The 15 Essential Berkshires Restaurants

"Jack’s Hot Dog Stand started in 1917 as a nickel-a-dog operation serving hungry mill workers on their way home. The lunch counter has dished out burgers, hot dogs, and hand-cut fries in its tiny space in downtown North Adams ever since. Servers whirl about behind the counter as they steam, fry, assemble, and wrap your food in front of you with well-practiced movements passed down through decades of operation. Jack’s feels like a monument to a bygone era, a place unstuck from time. Inflation, however, has not forgotten about this little hot dog stand, and you can no longer buy a hot dog for a nickel – unfortunately, you now have to pay $2." - Emma Van Slyck, Stephanie Gravalese

Google
Great not frozen hamburgers on a steamed bun. Hotdogs are proper and served with classic toppings as should be. Great prices!!!

Google
If you are looking for a place with no frills, good food and hard working passionate people behind the counter Jack's Hot Dog stand is it! Simple and classic flattop grill food with unbeatable prices. If you are lucky enough to find an open spot at the counter sit down and enjoy and watch the show unfold. In a small workspace these amazing cooks make fresh food like a beautiful assembly line. Orders continue to roll in from standing behind a full counter, to deliveries online and phone calls coming in. The work never stops and these dedicated cooks work as a team. Kelly is a superhero that wrangles the orders and supports the cooks. Kelly never stops moving and will make sure you are taken care of if you are at the counter or waiting for a take away order.

Google

Google
I loved it! The staff were nice and the food was delicious. Great and convenient place to eat. Would recommend.

Google
This is truly a hidden gem. The food was delicious, the staff were friendly & professional and the atmosphere is warm. Everything we ordered here was delicious and served swiftly. We enjoyed the hotdogs, the pizza wraps and especially the fried pickles. The pickles were especially done right, I highly recommend them. I am looking forward to going back again soon!

Google
It wouldn’t be a trip to North Adams without hitting up Jack’s! The best hotdogs I’ve ever had. I always get the chili cheese dogs and cheese fries. There’s a reason this place has been in business so long. The food is just so satisfying and you can tell it’s homemade.

Google
Hot dogs were just ok. Small, underwhelming . Chili from a can. American cheese on a chili dog? You can pass on this place

John Andrews

Google
Simple, delicious, not even remotely pretentious. Super friendly staff and straightforward comfort food (real cheezwiz!) Small spot but if you can get a spot at the counter it's got quite the nostalgic feel.

Yelp
It was everything I'd hoped it would be. The food, service and ambiance were excellent! Highly recommend.

Yelp
Great value! Great place to have a quick cheap meal. Food here were just alright, nothing special. Quick service.

J R.

Yelp
Very kind and friendly service. Old school ambiance. The hot dogs just aren't good though. It's a flavorless Vienna sausage. Needs more flavor, seasoning, and pop. Sorry, guys. Good luck.

Yelp
I love this kind of place! A true "hole in the wall" unique spot that's been around for quite some time. We stopped by for a couple of hot dogs before going to MASS MoCA after accidentally driving by this place the last time we were in the area. The hot dogs are on the smaller side, so grab a couple! I added cheese and sauerkraut to my dog. There's a small counter area to sit inside but we took ours to go and ate outside. The employees were really efficient and working hard. This is such an affordable little restaurant with a cute vintage feel. The hot dogs were really tasty and the burgers looked good as well. Definitely a small local business I felt good about supporting and a great spot to get a quick lunch before visiting the museum. I need to remember to take a food pic next time, I was so hungry I forgot in this visit!

Yelp
I was looking forward to a good ole hot dog with fries from this place. It's cute, counter service, bring cash, ATM doesn't always work. The hot dog was okay but the fries were just a mush of grease and overcooked potatoes. The people were friendly enough.

Yelp
It is insane how cheap this place is. A no frills hot dog and burger counter that feels like you slipped into a time warp. I would eat here all the time if it was near me.

Yelp
Fun little hot dog counter, with good dogs, plenty of fun fried options, and friendly service. My cheese dog was spot on!

Yelp
Excellent find. Definitely come here for the chili cheese dogs. Great bite to the hotdog. Food was delicious. No wrong choices. Definitely grab a few whoopie pies too. Service was fast. Staff was really nice. Will come back for more.

Jake P.

Yelp
Best hot dog / burger place I've ever been to. I've been there maybe 100 times. But finally today I'm just done with the service in there. One guy who works all the time and basically runs the place is so rude to every customer and every other employee. To the point where just being in there is awkward. I get it you're busy and it's not the most enjoyable job, then get another job. Cuz it's ridiculous how he talks to customers and other employees in there. Funny thing is he'll do the classic thing where he's rude, then tries to save it at the end. Again, 10/10 food, but 3/10 service.

Yelp
A cute little dive with a nostalgic service counter, no-frills. Got hot dog, and french fries. and both were good will return if ever back in the area. Highly recommend.

Chris H.

Yelp
Great prices feels like the 90's. Food is amazing here. Place is always packed but the staff knows what they are doing!!!

Tom T.

Yelp
Great little hot dog stand tucked into a small side street and frequented by the locals. Stopped by for lunch today and it was delicious. Chili cheese dog was spot on. The home cut fries were hot, fresh and absolutely outstanding. Sign me up! Note to owners: You can charge more...
google avatar

John T.

Yelp
The price of their hot dogs has gone way up and honestly, I don't think the taste is better at all. I highly recommend if you are constipated and need a good clean out. Service is always good. But again, prices could be a lot better.

Yelp
We came into town to see the fall colors and found Jack's on Yelp. Decided to swing by after checking it out there and on trip advisor. The place is totally a hole in the wall (and the bathroom for sure is!) but you go here to get some great tasting, cheap food prepared by hard working, hustling humans. The prices couldn't be beat - $2.60 for chili cheese fries? A pulled pork sandwhich for $3.00? A double double cheeseburger for $3.50? Me, the wife, our 6 year old and our 10 month old all feasted for $25. We got the meal to go ($25 for all of the above plus a hotdog, hamburger, fries, popcorn chicken, and onion rings and mac n cheese) since there was no indoor seating and a limited amount of outdoor seating and took it to nearby (1.5 miles away) Historic Valley Park where there was a lake view and plenty of picnic tables plus a playground for the kid. Almost everything was great. Chili cheese fries were delicious and quickly consumed, onion rings were crispy and perfectly cooked, pulled pork didn't skimp on the pork and came topped with an onion ring. The double double cheeseburger was like In-N-Out but better. Everything else was good - only downsides (minor) were the plain fries had been in the frier a little too long and were dark, and the hot dog was tiny. Fries were excusable as they were slammed the entire time I was there with multiple walk ins, delivery orders and take out orders. I was prepared to the small dog (and you should be also, order two or more). Definitely give them a shot if you're passing through (if you're a local, it's already probably part of your routine!) - your stomach and your wallet will thank you.

Yelp
Great place for a quick little bite. Awesome prices and good quality food. We had a chili cheese dog and burger, chili fries, and onion rings and they all tasted great. Plus a drink and we spent less than $20. We chatted with the workers a bit as well and they were incredibly friendly. We will certainly be and back and definitely recommend!

Yelp
Great locals' favorite .. excellent little hotdogs.. two of us at 9 plus fries .. add any toppings, eat in or to go both offered.

Virginia G.

Yelp
Awesome food fast fresh and cheap Great atmosphere with good people. You can sit in there but not a lot of seats but so worth it. Call ahead and place your order
google avatar

Angela K.

Yelp
This place seems frozen in time! From the interior to the prices, it's definitely an original spot that brings you back to another era. The food itself was quite greasy but it was a nice experience to try once!
google avatar

Yelp
This is an iconic, small restaurant with a simple menu of burgers & hot dogs at a great price. It's been in business for a very long time. You can't go wrong stopping at Jack's!

Yelp
Crazy to think this restaurant is over a century old. When it opened, north adams was a bustling industrial town, WWI ("the great war" at the time) hung on the nation's mind, and just down the street wasps at Williams were still active members of the KKK (oh wait that was still true in 1981, but now...). I went with my Chinese friend and we got some stares but I think the people are generally friendly in a small-town Berkshire county way. The other customers talked story with the people behind the cashier, evidently a few knew the old owner. Anyway, the menu here is simple and astonishingly cheap. They ask you what toppings you want--I didn't know what they had so I asked what was good and ended up getting chili, cheese, and onions. The fries were nice and crisp and the hotdog did what it needed to do. The chili and cheese were a tasty combo, but just the historic nature of this restaurant and it's cheap prices make this piece of small town America a place to check out.

Thomas R.

Yelp
Good food at a good price. The fries are to die for. The whoopee pies are also good and a good dessert.

Yelp
I went here for the first time. New to the area. I have never - NEVER-- had a juicier, tastier, well cooked and tastefully garnished hamburger. Next time I'm going to eat at the counter because the place just emanates A vibe that makes you want to stay. So delighted I discovered this place. AND the service was super friendly

Yelp
Hard to complain about a hot dog stand. I've been to hot dog places all over the US which are supposedly famous (as Jack's is for being almost 100 years old and a local institution) ... Coney Island in Worcester, Nathan's in the REAL Coney Island, NY System in RI, Ben's Chili Bowl in DC, Pinks in LA, Hot Dog Johnny's in NJ ... and I'll let you in on a little secret. A fucking hot dog is a hot dog!!! I don't care what food network douches like Guy Fierri will blabber. One hot dog is pretty much the same as another! This place serves hot dogs, burgers and chili fries. The staff is gruff and belligerent in a charming way, it's dingy looking and a total dive. You'd never go in here to eat if it wasn't so well known. They take only cash. It's always pretty crowded and there never seems to be enough seating. Pretty much standard M.O. for any dicey hot dog joint. Are the hot dogs special? No. They are on the small side, a bit shriveled and taste like something you'd buy at a concession stand at a little league field. Nothing amazing about the food. It's the fact that the history is there. Literally everyone I spoke with in a 5 mile radius had a story about how growing up in North Adams they met their future wife there, hung out with best friends or came after some big game, etc. That's what makes this spot special. Don't come here expecting some amazing hot dog better than any you've ever tasted. They're good but nothing amazing. When you have a cheap meat product made out of lips and assholes like most hot dogs probably are, you really can't get something beyond the pale. It's a cheap, solid eat. And that's that.
google avatar

Nick C.

Yelp
Great service and the food was very well-priced and served fast. Lots of options for toppings which was a fun plus. Good spot for a small bite!
google avatar

Dina M.

Yelp
I just don't understand why people love this place so much. I was mildly disappointed with the chili cheese dogs. Most places use a warm gooey cheese, however, this place decides to slap a literal slice of cold American cheese on the inside of the bun, slap a hot dog in it, than pour chili on it, I mean, no self respecting person uses an actual slice of american cheese for chili cheese dogs. It made it taste so gross, like all I was biting was a cold slice of cheese with some chili and a dog on it. Yuck, no thank you
google avatar

Lisa F.

Yelp
Love this place! Very old school. The food is great. The price is right. It was fun to sit at the counter and watch people come in, order, eat, order more, visit a bit. And across the street is a resale shop run by the owners sister. Small town atmosphere for sure. I got the chili dog and it was superb. We also got fries which were perfect old style..crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Perfectly seasoned. Would definitely go here again!
google avatar

Kevin E.

Yelp
If you're in north Adams this is a must stop. Prices are fantastic. Little old time hot dog shop. Wish I was closer as it would be a weekly pop into for sure Been coming here since the 70's when I was just a boy now I stop anytime I'm in the area.

Yelp
Great find. Thank you Yelp! During a recent drive down the Mohawk Trail we decided against packing a picnic lunch due to the rainy forecast. So we found ourselves in North Adams with empty bellies wondering where to eat. Jacks was great. A limited menu - hot dogs, burgers and fries. Grilled hotdogs. Not boiled. A cheese dog was wrapped in a slice of American cheese - none of that fluorescent orange stuff! The chili on the chili dog was super yum. I was a tad disappointed that they didn't have fresh chopped onions available. Fries were thick cut and crispy. The jalapeño cheese tater tots were flavored that way - not tatertots done up like nachos. And you can't go wrong with the pricing. You can walk out full for under $5.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
If you are looking for great food at a reasonable price and want to enjoy it at a try American lunch counter, then look no further that Jacks.

Benjamin M.

Yelp
My wife and I came here after riding the Berkshire Scenic train for my birthday. Admittedly, this place is a small hot dog stand and some might call it a "dive." I wouldn't go so far as to characterize it as a dump, though. I love hot dogs and other simple pleasures, and when we got stools at the bar I couldn't wait to try their food. We ordered their trademark hot dogs (several, I don't mind admitting) and fries and really made a pig of ourselves. The place was popular even on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, and I felt bad for the people standing behind us in line waiting for us to finish so that they could grab our seats. This place seems to have been around forever and oozes charm, and the stench of greasy hot dogs. It was great.
google avatar

Molly A.

Yelp
Delicious hot dogs! Quick service. Mask wearing is variable (saw it all - mask, nose out, no mask). But we were in and out pretty quick.

Eshta A.

Yelp
Super excited to come here! Made a plan for right after MassMoCA. It is really small and charming and uh....full of customers without masks. We fully expected to see them being admonished but nope! That place is the size of a hallway and no options for eat on so there is no excuse. Very lax in safety. Pretty disappointed.
google avatar

Moe B.

Yelp
When in North Adams, eschew the new frou frou establishments spawned by MassMoCa and visit the one place that reflects what it really means to be in rumpy old North Adams. Order up 3 chili dogs with mustard and onions, a soda, drop a sawbuck on the counter, and leave contented.
google avatar

Clifton P.

Yelp
This place is far too highly rated for what it is. Most importantly the quality of meats was very low.. This is definitely corporate frozen meat. The rolls were cheap enriched flour junk. We sampled most of the menu between all of the diners in our troupe. While the staff were friendly enough ithey were engaged in personal chatter the entire time we were there. And finally the cost adds up quickly so I wouldn't even say this place was cheap. Especially given the extreme low quality this place is no value. We were super disappointed given the high number of stars. My guess is the staff have been busy setting up fake accounts and leaving good reviews. Definitely won't be back next time in town

Barbara M.

Yelp
Excellent French fries, fresh hot dog and burger rolls, not to mention delicious meats. Quaint small business big on taste and friendliness. Very happy we stopped in.

Mary B.

Yelp
Tim and I went there for the first time today. Chili dogs, fries and fried pickles were great. We will go back to try other menu items. Thank you for the great food and service!!
google avatar

Stephanie W.

Yelp
When you have those few items down to perfection... why add anything else? My boyfriend is from Adams, and upon our first visit to his home town, it wasn't even a question in his mind that we HAD to go to Jack's... and ever since, any visit to Adams... I request we go here! The hot dogs and hamburgers are cooked to perfection... nothing fancy done to them... which is what I love. Why change what's already great? The items seem smaller than expected, so order more than you would at other establishments [but I guarantee, even ordering extra, you'll still pay less by a landslide than one at any other place]. Prices are great. People are super nice... and the food is on point for the classic hot dog/hamburger love we all have!

Sam F.

Yelp
Best place to eat lunch in North Adams. It feels like you've gone back in time 100 years when you step in but the food is great and the prices probably haven't changed in 50 years.
google avatar

L C.

Yelp
I liked this place, good comfort food but It usually is sooooo cramped, you pretty much don't fit, and than there is no A/C whatsoever, so be ready to sweat your ass off. I recommend you order take out and just eat it in your car!!
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
Came here twice while staying around the corner over the weekend. Both times we ordered one chili dog and one with mustard and onions. The hot dogs are delicious, inexpensive, and made quickly to order. I even bought a cute hat with their hotdog mascot on it. Staff is really nice and very efficient with everything. Would love to come back and try everything!

Arthur L.

Yelp
The food is ok. It's definitely not bad but it's debatably worse for you than fast food. INSANE amounts of grease and that's probably still an understatement. DO NOT put the take out bag on your car seat, couch cushion or even your lap as the bag is faithfully deeply saturated and will ruin any cloth it comes in contact with
google avatar

Michael N.

Yelp
Same great taste as it was in the 80s when I went to college at NASC!! Very happy to see and taste that the great tradition has continued!!
google avatar

Nickolii Y.

Yelp
Good hardy greasy food that hits the spot every time no h.mo. I enjoy the onion rings and everything burger. I hear the chocolate milk is good also. Price went up a lot this year but it's good quality eating in a fast time frame.

Alissa H.

Yelp
This was one of my highlights of the town! Such great food at a great price. Would recommend to anyone visiting town or stopping through!
google avatar

Ken F.

Yelp
Every time I come near the city of North Adams Massachusetts I have to stop at this little local gem. The food is fantastic! The prices are ridiculously reasonable! The chili dogs are fantastic! I always get a double double cheeseburger and it's so juicy and delicious! Good french fries good onion rings and an old-time chocolate milk dispenser to boot! It's a very small place with only about 8 to 10 seats but that's what gives it its charm. These kinds of little old-fashioned restaurants are disappearing from the modern landscape every day and I'm glad they haven't changed a thing. Keep doing a great job at supplying the public with good old-fashioned food at reasonable prices. Thank you!

Keith M.

Yelp
The burger was decent value but overdone/tough. Buns were soggy and weiners were not snappy. On par with Teo's of Pittsfield, except no bar. Good value for money but thoroughly average food.
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Old-school North Adams awesomeness. It's downright historical, people. But only if you can stop worrying about your cholesterol to enjoy your inexpensive hot dogs and burgers. Order plenty, because portions are small -- but that's what keeps it cheap. The tiny counter and greasy-spoon vibe is the stuff that the soul of North Adams is made of. If you're an organic-only, gluten-glitchy foodie type, nah. Not for you. But if you appreciate the scrappy local history of this town, belly up to the counter and make sure you get your hot dog with tons of sauerkraut.
