Best Barbecue Restaurants in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"Jalapeño Bucks is a cult-favorite barbecue joint tucked into an orange grove in Mesa. The setting is simple: gravel lot, picnic tables, and a converted shipping container housing the kitchen. The kitchen smokes brisket, ribs, and pork butts over pecan wood. These meats fill sandwiches, quesadillas, burritos, and more. Many people come for one of the Valley’s iconic barbecue dishes: a half pound of brisket on a sandwich with peanut butter and jelly. Anchored by homemade salsas and house-fried tortilla chips, Jalapeno Bucks presents a compelling version of Arizona barbecue that feels original." - Chris Malloy

Upon delivering a trailer we borrowed, we asked if there was a place he recommended to have breakfast. Jalapeño Buck's was just down the way. As curious as I was and the onset of being "hangry" was slowly approaching, I reluctantly ordered the 1/4 pound pb&j brisket sandwich. You read that right, peanut butter and jelly brisket. Who knew! The second I took a bite, that peanut butter melted into my mouth followed with that sweet jelly pushing its way at the corner of my mouth. Brisket was tender and tenderized just right for that combination to work. Did I mention the BUNZ! Toasted to perfection. Delicious 😋 Definitely a place I'm recommending. ❤️

Google
Under construction. New employees? I heard so many good things about this place. It really did not deliver. 45 minute wait to get food. So many people were waiting. I should have just left. Brisket Bean and Cheese lacked much. Next to no cheese and very little brisket. I don't what it was but I am not interested in trying again.

As a longtime customer, I wanted to take a moment to leave a review for newer employee Elya. Last month I stopped by for a quick dinner and Elya was so kind and friendly. She truly went above and beyond with her customer service and provided great tips which led me to try the ribs for the first time ever (I'm usually a brisket sandwich or burro girl). Elya even checked on me through the window when the line quieted and asked how I liked everything. The ribs melted like butter and the mac salad was on point as always.

Google
Surprised at how good their food was, the parking lot was under construction, people were extremely friendly and helpful. Customers weren't leaving even with the long Saturday night line. Definitely would go again.

Google
This is a great little BBQ shop in NE Mesa. I recently went for the first time and it was so good. The Christmas burrito was really good (get it double wrapped) and the PB&J BBQ Brisket sandwich was unique and pretty good! The Brisket seemed a little dry, but the sandwich was good! Worth the stop!

I recently visited Jalapeño Bucks, and it was an extraordinary experience that I can't wait to share. Nestled in the heart of Queen Creek, this spot is a hidden gem for anyone who loves delicious, flavorful food with a bit of a kick. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted with a warm and friendly atmosphere that set the tone for the entire visit. I ordered the Brisket, Egg, and Cheese Burrito, and it was nothing short of spectacular. The brisket was tender and flavorful, with a smoky richness that perfectly complemented the fluffy scrambled eggs and gooey melted cheese. The combination was wrapped in a fresh, warm tortilla that held everything together beautifully without overpowering the flavors inside. Each bite was a delightful blend of textures and tastes that left me craving more. What really stood out to me was the quality and freshness of the ingredients. It's clear that Jalapeño Bucks takes pride in sourcing the best possible products for their dishes. The brisket was cooked to perfection, with a melt-in-your-mouth quality that is hard to find. The eggs were light and fluffy, and the cheese added just the right amount of creaminess to balance out the other flavors. The service was equally impressive. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, making sure that my order was just right and checking in to see if I needed anything else. Their genuine enthusiasm for the food they serve is infectious and adds to the overall positive experience. In addition to the outstanding food and service, the atmosphere at Jalapeño Bucks is vibrant and welcoming. It's a great place to relax and enjoy a meal with friends or family. Whether you're a local or just passing through Queen Creek, I highly recommend stopping by Jalapeño Bucks for a memorable dining experience. Five stars all the way!

Google
The bean burrito was huge and stuffed with beans & cheese. The brisket sandwich tho….. one of the better ones we’ve had in a while. Better than any brisket we ate in Texas. It was tender and juicy either nice bark. Grab a pint of the spicy green salsa when you’re there, you won’t be disappointed ! Highly recommend.

Google
I had heard about how great this place is and I will admit the burrito I ordered was good, but the chopped brisket I ordered was sliced thin and was not tender at all. The wait time to order was about 15 minutes and then took another 30 minutes to get my food. Once I noticed several people, more than 6, who ordered after me received their food, I checked to make sure they had my order. I got attitude and was promptly told that all orders are served in order.

Ernest M.

Yelp
We got a half pound pulled pork sandwich and a brisket bean and cheese burrito and thought I will get it deep fried that's an extra $4 bucks but sounds good. It takes 30 mins to get are food. The pulled pork was good but the burrito was soggy and just covered in oil so not good, and to have to pay $4 bucks. Not happy about that but hungry so had half of it and could not do anymore. It's going to take some time before I go back to this place. 30 mins to wait for two things on the menu and to have it not be cooked right as well pay extra.

Yelp
Still my favorite stop in az jalapeño bucks is so legit. And offers items that nobody else does 3 eat bean and cheese burrito. I don't even like bean ands cheese burrito but I love this one. Crave it all the time. Gooey cheeseyy flavorful. Nobody can duplicate this. Pro tip make sure you let it cool before trying. It needs to settle a bit or else it's too hot and messy Pbj Briscuit sand which. Sounds awful but taste amazing. It just works. In so many ways. 10 out of 10 I order this every time I come Parking sucks. Out of the way but I still make it here no matter what

Yelp
We happened to stop by Jalapeño Bucks on the way back home and I wish this place was closer because we would be there often! It was so good! There are a few tables outside and no indoor seating so this is a grab and go place in the thick of summer. The service was quick and we put it our order at the window and it was ready within 10 minutes or so. We got 2 bean and cheese burritos, a 3 way burrito which had red pork, green beef, beans and cheese and a greenie beanie. We did also get a side of potato salad. The bean and cheese burritos were good, nothing super exciting. The star was that greenie beanie burrito, the flavor on it was so good and these burritos are HUGE! Like 2 people can definitely eat off of one and the prices are super reasonable for what you get. The potato salad was actually so good as well. I will definitely grab more of that and try their other salads and mango salsa next time. Definitely a good stop for food!
google avatar

Julian E.

Yelp
So I have only been here about 20 times and remember every time why I keep coming back. Today I got the 3 way burrito and again it was amazing. This thing is a hefty nice size and the amount of flavor that's packed in it makes it my favorite around. The beans have a light smokiness that climbs into your soul and is complemented by all that meat goodness. There is a ton of cheese too, every single bite had melted cheese in it. You can see in the pic the amount of cheese. This restaurant is fat person approved.
google avatar

Michael E.

Yelp
Flavors strong, and distinct. Was a bit messy and full. Staff were helpful and welcoming. Outdoor eating had a bit of flys but was a nice out. Good stop after a ride

Yelp
From an Arizona native: Jalapeño Buck's is such a valley gem. Across the board, food is fantastic. Super sloppy to eat, but everything is delicious. My husband got the brisket sandwich (with jalapeños and honey mustard sauce) and said it might be the best brisket sandwich he's had in Arizona (he has had many). The green chile beef burrito is delicious (a tad floppy) but super filling and tasty. Service is good, fun to sit outside on an easy going day (they have misters under the shade). Pretty good bang for your buck, no pun intended.
google avatar

Loren A.

Yelp
Super huge fan of this spot. I've been going since 2016 and literally everything I've had on the menu is amazing! Wish they had more locations. Keep it up
google avatar

Alex L.

Yelp
It's nice to live nearby a great bbq place with alot of offerings and a citrus market. The brisket, bean, and cheese or egg burrito is my go-to on the weekends. The bbq sauce that comes with is mild and flavorful. Great for large parties with outdoor seating only.
google avatar

Matthew M.

Yelp
Been visiting, jalapeño bucks for a very long time, I absolutely love this place. The first thing I tried was the peanut butter brisket, which was phenomenal. Another one of my absolute favorites is the brisket bean and cheese burrito. Has such an awesome smoky flavor. I don't think I've ever had anything there that I didn't like. The service is always great. The people that work there are awesome. It's a beautiful little shack that used to be in the middle of nowhere which I absolutely love because now they are surrounded by housing that probably shouldn't be there. The orange groves are gone, the feel of small town is gone, but this place is a one of a kind and a hidden gem . Give this place a try you will absolutely love it.
google avatar

Babu G.

Yelp
This place was a pleasure surprise to visit for anyone who wants to get an amazing burrito! I came here during lunch and let me tell u it's super packed! That's how u know the spot is going to hit! Went in line and ordered and didn't have to wait too long considering the amount of people! And got the burrito combo plate, with 3 layer burrito and potato salad. The salad was amazing and a bit more sweet that I am use to, but my god the burrito is huge! It was completely loaded and worst the price! Only thing I wish was the misters were turned on as it was scorching hot outside as there is no shade when standing in line.
google avatar

Chrispin C.

Yelp
I don't even look for other places anymore this one has everything I want in a BBQ meal
google avatar

King P.

Yelp
Better customer service. No bathrooms we kept asking if we can use there restrooms and they said they dnt have any. When clearly they had two restrooms there but they didn't want to open it. Then asked if they can cut the sandwich and they said no it's a sanitation thing they can't. Food was ok not the best. Will be my last time here
google avatar

Aaron F.

Yelp
It was a 118 degree day and I decided to try Jalepeno Bucks for the first time. I love burritos from the pork shop and let me tell you, these burros are big. Don't order two...
google avatar

John W.

Yelp
Brisket was amazing got the sandwich and the brisket bean and cheese burrito and that might have been one of the best burritos ever.

Bruce O.

Yelp
What a disappointment. I've going going there for years. They must have gotten too proud of themselves because the food has slipped. Obviously, like all restaurants the prices have risen. And that would be ok (to some extent) if the quality hadn't deteriorated. The brisket was tough and had very little flavor. The sauce didn't help because it was watery and also had no taste. I may be in a minority because the placed was jammed at lunchtime on a Thursday. But for me, it's no longer worth a drive from Queen Creek.

zack l.

Yelp
First timer trying jalapeño bucks. Bought 2 green chili shredded beef burritos. While eating one I found small metallic pieces in the burrito. Possibly aluminum foil? Very unfortunate flavors were great until I came across the small metallic pieces. Tossed both burritos away.
google avatar

Shaun V.

Yelp
Food was what ever they use yesterdays Burnt ends mixed with today's burnt end you'll get some nice juicy ones and then you'll get these beef jerky ones spend $30 on some burnt ends and some rice and beans. Little ridiculous for what you get. I'd never refer anyone to go here. I'd rather spend the 14 to 16 hours smoking my own 17 lb brisket. Be happy with the outcome over that
google avatar

Jon H.

Yelp
I ate the Buck out of this place, it's so Bucking good!!! It's definitely my new Buck Buddy...love it! I'm of the belief that you can make anything into a burrito...it's my favorite food group. Love so many things about this spot...the location, the storefront, outdoor seating only, smoky bbq smells, the burritos are phenomenal, the people are super friendly, everything! I went with the brisket, egg and cheese burrito and added refried beans to it. Loved every bite and was sad when it was gone. But I'll hit this again....but I'll probably wait a few days so I don't seem desperate. On a scale of 1 to 10, I love this place!
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
The brisket enchiladas are my favorite! We love the mango salsa and mac salad. When we have friends and family in town we love to take them there as it is unique with the barbecue brisket burritos. So good! It is fun to eat out side at the picnic tables when the weather is good.
google avatar

Bryan G.

Yelp
Burnt ends and PBJ brisket sandwich were very good. Sauces are not what one might expect for BBQ but had good flavor. The refried beans were good as well. The ambiance is very minimalist but works.)

Cristy M.

Yelp
The service continues to be unfriendly and the barbecue taste like kerosene. I continue to give this business a chance but after the third time, I no longer will eat at this establishment. For good barbecue head over to Joe's or Caldwell's. You'll enjoy it much more and the service will be more friendly.
google avatar

Amber G.

Yelp
First of all I do not know why YELP keeps directing me to these cool places and they are all outdoors and it's July!!! Ugh it's so hot out today. But i have wanted to try this place for so long. NO RESTROOMS! What kind of establishment doesn't provide restrooms? The food is so messy you can't even wash your hands. Full disclosure on the food- I am not huge on BBQ, I like it but, it's never been my favorite. The portions are huge, but so are the prices. Almost $19 for a sandwich. Got the PB&J brisket sandwich, it tastes good I give taste 4/5. The PB&J (grape) tastes so unique with the brisket. Like the concept. BUT WHERE IT GOES WRONG- the bread was so soggy.....it was disgusting. I don't know if it's because the brisket is so greasy..... but you can barely pick up this mush. The brisket egg and cheese- HUGE- couldn't even finish it. But it would be so much better if they chopped up the brisket. Nothing was mixed, you're either getting a bite of just meat or a bite of egg and cheese (unless you have a huge mouth). Then when I bite into it I get a lot of chewy pieces. Ya this place isn't for me. The mango salsa was a 10/10 The coleslaw was good and I hate coleslaw Mac salad was good
google avatar

Bonnie F.

Yelp
If you're looking for Authentic Mexican food in an outdoor atmosphere, THIS IS THE PLACE!! We brought our friends from out of town here and had a Great Experience!! Yummy food too!! It's a Hidden Gem! We had fast friendly window service as well!!

Nathan V.

Yelp
This place has such a laid back vibe and I am here for it. Best brisket I have had in Arizona. It's a true hole in the wall of a place but in a great area right off the highway and the service is always great. They do have outdoor seating if you want to eat there. If you're looking for a good BBQ spot in Mesa this is it!
google avatar

Sebastian C.

Yelp
This place was so good!!! 10/10 recommend to everyone who loves a good pulled pork sandwich. First time coming here and I will definitely come back and recommend to my friends and family. Service was quick and the employees are super nice. This place is just overall such a great vibe
google avatar

Kelly B.

Yelp
OMG. The peanut butter and jelly brisket. Enough said. But because I need more words for this review, I'll add that they also have great chips and salsa. I want to go back and try the burritos. Everything looks so delicious.
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
I used to live right around the corner and moved away 5 years ago....I still am craving this place. The BEST burritos in town. You can't go wrong with getting the standard green burrito or my newer favorite the brisket bean and cheese. They have the best sauces. This is my only regret of moving out of the north Mesa area. I love these guys and miss it when they would answer the phone and said hey Jennifer, the usual?
google avatar

Bill G.

Yelp
Awesome lunch spot. Great to stop in and get a bite. Had the brisket sandwich. Get some salsa on the side, and it is awesome! Normal BBQ counter with outdoor seating. Don't go here if you expect anything else. Service is good, no complaints.
google avatar

Bill G.

Yelp
Loved the food. Actually some of the best food I've had. It's miles from nowhere but there's an old saying that, if you have a product that people love, they will come, wherever you are.
google avatar

Kimberly S.

Yelp
Jalapeño bucks is amazing. The 3-Way Burrito is absolutely amazing! The perfect combination of flavors and textures makes it a standout dish. Every bite is packed with deliciousness, and the portions are generous. Whether you're craving something hearty or just want the ultimate comfort food, this burrito hits the spot every time. Highly recommend--5 stars!

Philip J.

Yelp
Loving both Mexican and BBQ I was a little uncertain how well the two would come together, but the dishes had a great flavor and were very filling.
google avatar

Stefano D.

Yelp
Great road side brisket spot. It's like a food truck without the wheels. Brisket is killer. Try the FRIED brisket, egg, and cheese burrito. No toilets so come prepared. Will definitely be back when in town. Close to the Boeing plant so ideal for lunch. Quick service.
google avatar

Lisa S.

Yelp
Great service. Great food. Big servings. Friendly staff. Really high recommendation for the Arizona que that they serve.
google avatar

Tajia P.

Yelp
Best place for brisket sandwich's! The pb and j brisket sandwich is also so good but I usually split it with someone. Ribs are fall off the bone and cont go wrong with any burrito you get. They have great mango salsa and chips
google avatar

James S.

Yelp
OMG so good! A true iconic BBQ must taste establishment in Arizona. Seating is no thrill bench style outside only in the AZ heat... but man the food is great! An odd or unlikely favorite is their macaroni salad! It goes well with whatever you order!!!
google avatar

Paola M.

Yelp
Barely heard of this place & I cannot believe how much I was missing out on! I drove about 40 min to try this place & it was definitely worth the drive. I got the 1/4 pulled pork sandwich the meat was tender & soft & the bun makes it even better . I also had their green chili beef burrito & that also had an amazing taste not too spicy but a good spice the beans and cheese were slightly melted. The service was actually pretty fast and the ambiance was nice, ate outside and it was just perfect. Definitely will be back.
google avatar

Charles S.

Yelp
After seeing an article pop up in my newsfeed this morning I decided to check it out. I found exactly what the article said a cozy country style barbecue place in Mesa. Just a shack with great barbecue and burritos! I had the Wicked Sister Sandwich and was not disappointed, every bite was an explosion of flavors and taste. I will be back there is much more on the menu to explore.
google avatar

Aubrey F.

Yelp
Jalapeño Bucks, you have my heart forever! Delicious food, great service. We've tried many things on the menu but always go back to the brisket. Brisket quesadilla, brisket sandwiches- it's all fantastic. Special shout out to the pb&j brisket sandwich, it's 10/10. They offer a casual dining experience with plenty of seating. We have ordered out several times and it's always been consistent. Staff is friendly and prices are reasonable for the portions. Eat here if you're looking for good bbq, you will not be disappointed!

Adam G.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I had ordered the 3 way burrito a brisket enchilada plate with side of macaroni salad the 1/4 pound beef brisket sandwich as well as a pint of rice and two cokes. Was really happy with pricing and the way the food looked and tasted. Cashier had forgot our pint of rice but ended up getting a free giant bag of chips and side salsa, honestly made me so glad she forgot to put that rice in the bag. definitely a far drive but good food and friendly service not the best place to eat but not hard to take Togo. Definitely worth trying, we will be back! Better than most generic bbq places around Az.
google avatar

Steve T.

Yelp
Finally got around to coming here. Pasted by before and always had a line and in a rush. Good to pre-order if you have a large order or don't want to wait 30mins. Overall like the outdoor window serve atmosphere. Ordered my favorite green chili with the shredded burrito. Was feeling a little hungry so made it a plate with rice and beans with my choice salad (potato). Burrito was good I liked it, could use some other things inside like cabbage or lettuce for some texture. Rice and beans I was disappointed with the quantity, felt like 2 tablespoons of each. Rice wasn't flavorful but cooked good. Beans were ok can't mess that up. Potato salad was really good, like with there's relish and light mustard mmmm. Overall not too bad for what's in the area. Would try the bbq next time I'm around there
google avatar

Sadie A.

Yelp
Green chile brisket burrito. That is the key to happiness at jalapeño bucks. It's sooo good. Just try it.
google avatar

Kenzie V.

Yelp
The food was amazing, and I recommend trying their green salsa with some chips. I do with the lady at the window was a little more friendly, but other than that this place was a 10/10
google avatar

Michael A.

Yelp
I love this place we have had the pulled pork sandwiches, burnt ends, ribs, but our favorite is the red chili burrito! It has the perfect level of spice but note if you get it with beans and cheese you do get noticeably less meat. The store next door offers fresh citrus fruits and local honey. It is an all outdoor seating area and keep in mind there is no restroom for customers. Worth making a trip out.
google avatar

Gina P.

Yelp
Love the brisket sandwich and bean and cheese brisket burrito. The sandwich portion is consistent but sometimes my burrito feels like small. Great food and a fun take out or place to eat outdoors.
google avatar

Marcy L.

Yelp
The best hidden gem in Mesa-- that ironically everyone knows about! I have met people from all over when I stop in. It's tucked away in a really cool farm stand with picnic tables and 2 windows for ordering and takeout. I could rave about basically every one of their dishes! My favorite that I go back to is the pulled pork quesadilla! ALL of their sauces are SOOO delicious-- and I'm picky about sauces! I also absolutely love love LOVE their mango salsa. The best part, you can always feel great about going here, knowing you are supporting a local family-owned business!
google avatar

Brandon M.

Yelp
Always amazing burritos! This place has the best food and best service! Salsa is amazing too! Because their food and service is so good there is always a line so be prepared.

Yelp
Jalapeño Buck's has been on my longtime bucket list! With their specific hours, I finally had an opportunity to give them a visit! They're closed on Sundays and Mondays and open from 10 AM - 6 PM or 7 PM the rest of the week. So unless you're in the area, not the most flexible hours. That being said, I decided to snag a late lunch bite from them this week. They're a BBQ Mexican fusion type joint. , featuring exclusively outdoor seating (no animals allowed), no restroom and walk up counter service. They have a fun shack like vibe with lots of cool signs, but overall limited amenities, but then again, you're going for the food! Or should be! The girl who took my order was very sweet. I knew ahead of time from perusing the menu and reviews that I was going to get the brisket, bean and cheese burrito - The cashier let me know it was a solid and popular choice. She ran me through all their salsa options: A spicy red, a verde type, a more like forward creamy green, a mango and a classic mild red. I did also get a side of guacamole, was pretty disappointed it was prepackaged and expected something made in house, but alas still nice they have it. The burrito was very good! Quite hefty, super smoky and tender brisket. I added pickled jalapeños, overall quite a delicious, but heavy and trick burrito. I loved all the salsas. Would probably opt for spicy red, creamy green and mango as personal favorites. I definitely am glad I made it there, would visit again, but with the limited hours, may not be there in the immediate future. I understand why people enjoy it so much and definitely want to try some of those burnt ends on my next visit!

Sydney S.

Yelp
The PBJ Brisket sandwich was such a unique concept and I loved it. It was a bit of a drive so I may not come back unless in the area but it was a really cool concept, with good tasting food. The people at the counter were super nice!

Yelp
Food is great. I love the pulled pork Service is on point Ambiance is as good as the food. It's a charming lil spot that still exists nestled in the orange groves What a great spot to enjoy lunch Get there early. Everyone loves it.
