Looking at my Yelp insights shows a glaring hole in my Korean restaurant visits/reviews; I figured the best way to get our Korean adventures started is by visiting what many consider to be "the best" Korean spot in the Bay: Jang Su Jang.
This stalwart Michelin-rated Korean spot is located in a nondescript strip mall that's seen better days and functions as both a restaurant, as well as an AYCE KBBQ spot.
I'm actually not that into KBBQ (too much work for my lazy ass), so we opted for the restaurant side.
The Good:
*Service was friendly and fast
*Haemul Pajeon (Seafood pancake) was delicious, crispy, and filled with pescatarian goodness. Carissa thought it was a bit too fishy for her liking, but I disagreed.
*Wang Mandoo (boiled dumplings w/ beef, pork, and kimchi) were just OK, but Carissa thought they were the bee's knees. Lots of others wax poetic about them, but to me, they were just missing something.
*DotoleeYachae Guksoo (cold Acorn noodles tossed w/ vegetables & soy sauce dressing) were absolutely terrific and would be the perfect meal on a warm day. Cool, refreshing, and packed with flavor, sweet, and salty flavor.
*Maeun Galbi Jjim (Spicy Braised Beef Short Ribs) was probably the best thing I've eaten all year--if not, then def at least in the top-3. Sweet, salty, spicy, and full of beefy umami flavor that I just kept wanting more and more. The flavor was so complex that each bite tasted almost completely different from the previous.
The Meh:
*Prices are a bit on the high side, but since everything is made in-house and #FuckingDelicious, you won't hear me complain too loudly.
The Ugly:
*Evidently the parking lot is a hot bed of criminal activity and car break-ins, as there's a myriad of signs in the restaurant warning customers to lock their doors and not leave anything appealing in sight.
TLDR: Fantastic food, friendly service, and mildly obscene prices but still #wortheverypenny
