Japanese House is a good place for non-desk lunches in huge portions - Review - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Japanese House is a popular lunch spot right across from Salesforce Tower. It's a good reprieve from whatever office you're in, thanks to the quiet room, the fast service, and portions that will cover dinner for the night. Get there before noon and it'll be easy to stake claim to one of the first-come-first-serve tables. Even during prime lunch hours, though, the wait will be likely no more than 15 minutes (and takeout is speedy if you’re crunched for time before another meeting). Sushi takes up most of the menu, and it’s decent, but you should focus on the katsu, tempura, and curry. For a little bit of each, opt for the bento box special with your choice of two mini-entrees. Food Rundown photo credit: Patrick Wong Sushi Totally fine—but you’ll find similar quality rolls and nigiri across the street at Ebiko for a lower price. photo credit: Patrick Wong Chicken Katsu Served in a pile so heavy it might break airline carry-on rules. A majority of the strips of meat are moist, but there might be a handful of dry and grisly pieces. Still, we’d get this again. Tempura As with everything else, this helping of fried veggies is generous. You may need to search a bit for what’s hiding beneath the overly thick breading, but it's as crispy as you'll want it to be. photo credit: Patrick Wong Japanese Curry Rich, though slightly too salty. This rice plate comes with your choice of fried protein—we like the fish best. photo credit: Patrick Wong Agedashi Tofu A solid starter. The thin and crispy crust holds strong against a pool of broth that has just enough sweetness to balance out the salty kick of the tofu. photo credit: Patrick Wong Gyoza Skip this. The skin is a tad too thin and the bottoms are not crispy enough." - Patrick Wong

Fresh and high quality fish, quick and efficient service. Traditional sushi chef, you absolutely get your money’s worth. I love this place. I mean just look at my takeout Sake Don box!

Wow a little cozy gem. Great service and fresh sushi. The Ramen was spicy and delicious. Thank you again San Francisco for wonderful dining experiences.

Google
Great place with the delicious food! The Tsunami rolls are an explosion of taste, simply divine! And the thoughtful touch of endlessly flowing green tea completes the experience.

Google
I got the Fish Katsu Curry Rice and I loved it! It was so delicious. The fish katsu was perfect, and the portion was large and filling. The miso soup and salad on the side were nice touches too. The employees were so helpful and kind as well! I’ll be back when I’m in SF again :)

Google
A little cozy place hidden in the heart of San Francisco. I bumped into this restaurant by chance. Ordered small meal as it’s later in the night. Authentic delicious meal that made me decide to come back here again real soon!

Google
Locally owned Izakaya run by the kindest people. Better yet, the food was delicious. Chicken Katsu curry rice plate was savory, albacore sashimi was great quality, and the tempura appetizer was generous. Sushi rolls were tasty too, will be coming back!

Google
Great little Japanese spot down town, quick and convenient if you work in the area. Authentic cuisine with a Japanese owner, the staff is very friendly, the food is delicious, and the price is more than reasonable. I’ve had a variety of their dishes, I really like the curries, bento boxes, and sashimi. I hope the owner also decides to make katsu and tamago sandwiches in the future, they could be very popular.

Google
A great spot for a quick bento box lunch. I got tempura and chicken katsu, and both were good though I enjoyed the katsu more. It came with a salad and a bowl of miso soup.

Yelp
I came here for a late lunch. I missed having an Asian restaurant in the area and although I miss Perilla, I'm happy that Japanese House has taken its place. It was a chilly day and I wanted something warm and comforting. They had a chicken katsu curry rice dish which came with miso soup. You order from the QR code on the table so you don't have to wait for someone to take your order. The chicken katsu also came with pickled vegetables. The katsu was nicely fried and crispy and went really well with the curry rice; it was like a warm hug :) Service was friendly and efficient. I will have to try their sushi next time but that will have to be on a warmer day.

Yelp
I stumbled on this place while looking for a new place to try near work. Really wanted to like it as a small establishment that took over the old Perilla location...and was hoping to be pleasantly surprised and delighted based on other reviews...unfortunately, it fell short of expectations. I ordered the sushi deluxe for $21. Not bad value I thought. However, when I got the sushi and sashimi, I tasted a very distinct lemony flavor that was too dominant and the fish wasn't as cold as it should be. Both of which makes me believe the fish might not be the freshest. Wanted to like this small business but not likely to return.

Yelp
Had a craving for tonkatsu so I stopped by. Got Katsu curry. Katsu slices were thin and low quality chicken thigh meat - kind of stringy. The chicken in the chicken curry was worryingly rubbery. I'm not a food snob but was worried this wasn't cooked right and with low quality ingredients you need to at least make sure it's cooked through. This is after they first brought me the wrong dish and service in general was not great. I was thinking the place in general might be a hidden authentic spot but it's not. Unfortunately won't be returning.

Yelp
The price point and the quality of the food make this restaurant stand out. The katsu curry is cooked to order and tastes great--better than what many restaurants offer at a higher price. It's refreshing to find a place that serves delicious food at such an extremely reasonable price.

Yelp
Super easy to miss since it's next to a construction site but such a great experience! The prices were budget friendly despite being in the pricey FiDi area. They greeted us with the option of tea or water almost immediately after being seated. We then ordered on our phone which was super convenient and also came out super quick! The chicken katsu curry rice was gold, so yummy! The Chirashi bowl was also super fresh fish and the takoyaki (octopus balls) were hot and delicious. Honestly was not expecting such a great experience when I randomly chose a restaurant near me but I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Oh, I remember this space when it was the original Perilla because I was kinda addicted to their five-spice chicken with garlic noodles back when I was a FiDi working drone. They closed this location a while ago, but Jamie W let me know a Japanese fast food operation moved in. He liked it, and that was enough of a testimonial for me to give it a try. As far as I could tell, it's not Japanese-owned, but hey, I'm not prejudiced. Much. Besides, there are Japanese people who don't know how to cook Japanese themselves (...finger pointed at me). Regardless, the staff here have the skillz to make standard Japanese dishes in a hearty fashion judging from my order. While I technically ordered an appetizer and an entree, it amounted to a double lunch. I first started with the $10.50 Mixed Vegetable Tempura, and quite a variety pile arrived (photo: https://yelp.to/vkncw2mhG0). It was well crisped and the veggies well chosen for their contrasting textures. My entree soon arrived but not before the obligatory miso soup and salad (photo: https://yelp.to/98UhOZYF8U). The $13.50 Chicken Katsu Curry Rice was well executed with a generous amount of both poultry and thick curry sauce (photo: https://yelp.to/tp60vg0CZ5). While I could have gone for a bit more rice, I was quite satisfied and pretty well stuffed. I'm not a regular in the area anymore, but I'd definitely come back. FOOD - 4 stars...solid workaday Japanese grub, portions quite generous AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...minimal decor but plenty of elbow room SERVICE - 4 stars...efficient, not much on the chit-chat TOTAL - 4 stars...nice option across from Salesforce RELATED - Exploring eastern SoMa? Here's my collection of places l've patronized and reviewed: https://bit.ly/2VNINP6

Yelp
Little hole in the wall by Salesforce but good food and decent prices! I came in on a Thursday for a late lunch and was the only one seated inside. The server was nice, food was delivered pretty quickly. I ordered gyozas, 2 stars for them as they weren't all that tasty. I've definitely had better gyozas, more flavorful. I also had the tempura udon soup and while it was plain, it was really delicious and the servings of tempura were great! Served fresh and good variety of veggies. Definitely will be coming back to this place to try other things off their menu!

Yelp
Tucked away in the financial district, this happened to be the perfect spot for a quick work lunch! Service was excellent and prices were surprisingly reasonable for SF. California rolls (not pictured) were delicious and the sushi deluxe platter was surprisingly fresh. Would definitely come back!

Yelp
Been wanting to try this place since it recently opened and is right across from the office! I got a 49ers roll and Salmon - Spicy Tuna bento box (set price lunch and dinner). I wasn't too impressed with the roll as there wasn't actually much salmon on the sushi, and the salmon on the outside kept falling off when picked up. The bento box had a much more generous portion of Salmon teriyaki with some smokey-flavor. Salad dressing and tuna roll were all right, but portions were slightly more conservative. While location is great, the food didn't stand out.

Yelp
As an avid sushi lover, it was great to see a casual sushi restaurant open up in the neighborhood that is open in the evenings and weekend. I've been here a couple times now and can say their fish is legit. It's soft, fresh and their nigiri rice is seasoned lightly, cooked well, and not too tightly packed. Taste like the home style sushi you might get in Japan. So far I've tried the sushi deluxe, chirashi, 3 amigos roll, and salmon nigiri. Their nigiri is my fav so far. Rolls r nice and big. Sashimi and chirashi are standard. But their nigiri is where it's at. Something about the fresh fish, topped on the perfectly textured and seasoned rice. I appreciate that the nigiri rice is kinda loosely packed too. The bite just melts in your mouth. The ratio of rice to fish is also good. They get a little busy during lunch so expect a pick up order to be about 15 mins wait. But dinner was pretty dead and a good place to pop in for dinner otw home from the office. They don't serve alcohol but they mentioned we can byob which is exciting. I'll update this review if this changes. They're in an unfortunate location that tends to have encampments nearby, but I still go. Please check them out so they stay in the neighborhood!!!!!

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place. The waitress was nice, attentive and served us hot genmaicha constantly however... Every food item we ordered was lacking. The sushi plates were very small thus my friends who ordered them left the restaurant hungry. The katsu curry I ordered was a bit dry and not very meaty. The curry was not amazing either. The salad and tofu we got were fresh but bland. The miso soup was good. There is no alcohol on the menu despite it feeling like a "casual dinner & drinks after work" type of place. This used to be where Perilla was and we really wanted to support a local business and check it out. Unfortunately it was not very good.

Yelp
Ordered online and they took forever to accept the order. Did not instill faith and after 30min I think they initially did not realize there was an online order waiting. Anyhow, got the food and it was okay. The tofu was good but the sushi was meh. Probably wouldn't come back unless really craving Japanese for lunch.

Yelp
I noticed this place recently opened and stopped by to get a takeout dinner bc I I had to work late. I arrived around 5 when most people are leaving the office to go home so it wasn't busy. I was greeted immediately and took a takeout menu to look at! The place is small and no frills but has plenty of tables for sit down lunch or dinner as well. I ordered a salmon (chirashi) bowl and a roll. The bowl also came with salad and a miso soup. The lady was nice enough to give me some hot tea to drink while I was waiting which was not expected but very nice of her! I only waited about 5-10 min for my food and it was packaged up nicely and I was back in the office on the laptop in no time. The salmon was fresh and really nice texture! I actually couldn't finish it and didn't get to the roll or the soup! Overall I really enjoyed it, it was a good healthy meal, fast to pick up, and a good price. I'd come back here for lunch for takeout. They had a bento box meal that I might try next. Totally appreciative of this place as there are fewer lunch options in FiDi post Covid, and totally support having a quick place around the corner :) thank you so much!

Yelp
Quick, casual, solid go to sushi spot when you want quality sushi without having to dress up! The menu is diverse, ingredients are fresh and service is friendly.

Yelp
Rounding up because they are new, the people there are nice, and because this is by far the cheapest Japanese food (and some of the cheapest food of any type) in the neighborhood. I got the Tenzaru Soba, which is a plate of vegetable tempura along with cold soba (it's supposed to be cold) and dipping sauce. Both the tempura and the soba quality was pretty average, but this dish was somehow only $13. You can't even get a sandwich for that in this neighborhood! The neighborhood itself is obviously really nice, but this is on the one sketchy corner diagonal from Salesforce Tower amid the permanently halted construction zone for Oceanwide. That shouldn't stop you from trying it out though.

Yelp
This hole in the wall is a welcome addition to the FiDi area downtown. My first visit here was pretty great. The service was quick and considerate. The food was largely great value for the buck. I gave the chirashi bowl a shot, and it was a win. My friend ordered sushi, and the only nitpick was that the roll size was not consistent throughout the roll. Giving this a preemptive 5/5. It is great value for the price point, and the quality is consistent with it. If you're coming here expecting high-end, you're coming in with the wrong expectations. For a quick, affordable lunch in FiDi, this is a must visit, especially before traffic picks up.

Yelp
Delicious food. A new up and coming authentic Japanese restaurant that we really enjoyed! Will be back

Yelp
Japanese House fills the need for a good value carry out or sit down restaurant offering a very comforting, strong selection of Japanese entrées and appetizers in eastern South of Market (Rincon Hill neighborhood, to me). The food came out quickly and the service was adequately attentive. In an area filled with restaurants built for tech and finance expense account credit cards, it is nice to have a more affordable dinner option open seven days a week until 9 PM for locals to enjoy.

Yelp
Really impressed because I walked in with low expectations. I ordered the lion king roll and a bento box. The sushi rice needed a little more vinegar and the lion king roll needed more sauce. The bento box was a good size but the teriyaki sauce had a bit of a bitter taste to it. Overall, decent place with reasonable prices.

Yelp
New-ish Japanese spot in the neighborhood. Not a great first experience as they are severely understaffed and the food wasn't worth the wait. Pros: - Clean and calm ambiance. - Chicken teriyaki had a nice char. - Portions are solid, especially for the area. - Staff stayed calm and friendly. Cons: - The chicken karaage is probably the worst I've ever had. Not crunchy, powdery, burnt, no flavor...you name it. - To-go order took 55 min and, when we got there, we were first in line for that time period. Verdict: 2 stars - The food is below average and is not worth the trip...regardless of the wait. Staff is friendly so, hopefully, they'll improve as things either settle down or they increase staff. Willing to give them a second chance in the future, but won't currently add them to the rotation.

Terrence H.

Yelp
Quick and dirty: I was a little skeptical since it's not Japanese-owned (cues on menu and then in person as I heard Mandarin being spoken by staff - I'm Chinese btw), but thought I'd give it a shot. Ordered the Chicken Katsu Curry. While not mind-blowing or unique, it is exactly what I was hoping for when you order a Japanese curry. It's got crispy katsu. The curry, while not particularly thick, has that signature Japanese curry flavor and is not watered down. It has pickled ginger. So it delivers at a price of $12.50, which sadly is the norm and is actually a slight bargain in the current downtown economic climate. But there's extra touches too, like a salad and miso soup with the order. Can't argue with that! Exceeds my expectations!

Yelp
Food was delicious! We live in the neighborhood, and we ordered takeout. We got a few rolls that were delicious, the Hamachi, was tasty, and the softshell crab was just right. We got a little edamame and miso soup, which was delicious too. Overall hit the spot for local Japanese spot, and we would do it again

Yelp
We WAIT a long time for our food!! All the food was bad, and the sashimi and nigiri are not fresh. and the fried chicken had strange smell. it shouldn't have been served. i am not coming back

Yelp
I popped in one night for dinner and was very pleasantly surprised. While I was the only one there, the staff were very friendly and attentive, making sure that I had everything that I needed and that I was comfortable. I ordered the dragon roll and the 49'ers roll, both of which were tasty and fulfilling.

Yelp
I found this place walking around looking for lunch and I happened to go there on their 2nd day of business. Nice and peaceful inside. Staff was very friendly and attentive. Bento box comes with 2 entree items, rice, miso soup, and salad. Great portion size for the price. Teriyaki chicken was delicious (I've had a hard time finding decent Japanese in the financial district lately...there is a LOT of sawdust chicken out there). I'm so happy this place is close to where I work. I've been here twice now and I'll be going back regularly.

Chang L.

Yelp
Great service and food!! The fish was fresh. The presentation was artful! I highly recommend it.

Alex N.

Yelp
Friendly owners - the lady gave me some tea while I was waiting for my to go order! Delicious food at a great price point! Can't beat the price, especially in SF FiDi Will be coming back :))

John A.

Yelp
The quality of the ingredients is superb, the service is excellent. This is where it ends. To make it worth the price they charge, they need better chefs. Ambience is nice, but it rather feels like a joint, again, it's not sophisticated enough for the price.

Harrison C.

Yelp
Food was great! Would recommend stopping by when near Salesforce tower. Pretty cheap too

Chloe L.

Yelp
huge fan of this restaurant for its fast service and fresh sushi! the waiters are so friendly and this is my go-to spot
