J J Fish & Chicken

Food was cooked well, it tasted good, and there was lots of it. Order taker was friendly and kept us up to date on when food would be ready. The takeout only restaurant is lacking. It was basically clean, but it needs a complete upgrade and makeover.

Mohammed was awesome and the food me and my mom had(catfish fillets) was on point. We were not disappointed and I want to make sure that everybody who reads this note, nose, that this J&J place is the place to go if you live anywhere near this area.

ordered fish, Jack Salmon/Whiting, food was fresh cooked but had a funny taste to it, as if it was expiring as it was cooked. Coleslaw was excellent, no drink ordered. Service was fast, in and out in under 15 minutes.

You know why you came. If you are in this area visiting this is a great step on the locals guide for Chicago eats. Super clean, fast and friendly workers. This place takes cards which is a blessing, though there is an ATM on the inside. If you’re looking this place up, you’re familiar with the neighborhood. You’re safe. It’s just the (neighbor)hood. The strawberry cake was ehhh. Outside of that. It’s one of my spots. KD🤎

I will say, this is the ONLY JJ'S Fish I go to..... I absolutely love their food. It's always on point no matter what time I go there. Keep up the great work.

They always take great care of me, been coming for years and Boss man who takes my Jumbo Shrimp dinner orders always remembers with no mistakes

Catfish and 6 piece chicken was amazing. The chicken is better than kfc chicken. Not as crispy but chicken is seasoned to perfection. Also a good amount of food for how much you're paying.

The food here used to be up to par, but now they've decided that the Customer is not to be respected or treated like a paying customer. I ordered A Philly Steak Sandwich Meal, that comes with French fries and a can of soda. What I received was small amount of fries for a meal and the sandwich was beyond belief!! I've added a photo of what I received from them.... It looks as if they smeared some meat on the bread with no toppings! 🫥

Cashier has a nasty attitude every time I come in there she needs to be more polite it's customer service

Door dash order. Fire chicken, crunchy and pull apart tenders with better than average batter. Fries were the way I like: potato-heavy with crispy edges and a decent seasoning. Sauce that came with it was ok, bread needed some jam. Looking forward to trying the catfish, too!

I hadn't been to this JJ Fish and Chicken location in over a decade. I don't usually eat chicken wings or greasy food in general. But I wanted to do a taste test on the wings in preparation for a party I was planning. If I liked the wings then they'd end up on the menu... I ordered pickup via Uber Eats and my order was ready in about 10 minutes. The gentleman behind the counter was pleasant and eager to assist me. My food was also hot and ready to go when I arrived. I ordered the 6 piece (lemon pepper) wing dinner with fries. It also came with cole slaw which I didn't eat. The food smelled greasy and honestly I'd wondered if the grease they'd use was old. I didn't have high expectations, but the food ended up being ok. Nothing spectacular, but decent... The lemon pepper seasoning was a little heavy on the wings, but they were cooked well and tasty. The fries weren't very good though. They were a bit soggy and definitely appeared to have been fried in old grease. Either that or they'd been sitting under a heating lamp. They were edible enough though. Overall, my experience was okay. I might be inclined to go back someday, but the food definitely wasn't party worthy by any stretch of the imagination.

There is such a thing as the Law of Inverse Proportions with respect to fast food. The jankier and sketchier the restaurant, the better the food is. This place is extremely sketchy and if you leave your car here for an hour it's going to get jacked. The fried catfish is fire tho.

Regardless of the area or sketchiness you might have in a certain neighborhood you can not go wrong with JJ's hands down it's good for fried catfish fillets make sure you get lemon pepper and mild sauce. Just to be warned this is not a sitdown restaurant. Do not come expecting to be greeted with a handout menu, make sure you know what you want once you do step up to the window and place your order. You'll be fine!

I've been in Chicago for 14 years now and there are 2 things I learned quickly about the food scene: 1. DONT judge a place by the neighborhood or clientele. The spot could be the best food you ever eat. 2. There are varying degrees of taste, service, and preparation for staples like Harold's Chicken, J&J, and Sharks. It depends on the cooks, so they aren't all hood and they aren't all bad. So do your research on what area/neighborhood Saying all of the, I love the J&J in Beverly on like 108th and Western Ave 60643. I've frequented there for over 13 years and it's always good food. Since COVID the can no longer put lemon pepper on your fish or chicken during preparation so the taste has slightly changed. The owners are very friendly in person but could appear rude on the phone. In chicago everyone is rude so you have to get over that. The taste of the food is great, not greasy, and cooked to order. They could give more coleslaw but if you ask they will throw in another sample size for you. It's good fish and chicken oeriod cooked in fresh oil. Try it - it's worth it!

I decided to try this place since it was coveniently located close to where I am living currently. It is in a super sketch part of Bronzeville (the windows are bulletproof) so I was nervous the entire time I was inside the restaurant. Good thing I ordered ahead so I could just pay and leave. The transaction was quick and easy. I ordered 2 piece perch 3 piece chicken wing dinner with double fries and a piece of red velvet cake. HELLO CALORIES! :) But I have no regrets. The fish were perfectly seasoned and moist, tasted fresh too. The chicken was also perfectly seasoned and juicy. I love the lemon pepper they sprinkle on right before they serve it to you. Gives it a nice zing to the flavor. The fries were average. The toast was blah. They need a better roll instead of a piece of grilled white bread The red velvet cake was STELLAR! I don't think J&J makes the cakes though. Whoever is the owner of Bess Cakes, you are wonderful! Dense, chocolatey, smooth with homemade icing. You could tell there were no box or cans used to prepare the cake. All in all a great experience. Some have complained about sub par "ghetto" service. Realize where you are and judge accordingly. Sorry, the harsh reality.

I ordered from this J&J using Uber Eats. The food was delivered piping hot and delicious. I had a fish and chicken combo. The rest of my party had catfish or shrimp. Everything was good. The shrimp was missing cocktail sauce, but my friend got over it.

Their attitudes are disgusting. They rush you through your order and they cut you off by saying "okay okay". Then when it is two guys cooking and one on register, they will not get the order right because they talk too much and are not focussed on completing the orders correctly, and don't remember what you ask for. Then on top of that when you tell them that your order is wrong they get an attitude and be rude about it.

Good customer service. I fortunately we live in a time where some areas need that security windows between the customers and the staff. These guys are great in informing their customers of any delays. They also let the customer know an approximate time that their food/order will be read.

My "catfish" is shaped like a U-shaped sea urchin :-/ super dense & dry. Not the juicy lemon pepper sprinkled fish I was hoping for. Shan't be returning to this location.

Quick, tasty and easy! Ordered a $5 deal meal of 2 catfish fillets which came with fries and coleslaw. Generous portions and well priced. The other patrons were nice. Great way to buy local and fast fix for dinner.

ok so after I managed to find myself at another adventure ( or misadventure) I saw this fish shack right by the green line station at 43rd I went right into this place and I thought it was one of those remittance places because everything was behind glass. so since I got myself lost already, what the heck might as well go for the goods. I was looking over the menu and the pictures that they have on the walls. everything here is fried heaven! fried catfish, fried shrimps, fried perch, fried chicken and more fried stuff! I went for the fried catfish nuggets for 7 bucks and headed back onto the train. in my seat, i opened up my bagged package of fried goodness! and the catfish nuggets were the most crispiest and flavorful catfish nuggets I have ever tried! and as a bonus, the fries were cooked to perfection. crisp on the outside, soft and real potaoey goodness inside! i wouldn't mind getting lost again one of these days for this kind of real and straightforward food! btw, HUGE portions too! p.s don't complain about the ambience. it's ZERO :)

The best chicken and shrimp combo on the south side! Now if they would take down the bulletproof glass, get rid of loitering, a coat of fresh paint and new floors it MIGHTbe inviting! LOL!!!!
