Michelin Guide 2020: Scotland Celebrates Two New Stars!

"Set within an impressive baronial mansion on a 300-acre private island on Scotland’s west coast, this hotel restaurant serves dinner nightly (booking essential, though non-residents are welcome) and begins the evening with canapés by an open fire before seating guests in a formal dining room with well-spaced tables and garden views. The contemporary style contrasts pleasingly with original features, while the luxury hotel also offers a spa, golf course, and sweeping views of Loch Linnhe and the Morvern Mountains. Revitalised by new owners and Head Chef Graeme Cheevers—who arrived in late 2018 after eight years as executive chef at Michelin-starred Martin Wishart at Cameron House on Loch Lomond—the kitchen celebrates Scotland’s larder, from Isle of Mull scallops to Black Angus beef and Ayrshire lamb, and a celebrated cheese trolley rich in local selections. Natural flavours are paramount, brought together in well-balanced, harmonious combinations across highly seasonal yet understated dishes. Dishes enjoyed by the Michelin Inspectors over the past year included Loch Fyne crab with Granny Smith apple, smoked haddock jelly and seaweed butter; saddle of Argyll roe deer with baked celeriac, spelt and green pepper sauce; and vanilla millefeuille with blackcurrant and Knockraich crème fraîche sorbet; from the canapés through to the petit fours, the quality of the cooking shines. Newly awarded One Star in the Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland 2020." - The MICHELIN Guide UK Editorial Team

Isle Of Eriska (Oban, UK) Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Most often when you talk about a private island hotel you’re talking about Tahiti or the Caribbean, not the western coast of Scotland. But then the Isle of Eriska isn’t your typical hotel. For one thing, there’s a bit of golf here, but not in a contemporary “golf resort” kind of way — here there are just nine holes, so you’re playing for love of the game more than anything else." - Tablet Hotels

This is an absolutely amazing place. We loved it! The people working there are super friendly and helpful. The room we stayed in was great, so were all the little spots with fire places where we could have a good glass of wine. We had a 3 course dinner in the restaurant and this was very high quality, well prepared food. I would totally recommend the Eriska hotel and we hope to be back sometime. There is always room for improvement at any place, but don't let the less good reviews (with a lot of first world problems) put you off (as they almost did for me). This is a wonderful place.

Hard to know how to review this overall. The lodging side (room, service, location) was spectacular. But the dining was a very mixed bag, and what was to be our highlight meal in the main dining room was an utter disappointment. For 85GBP/person the meal should have been spectacular. It was anything but. There are countless fine dining options in Scotland and this place simply hasn't kept up. While it had the trappings of fine dining in terms of presentation (and price) the flavors were bland and uninspired, especially given the extremely high price point. On top of that, the service was not very good either. It was adequate but nothing special. For instance, this was a special occasion dinner for us, and the hotel knew that, but there was no mention of that in any way. The server didn't know whose dish was whose. And so on. ||Spend the money to stay here, but skip the main dining room and have a far better dinner in Oban for a fraction of the price.

Absolutely top hotel. We enjoyed it from start to finish. This hotel more than exceeded our (high) expectations. The welcome, friendliness, and helpfulness of the staff were a wonderful experience. Our lodge ("Rowan") was equipped with every comfort and decorated in true British (Scottish) style, perfectly matching the decor of the main building. The food was high quality, both breakfast and dinner. This hotel is a true discovery, and we will definitely return.

A beautiful hotel in a peaceful location. The rooms were very comfortable, warm and spacious. The food was delicious and service attentive. Full use of the spa is included and a relaxing space. I had the best spa treatment experience ( the Rejuvenating BNA Massage with LED facial) with Miha who was incredible.

The Isle of Eriska Hotel is amazing. The building, situated on it's own island, is beautiful and the extensive grounds are fabulous. The rooms are beautifully appointed, and he bar and sitting rooms are lovely. Great bartender with an extensive knowledge of Scotch! And the food was fantastic. First class all the way. We only wish we could have stayed longer. Highly recommended!

We stayed in Hilltop Hideway No3. Absolutely loved it. Peaceful and so cosy with amazing views. Fab bathroom, well equipped kitchen, comfy sofas and lovely hot tub! We saw a red squirrel which was a lovely bonus. We stayed 6 nights and will return next year!

Stunning hotel and island! We stayed for 2 nights in August 2025 as part of our honeymoon. When we booked this hotel, we checked if they were dog friendly, to which they said they were, however on arrival it felt very much like dogs were not particularly welcome. We were strongly encouraged to leave our dog in the room, which I was not comfortable with, nor did I want to do as we brought her with us for a reason - to enjoy together! They’re not allowed in most of the rooms within the hotel and we were only able to dine in the conservatory, which was fine, however we were not able to chose any other food other than the 6 course meal option, which was particularly expensive. We then opted to go to the local town of Oban on our 2nd night so we could eat something different. This was disappointing given the price of the stay, it also didn’t seem to make a great deal of sense as it should not matter which food you eat so long as you’re separate from other guests who may not like having a dog around. Overall I feel Eriska should have a no dog policy all together as their current policy doesn’t actually make sense when read. It makes it rather uncomfortable when you arrive to be rather discouraged from being in any of the hotel rooms. ||This being said, the island and scenery was phenomenal! We saw owls, deer, Highland cows, horses, toads etc! The night sky was like nothing I’ve ever seen before, crystal clear and beautiful stars! Stunning walks and fantastic culinary experience. We walked the whole island which was brilliant. I would come back here, however if you’re thinking of bringing your dog along, I’d possibly reconsider or ensure you have a table reserved if you’d like your dog to dine with you.

Last time we were here it was a birthday celebration just the 2 of us. This time we return with our 2 children in tow and we are so happy we did. The owners have certainly invested since we were last here in 2019 and it shows. We stayed in a 2 bedroom cottage with hot tub this time and it was just as wonderful and private as the Hilltop we had last time. We spent a days exploring the island, animals and swimming in the pool. Mum even managed to have a facial by the lovely Nic. We ate in The Deck, serving small plates. My children can vouch for the mini burgers. Thank you to all the helpful and patient staff, they really went out their way with the kids!

Yelp
The Isle of Eriska Hotel has been named Scotland's "most romantic spa break". This is a beautiful and remote hotel - you get to stay in an old manor home - the grounds are gorgeous and the customer service is very attentive. This is definitely a recommend

Yelp
Heartbroken. *lengthy review, as per email request to put grievances in order for "eligible" refund* I will update the hotel response when the correct person of authority finds it within this time frame to speak to me directly. We were here for maybe two hours tops then left. We came here for our honeymoon, we've been planning this trip since December. They are SO expensive, and being as my husband and I both are hotel bartenders in Dallas, our standards are high. It's absolutely nothing like the pictures provided, we feel like we were completely catfished, it's falsely advertised. We traveled for 2 days to be here, they charged 40 & 50 pounds for grocery store wine that costs 7 and 13 pounds. The building is old, things are falling apart and the repairs at the hot tub were slapped together with a caulk gun. There are "fire exits" which are other hallways throughout the hotel that are filled with miscellaneous trash and food aprons, I accidentally caught some employees sitting down on the stairs on their phones, these staircases looked like they hadn't been cleaned in years. The sauna and steam room were out of order, which is half of the spa amenities advertised on the website. When we returned to our room there was already a man inside our room trying to "change our bedding" why? We had just put our bags down! We packed up, and went back downstairs. This mysterious Gm had already left and I spoke to the receptionist employee who offered an upgraded room and a complimentary bottle of champagne which I can only imagine costs 10 pounds at the store plus a headache) but as I had explained this is not what we signed up for and we left. Someone called us to apologize and I asked for a refund and he said I will do that for you, I'll call you tomorrow I said thank you and checked into a different (better) hotel "No.17" which I'll address later. But upon the next day not only did I not get this phone call but I get a message through Expedia which he was arguing with me, from what an I had complained about to the receptionist, so we were playing 3rd party telephone, unwilling to speak to me directly. Whilst I was expressing my decision to leave the hotel based off of the amount of money it had cost versus the realistic advertised to an employee, I get an email within seconds stating that they would charge me fully due to "customer quality assurance" and that we left due to personal reasons. Part 2- I get a reply email through Expedia right after we hang up that says we've decided to charge you anyways, (I had paid 500, and they charged me another 700, right after they got my complaint to make sure they got their money) I called the receptionist again who claimed to be unaware of these emails, and told me to come in tomorrow (4.15.24) and to talk to the Gm at 11am which this person is supposed to be present, and again I got a written email from this Gm through Expedia, which said in summary, don't do that, put it in writing. Which is absolutely what I'm doing, on my honeymoon, instead of enjoying it. Will update review upon response Update* 4.26 They stopped answering my phone calls but answered when I called from my husband's phone. They are unwilling to get into contact with me and so I am disputing the charges through my bank.

Yelp
Prior to the 5 tier lockdown restrictions coming into place in Scotland, we managed to escape and enjoy a 2-night getaway to Glencoe, which is approximately 30 miles north of the hotel. As soon as we drove through the island gates, we could tell we were arriving somewhere special, and although we knew the hotel was situated on its own island, we didn't actually think about the small bridge we would have to drive over to get there (this did terrify us a little!). Thankfully, we made it in time for our 6pm reservation which meant we could enjoy some welcome drinks along with some canapes on the front lawn in the sunshine, before being seated for our meal at 6.30pm. The menu itself is a 3 course set menu with 4 options to choose from for each course. We each decided to get something different so that we could taste and judge each other's food choices. However, one dish that really caught our attention was the Lobster special. Neither of us had ever tried lobster before (and where better to try than at a Michelin Starred restaurant?) but neither of us wanted to give up our starter choice either... After much deliberation, our waitress came to the rescue and suggested we upgraded our meal and add this dish as its own course to share! It was devine! All of the dishes were plated beautifully and tasted absolutely stunning - one of our favourites was the Apple Tart Tatin (apparently also a huge hit with the hotel residents - it never gets removed off the menu!). If you're visiting this corner of the world - it's certainly worth the travel for such a treat! For our full review, please visit our blog https://www.sandlblog.com/post/staycation-isle-of-eriska

Yelp
Don't waste your money or time coming to this place. For one, if the "Michelin" star hotel is "booked up" you're stuck with THE ONLY one other option which is a disgrace of a restaurant. What is even more disgraceful is that the concierge assured us that it is the "same team" of chefs cooking at both. If that's the case, that Michelin star needs to be promptly removed. I won't bore you with the details about moldy cottages (see images) or the horrible food. If I were to sum it all up, this place is run by people who do not have any passion for the hospitality business or some foreign investor who thinks he/she knows better than the local managers are telling them. Either way, this was the worst place we stayed in during our stay in Scotland. It was also the most expensive and the most difficult to get to.

Yelp
We stayed at the Isle of Eriska hotel on September 4th-6th. My wife and I were taking a tour of Scotland with our son on the way to drop him off for college at St. Andrews. Although the accommodations were very nice we were very disappointed with our dinner. We ordered the tasting menu for the 3 of us. We did not find any of the courses very good. The cod was bland and we had better langoustine in pubs. The service was the worst part. We sometimes had to wait approximately 1/2 hour between courses to be waited on and during a 9 course meal this was quite irritating. It seemed the waitstaff had no clue about what they were doing. Sometimes they would stand 5 feet from our table and were obviously discussing whether the should come over and sometimes they just disappeared for 1/2 hour at a time. We just gave up and walked our before our final course. We had just had a 9 course tasting menu at Kinloch Lodge on Skye two days before and it was the opposite experience...great food and great service. The bar at Eriska for pre-dinner cocktails was no better. It seemed that other tables were given light appetizers with their cocktails and we received nothing. When we checked out we were asked about our experience was and when we told the gentleman at the desk he seemed shocked and told us he was sure we would her from the hotel. Almost two months later and nothing.
