We got together with our family on a typical beautiful San Diego Sunday to watch the movie The Smashing Machine this UFC fan had been anxiously waiting for to hit the theaters. After getting our nostalgic UFC fandom on watching one of the UFC pioneers Mark Kerr, our sushi connoisseur family decided to try a new All You Can Eat (AYCE) sushi restaurant called Itacho Sushi. We had a deliciously terrific first time dining experience grubbing on stomach stuffing, satisfying, and fresh sushi while also receiving friendly and attentive customer service from our waiter Angelo.
Itacho Sushi is located in the ultra competitive Asian foodie battleground aka the Convoy District or Clairemont Mesa/Balboa Avenue area. The AYCE restaurant can be found within the outdoor strip mall called Independence Square. This strip mall is located on Clairemont Mesa Blvd and you'll find Ethan Allen, Dunn Edwards Paints, PT Eatery, KTV Restaurant, Yukdaejang, and Lolita's Mexican Food. It's next to Bei Yuan Tea & Boba, a short walk across the parking lot to Subway, and it's across the street from 99 Ranch Market. There is plenty of parking in this strip mall. Before you enter through the front door, you're greeted by a ceramic Japanese character dressed in a red ninja mask. As you enter the restaurant, you'll be surprised by how spacious Itacho is. There are an armada of tables and leather pull-out chairs in the main dining room and a slightly smaller back room with larger group tables and some booths. I liked that the focal point of the main dining room was where the sushi chefs were making the sushi dishes. The decor hearkened to its Japanese roots with lantern-like light fixtures, illuminated red fish hanging from the ceiling, Japanese-themed banners hanging throughout the restaurant, hung pictures of Tokyo, and there were several big screen televisions mounted with one of them showing an NFL game. Being a Demon Slayer anime fan, I enjoyed their wall of Japanese masks that I've seen on the anime show. Our server Angelo provided quality customer service, checked on us often to see if we wanted to order more, and the staff who brought out our food orders displayed the same type of diligence as Angelo.
Our family are sushi fans, so we know how quality and amazing sushi should taste like having been blessed to eat sushi in Tokyo, Japan. After stuffing our faces here at Itacho, I can categorically and unequivocally say that for an AYCE Japanese restaurant, they don't compromise on serving quality food and I felt I got my money's worth. During the weekend, the price for AYCE Platinum is $42.99 per person and for Ultra it is $55.99 with the only difference being for an extra $13, you get to choose Nigiri with premium ingredients such as uni, wagyu, lobster, and sea scallop. If you want to save money, dine at Itacho on the weekdays for lunch until 4pm for $29.99. For our family, the Platinum had a large amount of sushi signature rolls, appetizers, yakitori, salads, hand rolls, nigiri, sashimi, soup, ramen, teppanyaki, and dessert. Soda and hot tea come with refills but both are an additional charge. Alcohol is also a separate charge. I made sure to get my money's worth by ordering plenty of sushi rolls and appetizers. Honestly, everything I ordered and sampled from my wife were spectacular and I told Angelo to make sure to tell his management that I really enjoyed everything I ate. Some of my favorites were the Hawaiian Roll, the Sexy Lady Roll, the Coronado Bridge, the Kearny Mesa, the Lobster Roll, the Spicy Krab hand roll, the Tuna Tartare, the Krab Rangoon, and the Tonkotsu Ramen. Make sure to order the Hawaiian Roll, which comes with shrimp tempura, spicy krab, avocado topped with mango sauce and eel sauce, and wrapped in soy paper. It was beautiful when it came out and it was beautifully consumed into my tummy. For an AYCE restaurant, I was surprised by the tasty Tonkotsu Ramen.
We had a blessed Sunday enjoying an entertaining movie and a delectable AYCE sushi lunch at Itacho Sushi. Thanks to our family for generously treating us to both. If you're sushi fans like my family, you won't go wrong eating at Itacho with their quality sushi, good ambience, and memorable customer service from the entire staff.
