Coffee, bagels, sandwiches, espresso, tea, pour-over, makers-market

"A cozy Corktown café known for signature Central and South American coffee blends that evoke the owner’s native region and for a creative bagel selection—ranging from classic plain and asiago to Mediterranean, black sesame garlic, and rosemary sea salt—making it a favored spot for mornings and casual breaks." - AFAR

"This beloved Corktown coffee destination features a variety of blended and single-sourced beans from the likes of Nicaragua, Peru, and Ethiopia, as well as a supply of freshly-made bagels, breakfast sandwiches, teas, and a small makers-market in the corner where guests can pick up a locally-made scented candle or other handmade gifts. A mix of counter seating, long tables, and sofas make this the place to meet up or work solo from your laptop." - Serena Maria Daniels

"Among the many Corktown establishments where, if you’re looking to run into someone you know, you’ll probably run into them there. Featuring an array of classic espresso drinks, coffee roasted in-house, James Oliver also carries kombucha on tap, pastries, sandwiches, and of course bagels (the space formerly housed the Detroit Institute of Bagels)." - Serena Maria Daniels

"In the corner building at Michigan and the Lodge, I found James Oliver Coffee Co., a 3,400-square-foot flagship cafe that opened this week in the former Corktown space of the Detroit Institute of Bagels. Operated by David Shock and Miranda Clark (daughter and son-in-law of founder Jim James Oliver Clark, who remains on as a consultant), the family-owned shop offers bagels and bagel sandwiches plus a full line of brewed beverages — an espresso bar, cold brew, nitro, tea, and a pour-over station — and the owners have suggested they’re working out details so you can have a bagel, a coffee and even a glass of wine. Its grand opening was Saturday, October 30, and it’s open daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m." - Monica Williams
