"We love a good and cheap Mexican meal. Two bucks per taco and four bucks for chips and guac? Sign us up. There’s a reason Taco Tuesday has been an American tradition since 1776. But while taco night is great, there’s something to be said for high end Mexican food that delivers. So we’re going to say a few things about Ixcateco Grill. Ixcateco is a Mexican restaurant on the edge of Irving and Albany Park that offers the best of all worlds. It’s a casual place with nothing casual about the food. We imagine the owner/chef picked up a few things working for Rick Bayless over the years - everything from the delicate ceviche to the hearty rotisserie chicken in a rich mole are great. And don’t forget about dessert, because who could forget about the most important part of any meal - tres leches cake. While the flavors at Ixcateco say elevated dining, the space, price points, and BYOB policy suggest otherwise. It looks and feels like a low-key and laid back operation that you can tell didn’t involve much of an interior design budget. The walls are colorful with a few pieces of artwork, but it’s enough to go along with the food that shines. Portions aren’t huge, but you can order plenty of food without worrying about the bill. If you’re someone who struggles with paying for high priced Mexican food, this is a great spot to expand your horizons without committing to breaking the bank. Ixcateco might not be $2 taco night, but it’s just as good in a different way. Food Rundown Guacamole and Chips Homemade and fresh chips are coming either way, but make sure to get some guacamole with them. Ceviche Tilapia marinated in lime juice, celery, cilantro, serrano chiles, tomatoes, and tomatillos. Light, acidic, and delicious. Picaditas A fried masa canoe base filled with slow roasted poultry carnitas and avocado cream sauce with queso ranchero and pickled cactus. Tastes like fried masa with chicken, but we’re not complaining. Pollo En Mole Negro Great roasted chicken in a black mole with garlic mashed potatoes. Soak all that mole sauce up with everything else on the plate. Langostinos al Ajo Wood grilled prawns served in a garlic sauce with tomatoes, onions, avocado, and garlic over a bed of white rice. These prawns and the rice are soaked in butter, and a lot of it, plus a healthy amount of garlic. It’s really good but you’ll judge yourself hard knowing how much butter is on the rice. Carne Asada Adobo marinated wood grilled skirt steak served in a tomato molcajete sauce with black beans and guacamole. The skirt steak is cooked nicely and the sauce is good, which is a common theme here. Tres Leches Cake Don’t think, just order." - Sam Faye

"Ixcateco Grill, Albany Park. Upscale, authentic Southern Mexican food in a casual BYOB atmosphere by an ex- Topolobampo chef and Rick Bayless protégé? Count us in. Chef Anselmo Ramirez opened Ixcateco in 2015 using locally sourced organic or sustainably raised ingredients resulting in a seasonally changing menu. Moles are the specialties here and the Pollo En Mole Negro is one of our favorites. Great vegetarian options as well and also open for brunch on the weekends."

"Sad news in Albany Park as Ixcateco Grill, the quaint Mexican restaurant from chef Anselmo Ramirez that helped make Albany Park a dining destination, will soon close. Ramírez announced, both via Facebook and in a written statement from a spokesperson, that the last day of service will be Sunday, July 21. The statements didn’t provide the exact reasoning for the impending closure." - Ashok Selvam

I had a great time and delicious dinner here. The octopus salad was outstanding. I ordered the chicken mole and was impressed with the depth of flavor and tenderly cooked chicken. Maybe the best was that we brought our own tequila and ordered their house margarita mix and the server made awesome drinks for us at the table. Speaking of our server, she was fantastic! Friendly, helpful and attentive. The quality of the food was evident and the price accurately reflected the quality, taste and portion size. We ordered dessert to top it off and thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommended.

The queso fundido con chorizo and the octopus salads are incredible here. The mole sauce had a really interesting sweet, salty, bitter combination.

Parking is on the street.Place looks cozy with nice decor. Knowledgeable and polite service. If you would like to have alcoholic beverages you have to bring in your drinks, they do not sell any. Flavors of the dishes were incredible. We enjoyed guacamole as well as beet salad, absolutely yummy! I had salmon which was unbelievably tasty!

As soon as I walked in this establishment, I felt a warm ambience. The servers and the owner are truly kind and nice people that put so much heart into the meals they bring out. I fairly enjoyed the steak meal, which I would highly recommend everyone to try it. Overall, I recommend anyone to go to try genuine Mexican style food.

Based on food quality, there should never be an open table: every bite is amazing. The plates blend traditional flavors with a fun, new twist. It needs a new vibe with it's decor to match the quality of the food but if you're looking for a casual feel during a delicious dinner, go here.

Staff was just amazing. Fantastic atmosphere, and overall a true representation of what a restaurant should be. There was a small wait for the food however it is due to the chef's attention to detail when creating the absolutely amazing food and a beautiful presentation. Definitely would recommend.
