The Curious History of Ivar’s, Washington’s Beloved Chowder Chain | Eater

"A cozy, old-school waterfront restaurant and adjacent seafood bar at the Mukilteo ferry landing, notable for its wood-paneled décor, porthole bathroom doors, smooth-jazz background music, and the scent of fresh sourdough rolls. It offers views of Whidbey Island, Hood Canal oysters on the half shell, and—distinctively for this location—soft-serve ice cream that draws kids and nostalgic adults alike. The sit-down dining room feels lived-in and friendly, while the nearby counter-service seafood bar is more utilitarian and ballpark-like; staff and small traditions (including the practice of feeding seagulls) help the place retain a classic, comforting seaside character." - Tove Danovich

We had a great experience at Ivar’s Mukilteo. The view was beautiful, and the ambience was warm and relaxing. Our server was really attentive, especially with our kid’s allergy needs, which made us feel comfortable. The Dungeness crab dip was rich and flavorful, and the crab & lobster cakes were perfectly done with a delicious sauce. I really enjoyed the seafood paella, it was so hearty and full of flavor. Even the kid’s grilled chicken was nicely cooked with fresh sides. Great food, lovely setting, and thoughtful service. Would definitely come back 😊

Google
Beautiful water view and delicious seafood! The salmon sandwich and fish tacos were super tasty. Crab bisque was good but not great. Paella was a bit bland. If I were local I’d definitely come back but not order those items again. Great service and nice dock next door to walk out and view the water!

I expected way much more from this place. Almost no 🅿️ for restaurant visitors , you need to pay for parking next to it. The first thing that surprised me a little was that when we asked about the order and the availability of items, we were told they had fresh oysters. But after we had already placed the order, unfortunately, the waiter informed us that they were not available that day. The cod was very dry, and the sauce wasn’t particularly tasty. The chicken was covered in a red sauce, but the menu didn’t clearly indicate that it would be completely topped with it. The clam chowder was more or less the same as in most places, though here it was served in a bread bowl. The seafood stew also came with sausages ( for what ?🙈) , which didn’t go well together at all and added an artificial smoky flavor. I can’t say I feel like returning to this place. The only thing that wins you over is the absolutely stunning view.

This isn’t your typical Ivar’s — it’s a more upscale dining experience located right on the water, with gorgeous waterfront views that elevate the whole experience. The seafood options are plentiful and fresh, but they also offer traditional meat dishes if seafood isn’t your thing. The brussels sprouts were absolutely to die for — perfectly crisp and full of flavor. We also tried the crab artichoke dip, which had a nice kick to it, though it was a little spicier than we expected. The service was warm and attentive without being overbearing. We didn’t even have a reservation but lucked out with a cozy window seat looking right out over the water. The restaurant was clean and well-maintained, and there was plenty of parking available just across the street — two hours for only $2.50, which felt like a steal. Before dinner, we took a walk along the beach nearby, which made for a lovely start to what turned out to be a spontaneous and memorable date night. Overall, prices were pretty reasonable for the quality, view, and atmosphere. Highly recommend for a relaxed yet special evening out.

Solid menu. We really enjoyed the fish sandwichs (blackened halibut) and salmon. The crab toasted sandwich was ace too. Blankets for the people that are feeling a bit cool

July, nice weather, perfect temperature to eat on one of the benches right in front the bay and on the side of the restaurant. We ordered to go. Fish&Chips was really good. Fried oysters also really good. If you are in the area and have some craving for fried fish and want something quick enjoying the view, have a look at this place.

Google
This review is for the fish bar which is on the left hand side of the Ivar’s building. The sit down restaurant is on the right. The fish bar is walk up with a small indoor seating area attached to it with a few booths. The fish bar walk up has a separate line than the ice cream, which can back up with kids on a sunny day. The cod fish & chips is good but portions are smaller than they used to be (see photo). Coleslaw is good, sweet, a bit wet though. Fries are good, not soggy. Skip the specials like the rock crab cup. $10 for literally a bite of crab, the rest is celery and cocktail sauce.

Google
This review is for the walk up window, not the sit down/dine-in restaurant on the right. Ice cream was delicious (they have soft serve) and staff was amazing. We witnessed the cashier replace a little girls ice cream after she had dropped it on the ground, free of charge - top tier service and care for customers if I’ve ever seen it. The ice cream cones are HUGE so beware ordering anything larger than a regular/medium. Great place to grab an ice cream or snack and view the sound.

Yelp
My favorite part of Ivar's is always the calamari and chipotle aioli. Absolutely delicious every time. I ordered the noodles, which were fresh tasting and the seafood was delicious. Especially the shrimp, which was well seasoned and covered in better. Fish burger was a 5/5 I am told Service was very kind and accommodating. And the ambiance hasn't changed since I was a child. Still very nice with a gorgeous view of the water.

Yelp
I love Ivars and wanted to finally try one of their sit down restaurants. We got a couple different seafood dishes that our server recommended. All the seafood was super fresh and tasted great! Even with all the food we had, it wasn't heavy at all or overly sauced/seasoned so you could really taste the seafood. The creme brulee was just ok, but you mainly come here for the stunning view and great seafood. Definitely worth a drive to! Apps: Clam Chowder and Steamed Clams and Mussels Entrees: Grilled Salmon and Grilled Sea Bass Dessert: Creme Brûlée

Yelp
This was our third time dining here, and the consistency in excellence never waivers. We made reservations and were seated at a table with a lovely view! The warm welcome from the host and hostess, both beaming with big smiles, was a pleasant contrast to the chilly winds outside. Our server, Taylor, was fantastic--attentive, knowledgeable, and full of great suggestions (which we happily took--and wow!). The Chef's specials were not only delicious but beautifully presented. Thank you all for making another fabulous dining experience! We'll definitely be back.

Yelp
First of all I was hoping and expecting for so much more. We came here with a group for my son's birthday and all it had going was the ambiance. Beautiful waterfront views, our server was nice and attentive, but the food was a strike out for me. I ordered the New York with Scallops. The steak was ok. For $50 a sure let down. I added the scallops and they were extremely overcooked. The asparagus was good, the baked potato was cooked but not all the way. Overall I probably would have been better off with something else. For being a Mukilteo staple this fell well short of expectations.

Yelp
I've been here a few times throughout the years and realized I haven't written a review yet! Ivar's Mukilteo Landing has been great for Happy Hour for my family and bf! As far as I know, we've eaten lunch here before as well but I distinctly remember more of Happy Hour. The hosts are always so friendly as they welcome you in! The staff is attentive and checking in every now and then! Happy Hour is 3-6pm daily and offers a few good menu items. 1) You have got to try the grilled sockeye salmon sandwich! (Literally the BEST salmon sandwich that Ivar's has on their menu!!!) the salmon is cooked well, and with crispy bacon, crispy onion strips, lettuce, tomato on a ciabatta bun...it's *chef's kiss* Flavors are incredible! 2) I also love their mussels in garlic white wine broth, and their seared ahi tuna! The clam chowder is tasty and thick! You receive views of the water and Whidbey island across. The patio is nice to sit by when it's warmer weather -- you get to see the ferry boats pass by in the distance.

Yelp
3 of us were not very hungry so we shared 2 entrees and an app. Portion size were decent. Crab/lobster cakes: not my favorite, it's much more flat and I thought the curry flavor was interesting but overpowered the seafood taste. My friends liked it though. The seafood salad: this was much better than I expected - the smoked scallops were so good and unique, the little shrimp were interesting to eat. The blackened salmon was on the drier side though. I wanted vegetables which is why I got this and I'd get this again. Northwest fried platter: the cod is fluffier than the halibut. The shrimp and clam strips were both decent too - liked the shrimp more. The fries aren't bad and the platter comes with 2 each of cocktail and tartar sauce. I had a flight special that they were running for Earth Day I think where I picked 3 out of 5 wines. The white blend and malbec I liked, but the merlot was not as good. These were all PNW wines. The views were nice and we caught the sunset. Another Diner caught glimpses of seals in the water which is apparently not uncommon.

Yelp
Great food. Excellent view. Service was fast and efficient. The lady was bubbly and super friendly. The half order of apps was perfect size for 2 even 3 people. They were still size of small meals. Crab cakes were good. The breading or filler was meh. The slaw with it was delicious and the asparagus was cooked perfect. The hubby dish of halibut and prawns were great. Perfectly cooked. He got a side of crab bisque which was exquisite. Not thin but not too thick either. Nice savory taste. That was a super hit!

Yelp
We went to Ivar's for my fiancés birthday dinner with his parents and grandparents. We arrived around 4pm and sat in the bar area. The view was absolutely stunning, with large windows all along the back wall of the restaurant, looking out onto the Puget Sound and the Clinton ferry terminal. Since we were there early, we were able to order from either the regular menu or the happy hour menu. I ordered the salmon sandwich from the happy hour menu, and we all had the lobster bisque to start. The bisque was super creamy and flavorful, my only complaint was that the entrees were brought out only minutes after the bisque, not giving us enough time to finish the soup. The salmon sandwich was also delicious. My fiancés grandfather made sure to tell the server that we were celebrating a birthday, and the server brought out a slice of chocolate cake with a candle. Overall, we had very nice time, and will definitely return!

Yelp
We stopped for sunset dinner on the way to the ferry. We occasionally get takeout from the fish bar out front and love their Cajun fish and chips and chowder. A bit expensive for fast food. I thought we should roll the dice with the sit down version. We were seated right away after calling in ahead. Small booth but view of the water. Service to start fairly efficient. I ordered the fish and chips as my usual but no Cajun inside! I still find it odd that a restaurant would charge $25 for a small order of fish and chips and not include a simple cup of coke sjaw!!? Our server offered to add that but I declined. The food was cooked properly though as Ivars does know how to fry food! I got a beer and my wife tried the blood orange manhattan which she liked. I didn't scrutinize my bill and just laid it but my math tells me that was a $20 drink or so? She ordered the seafood paella which was served in a large pan. She enjoyed it while we were there but it absolutely did not agree with her the rest of the night while driving and getting settled for the night. She gave me the never again look and statement. I'm not sure if they used old seafood or a seasoning mix that upset her but she eats much more seasoned and spicy food regularly. When trying to get out of there, our section was now completely empty but the server was training someone else and I had to get up and go over to interrupt three of them at a POS station to ask for our bill. Well Ivars is ivars and you can generally get what you expect there usually. After one beer, one cocktail, a Paella, and a small fish and chips without any breads or salads our bill was almost $100 before tip. I can't say that this was a good financial choice compared to say the Hook and cleaver above them or other places. We haven't dined inside an ivars in years dating back to all of the years we kept a boat on lake Union. But we can't say that we will really return any time soon. I can get a tastier fish and chips outside for less and get to the ferry faster.

Yelp
What a fantastic spot! Sat out back. Great view. The clam chowder was amazing. I got the Halibut Fish & Chips. Fantastic!! The service was fast and friendly. Great experience. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Still great! We enjoyed an amazing Happy Hour. The food and drinks are a good value and the food is, as always, excellent. Service, too, was superb. I wish I had our server's name to give him a shout out. He deserves it! Prompt, attentive, welcoming, helpful -- all without hovering or managing that waiter/waitress trick of always asking how your food is when your mouth is obviously full. Great job! Other wait staff were also, without exception, very friendly. Atmosphere - hard to beat a window seat here on a nice, but cool, fall day!

George K.

Yelp
I went there with my wife and ordered the mixed grill seafood for two. What came out was hardly enough for one and the meal was $84 I know glitches can happen in the kitchen. The other couple in our table said are you kidding me will you have enough to eat? The waitress should have known better to take but she didn't and I had to bring it to her attention. She spoke with the manager and ga us a discount and the manager never came to apologize . I don't advise anyone ordering that dish. Ivars is known for their seafood, I really feel like I was really being Jipped if I had not said something again to the waitress We would of paid full price for what it wasn't a full meal. They would of let slide if you don't complain.

Susan Hunt ..

Yelp
Everything tasted good except that it was extremely salty, especially the grilled salmon and lobster bisque. I had the salmon and have had a headache since I ate the salmon yesterday. My husband had the bisque. We are both feeling very dehydrated, despite drinking a ton of water. Disappointed and frustrated. The service was great. However, due to how we are feeling today, being dehydrated and the headache, we may not be going back.

Yelp
I took my parents here for Mother's Day, hoping for a special evening, but unfortunately, both the food and service fell short. We were seated in the bar area during dinner. I ordered the halibut, which was overcooked and bland. Honestly, I could have prepared a better meal at home. What made matters worse was the service. Our waiter was mostly absent--we had to flag down the manager or other staff members just to get assistance. By the time our server finally came over, it was too late to fix the meal. When he brought the check, he asked how the halibut was. I mentioned it was overcooked, and his response was that the kitchen staff was tired from working all day, and I should've said something earlier. I would have, had he actually checked on us during the meal. I did my best to stay upbeat in front of my family, but I left feeling disappointed. It was a missed opportunity for what should've been a memorable occasion.

Yelp
The food is amazing and I tend to eat everything on my plate. The view of the ocean is great and I love watching the ferry go by as I eat. Their fish is always fresh and it's locally sourced. The marionberry soad is a must.

Yelp
Got the best seat in the house! We were there for drinks and a light snack. Drinks we ordrred the Whidby Lemondrop in Raspberry, the Bloody Mary with the House infused cilantro and Jalapeño infused vodka, and the Chukanut Pilsner. Food we ordered the bread basket in half herb and half sourdough Drinks were delicious. The Lemondrop was not too sweet, and tasted fresh, the infused vodka was a great addition to the bloody mary, and bread was fresh and hot. Or server Eric was wonderful, friendly and welcoming. All of our orders came timely and we had a great time in the sun with a beautiful view. When the skies are clear you get a perfect view of the mountains, the ferry passing by, and the islands! I was nervous with the seagulls flying by at first but they never got to close for comfort. As time went by it just became part of the experience and all went perfect.

Yelp
I had high hopes for this spot, given its stellar location and the great things we'd heard, but our experience left a lot to be desired. Calamari: Where do I begin? The calamari was utterly bland, and the flavor suggested it had been fried in oil that had long outlived its usefulness. The inclusion of "squid sticks" was baffling--they tasted more like frozen fish sticks from the back of someone's freezer. Dungeness Crab Bisque: This was the biggest letdown. What was supposed to be a rich, hearty bisque tasted more like generic tomato soup with a few sad shreds of crab. I was expecting chunks of fresh crab meat, not the disappointment we were served. Surf and Turf (New York Strip with Shrimp): This was the final nail in the coffin. The steak arrived completely cold, with the butter refusing to melt. Who adds balsamic vinegar to a New York strip? The tangy flavor clashed with the dish and threw everything off. The shrimp was as bland as could be, and the mashed potatoes seemed like they'd been sitting out all day--dry, with zero creaminess. The only saving grace of the entire meal was the view. Unfortunately, Ivar's failed to deliver on what matters most: the food. $130 after tip was painful after this experience. Very disappointed, especially considering how much we were looking forward to dining here.

Yelp
If you take the Boeing Factory tour, this restaurant is short drive away. The food was great and the restaurant has nice views of the bays and neighboring islands.

Yelp
I used to always visit the Ivar's when the ferry terminal was located right next door. That is where we learned that the Mukilteo Ivar's has one of the best soft serve ice cream cones on the area. The soft serve ice cream is rich and creamy and not too sweet. It is a walk-up counter but they do have an indoor dining area. I also love their clam chowder and their shrimp and chips but my family absolutely loves the ice cream cones and this is the only location with these amazing soft serve cones. The one pictured in the photo is a kids size. The ferry terminal and waiting area are now too far to get a cone while waiting but I stop when I can and when I am headed back from Whidbey Island.

Yelp
My husband and I tried to go to HH with our baby. They stated that we can either go eat outside in 47 degree weather or eat in the main room but pay full price even if you ordered the HH menu. Why are we forced to pay full price when you can't accommodate us? I didn't know the HH menu had an age restriction? I totally get it that no minors allowed in that area but are you seriously going to force a family with a 5 month baby to eat outside in the cold? And not provide a suitable alternative? Not a family friendly place and we are never returning.

Yelp
Excellent ambiance for an end of day meal. FABULOUS drinks. 5 Coconut Prawn appetizer with an excellent sauce. Shared seafood dinner - Salmon, Halibut & Crab cakes, garlic mashed potatoes & broiled seasonal squash medley - so FRESH & perfectly seasoned! Perfect amount of food for two. Dessert! HUGE piece of homemade carrot cake. Moist, perfect light frosting with a caramel drizzle on plate. Dark chocolate mousse with a light berry sauce on rim of martini glass with homemade dollop of whipping cream. Beautiful seating by the window and near the fireplace. We had a very quiet & relaxing meal with excellent service. Don't hesitate, go! ENJOY!

Yelp
My wife and I were content with ordering some seafood from the walk-up fish bar window out front, until she pointed out the swanky restaurant attached to it, accessible from a door just a bit further down. As it was nearly freezing outside, we opted for the latter, and were not disappointed with what we found within. Despite arriving around 30 minutes before the restaurant was to be closed (early) for a private event, we were seated without complaint, and attended to immediately. We settled on some fried calamari, which my wife had been craving and seeking (to no avail, up to this point) all weekend, as well as a cup of the lobster bisque, and some Dungeness crab and artichoke dip, to split between us. To accompany our appetizer array, my wife paired the Shellfish wine flight, and for myself, a Blood Orange Old Fashioned. Nothing about the experience disappointed in any way. The chipotle lime aioli for the perfectly crispy fried calamari gave it a kick, while simultaneously taking the edge off the typically pungent and slightly off-putting aroma of cuttlefish. The crab and artichoke dip was equal parts land and sea, and coated with cheese - who could complain about that? And the lobster bisque? Creamy, comforting, savory, and with an aroma and flavor that delicately balances and captures the essence of lobster without overpowering or overwhelming it. I've never had better. Service was friendly, welcoming, efficient, and most importantly, unobtrusive - our server was there exactly when she needed to be, and left us to ourselves when she wasn't. And despite the looming deadline for the private event, we were never once felt pressured or rushed to end our dining experience. From tip to tail, everything about our visit to Ivar's was exactly what one should expect from a competent restaurant: an enchanting ambiance, diligent staff, and incredible cuisine. If you're an out-of-towner who finds themselves in Mukilteo, even while waiting for, or after disembarking from the ferry, you'd be wise to take to heart the advice of the restaurant's namesake, Ivar Haglund, and "KEEP CLAM", slow down, and stop in for a meal here. Even if it's just from the take-out window out front. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Danielle M.

Yelp
As someone who has lived between Mukilteo and Lynnwood since 2011, I'm really surprised to see Ivars' quality tank so much since my last visit. To preface this review, I go maybe twice per year and each time I can expect the same great service! This time was no different, but that is possibly the only thing this place has going for it. Our server was so attentive and brought us refills throughout the meal. The dining room is beautiful and nautical themed, but the bar was closed for renovations. Getting straight to the point, the food is not worth the price. Sometime between my last visit in 2024 and my first visit of the year, they started charging for table bread. Strange? But not a deal breaker. I ordered clam chowder as an appetizer, and that was great! But the sandwich I ordered had a fish filet on it, which looked like a Walmart fish patty you could airfry at home. The bread was undercooked and doughy, but hard on the outside. And for the price, serving iceberg lettuce over butter lettuce is kind of a funny choice (visually, and taste-wise.) To be honest? I would not be calling out the lettuce if the ready of the sandwich was edible. My brother's fish and chips sort of had the same "value" quality look and taste to it. For $20 minimum per entree... very disappointing.

Yelp
We have been to Ivars in Mukilteo multiple times and it does not disappoint. Started with the clam chowder. It was creamy and very delicious. For the main course I ordered the seafood risotto. It was outstanding. The rice was cooked perfectly and the seafood medley with the butternut squash provided an excellent flavor profile. Great location with view of water.

Yelp
Great place for business lunch. I was delighted to see so many non-alcoholic cocktails were available. The view is killer, too.

James M.

Yelp
Kind of a mixed bag. Ivar's is certainly following a trend among restaurants with so so food at exorbitant prices. Rolls used to be complimentary now they charge you. I don't know what they were thinking about when they made the calamari however I have never seen squid shaped like a fish stick. While my wife's grilled salmon was very good (it should for what they charge) my halibut was very thin cut and dry. With appetizer, drinks and meal the bill with tip for 3 was just over $200 which is outlandish considering the quality of the food. I don't know how they think that this is sustainable. Disappointed but not surprised.
google avatar

Yelp
This Ivar's is definitely a great toss up from the other locations, while they don't specialize in the classic fish and chips the dine in options are definitely on par. The blackened salmon was pretty good and while we came in with a party that had to be seated between two tables, our server was able to help get everyone situated very well. Service was also very prompt and the views were very nice, would recommend other visitors not be seated outside due to the cold weather coming in lately :)

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant on the water. Friendly efficient service. Great menu featuring mostly seafood. I had the Grilled Hawaiian Swordfish. Incredibly delicious.

Yelp
I enjoyed a very nice dinner here with my partner. The wait was 20 minutes; so we sat at the bar, and service was still great! I got the blackened tacos with salmon, the chips and salsa on the side were excellent. I also shared an appetizer with my boyfriend that included a caesar salad that was so delicious I forgot to take a photo of it. The view from inside the restaurant was great, and the pier right outside was even better.

Yelp
WOW. All these years I thought Ivar's was just a walk up window. This gem was hiding here all along. Honestly, this was one of my favorite places in Washington for seafood. Seafood was so fresh, delicious, and if you go to their happy hour - at a great price. I definitely recommend going to their happy hour for the deals (3-6 pm). I would eat everything I got all over again. Blackened salmon Caesar salad is a happy hour only item ;) Great views of the water and options for indoor or outdoor seating. Reservations can be made online. Perfect place for a nice date night!

Yelp
Fresh seafood in good portions. Nice atmosphere with view of the sound and coming and go ferry. We made the last minute decision to visit for dinner at 5:30pm on Monday. The place was packed but they managed to let us in fairly quick without reservation maybe due to right after the happy hour was done. Copper river salmon featured the menu of the day, both kind and sockeye. My son ordered the duo which was the waiters recommendation so he can try both salmon. I ordered the halibut. They were pretty good portions priced at 40-50$. I had some vodka based cocktail and the lemon drop, very good! This is the place to go when the weather is nice, just to make the day complete it right.

Yelp
Had a weekend brunch here and I wasn't aware of this location until I was told about it. It's a nice location by the water which we got to see at our table since we had a window seat. This Ivar's is not the fish and chips fast food restaurant. This is the more classy kind of place where you would feel under dressed going in with shorts and a tee. Of course, you're allowed to go in like that, but definitely wouldn't fit the setting. Preferably to dress a bit nicer here. I had an enjoyable experience and ordered a nice mimosa and a salmon hash with egg and bacon. The presentation was nice until I devoured it all. It was a good portion and tasted great. Not much else I could say about this dish. I paid for what I wanted and I got it. Service was solid. Very professional and came by enough times to see how we were doing. Got the occasional water refill and had our plates taken away when we're done and ready. I enjoyed the dining experience and would definitely come back again. Parking was easy to get across the street in the designated Ivar's parking lot. Don't get confused with the paid parking else you will be paying for parking that you didn't need to in the first place.

Yelp
Mention "Ivar's" and most people will say fish & chips. No me. Say "Ivar's" and I immediately go with ice cream. Specifically, a soft serve twist cone at the Mukilteo terry terminal. It's 100 times better than Dairy Queen. The regular cone is significant bigger. The soft serve flavor is better. Vanilla is vanilla-ier, and chocolate is cocoa-ier. Go here for the soft serve twist cones. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Great view of course. A little limited on menu items and definitely the prices have gone up. Food was great.

Yelp
We choose Ivar's because it was the first warm, sunny day weekend spring evening. What better way to spend it than dinner on the water. Having reservations paid off, otherwise you are not dining on a weekend when the sun is out. We asked for a window seat and within 7 minutes of arriving our window seat was ready. Our waiter was nice, but not nearly as personable as some of the other waiters we observed at other tables. Thats fine, because most of the time I find over friendly wait staff annoying. I loved the new fresh/daily menu insert; it now includes several options for dinner for two. Despite being a full house (I mentioned that it was a beautiful evening), service was prompt, dinners were top notch. I love the elevated feel of Ivars Mukilteo. It really nice, not stuffy or overpriced. I must also note, that it is more relaxed since the ferry has moved up the street last year. No more headlights flooding the dining room.

Yelp
Great spot with tasty food and an even better vibe. The seafood was fresh and the place has a nice, laid-back feel. Big shoutout to Sarena she was super friendly and full of energy! She really made our visit better with how welcoming and upbeat she was. It's always nice when someone genuinely seems happy to help. Would definitely come back!

Yelp
TLDR: delicious food (highlight: well cooked shellfish), bright/warm ambience, beautiful view of the beach, and great service. I really enjoyed my dinner here. When you walk into the dining area you notice the low ceilings, warm lights, the fireplace, and the plethora of windows which all contribute to the overall cozy vibes the restaurant has. We ordered the penn cove steamers with both clams & mussels on the classic sauce, the 10oz NY strip loin steak, the seafood fettucine, and the NW seafood cobb salad. The steak was unremarkable. I thought it was a little chewy, and it didn't really hold as much flavor as the other dishes. Everything else was fantastic though. The shellfish in both the dishes were cooked well. The mussels & clams both tasted tender with just enough chew. Neither were too fishy, their flavors were subtle and very enjoyable in the sauces they came in. The fettuccine was also good. Not too heavy on the cream, making good use of the saltiness of the seafood included in the dish. I also enjoyed the salad quite a bit. It was fresh and the different ingredients really complemented each other nicely. To add to the experience, we saw a heron while looking out the window. And we were able to walk out onto the balcony to enjoy the beach.

Yelp
First time trying out this place as was in the area for business. As I was in a mood for seafood, and this had a great view, thought to give it a try. The server was very knowledgeable and recommended me one of the special dishes My coworker had fish and chips and he said it was the best he's ever had in his life. I got the halibut special, and it was cooked to perfection. We shared the crab appetizer, and it was so so good. I will definitely be coming back to this place before I take the ferry or after, depending on the time.

Yelp
This is a prime spot to enjoy lunch or dinner with a view! Located right on the Puget Sound, I highly recommend requesting a table on the patio (during the warm months) where you can hear the waves, observe the ferry and even have a chance of spotting the local whale(s) from a distance! Three of us made a reservation online and were promptly seated outside at 12:30P. Our waiter dropped by and started us off with complimentary warm rolls and whipped butter. We enjoyed the rolls while perusing the menu which featured a variety of entrees, a few specials, soups, salads and appetizers. My dad ordered the CRAB CAKE SANDWICH ($21) which came with a small soup and side salad. The crab cakes looked pretty thin, but he enjoyed his meal. My mom and I shared the APPETIZER TOWER ($45), consisting of three items that you choose from a selection of five options. We chose the blackened shrimp, seared scallops and calamari. The tower seems like a pretty good deal, but the servings were fairly small especially for the prawns and scallops which only included four each. The BLACKENED PRAWNS were extremely savory with a light amount of heat, served with chipotle aioli and grilled focaccia brushed with garlic butter. I loved the PAN SEARED SCALLOPS which came topped with a hearty bacon-onion jam and mango beurre blanc. Too bad this didn't include a couple more! The FRIED CALAMARI was sized reasonably, including a mix of rings, legs and strips. Dip them in the cup of chipotle-lime aioli for a smoky bite. We also each ordered a cup of the CRAB BISQUE ($9) and an entrée-sized SPRING MIX SALAD ($14) to share. They kindly split the salad into two separate plates without us even asking. The crab bisque was rich with a very creamy tomato base, but it could have used more crab. Our salad was a nice medley of greens, carrots, red onion and cucumber. It definitely balanced out the meal. I appreciated how our waiter was so attentive and personable. Despite tending to multiple tables at the peak of lunchtime, he still checked on us a couple times, refilled our water and was very charismatic. Our food was also prepared quicker than expected. Overall, we had a great time and this dining experience was worth the splurge.

Yelp
Ivar's participated in Veganuary! Bravo for them! My dietary lifestyle is whole plant foods. Due to excessive salt, oil & unknown ingredients, eating restaurant food is rare. Ivar's is not somewhere I would step foot into. However, I saw that they participated in Veganuary 2025 and provided a separate menu that had 1 vegan app & 3 entrees. I had the Red Thai Curry that came with flatbread. It was delicious. It would be nice if it were a permanent addition to their menu. My seafood loving husband would love to come here from time to time but he supports me, and we haven't been to Ivar's in at least 6 years. What so many restaurants fail to acknowledge, is that the vegan community is growing, and more and more people are learning about the health benefits of whole plant foods. More doctors are starting to recommend this dietary lifestyle to patients to reverse their chronic health conditions. I gave Ivar's 4 stars because I respect & appreciate their choice to participate in Veganuary & their willingness to give it a shot maybe to see if having a few vegan options would benefit business. The Everett area alone has more than 2,000 consumers (likely many, many more) who don't eat animal products and avoid restaurants that can't offer even a single dish that is free of animal products. I don't know if Ivar's advertised having vegan options in January 2025. Many vegans who would love to support them this month were unaware this was going on. Ivar's may see an influx of people the last week of January now that they know as of 1/24/25. If they choose to keep a few of these items on the menu, I'll change my rating to a 5. If not, then my 4-star rating was just me being too optimistic.

Yelp
Came here for a business dinner. You will love it here as long as you are ok with over $35/plate. We had a very enthusiastic waiter. The views are amazing.

Yelp
This location is great as well with tables over the water and great views! The service was great and the food and drinks as well. We tried the clam chowder in the bread bowl this time but in the end it felt that we had too much bread and also the bottom of the bread bowl gets soggy. The rest of the food was good, the also serve warm bread rolls. They have significant discounts on many items on the menu during happy hour so if you can target that window go for it.
