Yelp
I live nowhere near downtown but was in the area for a meeting. As everyone has already mentioned, this place is located on Martin Luther King Jr if that says anything about the sketch factor ;) but after all these raving reviews I just HAD to stop by and check it out! I show up at 10pm on a Wednesday night. It was maybe 50 degrees out and drizzling rain.
I walk up to the shack and look inside...no one there. I look around for a another minute, check out the menu, etc and then a girl jumps out of a Camry that's parked next to the shack and yells "here I am!" LOL. I don't blame her I guess, it's quite cold to be standing inside an essentially outdoor food stand when there's nothing happening on a Wednesday night.
I ask her what their best sellers are and she says Lemon Pepper, Hot, and oh, BBQ. I decide to get 5 Lemon Pepper as suggested and 5 Hot (since they don't have Medium, which is what I normally go for). Also opted to get fries last minute so my total came to $9.19
I talk to her a little while she's making my wings and found out that she has been working here since it opened 16 years ago, her aunt owns this place, and Jamal is her aunt's son. I tell her that people on Yelp love these wings and that they should consider expanding the store or adding a delivery option but she said they can't afford it because her aunt works as a teacher for Special Ed kids... I was so close to offering up a huge donation towards that effort or creating a partnership with her when I realized that I didn't have that kind of money to give away and that I'm just here for some wings!
So I get my wings and fries (celery and ranch were included without me asking for them, which was a nice surprise), put them on my passenger seat, and start my 12-mile drive home. I normally have no problem waiting until I get home no matter what take-out I have but the lemon pepper and french fries smelled so good that I just HAD to taste one fry. Wow, they were easily the best fries I've ever had in my life! It could be that I've just never had fries THAT freshly fried or it could be the bits of lemon pepper from the wings that got on the fries, but long story short, I ate 85% of the fries AND 4 wings on the way home.
As for the wing flavors:
* Lemon Pepper: a bit on the salty side but no saltier than lemon pepper wings from any other place, super lemony, and strangely addicting. imagine wings sprinkled with the lemon pepper seasoning that you can get at grocery stores and then dip those wings in lemon juice, that's what they tasted like. as a matter of fact, that could be the exact case because there was clear lemon juice at the bottom of the box when I got home and i started dipping my hot-flavored wings in it.
* Hot: pretty tasty even though it's a bit too spicy for a girl that normally eats Mediums. I made it to 3 and was more than happy to save the other 2 for lunch the next day.
They also have seafood options on the weekends (like fried fish and buffalo shrimp) so I'll definitely be back.
