Best Barbecue Restaurants in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"Jalapeño Bucks is a cult-favorite barbecue joint tucked into an orange grove in Mesa. The setting is simple: gravel lot, picnic tables, and a converted shipping container housing the kitchen. The kitchen smokes brisket, ribs, and pork butts over pecan wood. These meats fill sandwiches, quesadillas, burritos, and more. Many people come for one of the Valley’s iconic barbecue dishes: a half pound of brisket on a sandwich with peanut butter and jelly. Anchored by homemade salsas and house-fried tortilla chips, Jalapeno Bucks presents a compelling version of Arizona barbecue that feels original." - Chris Malloy

Google
The bean burrito was huge and stuffed with beans & cheese. The brisket sandwich tho….. one of the better ones we’ve had in a while. Better than any brisket we ate in Texas. It was tender and juicy either nice bark. Grab a pint of the spicy green salsa when you’re there, you won’t be disappointed ! Highly recommend.

Google
Very good food. Ambience is great, rustic and fun. Staff was busy, but friendly. Multiple choices of food and styles. An older gentleman reccomended we get a couple burritos and I chose the 3 way burrito. It has red sauce pork, green sauce beef and cheese. The thing weight a lot. It was a very runny/wet inside, but wow the flavor was great. The hot sauce that came with it was perfect. You did have to be strategic with your bites. Never got soggy outside.

Google
Staff was friendly and prompt with a takeout order. Had the 1/4LB beef brisket sandwich and it was massive. Haven’t found a better one yet in the valley. They don’t skimp and the price is very reasonable for what you get. Perfect char, juicy, and tender. Will NOT disappoint.

This is the second time my wife and I had stopped here at Jalapeño Bucks to get some bbq, and it is was just as delicious as the first time we discovered it! I am little disappointed though on all the development of homes going in around the establishment as it use to be more nestled in a country type setting with lots of citrus trees. Will definitely keep coming back though as long as they are open. Great food, great service.

Recently I visited the Orange store and decided to try Jalapeno Buck's. I ordered the burrito and the brisket. I was disappointed with the taste. The burrito tasted like minced beans and nothing else, The brisket was very dry. I bought a bag of oranges and drove away. Disappointed 😞. Sorry. The area around is getting more commercial, new construction around and probably soon the Orange farm will not exist. Edit: As you can see by the owners response, they do not care about their customers.

I recently visited Jalapeño Bucks, and it was an extraordinary experience that I can't wait to share. Nestled in the heart of Queen Creek, this spot is a hidden gem for anyone who loves delicious, flavorful food with a bit of a kick. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted with a warm and friendly atmosphere that set the tone for the entire visit. I ordered the Brisket, Egg, and Cheese Burrito, and it was nothing short of spectacular. The brisket was tender and flavorful, with a smoky richness that perfectly complemented the fluffy scrambled eggs and gooey melted cheese. The combination was wrapped in a fresh, warm tortilla that held everything together beautifully without overpowering the flavors inside. Each bite was a delightful blend of textures and tastes that left me craving more. What really stood out to me was the quality and freshness of the ingredients. It's clear that Jalapeño Bucks takes pride in sourcing the best possible products for their dishes. The brisket was cooked to perfection, with a melt-in-your-mouth quality that is hard to find. The eggs were light and fluffy, and the cheese added just the right amount of creaminess to balance out the other flavors. The service was equally impressive. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, making sure that my order was just right and checking in to see if I needed anything else. Their genuine enthusiasm for the food they serve is infectious and adds to the overall positive experience. In addition to the outstanding food and service, the atmosphere at Jalapeño Bucks is vibrant and welcoming. It's a great place to relax and enjoy a meal with friends or family. Whether you're a local or just passing through Queen Creek, I highly recommend stopping by Jalapeño Bucks for a memorable dining experience. Five stars all the way!

Google
The menu is very easy to understand. Pick your meal, tell the person at the window, find a seat in the shade and wait a couple minutes for your name to be called. I eat where my rideshare passengers eat and they keep telling me to go to Jalapeño Bucks. I was full and happy

Google
Usually the food is good . But I had hair long brown hair in the enchiladas and a short black one in the Mac salad )( they did remake the enchiladas ) when I found the hair in my Mac salad I was done with it sadly I won’t be eating here going forward nor will I be recommending any future business here . They need to work on sanitation rather than me hearing the worker (young Caucasian girl )say “ I don’t know how that could’ve happened “ in a smart tone when I know I certainly don’t have that kind of hair myself just ridiculous I acted like I didn’t even hear her smart comment and when she brought the food she gon try to be really nice when bringing my food to me and say “here you hun” which was clearly insincere … as I’m very kind to ppl and every time I come or anyone of color I’ve noticed that she’s seemingly very rude to them for no apparent reason …

Yelp
We happened to stop by Jalapeño Bucks on the way back home and I wish this place was closer because we would be there often! It was so good! There are a few tables outside and no indoor seating so this is a grab and go place in the thick of summer. The service was quick and we put it our order at the window and it was ready within 10 minutes or so. We got 2 bean and cheese burritos, a 3 way burrito which had red pork, green beef, beans and cheese and a greenie beanie. We did also get a side of potato salad. The bean and cheese burritos were good, nothing super exciting. The star was that greenie beanie burrito, the flavor on it was so good and these burritos are HUGE! Like 2 people can definitely eat off of one and the prices are super reasonable for what you get. The potato salad was actually so good as well. I will definitely grab more of that and try their other salads and mango salsa next time. Definitely a good stop for food!

Yelp
I used to live right around the corner and moved away 5 years ago....I still am craving this place. The BEST burritos in town. You can't go wrong with getting the standard green burrito or my newer favorite the brisket bean and cheese. They have the best sauces. This is my only regret of moving out of the north Mesa area. I love these guys and miss it when they would answer the phone and said hey Jennifer, the usual?

Yelp
Been visiting, jalapeño bucks for a very long time, I absolutely love this place. The first thing I tried was the peanut butter brisket, which was phenomenal. Another one of my absolute favorites is the brisket bean and cheese burrito. Has such an awesome smoky flavor. I don't think I've ever had anything there that I didn't like. The service is always great. The people that work there are awesome. It's a beautiful little shack that used to be in the middle of nowhere which I absolutely love because now they are surrounded by housing that probably shouldn't be there. The orange groves are gone, the feel of small town is gone, but this place is a one of a kind and a hidden gem . Give this place a try you will absolutely love it.

Yelp
From an Arizona native: Jalapeño Buck's is such a valley gem. Across the board, food is fantastic. Super sloppy to eat, but everything is delicious. My husband got the brisket sandwich (with jalapeños and honey mustard sauce) and said it might be the best brisket sandwich he's had in Arizona (he has had many). The green chile beef burrito is delicious (a tad floppy) but super filling and tasty. Service is good, fun to sit outside on an easy going day (they have misters under the shade). Pretty good bang for your buck, no pun intended.
google avatar

Yelp
OMG. The peanut butter and jelly brisket. Enough said. But because I need more words for this review, I'll add that they also have great chips and salsa. I want to go back and try the burritos. Everything looks so delicious.

Kevin K.

Yelp
I guess green chili burrito means more beans than green chili. I got a bean burrito also for my grandson and a soda and it was $50 seemed a little bit expensive for the quality. I did like the mango salsa.
google avatar

Alex L.

Yelp
It's nice to live nearby a great bbq place with alot of offerings and a citrus market. The brisket, bean, and cheese or egg burrito is my go-to on the weekends. The bbq sauce that comes with is mild and flavorful. Great for large parties with outdoor seating only.
google avatar

Bill G.

Yelp
Loved the food. Actually some of the best food I've had. It's miles from nowhere but there's an old saying that, if you have a product that people love, they will come, wherever you are.
google avatar

Bryan G.

Yelp
Burnt ends and PBJ brisket sandwich were very good. Sauces are not what one might expect for BBQ but had good flavor. The refried beans were good as well. The ambiance is very minimalist but works.)
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
The brisket enchiladas are my favorite! We love the mango salsa and mac salad. When we have friends and family in town we love to take them there as it is unique with the barbecue brisket burritos. So good! It is fun to eat out side at the picnic tables when the weather is good.
google avatar

Yelp
I ate the Buck out of this place, it's so Bucking good!!! It's definitely my new Buck Buddy...love it! I'm of the belief that you can make anything into a burrito...it's my favorite food group. Love so many things about this spot...the location, the storefront, outdoor seating only, smoky bbq smells, the burritos are phenomenal, the people are super friendly, everything! I went with the brisket, egg and cheese burrito and added refried beans to it. Loved every bite and was sad when it was gone. But I'll hit this again....but I'll probably wait a few days so I don't seem desperate. On a scale of 1 to 10, I love this place!

Yelp
First of all I do not know why YELP keeps directing me to these cool places and they are all outdoors and it's July!!! Ugh it's so hot out today. But i have wanted to try this place for so long. NO RESTROOMS! What kind of establishment doesn't provide restrooms? The food is so messy you can't even wash your hands. Full disclosure on the food- I am not huge on BBQ, I like it but, it's never been my favorite. The portions are huge, but so are the prices. Almost $19 for a sandwich. Got the PB&J brisket sandwich, it tastes good I give taste 4/5. The PB&J (grape) tastes so unique with the brisket. Like the concept. BUT WHERE IT GOES WRONG- the bread was so soggy.....it was disgusting. I don't know if it's because the brisket is so greasy..... but you can barely pick up this mush. The brisket egg and cheese- HUGE- couldn't even finish it. But it would be so much better if they chopped up the brisket. Nothing was mixed, you're either getting a bite of just meat or a bite of egg and cheese (unless you have a huge mouth). Then when I bite into it I get a lot of chewy pieces. Ya this place isn't for me. The mango salsa was a 10/10 The coleslaw was good and I hate coleslaw Mac salad was good

Yelp
This place was so good!!! 10/10 recommend to everyone who loves a good pulled pork sandwich. First time coming here and I will definitely come back and recommend to my friends and family. Service was quick and the employees are super nice. This place is just overall such a great vibe

Erica M.

Yelp
This was my first time here, and unfortunately, probably the last. The food was actually good, but the customer service was the worst I've experienced. The young woman taking our order, just stared at me, blank faced with no greeting, no smile, no basic courtesy. It was uncomfortable and unprofessional. Then my husband went to the window to ask for a spoon(Because the burrito was so messy) the staff member responded with attitude and was extremely rude and even shut the window on him. Hopefully they improve their customer service because the food deserves better.
google avatar

Paola M.

Yelp
Barely heard of this place & I cannot believe how much I was missing out on! I drove about 40 min to try this place & it was definitely worth the drive. I got the 1/4 pulled pork sandwich the meat was tender & soft & the bun makes it even better . I also had their green chili beef burrito & that also had an amazing taste not too spicy but a good spice the beans and cheese were slightly melted. The service was actually pretty fast and the ambiance was nice, ate outside and it was just perfect. Definitely will be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Great road side brisket spot. It's like a food truck without the wheels. Brisket is killer. Try the FRIED brisket, egg, and cheese burrito. No toilets so come prepared. Will definitely be back when in town. Close to the Boeing plant so ideal for lunch. Quick service.
google avatar

Bonnie F.

Yelp
If you're looking for Authentic Mexican food in an outdoor atmosphere, THIS IS THE PLACE!! We brought our friends from out of town here and had a Great Experience!! Yummy food too!! It's a Hidden Gem! We had fast friendly window service as well!!
google avatar

Bill G.

Yelp
Awesome lunch spot. Great to stop in and get a bite. Had the brisket sandwich. Get some salsa on the side, and it is awesome! Normal BBQ counter with outdoor seating. Don't go here if you expect anything else. Service is good, no complaints.
google avatar

Lisa S.

Yelp
Great service. Great food. Big servings. Friendly staff. Really high recommendation for the Arizona que that they serve.
google avatar

Kimberly S.

Yelp
Jalapeño bucks is amazing. The 3-Way Burrito is absolutely amazing! The perfect combination of flavors and textures makes it a standout dish. Every bite is packed with deliciousness, and the portions are generous. Whether you're craving something hearty or just want the ultimate comfort food, this burrito hits the spot every time. Highly recommend--5 stars!
google avatar

Tajia P.

Yelp
Best place for brisket sandwich's! The pb and j brisket sandwich is also so good but I usually split it with someone. Ribs are fall off the bone and cont go wrong with any burrito you get. They have great mango salsa and chips

Adam G.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I had ordered the 3 way burrito a brisket enchilada plate with side of macaroni salad the 1/4 pound beef brisket sandwich as well as a pint of rice and two cokes. Was really happy with pricing and the way the food looked and tasted. Cashier had forgot our pint of rice but ended up getting a free giant bag of chips and side salsa, honestly made me so glad she forgot to put that rice in the bag. definitely a far drive but good food and friendly service not the best place to eat but not hard to take Togo. Definitely worth trying, we will be back! Better than most generic bbq places around Az.

Yelp
Jalapeño Buck's has been on my longtime bucket list! With their specific hours, I finally had an opportunity to give them a visit! They're closed on Sundays and Mondays and open from 10 AM - 6 PM or 7 PM the rest of the week. So unless you're in the area, not the most flexible hours. That being said, I decided to snag a late lunch bite from them this week. They're a BBQ Mexican fusion type joint. , featuring exclusively outdoor seating (no animals allowed), no restroom and walk up counter service. They have a fun shack like vibe with lots of cool signs, but overall limited amenities, but then again, you're going for the food! Or should be! The girl who took my order was very sweet. I knew ahead of time from perusing the menu and reviews that I was going to get the brisket, bean and cheese burrito - The cashier let me know it was a solid and popular choice. She ran me through all their salsa options: A spicy red, a verde type, a more like forward creamy green, a mango and a classic mild red. I did also get a side of guacamole, was pretty disappointed it was prepackaged and expected something made in house, but alas still nice they have it. The burrito was very good! Quite hefty, super smoky and tender brisket. I added pickled jalapeños, overall quite a delicious, but heavy and trick burrito. I loved all the salsas. Would probably opt for spicy red, creamy green and mango as personal favorites. I definitely am glad I made it there, would visit again, but with the limited hours, may not be there in the immediate future. I understand why people enjoy it so much and definitely want to try some of those burnt ends on my next visit!
google avatar

Laurie A.

Yelp
I live over an hour away and I'm so glad I made the long trek over there. I had the pb&j brisket OMG!!!!! You have to eat it right when you get it. I ate half right when I got the order and saved the other half for a few hours later. It was definitely better right when it's made. The employees were very helpful and courteous when trying to decide what to order. You order at the window and then they will call you when it's ready. The MAC salad was sooooo good!!!
google avatar

Charles S.

Yelp
After seeing an article pop up in my newsfeed this morning I decided to check it out. I found exactly what the article said a cozy country style barbecue place in Mesa. Just a shack with great barbecue and burritos! I had the Wicked Sister Sandwich and was not disappointed, every bite was an explosion of flavors and taste. I will be back there is much more on the menu to explore.
google avatar

Gina P.

Yelp
Love the brisket sandwich and bean and cheese brisket burrito. The sandwich portion is consistent but sometimes my burrito feels like small. Great food and a fun take out or place to eat outdoors.
google avatar

James S.

Yelp
OMG so good! A true iconic BBQ must taste establishment in Arizona. Seating is no thrill bench style outside only in the AZ heat... but man the food is great! An odd or unlikely favorite is their macaroni salad! It goes well with whatever you order!!!
google avatar

Brandon M.

Yelp
Always amazing burritos! This place has the best food and best service! Salsa is amazing too! Because their food and service is so good there is always a line so be prepared.
google avatar

Sadie A.

Yelp
Green chile brisket burrito. That is the key to happiness at jalapeño bucks. It's sooo good. Just try it.
google avatar

Kenzie V.

Yelp
The food was amazing, and I recommend trying their green salsa with some chips. I do with the lady at the window was a little more friendly, but other than that this place was a 10/10
google avatar

Michael A.

Yelp
I love this place we have had the pulled pork sandwiches, burnt ends, ribs, but our favorite is the red chili burrito! It has the perfect level of spice but note if you get it with beans and cheese you do get noticeably less meat. The store next door offers fresh citrus fruits and local honey. It is an all outdoor seating area and keep in mind there is no restroom for customers. Worth making a trip out.
google avatar

Marcy L.

Yelp
The best hidden gem in Mesa-- that ironically everyone knows about! I have met people from all over when I stop in. It's tucked away in a really cool farm stand with picnic tables and 2 windows for ordering and takeout. I could rave about basically every one of their dishes! My favorite that I go back to is the pulled pork quesadilla! ALL of their sauces are SOOO delicious-- and I'm picky about sauces! I also absolutely love love LOVE their mango salsa. The best part, you can always feel great about going here, knowing you are supporting a local family-owned business!
google avatar

Shelly B.

Yelp
Amazing food! Such a hidden gem! Great service! Love the food! If you haven't been here you have to try it.
google avatar

Aubrey F.

Yelp
Jalapeño Bucks, you have my heart forever! Delicious food, great service. We've tried many things on the menu but always go back to the brisket. Brisket quesadilla, brisket sandwiches- it's all fantastic. Special shout out to the pb&j brisket sandwich, it's 10/10. They offer a casual dining experience with plenty of seating. We have ordered out several times and it's always been consistent. Staff is friendly and prices are reasonable for the portions. Eat here if you're looking for good bbq, you will not be disappointed!

Sydney S.

Yelp
The PBJ Brisket sandwich was such a unique concept and I loved it. It was a bit of a drive so I may not come back unless in the area but it was a really cool concept, with good tasting food. The people at the counter were super nice!
google avatar

Laura P.

Yelp
Food is great. I love the pulled pork Service is on point Ambiance is as good as the food. It's a charming lil spot that still exists nestled in the orange groves What a great spot to enjoy lunch Get there early. Everyone loves it.
google avatar

Yelp
This was an accidental find. Had just finished a soccer game and this was close to where the fields were. First thing to know there are no bathrooms so go before you go. The food was hit and miss, we went with about 15 family members and it was an even split of people who enjoyed their food and didnt. I lived my PB and J Brisket, but my 12 year old daughter did not. We loved their salsas and chips and left with two pints and a large bag of chips for the next day. I loved their sides, we tried 3 of them. Mac Salad, coleslaw and potato salad. Nothing extraordinary or different, but tasty! Some people did not like the Mac Salad and only a few of us liked the potato salad of the group. Their BBQ sauce was not my favorite and they only had one that they offered to us. Overall a quick places to grab a bite with only outdoor seating which is good for big groups, but we will wait until the weather cools down as it took a little while to get our food orders. They seemed to stay pretty busy!
google avatar

Steve T.

Yelp
Finally got around to coming here. Pasted by before and always had a line and in a rush. Good to pre-order if you have a large order or don't want to wait 30mins. Overall like the outdoor window serve atmosphere. Ordered my favorite green chili with the shredded burrito. Was feeling a little hungry so made it a plate with rice and beans with my choice salad (potato). Burrito was good I liked it, could use some other things inside like cabbage or lettuce for some texture. Rice and beans I was disappointed with the quantity, felt like 2 tablespoons of each. Rice wasn't flavorful but cooked good. Beans were ok can't mess that up. Potato salad was really good, like with there's relish and light mustard mmmm. Overall not too bad for what's in the area. Would try the bbq next time I'm around there
google avatar

Emily P.

Yelp
Tucked in a grove of orange trees, jalapeño bucks is a great stop for lunch. The meat is to die for and only gets better when you add it into burritos and quesadillas. The staff are all very friendly and unless you decide to order a whole bunch of food (like me), you won't be waiting long to get your order.
google avatar

Kyrie Z.

Yelp
Ok so this place is a hidden gym. Steady orders going in and still only waited about 10 min to eat. The chips and salsa was fresh. The potato salad and beans delish BUT that pbj brisket sandwich is what dreams are made of! Will definitely be back!

Lauren Z.

Yelp
Bucks has amazing food. Pulled pork quesadilla is the best. We always get the chips and mild salsa. It's amazing!!!! Great sauce selection.

Steamboat C.

Yelp
The atmosphere here is undeniably cool, but the food was a major letdown. I can't help but feel like this place was awesome at one point, but as they became more popular, they struggled to scale up and maintain the quality they might have once been known for. The "soup burrito" (green chile and shredded beef) was incredibly watery, making it almost impossible to eat like a burrito. I've never seen anything like it. The ribs were overcooked and still had the membrane on them--a rookie mistake that you just don't see in serious BBQ establishments. Honestly, it came across as laziness. As for the brisket sandwich, it was so dry it could have been mistaken for beef jerky. The highlights of the meal were the chips and hot Mexican salsa, along with the BBQ sauce, which was reminiscent of Famous Dave's Sweet and Sassy, though a bit thinner. Those were the only bright spots in an otherwise disappointing experience. To give some perspective, while we were eating, we saw another diner open her burrito, take a bite with a fork, get up, and throw it away before leaving. That speaks volumes about the quality. What really surprised me was the line of people waiting outside. It left me wondering if they were suffering from culinary dysphoria or just hoping for a better experience than what I had. That said, I want to be fair. My review is only based on the food I tasted, and they do have more items on the menu that could very well be better. Everyone has off days, so I'll leave it at that. Two stars--one for the atmosphere and one for the salsa and BBQ sauce. But I can't recommend the food I tried.

Yelp
I had been wanting to try Jalapeno Bucks and the day finally came! I was hanging out with my daughter and son in law and he said lets get some bbq, so we checked out the menu and called in our order and headed on over. Jalapeno Bucks isn't a fancy place but its definitely a place that shouldn't be missed. They let you know right up front they are not Carolina, Kansas City, Texas, Kentucky, Memphis bbq so don't come here with those comparisons. They call themselves Arizona style BBQ. I went with an order of brisket; I was just wanting some bbq meat. Sometimes its all that's needed. The brisket was tender and full of favor, love some smoked bbq brisket. The bbq sauce was delish too, it's like a salsa/bbq sauce with a kick which paired perfectly with the meat. The rest of my crew enjoyed their food as well. Glad to have stopped by Jalapeno Bucks to give them a try!
google avatar

Darya S.

Yelp
The thing to get at Jalapeno Buck's is the brisket PB&J sandwich. They had an innovative idea for a combination and it works. I do wish the peanut butter they used was homemade. It's not. The brisket itself isn't high-quality or lean. It's quite fatty and oily. However, the duo ingredients work for a grubby bite. I wouldn't go out of your way to get it or eat here. I'd say that if you're in the area for, say, golf, then come here afterwards for a bite to go. He also got a regular brisket sandwich and a steak burrito, and neither one was anything special. The brisket PB&J is the star of the show here. If you want to try something different in an extremely casual (like, shack type of place), then stop by.
google avatar

Jeff B.

Yelp
Brisket sandwich was almost uneatable. Greasy soggy mess. The bun was so grease soaked it tasted like I was eating raw dough ruining the whole sandwich experience. Had to pull meat off and eat it. The meat had a good smoke flavor just too much fat left on it. Serve the bread on the side on to go orders. I live 2 min away, 20 minutes away you would just have thrown bun away.
google avatar

Britni M.

Yelp
Best macaroni salad ever. Great tater salad. The salsas especially green are delicious!!! The staff is super nice and the service is fast. They are so busy like 90% of the time and super efficient!! It's great as a fall or winter place summer I'd say definitely take it to go!! And beginning of year you can go to the orange stabnd!
google avatar

Greg P.

Yelp
The food here is always a 10. My wife was skeptical her first time here this week. Was talked into the PB&J brisket sandwich, and walked away in awe. I had the brisket burrito as I always do. It never disappoints.
google avatar

Richard S.

Yelp
There are no restrooms, nowhere to sit except picnic tables outside, and the staff didn't even know what people that may need a restroom could do.... Hahaha. This place is in a construction zone and must be just trying to survive.

John M.

Yelp
Sure it's off the beaten path, but that only adds to the intrigue of what's inside "the barn." I had been to Jalapeño Buck's on another occasion, but I didn't remember how outstanding the food is. We started with the Hot Gringo Green Salsa (large brown bag of chips and a pint of salsa -- enough for 4) and shared the Green Chili Pork Burrito and 1/4 lb. Brisket Sandwich. Food came out piping hot and full of flavor.
