The 20 Best Indian & Pakistani Restaurants in LA

"Jay Bharat is one of the oldest restaurants in Artesia’s Little India, and one of our favorite spots to spend a quiet afternoon eating thali. These stainless steel platters include several small bowls of rice, dal, sambar, chutney, raita, and vegetable curry. Depending on which thali you order, you’ll get slightly different combinations of sides and your choice of fried bread to go with it. Our favorite is their classic Gujarati thali, which comes with soft roti to rip and dip into creamy yogurts, lentil broths, and fragrant pickles." - nikko duren, brant cox

I recently dined at this restaurant and had a mixed experience. I ordered the mini thali with undhiyu and chole sabji. The chole was flavorful, and the overall thali tasted good. However, the undhiyu was missing muthiya, which is a key component of the dish, so it didn’t feel quite authentic. I also tried the Mysore masala dosa, which was decent, but the red masala spread was very minimal. It tasted more like a regular masala dosa, so I was hoping for a stronger Mysore flavor. Lastly, I ordered the sev khamni, but unfortunately, it didn’t meet expectations. The texture and taste were off—we couldn’t eat more than a spoonful. Service was another area that could be improved. Our server didn’t seem very attentive and even banged the disposable water glass on our table, which felt a bit rude. Overall, the food had some highlights, but there were a few misses as well. I hope to see improvements next time because the menu has great potential!

Google
This restaurant serves authentic Indian food and many delicious dishes. Only thing we didn’t like was it’s extremely noisy as Indians customers don’t care about others. Very rude customers.

Google
Awesome delicious thali and dosa. There are many great options for South Indian food in artesia but this is one that I find myself coming back to frequently. This is an incredibly tasty meal!

Google
The service was good. When we entered they had opened 30 minutes before. The cook time was reasonable- it wasn’t brought out too soon(like it was pre frozen), but it also didn’t take too long. The food was enjoyable. We ordered each person their own plate and one for the table. Portions are a little small so you might have to buy more than one thing. The bathroom was okay, there was no mirror. Overall a good experience.

Google
Let me begin by saying that I am not too knowledgeable when it comes to Indian food. This review is going to be based upon my impressions alone and will make no reference to authentic Indian food as I haven't had that. With that out of the way, I'll say that I was blown away by all the tastes. It astounds me just how flavorful Indian food is and how colorful it can be. We ordered a bunch of food to try and taste as much as we could. The dishes ranged from OK to amazing. The majority were above average. The ones that I was not too fond of were those that required the dipping sauces to give it flavor. Simply because the sauces were not to my liking. Yet, there was this green sauce that was just phenomenal! I ended up pouring that onto all the food! It was just that good! According to my friends, the South Indian dishes were not as good as the rest..

Google
The Kathiyawadi thali comprised the following: khichdi (good); kadhi (probably a good example of its type but too sweet for my liking); the same excellent sev-tamatar; dhokli/gatte (an excellent sabzi of besan “dumplings”); ringan-bateka, a potato-eggplant sabzi (very good); bharthu, the Kathiyawadi incarnation of baingan bharta (excellent); and the same gulab jamun, khaman and papad trio. Rounding out this thali were a regular roti and a very good rotlo (or thick bajra/millet roti).

Google
This restaurant never fails to deliver on the quality and taste of the food they serve. We went there over the weekend and ordered Kathiawadi and Punjabi thali along with other chat dishes. The food was delicious and the service was quick. I will highly recommend this place to folks looking for good Indian vegetarian food. One thing that they can improve is Mango lassi. We ordered one but it did not taste like Mango lassi at all.

Google
I had the pleasure of dining at this amazing Gujarati restaurant, and I must say, it was an unforgettable experience! I tried their Kathiyawadi Thali, and it was hands down the best I’ve ever had. The highlight of the meal was the Bajra na Rotla—fresh, warm, and perfectly paired with traditional sides like undhyu, Gujarati kadhi, and the delightful mohanthal for dessert.

Yelp
The food was good and they were able to accommodate Jain restrictions for one member of our group. Everything came out quickly although they forgot about one drink (we had to ask them to remove it from our check). The amount of curry in the combo dish was a little small, but whatever was there was fresh and flavorful.

Yelp
Would probably choose another Indian restaurant from all the nearby options. Chaat was a bit stale. Paneer dosa was good, I liked the sambar and chutney. Thalis were just okay but we all loved the cheesy Italian samosas.

Yelp
One my favorite vegetarian indian place. I love the Thali and Kati rolls! It great indian fast food place. We have also catered from them numerous time, and everytime no complains!

Eknath D.

Yelp
We have been visiting them for 40 years, ever since they opened. Simple Indian restaurant with great Gujrati and Kachchi food. South Indian as well as Punjabi dishes also very good. They have catered for us for many big and small events, 3 day convention attended by 2,500 people at the Long Beach Convention Center, our daughter's wedding reception attended by 700 guests at Hyatt Regency and even some backyard Graduation Dosa party! No nonsense simple food with very good service.

Yelp
I gave kudos to a restaurant who put efforts to make dishes vegan. Especially for a vegetarian restaurant like this which most of the time to make things vegan are just taking a few easy steps. We enjoyed their Gujarati Thali and dosas. Their dessert Kaju Katli was veganized without milk or ghee. Their Dhokla is so soft and yummy. Love it!!! Their food are spicy (curries and sambhar) but we like it and can take it. The menu is marked on which items can be veganized. It cannot get better than that. We will be back!!!!

Yelp
Jay Bharat catered our elementary school's Open House event. Everyone loved the food and has asked for us to have them return. In the future.

Yelp
It was getting late but my pregnancy cravings for Dabeli were at a ridiculous high... my husband was able to find a vegetarian Indian place that had all of our faves! And let me tell you, the Dabeli hittt the spotttt! (As did the other 2 items!) pav bhaji was delicious, saying it's one of my favorite dishes and my mother's is my favorite, this still fulfilled the authentic taste and flavor. They made it relatively quickly and Uber eats was able to deliver within 45 mins. I would highly recommend this place for the chaat like foods!

Yelp
Excellent food. Very homely ambiance and simple menu. Seevice is quick and straightforward. This is the no-nonsense Indian restaurant that serves authentic Indian food that you'd expect to get at someone's home cooked by their mom. Very comforting. Undhiyu was amazing. This is something you don't find in any other Indian restaurant across SoCal. Must vist.

Timothy D.

Yelp
Truly one of the best in this part of town. Over the years they have held it down as the most consistent and tastiest options around. If you're looking for something new to try, the Gujarati Thali as it has a few curries, a sambar, rice, and deli treats offered as one meal. They cater to all diets and are as accomodating as one can be. They offer dine in seating and take out as well.
google avatar

Reshma A.

Yelp
We drove over an hour to eat the thali, and were a little disappointed. The puris did not taste like home, and the veggies were a little too oily. The dal and the vaal on the other hand were very good. The dosa was also alright.
google avatar

Kirit S.

Yelp
It's best if you can eat at the restaurant itself, because taking Bhel Puri to go will have them packing the various "components" separately. That's fine, but much better if you can have them mix it and give it to you. Lots of things to go as well. I buy a lot each time I stop by here.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere and good weather and staff. People were great, friendly and professional. Service was fast and great

Mike K.

Yelp
It was our first time, and two of the three of us didn't know Indian food very well. The staff were very friendly and the food was fantastic! Priced seemed fair for the quantity and quality.
google avatar

Yelp
Good veg Eatery. Everything was made to our liking. (Your mileage may vary) Plenty to choose from. We not only ate but packed some to go on the way out.

Yelp
Every time I'm in Artesia I come here for Gujarati snacks and light bites. The samosas are perfectly crispy on the outside and filled with spiced potatoes and peas. Also pictured is the paper dosa with various chutneys.
google avatar

Shivesh K.

Yelp
Top quality Guju thali, all veg options available, the dosa was even great. Sweets and snacks are sufficient for most tastes.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing food! Consistently some of the best Indian food I've had the chance to eat. Amazing service as well!

Yelp
Wow, having eaten that meal, I feel like I've been transported to Gujarat, India. The quality of the food was so excellent, and as a carnivores we didn't expect to feel satisfied, but satisfied we were. And just so excellent from the appetizers to the dessert. The prices might be a little bit higher than your average Indian fare, but the quality of the food is worth it. Appetizers Potato Samosas- (4) piping hot and great taste. 4.5/5 taste. Soft, delicate, fluffy. $6.99 White Dhokla (7-9 pieces) $6.99 we tried these upon seeing a previous review. First time having a Dhokla. Like a steamed rice cake but more like blocks of fluffed polenta- they were buttery, and came with a nice vegetable curry/soup. Main Gujarat Thali $17.99 I'm Not sure if Thali means "banquet" But that's what it feels like. You've got three different types of curries, And three different types of starches basmati rice, roti, and paratha (crispy thin chip like bread). On top of that you also have a small little Samosa like pastry ball, and a Dhokla like savory polenta like piece, a pumpkin soup, spicy pickles, and Raita. And on top of that you have a drink that's like a salty Lassi with fennel, tamarind and mint sauce, AND a thick lemon custard dessert. It was amazing array of items, and definitely one of the reasons we felt like we were transported in time and place. Mysore Marsala Dosa $11.99 This was Personally my favorite item. It was actually the first time I've ever had dosa, And yet I feel I will be disappointed the next time I have it if it is not here. The dosa was huge crispy and flavorful and it had a nice spicy spicy with a gummy thinness. We pondered on the possibility that crepes Originated in the Indian culture instead of the French culture. There was a lovely potato spice mixture inside and I love the orange sauce on the side that was kind of like a creamy tomato spicy sauce. I was also a white sauce that had some mustard seeds and curry leaves in it that was not too spicy but a nice change of pace. 7/5 taste! Dessert Sweet Roti (2 pieces) $6.49 These lovely Kruti or her about 5 inches each in diameter and filled with a sweet potato filling. It reminded me of roasted Japanese sweet potatoes. It came with a slightly salty yogurt sauce. 4.5/5 (my husband gobbled them up!) The almond sweet at the counter is divine. The bitter one- they warn you- is pretty bitter. But so delicious, and then the bitterness kicks you in the mouth. Service Don't know if they were different people or if it was kind of slow when we got there, but despite all of the bad reviews for service, I did not experience anything bad at all.

Yelp
I am not sure how I haven't reviewed this place as yet.this is one of my absolute favorite places for gujarati food. We always get the kathiawadi thali and the taste is authentic and the food is so delicious. The price for the quantity and variety of food is really reasonable. Their service is phenomenal and I always take some snacks specially the traditional farsan to go. If you want to try something different then visit this place - you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Shaili S.

Yelp
On our LA trip, we got a chance to try a lot different of places to eat, but Jay Bharat really hit the spot. We grabbed a Gujarati Thaali and a Kathyawadi Thaali to eat in our car - definitely a meal to remember. They packed everything up real nice, so all the food stayed warm and tasty. The Undhiyu and Shrikhand-Puri were just superb, and the Yam Vada was a hit with my husband. Only downer was trying to reach them by phone, we kept getting voicemail. But the food was so good, it made up for it. If you're craving authentic Gujarati grub in LA, do check out Jay Bharat.
google avatar

Neelam S.

Yelp
I've grown up having Jay Bharat food and catering at events so I always knew that they would be part of our wedding day in some capacity. They are so good at what they do, from delicious food to managing a catering order. Parth was particularly great to work with, as he was incredibly responsive, and had an attention to detail that is sometimes hard to find in other caterers. From our initial conversation, it was clear we were working with professionals. Parth worked with us to create a mostly Jain and Vegan menu that was loved by all of our guests, and they handled a week of venue change with utmost professionalism. Jay Bharat continues to be a juggernaut in Southern California Indian catering, and we were so happy with our experience with them.

Yelp
Gujarati thali and masala dosa. Sooo good! The former has much variety. The dosa also came with a lot of delicious dips. I came twice, was hesitant about customer service due to reviews and unable to get through via phone. However, they were so friendly, professional, helpful. Both times had enough street parking. I look forward to coming again!

Ramzan A.

Yelp
Great food. Their service gets a bit chaotic during busy days. Menu is excellent and the food is always fresh.

Yelp
Best Pav Bada here with the potato patty!! Great service and great food! I also get the shikhand from here to keep in my freezer because you never know when you get a craving, it never disappoints!

Mohib Q.

Yelp
While my family have been patrons of this store for more than 20 years, I've never seen such poor treatment of senior citizens until my last visit. The food - with a focus on Gujrati cuisine, Jay Bharat boasts dishes that focus on common snacks and vegetarian meals such as samosas, dhoklas, kachori and pav bhaji. Their servings are ample, but not grand so you'll find the sampling to be good for a somewhat hungry person. On this occasion we ordered off a special menu to the left of the cashier, offering a grouping of items - in this case garbanzo beans (which they forgot until I told them), three pieces of roti (about six inches in diameter), daal/lentil and a paneer vegetable curry. While I had hoped for adequate amounts, I found a very shallow tray with little to no offerings. I also found that the missing garbanzo beans became a monumental issue for the owners that went unaddressed to me for some time. They didn't even talk to me about the issue nor confirm it was one. I wish I could have liked them more, but I think their standards keep on going lower. They have a high quality for food, but with low quantities and high prices for their thali's I find that the customer is getting little in return. While others like this place for great gol gappas, sweets and appetizers, I don't think I'll be back anytime soon.
google avatar

Satya v.

Yelp
I ate Dahi Bada today and it was tasteless , cold, Vada was very hard , green chutney had no flavor, i felt i wasted my money and very difficult to digest felt very uncomfortable . I will not go there again

San M.

Yelp
Recent visit did not have good experience. Felt the food was reheated and served . Very disappointed - went with a lot of expectations
google avatar

Zeeshan Q.

Yelp
Pretty good good, the Gujurati Thali comes with a nice assortment of food, sides, and dessert. I personally love their masala dosas as it's not overloaded with potatoes, and they're not excessively spicy either. The daal and coconut chutneys are perfect sides, but the spicy chutney was way too spicy to handle.
google avatar

Ashwin A.

Yelp
Friendly , tasty, fast service , nice place to sit and buy some good Gujarati snacks. We tried thali, undhiyu and kachoris. They were all very tasty and sumptuous!
google avatar

Jennifer E.

Yelp
I go to Jay Bharath once a month to stock up on frozen curries, dal and samosas. It's less than a quarter of the price of eating out in West L.A. and just as good. My son eats the curries daily with a bowl of rice. It's perfect! The dosas, chai, idli's and mango lassi's are also excellent.
google avatar

R W.

Yelp
The people here are Shit. Service is beyond horrible. And they are CHEAP AF. The bad stars are what you should focus on. The good reviews are family or friends of the owner
google avatar

Pooja A.

Yelp
Delicious Gujarati food. Loved the thali. Undhiyu was okay. Rest items were very tasty - dal, khaman, kachori, shrikhand, paneer masala, puri & roti. We also tried the patra & papdi no lot which was good. Staff was helpful and friendly. Overall , an enjoyable experience.
google avatar

Divya M.

Yelp
Always loved coming here when I was doing wedding preparation. The Italian Samosas are hands down the best item. I also love their Dahi Puri, vada pav, and dabeli. Really you can't go wrong with any of their food - everything is delicious!
google avatar

Monty P.

Yelp
Service is subpar. Food bland and highly overrated. I am never quite sure why this place is put on such a pedestal. There are so many terrific places in Artesia that really make an effort to put out really high quality flavorful food - this is unfortunately not one of them.

Anand V.

Yelp
Food was strictly ok. Dabeli was ok. A bit flavorful but was not like some of the good ones I have had Vada pav was ok. A tad too spicy Dani dev puri was not that good.

Malathy K.

Yelp
For how tasty this food is, I just hate to give a terrible review....but what kind of place puts so much peanuts in their dishes with zero mention of it anywhere! Peanuts are one of the most common allergies around, and my reaction is life threatening. If I didn't take my food to-go, I would have said something as I ate it seated there, however thankfully I was at home where I can take medicine to help to throat closing and chest tightness.

Susanna T.

Yelp
So delicious. A fast snack before going to the movies at Cerritos mall. Will go there again, for sure!
google avatar

Ritu R.

Yelp
It's all about the DOKHLA!!! They have the best dokhla EVERRR. Now that Surati serves mustard seed with a bit o khaman you really have to appreciate Jay Bharat for being true to the traditional recipe. Jay Bharat is a solid business, you gotta love their marketing, it's cute! Their food is really good but there's always room for improvement. I personally feel their coconut chutney could be more green and flavorful, just feels like something is "missing". Their Italian samosas are to die for, but overpriced, do yourself a favor and buy the frozen ones, you get more bang for your buck. As for customer service, i've struggled with it over the years but learned to deal with it. For those of you crying about it, can you think if a single snack shop that has ideal customer service? I rest my case. Don't bother calling them, they pretty much disconnected the phone.

Yelp
STEPH JUDGEMENT: Great variety of delicious vegetarian Indian food, reasonably priced. The hubby and I decided to try this place for dinner one night upon the recommendation of a friend and we were not disappointed. When I called to place the order, we were directed to their website, which turned out to be surprisingly great, with many customizable options. One bummer was that some of the items we saw in the menu photos were not available online, but very few. We went ahead and got the Gujarati Thali, Paneer Dosa, Bhel, and a sweet lassi. We were informed that the order would be ready in 30 minutes, and sure enough, when we arrived at the place we saw our order all packed up on one of the tables with our name on it. When we got the food home, it was like Christmas morning, with container after container of all kinds of wonderful food. Although we weren't familiar with most of the items we'd gotten, we enjoyed them all, and I was a particular fan of the paneer dosas. There was plenty left over to enjoy for a couple of days after, and we are definitely going back to try more items!

Food L.

Yelp
Excellent traditional Gujrati thali and sweets. We had the Kathaiwadi thali (check photo) Gujrati thali , Punjabi thali & paneer dosa. All Thalia are reasonably priced & came with a variety of food. Our son loved his dosa. Their mithai looked good but we were too full to try anything else. We had left overs. The place is clean. Staff was very friendly.

Harina K.

Yelp
I get gluten free bajra roti every week from here. Love their dahi sev puri, kadi & kichdi. Very good customer service and fresh food.

Yelp
Ok i'm going to try and make this a fair review. I've come to Jay Bharat for years, particularly for their sambar and khaman I like to eat it a certain way with green chutney and tomato chutney together and that's the only way I like it. Previously, you could request some tomato chutney, even if it wasn't the default condiment for the dish. Now they won't even sell it to you (why? Makes no sense to me.) Then I ordered two orders of idli sambar which comes with the tomato chutney. I asked how I could get some extra tomato chutney for those dishes which do have a default tomato chutney condiment, and he kept repeating to me over and over and over, "We don't give tomato chutneys with the dhokla." I got so fed up with hearing it, I finally said "Sir you've already told me 10 times that you don't give tomato chutney with the dhokla and I understand that." He rudely replies that he'll tell me again an 11th time because I am the one that's confused. That really pissed me off because it's such a rude thing to say. If he was even halfway smart, he wouldn't be actively alienating his long-term customers. Stop telling people what condiments they should have with their dish. Just give them what they want. I wasn't asking for anything for free. I offered to pay for it about five times, and each time he would repeat, "We don't give tomato chutney with the dhokla." I finally just got tired of trying to explain to him what I was asking for and that I wasn't asking for anything free. I just told him to go ahead with the order. I've always liked their sambar and I've always made trips from Orange County, and now Sherman Oaks where I live, just to come here for their food. And that's the attitude you want to give? Time to find a new place where the restaurant manager isn't acting like a dictator! Frankly, Surati Farsan's food is better and their staff is nice to their customers. I go there for everything else except for sambar and khaman. I'm fairly certain though, that there are other places that will not only make it better, but won't add an unnecessary side of rudeness along with the food.
google avatar

Daniel T.

Yelp
Oh. My. Goodness. The potato samosas are a slice of heaven. Medium sized. Thin, flaky crust and savory ingredients that are seasoned to perfection. So good. However, service is definitely not their strong suit. I agree with the other reviews.
google avatar

Reina P.

Yelp
It wasn't by design but pure coincide that we found ourselves in Artesia on two consecutive weekends. And I'm enjoying trying out the (shock!) vegetarian fare. Who am I? I guess if I had to do vegetarian, Indian vegetarian is the way to go. Just as the last week, I had the masala dosa which probably was an unusual pick as Jai Bharath is a Gujarati establishment and specializes in Gujarati dishes, especially thalis. I wasn't feeling Gujarati though so stuck with the Dosa. I liked elements of it. I liked the tomatoes mixed in with the potato filling. It was also more spiced than Bhima's version. Surprisingly, the sambhar, a South Indian dish, was better here. The coconut chutney passed but had a watery consistency. The onion tomato chutney was wrong on so many levels. If they could bring the Bhimas' chutneys, I'd be very happy but alas, that cannot be. We also had the bhel puri which was alright. Nothing to rave about. I must say the star of the show was the delightful mohanthal which came with my husband's thali order. It was my first time trying this sweet and I would describe it like a mysorepak but not as sweet. I'd go back just for that. The service was okay. They did make it very clear that they were shutting down by staring us down. To be fair, we did come in 30 mins before they closed but maybe less staring and glaring next time? I'd recommend trying this place. Maybe it won't blow your socks off but you'll get your vegetarian fix.

Christine L.

Yelp
I've been eating here for a couple years cuz it's a nice reliable joint for Indian food in an informal casual atmosphere. Their thali plate is really fun to eat in person. There was a time the spice level affected my bowels but I keep coming back regardless lol. I've always eaten there in person and during covid I've eaten at outside tables. I even ordered takeout recently on some dhal and takeout only dishes and they're good. Staff always great, nice and patient.
google avatar

Shazia B.

Yelp
Authentic tasting but mild, it's a hole in the wall feel but clean and comfortable. Order at the counter, service is just right. Good choice for Punjabi, Indian and middle eastern flavor profiles.

Yelp
Best gujrati food.Travel from SFV twice a month to Artesia . Service is always great and food is consistent . Love all their dosas . Everything is delicious and their sweets especially around Diwali time are wonderful.

Momar O.

Yelp
The food is really amazing here, HOWEVER, they are beyond rude. I do not know why they are the way they are, but whenever I call or come in to order my food, I get the rudest and meanest individuals to help me. Due to this very reason I opt to not come here. Example: placed a phone order the man was so rude and I was confirming the time for the food to be ready and he stated "I said 15 minutes didn't I". Oh lord that sh*t threw me overboard. Anyway, If you are looking to come here, try the "chole puri"- pretty good

I haven't been to Jay Bharat since 2020 when, like most, I survived on takeout. At that time, everything was cooked to perfection, almost homemade. I recently took a few friends to try Gujarati food for the first time. I was excited for them to try a few of my favorites; however, I was disappointed with the quality of the food and the portion size. The restaurant has made several changes (probably due to cost control) and it's not the same as years past. Sigh!
