Highly Opinionated: An Editor’s Favorite Italian Deli Sandwiches in LA - Eater LA

"An old-school deli known for its simplicity, using soft rolls and sliced Boar’s Head meats like mortadella, cotto salami, dry salami, and provolone, with onions, tomato, lettuce, mayo, mustard, and dressing." - Matthew Kang

"Every town needs an old-school Italian deli, and Italia Bakery has all of the prerequisites in terms of ambience: strip mall location, hand-painted sign, Italian flag out front, and family members behind the counter. While the classic Italian sandwich is great, the best order here is actually the prosciutto sandwich—it comes on a soft roll, basically overflowing with delicate, thinly-sliced meat and an incredibly soft, creamy mozzarella. This is also an amazing source for cold-cuts if you’d prefer to make the sandwiches at home yourself. "

This place is so tiny. But, it really packs a punch. With a deli counter, baked goods, a selection of imported goods, sandwiches, and even some ready made frozen meals. They cram a lot into a small space. But, it's all very authentic. My mom loves the cold cut sandwiches here, so I've been eating them for years. I've also had the turkey sandwich. The turkey was sliced thinly, and the bread is always wonderful. Their sandwiches are always fantastic. And, the frozen baked Ziti is a delicious and convenient way to enjoy a restaurant quality Italian meal at home.

I am very prejudice about this place. I have been going to this deli practically my whole life. They treat you like family and you will feel that way as soon as you walk in. So it's easy to say there service is good and the food is great.

Google
Came here after a nearby event. Sandwiches were delicious although on the smaller side for the price they were. Coming from out of town, however, this is a deli I plan on coming to time and time in the future.

Google
Got the Italian and meatball sandwich which are both delicious. Also love the bread sticks. Service was great.

Google
Been going here for over 30 years. Family run, top notch product and service. Their pastrami, rolls, pizza bread along with all of their baked goods and the sandwiches. Don't get me started on their sandwiches. If you are in GH definitely swing by you won't be sorry

Feels like you’re transported to Italy and you’ve gone to one of your local spots that sells fresh pastas, cheeses, and meats. They also carry imported meats and cheeses as well. Sandwiches are made to order everything taste very fresh and also the bread is made fresh in the morning as well. Try the mortadella, it’s unreal.

Google
This place is so good first time in I got the cold cut sandwich and my god it was good. You can taste the heart and care that goes into it. Everyone’s super nice too.

Google
I used to go here for just their sandwiches but now this is my deli. I live in Santa Clarita and I go out of my way once a week to stock up. Munster cheese and provolone are a must along with honey turkey! Their slices are perfect thickness for sandwiches and Munster cheese quesadillas 😋

Yelp
I am SO ELATED!!!!!! Before I moved to the valley, I lived in the SCV down the street from Italia Deli there, and I was so sad to move because I used to eat there frequently. Yesterday I was in the Trader Joe's parking lot and said to myself, let me go check out this Italia Bakery across the lot and see what's inside. Guess what!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's the SAME PLACE!!! I've never been so happy I found this place!!!!!!!! Oh Turkey and provolone on a soft roll how I've missed you!!!!! In this city where you can find a fast food restaurant on every corner, these fresh delis are all gems!!! If you haven't checked then out, I recommend you do! Now, this location is a bit more compact than the one in SCV, and the line forms directly in front of the entrance which can feel awkward when it's busy, something I imagine is quite common here. You have to grab a ticket number and you will get called up according to your number to order. I LOVE the turkey and provolone on a soft roll, it's just perfection in my eyes! This location also boasts a variety of other intriguing items. I picked up what appeared to be a pizza-like bread and another resembling focaccia. My only minor concern was the absence of labels for these which left me unsure of the names of my selections, I just pointed and said "one of those and one of those." I also bought a garlic bread from the refrigerator section that I plan to make when I prepare with a pasta dish later this week. Additionally, this delightful bakery/deli offers an array of other high-quality items to shop for such as olive oils, or premade pizza or pasta dishes that they make and put in the freezer, and they have so many other things such as Italian cookies! I'm so happy. I noticed some other reviews mentioned the slower pace in sandwich preparation. In a city accustomed to fast food, I can understand this sentiment. With only two staff members behind the counter, and occasionally multiple sandwich orders, the wait can be a bit longer. However, knowing the exceptional quality of their sandwiches, I personally believe the wait is more than worth it. Also when I went inside I had some anxiety because I only had my phone with me so I wanted to tap and pay, the equipment I thought appeared older, but thankfully it's good to know their tap and pay works with the phone! I can't wait to come back to Italia Bakery/Deli again and again and again!

Yelp
We come here regularly, getting the same two sandwiches usually. The cold cut in a soft roll for me, chicken parm on a soft roll for him. The chicken parm, when it's good, is good. But it's inconsistent- today he got through half that was overly cooked and crispy, and on the second half raw chicken. HOW!? For the cost we expect some form of consistency and they went from being consistently good to, in the past year, up and down. Overcooked, now undercooked, hard roll when we ordered soft. I'm taking a star because of the inconsistency and the raw chicken. That's unacceptable.

Yelp
I was transported to the fragrance of what I think was little Italy I ordered myself a cold cut turkey sandwich on a crunchy roll w/ provolone cheese. Hubby ordered turkey w/ roast beef sandwich. We partnered it with the Boulder Canyon sea salt & cracked pepper kettle chips. I must say the Italian dressing & freshness of the turkey cuts & bread made it one of the best sandwiches in town.

Yelp
I moved away from LA 9 years ago and always make an effort to come by when I'm in town. Still owned by the same family. Food still tastes exactly the same. The service is great. They're always smiling. The place is tiny but mighty packed with all kinds of goodies to take home. The hard bread is our favorite. I've searched far and wide at other Italian shops and nothing beats their sandwiches.

Yelp
Visited this place for the first time last week. My daughter kept asking me to make her carbonara pasta, but I could not find the special ingredient (guanciale) anywhere. After a visit to Vons, Ralph's, and Sprouts, I fiinally decided to search for an Italian deli nearby hoping something would come up...and lucky me, Italian Bakery & Deli came up. First impression: for a small place, they sure pack a lot of goodness. Also the staff was super friendly, especially George whom I had the pleasure to order from. He was very patient and even offered some samples of deli meats, cheese, and breads. He took pride in his work and the store's offering. Definitely going back...can't wait to try the specialty sandwiches and other authentic Italian foods.

Yelp
Back for one of my favorites! Large Turkey sub on a hard roll with everything on it + mushrooms! Never disappoints and the best part is saving the other half for lunch the next day. Service is fast with a side of Italian sass. Plenty of parking out front but I highly recommend calling ahead and picking up.

Robert A.

Yelp
Food is excellent very friendly staff my favorite is their eggplant parmigiana Dinner or sandwich but all the sandwiches and pasta varieties are second to none Along with their lunch meat but their bread and rolls are the best around I have been going there for years

Yelp
Nice place to hit up on a Saturday! 9 for 42.00 They were good. Not sweet as all. Friendly workers there.

Carlos P.

Yelp
I love this place. They have some of the best sandwiches. Unfortunately, some of the ladies have been there a very long time and the attitude just starts to show I bought a quarter pound turkey and a hard roll and all I asked was that she cut the role in half she said she couldn't do that I think the original owners and the original staff might be tired of doing the same thing already. They still have greatfood.
google avatar

Ryan R.

Yelp
The old ladies are extremely rude every time you go in or call. It's not worth it when you get treated horribly.... Plus you have to wait around forever and a day because they are slow as snails It's better just getting your lunch meats at the supermarkets then having to deal with them. Completely done-

Yelp
The best Italian deli around. Reminds me of delis in Chicago or New York. Their homemade bread is incredible. It is always freshly baked and love the aroma that fills my car on way home. All of their homemade pastas are so delicious as well as their sandwiches. It is a family owned business and everyone is so friendly. Fair warning, it is always very crowded so be prepared to wait and remember to pull a number for your place in line, but well worth the wait

Yelp
For the first time i walked in to order food for a gathering. A young man stared helping me when a lady approaches him saying she would help me instead . I said to the lady can i have a menu of your catering. She grabs one gives it to me and i sensed it that she was expecting for me to hurry with my order. Didn't know what to order. She was standing like she had no time for me all annoyed. I decided on my order. She writes the order down extremely annoyed which was a puzzle for me as to why. She walks away and i see a younger lady preparing a bread order. I asked if she could prepare a bread oder first me as well .She rudely responded by saying , whoever is helping me should prepare the order. She was very rude and annoyed. I said oops sorry ok. . I also asked a question about something which she answered my question but she was not happy to have answered my question. She then told a client that everyone is annoying her with their questions. I knew she was talking about me. I apologized to her to her to be be polite but didn't understand as to what the big deal was like how hard was it to answer a question? I then told the lady which was originally helping me of my experience and she didn't act like she cared. She replied by saying well I'm sorry u feel that way. She insinuated with this comment that it is me with the issue and there is nothing wrong with their service. Poor service. I will never ever will go back and would tell others of my bad experience. . She was charging me $40 extra and when i brought it to her attention she didn't say sorry she just said oops now this is your total. She also said $2 to cut the sandwiches i said you charge to cut the sandwiches i am buying from u ? She didn't say yes we are. She said well times are tough. Bad service, rude!!!!!!! .

Yelp
"All customers are the same" is what the manager said to me while I was waiting to be rung up for only the tiramisu I was purchasing and not waiting for sandwiches to be made like the other 3 people in line. I can understand that IF there were not 4 people behind the counter making their 3 sandwiches and a 5th (the manager herself) busy moving stuff around on shelves (she was not even stocking the shelves). Needless to say, customer service was extremely pisspoor and I will not be back and telling everyone I know to avoid this place. There are plenty of Italian delis in the SF Valley to take all of their business.
google avatar

Kristen B.

Yelp
We have been coming to Italia for many years/decades! They have by far, the best deli sandwiches around. I am also able to purchase one of my family's favorite cheeses (Fontinella) that we can rarely find elsewhere. Service is always excellent!
google avatar

Joseph U.

Yelp
Wish I could give this place a 5 star but the service knocks off a start - right off the bat. I've been coming to this little gem since the 90's but it has changed a bit since the original owner passed away a few years back. You can't go wrong with their delicious cold cuts and sandwiches, but it wouldn't hurt if their staff smiled or said thanks for coming in. Small details that go along way for a long time customer.
google avatar

George B.

Yelp
Really bad They have no bread at lunchtime, at 11:00 am. (We don't have bread we only have this two left you when it or not) Before they will apologize to you that they don't have the bread ready on Time, but today is different today They're talking to you like you not a important they don't care about your business. Service is bad

Glenn S.

Yelp
The sandwiches are good. I also bought some salami, mortadella and pastrami to take home and nobody liked the pastrami. The staff are friendly.
google avatar

Jack T.

Yelp
What a place this is. It's like you walk into a deli in Italy everything there speaks Italian. There bread wow. Their food is awesome service is out of this world. Great people awesome food.
google avatar

Christine T.

Yelp
I have been a faithful customer for over 20 years; love everything I order. Just purchased their Easter breads which are so hard to find, they were fresh and delicious.
google avatar

Shauna C.

Yelp
Been feening lasagna and this place was right next to a Trader Joe's and target. Store has everything Italian you could want. Lasagna was a bit salty and not as cheesy as my favorite at lasagna from Caraba's. Bread was hard as a brick. Gotta try something else maybe.

Alex T.

Yelp
Slowest service I've been received here Inwill bit be returning . Make sure to set aside an hour for 1 sandwich to be made and don't have the guy behind the counter make it
google avatar

Bobby K.

Yelp
Had the imported mortadella on a soft bread, it was amazing, super thin sliced, a lot of meat and the bread almost melts in your mouth. The ambiance is beautiful, the place takes you back in time like watching a Deniro movie, the old movies not his recent crap. Thank God I didn't read the reviews before going in today, the reviews complain about the service. I agree the service is crap, the ladies got attitude, but who cares! The sandwiches are delicious. I always say, you want top notch service, go pay a therapist, nobody cares about your feelings. Order a sandwich, pay for it (good food ain't cheap, and cheap food ain't good) and enjoy. Don't expect a cheerful experience by the staff, expect a 10/10 sandwich. They can improve their conversation skills, but they all seemed like introverts, it's fine so as long as you keep making them fire sandwiches.

Anna P.

Yelp
I ordered a cold cut sandwich and there was a meat spread on both sides of the bread which completely ruined the whole thing. I gave up after a few bites with the odd flavors. The pastrami sandwich for my husband was ridiculously small. I really wanted to like this local place.

Idale K.

Yelp
Great bread and service is top notch . I love how fresh it all is and it gives me the perfect italian feel!

Terry M.

Yelp
Great sandwiches and other items imported from Italy. One thing they sell is so good that I won't even say what it is because I don't want them to sell out of it before I go back.
google avatar

Diana M.

Yelp
Great local spot for OG Italian food! Sandwiches are AMAZING! Cannolis are a must have!!
google avatar

Miguel G.

Yelp
Come here for the cappocola sandwich. They have a good chicken Parma as well. You have to try the wine cookies too
google avatar

Carlos V.

Yelp
Delicious! So many options, Better then subway! Very friendly staff, especially Shelby! Great attitude. Definitely recommended if your in Granada hills! Even has a small market for a one stop shop for cheap.
google avatar

Elise B.

Yelp
It smells amazing as soon as you step in the door and the food does not disappoint! My family and I were impressed with the selection of meats and Italian goods!
google avatar

Sergeant G.

Yelp
Only ever had sandwiches here. Hubby eats here all the time. Turkey and Swiss on a French roll. Lettuce and tomatoes, no onions. They are super yummy, fresh and filling. Workers are very nice and welcoming. Will try other menu options in the future.
google avatar

Brittney P.

Yelp
The best sandwiches you can buy anywhere!!! I always say the bread determines the quality of the sandwich and this bread is the absolute freshest and best!!! We get the large peppered Turkey on a hard roll with extra veggies and sandwich sauce!!!
google avatar

Sal O.

Yelp
Great sandwiches , fresh baked bread along with fresh veggies and meat. Very nice staff but because they are so busy it will take some time to get your sandwich. That's because it's so busy so I can't knock them for that. Love walking into the deli and smelling fresh baked bread. I recommend trying everything, you can't go wrong. Oh man I ate too Much....
google avatar

Lisa F.

Yelp
Came in for lunch on Saturday from a friends recommendation and this place did not disappoint. Our cold cut sandwich's were delicious. Can't wait to try more sandwiches!
google avatar

Jeff L.

Yelp
This was a fun place to stop. I was nearby and just decided to drop into this place and was happy I did. It was just starting to get crowded but I grabbed my number and waited. The Chicken Parm sandwich was excellent. I just grabbed a seat outside and ate. If I'm in the area I'll definitely stop in again!
google avatar

Tawnya B.

Yelp
This place is so nice! They have delicious sandwiches and friendly staff. They have so many Italian treats too. I'll definitely come again.
google avatar

Steve A.

Yelp
I have been coming here for years good sausage and meatball sandwiches but stay away from the chicken parmigiana sandwich flavor is good but dry and rubbery chicken They have both hard and soft rolls
google avatar

Rory O.

Yelp
Extremely rude staff, not worth your time visiting. I showed up a few minutes ago to pick up a takeout order and the lady behind the counter began yelling at me because I was "blocking the door." Have in mind, I had literally just stepped inside the business less than 2 seconds ago and was just trying to see where the line was starting. Horrible way to treat customer who are paying over $100 to feed a small group of people. This was my first time ordering from Italia and it will definitely be my last. Extremely rude and unprofessional staff.

Christina R.

Yelp
The only thing Italian about this place is in their name and the food they resell. I was on this side of town so the easiest thing for me was to run in and get some stuff. My family has been coming here for years when it is convenient. However, today I went in solo and was very surprised order was turned down. I wanted a couple extra pieces of bread as our family has grown, and I was told I could only get six because the rest was for "our" customers, I kindly checked out and was feeling very upset that I couldn't get a couple extra pieces of bread but I also realized I'm just gonna drive over to San Carlos where I can be greeted and was greeted with friendly smiles and an amazing smell of fresh bread .San Carlos is absolutely great and I don't know why I ever put convenience over quality and a good experience, lesson learned. We won't be retuning to this crap.
google avatar

Celeste A.

Yelp
The sandwiches here are to die for! The prosciutto sub is my favorite, but I also love the Italian cold cut, & I've been told the lasagna is pretty solid too! Pro tip: have somebody else go for you; I've never actually been inside, but apparently the ordering system is chaotic, & the restaurant itself is super busy. Picking up your food will probably take a while! & no online ordering.
google avatar

Peter P.

Yelp
Food is mediocre and products are very overpriced but my God is their service horrible. They hired new kids out of high school who have never worked a day in their lives. Sandwiches take 20 mins to make and by that I mean 20 mins to assemble together. It's ridiculous. By the time they're done your sandwich is soggy and inedible. Go somewhere else, Jersey mikes or anywhere with half brain dead employees that can put ham on top of cheese. They need to fire that young skinny blonde kid that works in the front that can't put a sandwich together. I'll never come back here again. I've never seen anyone take 10 mins to lay down slices of meat on a sandwich. Do yourself a favor, avoid this place at all costs.
google avatar

Johnny P.

Yelp
I have been going here for the past 30 years it's a family operated establishment & never once been disappointed. There fresh bread is always amazing also all there deli are imported from Italy , the owner always welcomes you as family & the staff are awesome to . My family & I can never get enough of this place .
google avatar

M. G.

Yelp
3X there ...never again I don't care how good their food is ... they have bad service looks like their employees don't give a $!t and treat you like crap
google avatar

Harmony V.

Yelp
food is nasty af and the customer service is horrible i will never return back and i dont recommend this place at all! my husband ordered a sandwich with no onions and he is allergic to them and they still put it on the sandwich! they only gave half our money back and the cookies were stale! i dont know why people are keeping this place in business.
google avatar

Romalda L.

Yelp
I called in advance to place a large order, I was told to just come in and order because they were busy. I came placed my order and the two older ladies behind the counter were just complaining about my order. Saying what was going to do with so much sliced meats. She complained when I told her I needed 2 dozen rolls. I spent $137 I was in a bind because I had company to feed. I so regret paying for the order. I should've just walked out after she completed the order and gave her a piece of my mind. How could you be so rude to your customers? If you are that miserable you shouldn't be working a job like this! Do better Italia Deli!!! Too many complaints about your customer service should be recognized!!!
google avatar

Betty S.

Yelp
One word. Rude staff! Snippy sarcastic young girl. The only nice staff person is a young man. In a time when food is so expensive - one would think that the customer service should be top notch. There are other great Italian deli's in the valley which is where I plan on going moving forward. At least acknowledge & welcome your patrons when they enter your store.

Caitlyn K.

Yelp
Great food, but sometimes can be rude. When I order on door dash and pay for it in advance they still make me take a number and wait and by the time I get my food My lunch break is over. They can just hand it to me as it is ready and paid for but they do not. Update: I got back to work and opened my sandwich and the pickles and peppers I paid EXTRA for are not there
google avatar

Lydia J.

Yelp
Great selections and great food!! Love the service always helpful!! Clean well stocked store!!

Professor Higgins P.

Yelp
I've been coming here for probably 25 years, and I've never lived in LA. When I visit in-laws, this becomes a must-go as it's a legit Italian deli that's hard to find in California. My go-tos: Spaghetti and meatballs Meatball or sausage and pepper sandwich Italian roast beef hot w marinara Pastrami hot on a soft roll Pizza bread (like everyone) Family run business. The moms run it and are a tad salty (but I love them), and the kids are super nice and do a great job running the front. Love this place - I started coming here before I was married and now my kids (now teenagers) ask for it every time we visit. Here's to 25 more years!

Sergio L.

Yelp
Absolutely fresh delicious sandwiches! The food and the service are the best! I definitely will be back and I highly recommend Italia Bakery & Deli!
