Best Shawarma, Falafel, and Other Middle Eastern Street Food in Seattle | Eater Seattle

"Iyad Alati and Safa Jneidi have built a strong following on Vashon for serving saffron rice, tender lamb, chicken, and vegetarian shawarma (with earthy mushrooms and grilled peppers), out of their small cart near a library. The pair uses locally sourced ingredients with Syrian and Turkish recipes from their home city of Aleppo. Don’t miss the honey-soaked baklava with chopped pistachios and cardamom." - Alana Al-Hatlani

Where to Find the Best Halal Restaurants in Seattle | Eater Seattle

"A trip to Vashon Island for a picnic at the beach is a perfect excuse to visit Iyad’s food cart. There are not many halal options west of the Duwamish, but each week, Iyad travels several hours to ensure that he can provide top-quality halal ingredients to pair his fragrant saffron rice topped with mildly sweet raisin and mushroom lamb shawarma. Visitors are encouraged to check Facebook for Iyad’s hours and specials." - Sabra Boyd

Iyad’s Syrian Grill Serves Middle Eastern Classics on Vashon Island - Eater Seattle

"Iyad’s Syrian Grill is a food cart on Vashon Island, opened by Iyad Alati and Safa Jneidi in April 2019. The cart serves Syrian dishes such as lamb, chicken, and vegetarian shawarma, as well as falafel, salads, and sandwiches. Their recipes have gained popularity among the island’s librarians and other locals. Iyad and Safa incorporate local ingredients with Syrian and Turkish recipes, drawing inspiration from their home city of Aleppo. Despite challenges, the business has remained steady even during the COVID-19 pandemic, with plans to expand to a food truck in Tacoma and eventually a full-fledged restaurant." - Sabra Boyd

Iyad’s syrian grill did a great job. We were a walk up so he didn’t hear us right away, but it was so cool to see him get right into action and start whipping up food on the flat skillet. We were visiting vashon for my brother’s b-day and when the chef asked our business of travel we said it was for his b-day. He paused momentarily and guessed my brother’s age and nailed it! 😂 Really nice guy and service. I got the gyro chicken combo, it’s a little bit of a messy presentation but oh so delicious! 😋 I gave him a 4 star on atmosphere because it is a small grill stand on the side walk which is a little further down the road from the main downtown area. I would suggest driving to his establishment and finding a park near by to sit down and eat. I really hope he can expand to a brick and mortar location in the future.

We so enjoyed meeting Ivad! His food is so delicious. We ordered a full meal and topped it off with his homemade baklava. You won’t be disappointed. This is outdoor eating and most people take it to go. There are picnic tables nearby to eat at.

Wonderful delicious! Portion size more than enough. Had leftovers for later. Every bite was better than the last. New favorite island spot. Super friendly service. You can taste the love he puts into his food.

Google
my family and I came to Vashon just to meet Iyad and try his food! my grandpa is from Syria and it was so sweet to see them interact and connect. the food was incredible and Iyad and his family are so sweet and kind. definitely pay them a visit if you're in the area! it is a food truck so we ate in the park across the street. great vegan / vegetarian option!

We spent 4 days on Vashon and this was the best meal we had- in fact we got food from here twice. The portions were large, the food was fresh and tasted great. We had the falafel meal, the chicken shawarma and the gyro sandwich — all excellent. We’d stop here again on our next trip over!

The quality is mid tier at best for a food truck. It’s food, but not good food or food I particularly enjoyed. It was about $20 with tip for a lamb salad and after a bite or two I just wanted to throw it out despite being hungry. I always eat what I buy but this one isn’t even worth eating. It’s not like the space was that dirty or the food is covered in hair, it just doesn’t taste great and I know I’ll feel like hell after because it’s greasy and covered in gross sauce. I won’t even feed the ample amount I won’t eat to my dog. I’d recommend just continuing to drive into town and get something else for cheaper in a real restaurant. I have no idea how people can say this is the best Syrian food in Seattle , I would say it is probably the worst quality and tasting ever. My only guess is that people never get off the island and there are no other options here for food like this.

Having struggled to find a lot of good Middle Eastern food in the Seattle area, I knew I had to make a stop here while I was on Vashon island, and I am so glad I did. Iyad makes a wonderful gyro combo. The lamb was perfect, the rice was flavorful, hummus was delicious, the spices and seasonings he uses are genuine Levantine imports. The Aleppo baklava had just the right amount of sweetness. Iyad’s kindness and warmth brought to mind the renowned hospitality of alSham region and for those moments that I stopped by his cart, it felt like I was right back home.

Google
The food is ok at best. Spicy sauce was not spicy. Beware of high suggested tips! It's a food truck, not a fancy restaurant, so why do tips start at 20%?

Yelp
I wasn't able to capture the food from this stand because it was so good! The portions were large and the food was very flavorful.

Yelp
Such a great place! The food was authentic and very tasty. The staff was friendly. And there's a cute park across the street where you can sit and enjoy the food. Even my Syrian father-in-law was impressed.

Yelp
The aromatic scents called me in from the road. After a cold day working outside, I needed something warm to eat. I was greeted by a friendly cook who quickly took my order and began prepping my food. Within minutes, I had a hot and delicious gyro in my possession. With nice savory sauces, plenty of lettuce and pickled veggies, and tons of delicious hot lamb, this gyro is the best thing I've had on the island. The pita was warm and fresh which made the pairing of it all that much more enjoyable. You get a decent amount of food for only $11! Enough to share, definitely. I will be back again.

Yelp
I went to a work event yesterday that was catered by Iyad's Syrian Grill. The food was so, so delicious. I tried a little bit of everything (shawarma chicken, gyro sliced lamb, falafel, Syrian rice, Iyad's salad, dolmas, hummus, and more) and loved every last bite. The food was clearly cooked with love. I highly recommend.

Yelp
What a gem!! We stopped here on advice from a friend and I am SO GLAD we did! The people are so nice and friendly, the food was fresh, ready fairly quickly, and absolutely delicious. We got the lamb plate and the shawarma plate, and a box of their desserts, which we devoured! I will eat here every time I come to the island, and I'll tell anyone who'll listen to do the same.

Yelp
While the falafel sandwich was good I'm very disappointed with our treatment from the owner. We were not intending to get food from the cart as we had a reservation at another restaurant but we wanted to support them. He was upset that we bought one sandwich for the 3 of us to share. He was angry when we were putting condiments on our food and said "one sandwich" and kept yelling "bye" several times to get us to leave.

Yelp
From the simple menu you might think you would know what to expect. There are plenty of places around the Seattle area serving gyro/shawarma. This however stands out. In the lamb sandwich I believe I tasted dried mint and sumac but couldn't place what else that made it so unique. I liked the canned/pickled red peppers in it as well and did not expect mushrooms. The sauce is more like a vinaigrette than the thick yogurt and garlic based sauces that I find to be more common at similar restaurants. With that said and the higher proportion of veggies to meat, I have to wonder how this food has been adjusted to suit the palate of Vashon itself. However it happened, which must be quite a story, Vashon is lucky to have them.

Yelp
Some of the best food I have ever had. This little gem of a spot is amazing and Iyad is so kind. Hope to return to Vashon just for this food!

Yelp
The falafel combo and the lamb combo were full of spices and flavor. Hope to try out more of the options here someday.

Yelp
Flavors like you wouldn't believe, everything is simply delicious and an incredibly authentic taste. The plates are wonderfully generous and full of wonderful touches, like the basil and peppers in the salad and the Kaiser sauce. Must try!

Yelp
Delicious! The lamb plate is wonderful. The baklava is outstanding. The family that owns the cart is warm and friendly. We love their food!

Yelp
Hidden gem in Vashon Island! I tried the falafel and lamb meal. SO GOOD! Enough amount of food, sauces, rich flavor, meat was really tender and juicy. Definitely will come back and try more.

Yelp
Unreal food and incredibly nice family. Can't recommend it enough, especially during the farmers market
