16 Excellent Old-School Italian Spots In London

"Italia Uno is a haven. For bedraggled students, haggard workers, exhausted delivery drivers, and shouty Neapolitans. Before the advent of delivery apps, the ramshackle deli in Bloomsbury would be filled with football-lovers and undergraduates with a ratio of five cigarettes and three Napoli shirts to every one vaguely fingered copy of The Waste Land. Coffee and cold cuts are standard, but our best memories are of mortadella paninis, sloppy melanzane, and blaring Serie A on screen." - jake missing, heidi lauth beasley, rianne shlebak

London’s Best Old-School Italian Restaurants, Delis, and Trattorias | Eater London

"Everybody loves Italia Uno, including the office types who clog its entrance on weekdays, the football fans who come to watch Serie A matches on one of its six TVs, and the delivery riders who drink espressos while their e-bike batteries charge in the corner. The food unites these people, as does the place’s homely atmosphere, which are both down to Felice, Italia Uno’s tireless, good-natured proprietor. Felice has been assembling finely tuned sandwiches here for over two decades. His finest work includes the bondola, which balances the silky richness of mortadella with the sharpness of marinated artichoke hearts, and the picante, a surprisingly spicy sausage and pecorino number. There’s other great stuff too, like the wholesome rigatoni with meat sauce, which feels more ragu alla bolognese than spag bol." - Isaac Rangaswami

Google
I Visited Italia Uno for the first time and thought it was fantastic. Proper old school Italian café. No thrills, just a good place to get a bit of lunch and sip a coffee. I get that some people want a bit more from an Italian, probably the same folk who've never been to Italy and think all cafés and restaurants there are sophisticated and elegant. This is real. The Pasta and Panini were great and the Torta de Nonna was just as good as I've had in Italy. The food and coffee in my pictures came to little over £16. I'll be back

It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but the food is way better than you’d expect. The sandwiches are made with fresh, hand-cut meat, real cheese, and crisp veggies. The sun-dried tomatoes stood out—they added a ton of flavor. It’s a small, family-run spot with good portions, and at £5 for a 10-inch sandwich, it’s a great deal. Definitely one of those places you might overlook, but once you try it, you’ll get why people keep coming back. I’ll be stopping by for another sandwich next time I’m in the neighborhood.

Google
This is a very authentic Italian café with incredibly delicious food and unbelievably good prices. You’ll quickly forget that you’re in London, having just come from the busy Oxford Street. Instead, you’ll find yourself enjoying fresh, homemade Italian food, excellent coffee, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

This is a very unique Italian café. At first sight things look a little bit messy but I guess it works and it's what gives this place its character. There is a good selection of panini with authentic products. The coffee was really good. The service was friendly. Highly recommended

Google
Such a nice hidden gem in central London. So authentically Italian with very reasonable prices. We got the lasagna and the pastas of the day which they can do a plate of 50/50. Would highly recommend

Affordable / cheap but really savory sandwiches. Excellent price for the quality of the products used. Ham and mozzarella were excellent. I Recommend if you want to watch the soccer game too

Yelp
i had the pesto pasta which was yummy. serving size was medium and i had some to take home. the chef made sure to add extra cheese and pepper on it before packing it up for me. he is such a sweet person! never been to italy but felt i was taken there by the restaurant's authenticness. it's got a set of outdoor seating to people watch. but its limited so make sure to grab a seat before its taken. excited to go again and try the sandwiches.

Yelp
If you come to London as an student and you are looking for great food for a fair price this place is for you. I got a delicious Panini! The owners are amazing as well. Great service!

Yelp
I would give a 500 Star Rating for patron Felice alone & his adorable Neopolitan family but the food is absolutely the best simple fare you can get even in Italy I haven't eaten as well for as little.Felice means happy & that is certainly what you will feel after just one visit here. Try the delicious Peccante : ciabatta with parma ham, cheese, lettuce & extra sun dried tomatoes with a pomadoro (tomato) soup : tastes made in heaven. On street parking meters are v. expensive,so come by bus or tube (Goodge Street) & then wander south down lovely, leafy Charlotte street & take in the beauty of this special part of London known as Fitzrovia (after the Duke of Fitzroy)

Yelp
Cheap and delicious sandwiches? Yes please! We came here for lunch as a suggestion by a co-worker. It's exciting being in Central London for work as now I can try new places for food! Italia Uno is an Italian (duh) deli. I ordered a sandwich with spicy salami and cheese. The sandwich is pretty amazing. Toasted bread with a small amount of vinaigrette to give it some moisture (and doesn't need to be slathered with mayonnaise). Nice fresh meats, cheeses and veggies on top. Dining in my sandwich came to £4.40. Not too shabby I have to say. I envision we'll be visiting this place on a semi-regular basis!

Yelp
£4 for a 12 inch pizza? Don't mind if I do! This is a definite favourite of the local uni kids as well as the media folks that inhabit the Charlotte Street/Goodge Street area. They have a wide selection of pizzas available, made to order and are really quite good quality. Not too greasy, the crust doesn't taste like cardboard and they get out a high quantity of pizzas out quite quickly.

Yelp
Small Italian sandwich shop on Charlotte St that has an undeniably authentic feel to it (I've never been to Italy but was first introduced to it by an Italian friend and he assures me that this is the case) Long lines during lunch, and the sandwiches aren't made particularly quickly so even with 7-8 people ahead of you, you can expect a 15 minute wait. That being said, they're cheap and delicious. Personal favourite is the bondola with extra artichoke hearts. The sandwiches are a good size, and I believe they're all under a fiver (at least if you get them to go). Worth noting that they do run out of certain types of bread by late afternoon, and that it's CASH ONLY. They also have a loyalty card (buy 6, get the 7th free) I've never gone there to watch football but apparently it's a great spot for Serie A. Not sure if they have a particular fan association but said Italian friend mentioned that he has watched a number of Napoli games there and that it gets packed. There's an area in the back with a TV and apparently an even larger downstairs room with another TV. There's some sort of minimum spend to watch games, but you're basically covered with a sandwich and a drink from what I understand. Have always wanted to go for a game so will update if I ever get around to it.

Yelp
Cheap amazingness. Sundried tomato panini with salami and cheese rocks my world!

Yelp
This place is wild - super crowded & cramped at lunchtime, with a line out the door; the old Italian guy who runs it is genuinely sweet, and it seems like one of the last great family businesses in the neighborhood. The sandwiches are criminally cheap & all delicious - and they even have a stamp card if you go there often! Seating inside & out, but great for takeaway... or watching Italian tv & sipping a beverage once the crazy lunch crowd has wandered back to their desks.

Yelp
Every time I am in London (i now live in germany), I come here and have a sandwich and a coffee. I have never ever found a place where the sandwiches are that delicious. I ve tried to find comparable places in germany (I even live in an italian neighbourhood) but never found one. Try it, i guarantee you ll love it. My personal recommendation is sandwich number one.

Yelp
5 stars for the well-composed authentic Italian sandwiches!

Yelp
food was lousy and overpriced. Coffee tasted like talcum powder. Staff were rude and arrogant. waitress who served me had hair dangling on food. And to top it off baby's nappy being changed on the counter. Yuk!!!! Bad experience .
