also perfectly serviceable for your post or pre-ferry seafood needs. Was it the best chowder or lobster I had on the trip to ME? Not necessarily. Was it SO much fun to take in the views and drink a rum bucket with my friends on the water? Yes! The setup is goofy but they do make the process somewhat clear as you walk in. You can order drinks from the upstairs or downstairs bar, and food is ordered at the window upstairs. We went with the chowder, clams, and a pound and a half of lobster. Devoured everything without issue, and let it be known that you will leave this place MESSY if you're doing it right. Overall a great pick for lunch or a sunset if you're on Peaks Island. Would return for the views alone!

Yelp
Food came out looked delicious Lobster roll was good Fried clams were either frozen or cooked to death French fries were not cooked Salad delicious but cheap dressing ruined it No one ever checked back on us once food was dropped off $113 for this Sucked

Yelp
Island Lobster is a Five Star view, but don't come here expecting great food. There's still a lot to like... -The ocean view is stunning. You won't find better. -There are two bars, and the downstairs bar is usually mostly empty. Drink prices are elevated, but not egregious. -The fried food is mostly fine. Stick to that, or maybe steamers, and you'll have a solid experience. The not so good? -Worst lobster roll in Portland. You can't call yourself "Island Lobster Company" and be this bad. The bread to lobster ratio is probably 80%-20%. You're basically just eating bland bread. The lobster is tasteless too, and it's very unsatisfying for $29. I'd say at least it comes with fries, but they're limp and nearly inedible. The onion rings are much better, so maybe you can sub them in (but maybe not). -It's a weird setup. You order food at a counter, and there's often a line. Then you have to wait in another line to order drinks at the bar. I feel like there must be a better system? Why can't you just order food on an app? The Peaks Island dining scene is not award winning, so keep your expectations in check. Island Lobster would be a great spot to split some fried food, order a drink and take in the gorgeous scenery. I'd just avoid the island lobster.

Yelp
Awesome spot to escape some of the heat and wait for the ferry with a drink! We sat at the bar and waited for our food. We tried the lobster bisque which was good but no lobster chunks, and the buffalo chicken Caesar wrap which was fantastic. Fries served alongside were ok! The food did take about 30 minutes to come out so just factor this in while waiting for the ferry. The bar staff was nice and drinks came out quick- the rum bucket was a hit and so was the strawberry rhubarb marg. Aperol spritz was pretty lame but all other drinks were nice. Bathroom situation is hectic since a public bathroom on peaks is a hot commodity. Bathroom door locks don't work too well so you may be walked in on. Seating gets cut throat at busy times!

Yelp
Perfect place to grab a meal on Peak's Island. We got the Captain's Platter which includes a selection of fresh shrimp, scallops, clams, and haddock on a bed of fries. Like most of the seafood in Portland, the meals are fresh and the breading makes the differences. Crunchy and lightly-breaded, the platter was perfect to share. Would highly recommend for someone looking to hangout on Peak's Island. A lot of seating, but busy if you go in the summer.

Yelp
Second time coming here. Had a racist interaction with a woman. I notified the restaurant about it but they did nothing about it. It was very disappointing as it was my birthday. I will never be coming back here.

Caroline O.

Yelp
Great lunch! Received our food quickly and was able to snag a table outside. All fried foods are gluten free, which I really appreciated as a person whose tummy is very anti-gluten. Probably best to plan to visit after the rush (2pm ish). Would recommend.

Yelp
We chose not to get food based on the reviews, but went ahead and got cocktails and sat on the deck. The view was nice and the service was quick, but we paid $26 plus tip for 2 below average cocktails. The Bloody Mary almost exclusively tasted like horseradish, and the coconut mojito didn't actually have any mint, it was just poured from a premixed container. Not worth our $.

Yelp
My wife and I were on a Maine road trip from Portland to Bar Harbor and back and we took a little boat ride to Peaks Island. My wife and I took the 4 mile walk around the island and I was HOT! I usually get a beer whenever I have a meal, but all I wanted was some cold water. They had lots of it available, and I drank a lot of it. I ordered a lobster roll at the counter and it was brought out to our table overlooking the water on the outside patio. The bun was good and the lobster roll wasn't the best we had on the trip, but it was solid enough. They did have quite a crowd of tourists attending. It is one of only a few places to eat on the island and definitely worth a try.

Yelp
A great lunch spot on Peaks Island while waiting for the ferry back to Portland. We had a couple of beers and some chowder! The outdoor deck with the bay view was spectacular!

Yelp
Nice location near the ferry (and any other business) on Peaks Island. Sat on the deck that features a great view of the water. Lobster roll was average but good ambiance and prompt, friendly service.
google avatar

Lim K.

Yelp
My husband and I visited the Peaks Island recently on our first visit to Portland. There aren't much to do there for us so it was a short visit. We stopped here for lunch before heading back to downtown. We shared steamed clams, fried clams, and a garden salad. Both steamed and fried clams were good. My favorite clams are fresh little neck clams but since we are in Portland we wanted to try all of them.
google avatar

Yelp
Outstanding Location, Vibe, Food & Drinks !!!!!! Owner & Staff are Top Notch !!!!! Fyi.......The best Sunsets on the Patio FOR SURE !!!!@×

Anna K.

Yelp
Walked in to get some soup to go on a Thursday evening. Apparently you can only get served if you want alcohol, as the actual kitchen closes over a half hour before the restaurant does. Not worth the walk. If your kitchen closes early, it NEEDS TO BE LISTED ON THE WEBSITE.

Yelp
Of the two lobster rolls we had while in Maine, both of which were in the Portland area, this place was better. Other folks we heard from recommended "Bite Into Maine" yet we both preferred the taste of the Island Lobster Company ones. Service was pleasant at first, but then turned a bit harsh and told we couldn't eat outside. It wasn't communicated in a pleasant tone and was a bit matter-a-fact. Given that they make 95% of their income off tourist, I'd expect them to treat their guest more pleasant. Again, this place was better than the other we tried.
google avatar

Todd R.

Yelp
We stopped here for lunch while on a Saturday day trip to Peaks Island. We arrived shortly after it opened and had no problem getting a table outside on the deck with great views. Food is ordered at the counter and you are given a numbered lobster buoy (cute touch) to place on your table so the server can find you. The food arrived at our table lightning fast and was very good. The menu offerings are pretty standard fare for a seasonal restaurant in Maine..... lots of "pub like" seafood offerings. ... but were well executed and reasonably priced. When we left, the line was out the door so I would recommend arriving early.

Tatiana T.

Yelp
Great food and nice outdoor environment that allows dogs. Rum bucket was fun! Clam chowder was better than the lobster bisque.
google avatar

Paul M.

Yelp
This is a good tourist attraction on the island and one of the only places to get seafood. The prices were expensive and the food not as tasty as they could have been. The soups were not very tasty and I had much better lobster bisque soup and more flavorful clam chowder. I would stick to the sandwiches. The fried clams were good. It everything was in disposable paper dishes and fast food but their prices were like going to a fancy restaurant. Nevertheless if you want seafood and a great view this is the place to go to on Peaks Island.
google avatar

Kenny K.

Yelp
Really enjoyed this spot! We spent and afternoon riding around the island in golf carts and stopped in for a quick drink and some food. We ended up getting a plate that pretty much everything (haddock, shrimp, clams, and scallops), I think it was called the Captain's Platter. It was perfect for two or maybe even three folks. The staff was fun and they definitely like to cut up with you. They also have some outdoor seating by the water if that's your thing, if not then why are you really there? I don't remember if they have indoor seating, but you won't need it.

Yelp
This may have been the very best piece of fried fish (hake) I have ever had AND IT WAS ON PEAKS ISLAND AT THE ISLAND LOBSTER COMPANY!!!! First of all, the serving was out of control - that piece of fish was at LEAST as big as 3 hands. It was huge. When I first saw it, I thought that I would never be able to finish it all. But then I tasted it - and all was lost because it was so damn good. The breading was light and crispy without even a hint of grease or oil. It crunched when I bit into it (which almost never happens with other fried fish unless the breading is so thick and heavy that it's all you taste). But here - at the Island Lobster Company - the breading is a light, perfectly seasoned accompaniment to the star which, for me, was the delicious hake filet in front of me! Now - the fish - so pure, so fresh, so well cooked - I was in heaven. Moist and tasty and delicious! And huge! Island Lobster Company is clearly the best restaurant on Peaks Island in my humble opinion. The good stuff here is all fried - fish, scallops, shrimp, clams, etc - but surprisingly there is a lot of non-seafood available too. Like lobster! Steamed lobster, lobster rolls, lobster BLT - and on and on. Okay - they also have fried chicken, hamburgers and stuff like that I will try at one of my future visits OF WHICH THERE WILL BE MANY!!! Island Lobster Company even has a veggie offering but, really, just leave the vegetarian at home, okay? The fries were plentiful, too plentiful to eat all of them although I certainly wanted to. Mine were on the salty side so that is something to watch. But the star of the meal and this review is the fish, the fish and nothing but the fish. I will start this review as I began it - THIS MAY HAVE BEEN THE VERY BEST PIECE OF FRIED FISH I HAVE EVER HAD!!! And it was at the Island Lobster Company! They are masters at seafood! I highly recommend this restaurant to one and all!

Yelp
Ambiance is nice. Right by the ferry, pick your own table and order at the front. Overlooking the beach and grassy hill. You can walk down to the bar downstairs and play cornhole afterwards. But plain and simple the food was expensive and gross. One of the priciest crab rolls we had in Maine and it was inedible. The lobster egg rolls were soggy, greasy messes that didn't even have visible lobster in them. Threw away most of and grabbed a drink downstairs. Waste of money.
google avatar

Christy K.

Yelp
The location is fantastic--you overlook Casco Bay when seated outdoors, but the restaurant is very, very crowded. My husband and I waited much longer tho we would expect at a place like this. This may, however, be the result of our timing--we went at lunch right after a cruise ship arrived and the day of the Raggae Festival. My $20 lobster roll tasted okay, but my onion rings were cold. My husband's chicken sandwich with fries were tasty and the right temperature. I would choose another restaurant for lunch in the future, especially if the line is long.
google avatar

Bryan M.

Yelp
We heard about the 'new' restaurant on the island whilst waiting for the golf cart to cruise around peaks; ILC did not disappoint! Fresh seafood caught that day, so tender and delicious. I ordered a lobster roll and my mother had a crab roll, à la carte fries; we shared an appetiser of calamari as well. Everything we ate was so fresh and prepared perfectly. The fries and calamari were crisp and not overly greasy. For $20, the lobster roll had a heaping portion of meat and the dressing was not overbearing, the lobster flavour came through on every bite. Peaks island has a new gem and hope all goes well for the establishment.
google avatar

Connie T.

Yelp
Would.of gave this five stars but the bartender was not on point! I had to ask for a drink I wasr ever given the option to run a tap as I am.seeing everyone else is. I am sitting right in front and I am the only one that has to ask for a refill. I understand busy times but really. I can see the rest of the staff are working it and acknowledging all. I should of sat at a.table to get quality service.. especially for a $9.00 beer.!
google avatar

Yelp
A great spot for lunch while on Peaks island! The place itself is like a shack where you order the food as soon as you come in and then order drinks at the bar next to the cashier. In the back there is a seating area with large long tables & benches. The lobster BLT was like comfort food heaven. The bun was very buttery, the bacon was crispy and the lobster was soft and plentiful. The fries were not as crispy as I would have liked but still delicious. The fried calamari was good, the fried pieces fell off very easily The scallop roll was literally fried scallops in a roll bun, deliciously oily I gave it 3 stars because we were one of the first few customers to order when they opened and our order took over an hour to come out. The food also came out kinda cold... maybe it was a busier day for them than expected? Overall, I would come back and give this place another try, especially when you want to just hang out with drinks and fried food

Nicole E.

Yelp
Such an awesome spot!! The view was gorgeous! It's a seat yourself place then you go to a window to place your order and they give you a table number and bring you your food. The lobster roll was tasty and the side salad was amazing for a side salad! The crab roll was good just not as flavorful. The onion rings were good too. The clam chowder and lobster bisque were very very yummy. Cool place and nice people.
google avatar

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
The layout and seating limitations are undesirable. The upper deck is one of the largest spaces available, and the one that has the best view. It has some picnic table seating but they are spaced far apart so the room doesn't fit as many people as it easily could. The lower deck would be a fantastic option but they put up a big white tent on the grass that completely blocks the waterfront view from thus level. We decided to sit on the grass under the tent, but we're disappointed that the angle was so low that we couldn't enjoy being on the water and there were lots of bugs in the grass that kept biting her ankles. Quickly finished our drink and moved on without ordering any food.
google avatar

Kaitie F.

Yelp
The only positive I can contribute here is the view from the deck unfortunately. We were excited to try this restaurant during a day trip to Peak's Island last week. We ordered a fried clam basket and 2 hot dogs. The clams and fries had absolutely no flavor or seasoning and tasted like old grease. The hot dog was kool aid red and boiled, lacking any texture or flavor. Prices were extremely high for very underwhelming and disappointing food. Cocktails had the opposite issue, with a puckering amount of sour mixture overwhelming the drinks.
google avatar

K M.

Yelp
So we followed the tourists to Peaks and into Island Lobster Co. Great views , lobster rolls were good but missing the key ingredient, Lobster! so more like lettuce roles sprinkled with some small amount of lobster.

Bill S.

Yelp
Wanted to love it, just liked it. PRO: the lobster meat in our lobster roll was fresh and reasonably generous portion. Calamari and fried clams portions also reasonably generous portions. Service was prompt and genuine. Nice view of sunset over Portland. CON: lobster roll bun was slightly stale, brown butter was nearly nonexistent. Calamari was over cooked. Nothing terribly wrong, just won't be in a hurry to return. Ambiance/view from covered deck is the most redeeming feature.

Nora C.

Yelp
ISLAND LOBSTER COMPANY GAVE MY SON ECOLI!!!!!! HE HAD TO GET HIS STOMACH PUMPED AFTER EATING HERE!! The service was absolutely awful, some teen snob took my order and got it wrong!! The ambiance and view is the only redeeming factor to this place. The people serving food didn't check in on him, and he ended up getting sick in the ferry terminal an hour later!!!!!
google avatar

Hannah H.

Yelp
We visited here after taking a ferry over to the island and picked the place after reading the reviews. The food did not disappoint- everything we had was delicious and I loved how the water was self serve refills because everyone is super thirsty after a day in the sun!
google avatar

Lindsey D.

Yelp
I enjoyed the lobster roll and my boyfriend enjoyed the fish sandwich. They have gluten free lobster rolls here but the roll did fall apart. Very cute scene, pretty expensive
google avatar

Michele D.

Yelp
Located at Peaks Island, this is a great spot to sit and enjoy the views. The line can be long to order but worth the wait and goes fast depending on your order. Our group got the Lobster Roll - surprise right?! If you're in Maine, that's what you get It was delicious- it was expensive but delicious. For 2 people our order for lunch was $86 and change. 2 lobster rolls and 2 bottles waters ($3.50 each). Their lobster roll was stuffed with lump meat and no seasoning other than a drizzle of butter - perfect for our taste. The "roll" wasn't as toasted as I would've liked, and lacked flavor. Overall, it was satisfying. If I went again, I'd be sure to ask them to grill the roll or toast it more. The reason for the 4 stars snd not 5 is only because we had lobster rolls from another place in OOB and it was definitely tastier. (Roll was grilled with butter and light garlic which went beautifully with the sweet lobster taste)
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
Beautiful views, great service and DELICIOUS lobster rolls! Also, you have to try the Blueberry lemonade cocktail - it is like a sip of summer in Maine!

Felix R.

Yelp
Just got back from "dinner," such as it was. Here we are in Maine in summer, at a place that calls itself a lobster company. So we ordered the most classic choice (not that they have a lot of choices): steamed lobster. Fine. We take our seats; a few minutes later the kid comes to our table and says, oh we don't have that. All the lobsters went to "a private party." What? Ridiculous; this place should be ashamed. So we had to settle for lobster rolls, not what I want for dinner. But supposedly hot. They show up; they are cold with warm butter. All of this would be forgivable except for one thing: the lobster in the rolls was NOT FRESH. It had obviously been previously frozen. Like you could get--maybe better--in Nebraska. The view from the deck is wonderful; but don't count on these people for any kind of food. Drink their beer and go home. (Good luck; there is nowhere else decent to eat on this island.)
google avatar

Bo K.

Yelp
Fried clams are a must! Steamed lobster was also delicious... nothing special but if you want a classic steamed lobster with butter, this is the place! Skip clam cake... not worth it.
google avatar

Eric S.

Yelp
We had some fam visiting and took them out to Peaks. We've been numerous times over the years but had never tried Island Lobster Company. Located on a hill overlooking Portland and the water, it takes advantage of that view with double level decks and a large tent further down the hill with more seating. We stopped in for beers and some onion rings and were able to bring our little dog with us by going to the second level down deck (can't sit upstairs deck or inside with the pup fyi) which had nice shade and comfortable chairs. Beer selection had some nice local craft beer options on draft and can pours and we ordered from the second level bar which had obviously been redone really nicely recently and the bartender was super nice. Food came out fairly fast after ordering upstairs at the kiosk to your left as you walk in- they didn't blow my mind flavor wise, but I'll go back for sure just for the chill atmosphere overlooking the water!
google avatar

Kyle A.

Yelp
Really downgraded here. The look is nice and fresh but the quality of the experience is much much lower now. Much fewer options for people who can't have seafood (considering there are only 3-4 places to eat here, that's a big deal). Plus the prices now match that of Portland so it's far less affordable. With the family style, order at a counter and seat yourself at a picnic table, it's far less desirable of a place to eat. The view is still gorgeous but it's really not worth it now. Really disappointed and will not be back until it takes new ownership again.
google avatar

Matt S.

Yelp
The business did not update its Google business page, and so we took the ferry over to the island to find it closed. Also, the Yelp page shows that it is opening soon, but it is not.
