"This restaurant and inn has plenty of history behind it — ask a bartender about flipping through their scrapbook of “haunted” encounters. The French dip is the must-order. Soups, onion rings, garlic wings, and assorted bar food items are safe bets, but the restaurant also has more ambitious entrees and monthly specials. The dining room area is quaint, but the tavern is more festive and often filled with chatty travelers watching sports, along with a crackling fireplace. There’s also a big patio — as well as a goat or two hanging out in a barn off the parking lot. Closed Sundays." - Missy Frederick

"Might I recommend the Jean Bonnet Tavern, a historical bar in nearby-ish Bedford: it’s got a crackling fireplace, an excellent French dip, a history of ghosts, and two pet goats hanging out next to its parking lot." - Missy Frederick

Stopped here to grab dinner on our way home from vacation. The historic vibe is great. The property has lovely landscaping and a beautiful kitchen garden, along with goats! I had the crab cake sandwich and it was full of chunks of crab meat and almost no filler. my husband had the salmon topped with crab and shrimp and said it's still as delicious as the first time he had it years ago. Beautiful outdoor space too, but it fills up quick.

My wife and I had dinner at the restaurant under the tavern. It is a beautiful location, historical feel/smell/ambiance, and smiling patrons and waitresses and waiters. Mary served us and was wonderful. My wife had a salad and I had the crab/shrimp topped salmon. For a local place it was enjoyable. It is more of an experience than a 5 star restaurant, however, still a wonderful place for a meal with over 250 years of history with it. Highly recommend if you’re visiting, if not for the food, then for the history of the tavern. Thank you!

Salmon was cooked to perfection. Ben , our server was knowledgeable and attentive. Hostess and manager were very welcoming. Staff worked very hard to provide excellent service and food. Thank you Brandon Callihan for such an enjoyable meal. Restaurant business is difficult these days and your customer service was top notch.

I should have scrolled past the first couple of good reviews. Food is average at best. Really not much to choose from in the area so I can see why the good reviews. What we had was edible and it seems to be one of those places where there are things they are good at and some things they are not so good at. Staff was great but I go for the food. Rolls were stale, they should have thrown them in the oven to try and revive them. The crab corn chowder was a pile of potatoes in a shallow dish with Old Bay sprinkled on top, didn't have noticable crab in it, really needed to be thinned out with milk. It was more like a pile potato salad than a soup or chowder. Bourbon carrots were plain, even a TINY bit of bourbon would be very noticeable, they are just throwing stuff together without tasting and adjusting what they are serving. When my wife questioned/mentioned that the salad dressing was sour tasting, we were told the brand. Bottom shelf brand. I expect more than below average ingredients from a restaurant.

What a wonderful historic restaurant this is. Food is delicious, the service, especially our server Mikayla, is top notch. The entire staff is friendly and courteous and could not have been nicer. I recommend this highly.

Always stop there when we can. I'm in love with the bison burger. Their raised just miles away and very fresh. Everything else I've tried was great, too. The over 250 year old tavern is amazing with a lot of history

The following is the feedback that I sent privately to the restaurant prior to posting this review in an attempt to give them the opportunity to correct the situation before making a public review. I received a rude message back from the owner standing by his decision to serve the butt end of the cut of meat and calling it med-rare. He also stood by his staffs handling of the situation and is clearly okay with staff arguing with customers. I highly recommend you steer clear of supporting this poorly run business. Here was my feedback that was ignored: We had a terrible experience. I ordered a medium/rare prime rib… a pricy cut of meat. I was brought the butt end of the prime rib. Anyone who knows anything about meat understands that the most well done cuts are from the end with the pink, less cooked meat being found towards the center. My husband kindly asked our waiter for a medium rare piece of meat. Our waiter, Josh, was honestly such a sweetheart and I feel bad he has to work with such terrible leadership. Josh took the plate to a manager, Faith, who brought it back to our table and argued with me stating the cut was rare and couldn’t be any more rare, she said it was not possible. Her tone was ridiculous. I tried to explain to her that a mid rare cut has a pink center, this piece has 0 pink. She continued to argue. I told her to just forget it. She still charged me $9 for a baked potato. We simply paid our bill and left not wanting to cause anymore issues for Josh. I feel bad enough he has to work with that horrible manager. In the future you need to work on your leadership and customer service. Growing up in a restaurant my parents always stressed customer satisfaction and quality food. Neither was accomplished. We will not be back anytime soon which is sad considering we’ve spent a lot of money here in the past. Please have an intervention with your management team. This is simply unacceptable.

We met our cousins here for a quick lunch last month and it was quite an experience! The food and service were first class and our server was terrific! It is just off the PA turnpike, if you have a chance, dine here as you won’t regret it. We plan to stop back when we get the chance.

Yelp
This place was very interesting. The food was great and the atmosphere was outstanding. The service was excellent as well.

Yelp
For years I have driven on the PA Turnpike and drive past this beautiful building, thinking, someday I want to eat there. Last night I stayed at a nearby Hampton Inn BECAUSE it was close to this place. I ate in the Tavern, the bartender was lovely, friendly attentive, got me a glass of wine immediately! Yay, I thought... I had the corn and crab soup, and prime rib with baked potato and broccoli. The "soup" was not only like warm, but was like a clump of cream, lumpy-like it needed a cup of milk. Then the dinner came on a metal (putter) plate, which I assumed would be hot but it wasn't. The baked potato was ice cold as was the broccoli. I don't expect Prime Rib to be hot, it rarely is. It was cooked perfectly, just not presented well. Someone (kitchen or bartender) should have noticed the cold plate and the fact that the butter in the potato didn't melt at all- clear sign it's cold I was starving so I ate it, but WOW! All those times I passed by and thought how wonderful it would be to eat there. $34 for Prime rib that would have coast half at Texas Roadhouse I guess they've been around so long they've lost touch. I know I should Have said something and I regret that I didn't, I was starving.

Yelp
Ambience and atmosphere, it's clearly a four or five. The place has an amazing history that's worth checking out. Food wise it was only a 3. Burger and Crab Cake sandwich were luke warm, and could have been tastier. Butter and toast the buns, make the crab cake a patty and not a meatball that I had to squish down The Berry Tart was ice cold, just out of the refrigerator. Part of the crust was still frozen. Served warmed, it could have been excellent. We complained to the waitress, and she just offered "that's how we serve it". Upon leaving the hostess asked how was our experience? I said just ok, and explained. She said the waitress could have warmed it...and that was it. No apology, simply nothing. We walked away with the impression they just didn't care about our experience.

Yelp
Do I make exceptions for charm or atmosphere over food quality?? This is a rare occasion. If the food was good, it break the spell that has u convinced u just crawled in from a snowy battle, looking to hunker down w/ some cider & potted meat. I was ready to dry my breeches & waistcoat over the smokey cauldron when looked down & realized I'm in sneaks & yoga pants. Thick stone walls, candlesticks, wood burning fire, smoke in the air- it truly feels like another time. Don't expect a gourmet meal or even food that makes sense. I ordered a filet sandwich- they literally put a whole filet on a hamburger bun, then asked if I wanted a side of ketchup or mayo for it. And I ate it, along w/ the salad dressed in interesting vinaigrette of chopped eggs & beets. The Oatmeal Pie knocked my socks off. It was truly good, olde tyme, & melted my heart that staff shared the recipe. These are good people. If you're looking for a killer meal- go elsewhere. This is a great place for some drinks & and lite bites in a truly unique setting.

Yelp
After passing this establishment over 100 times , we stopped in for dinner. This building had been here approximately since 1762 and was a French fort & trading post! With that said, it is not totally handicap accessible. Neat historic feel, good food selection that was very delicious. 3 miles from the Pennsylvania Turnpike entrance - exit 146 ( Bedford)

Yelp
From research I've done on the Bedford area, I could tell that the Jean Bonnet Tavern was an institution, and now I know why. It's got long-term staff who enjoy working with each other, a standard Americana menu, and a charming location. When I stopped for lunch on my way from Baltimore to Pittsburgh I sat inside / downstairs, where you can see the original stone walls and fireplace, and there are beautiful quilts hanging up. I had looked at the menu ahead of time and knew I wanted the chowder + a side salad so that I would have room for strawberry pie for dessert. While I was a little disappointed that the pie is half whipped cream (my husband's is 100% strawberries), I overhead another patron asking the waitstaff to save her a piece, as she wanted to make sure it wouldn't run out before she got some! After I paid, the hostess invited me to take the winding staircase upstairs to check out the tavern and the outdoor seating on the balcony, as well as the inn rooms upstairs from that. I also wandered through the gift shop (too many pretty things!) and visited the goats. Although there's a big flat parking lot, the tavern does not appear to be handicapped accessible. Sex-segregated restrooms.

Yelp
Had heard good things about Jean Bonnet's Tavern for a while and figured we would stop through for dinner while passing through Bedford. The atmosphere feels like you're being transported back in time, with the waitress brining you to your table and lighting the taper candle in a pewter holder in the center of the table. The food itself was alright and nothing spectacular. I ordered the crab cake sandwich, which comes with no sides, as the case with all of the sandwiches. The bun on which it was served was a bit disappointing and didn't feel like it was adding anything to the dish other than being a mechanism to transport the crab cake from the plate to my mouth. The French onion soup was good, though the $7 price tag seemed a bit high for the serving size, which I felt was true for all menu prices. Service was fast and our waitress Karen was very friendly. We originally came in upstairs and was told there would be a 30 minute wait to sit upstairs, but they could seat us right away in the cellar, so we ended up sitting down there.

Yelp
My wife and I were pleasantly surprised with our visit to the Jean Bonnet Tavern. We went on the recommendation of a tour guide at the nearby Omni Bedford Springs Resort. The building is clearly historic, which you can read about on their website and at the restaurant itself. Sadly, we didn't get to explore more of the building or visit the gift shop, due to timing. We enjoyed the variety of specials the restaurant was featuring on a weeknight. From the features, we tried the mushroom soup and stuffed chicken. From the regular menu, we had the french dip (recommended by our server) and the peanut butter pie. Everything was very tasty and exceeded expectations. Our server Caden was extremely kind, helpful, and attentive. He provided great service despite dealing with a large party near ours that sent back all of their food for one reason or another, with the father loudly throwing a fit about it. The only mark against them is charging a fee for credit card users. If the difference that fee makes is the make it or break it for your business, there's a bigger problem that needs addressing.

Yelp
Jean Bonnet Tavern is historic tavern in Bedford, PA on the National Register of Historic Places dating back to the 1760s that just oozes charm...this is the kind of place I gravitate towards and look forward to for a unique dining experience. The atmosphere in the restaurant is a solid 5/5 with candlelit tables and brick walls that transport you back in time. While the online ratings had me hopeful for both great atmosphere and decent dining experience, the food was sadly underwhelming. We both went with chicken sandwiches (one grilled and one fried) and a side of onion rings. I'd rate the food as a 2.5/5 at best. The chicken was fine, but fairly bland and not much flavor. The buns were very odd in texture and weren't tasty at all, falling apart while we were eating our sandwiches. The onion rings were a disappointment as they weren't drained properly, so arrived at the table soaked with oil, which made them unappetizing. Perhaps I caught them on an off day in the kitchen, but the food left much to be desired. Service was friendly and on point. I would recommend Jean Bonnet Tavern to those traveling between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh who like unique and historic places, but I'm not inclined to take the detour off the PA Turnpike to return based on my dining experience.

Yelp
OK, how cool is it to eat in a place that has been serving food longer than we have been a nation?!! I saw this a year or two ago on a trip east to pick up antique auto parts, but was unable to fit a stop in, but it was on my radar. This year brought me back thru after picking up o a 1927 Model T Ford. I planned my timing as to be able to have lunch here. I chose to sit outside, but think that an indoor seating would have been just as nice. I started with a gin and tonic, you know, to take the edge off of hours of driving.... The table next to me had French Onion Soup that smelled wonderful, but I was craving a burger, but the filet mignon sandwich won out.( this is where being nice to people pays off. The table of two gentlemen next to me had done something that anger the server, I was minding my own business, and being polite. Let's just say, my service was better than theirs.) I was able to sub a small French Onion soup, something I was told they didn't do, for my French fries. THe Steak sandwich came out after the soup, with a second g&t, cooked to perfection. I can't wait to bring my bride with me to explore the part of the great state on Pennsylvania. We will most certainly plan for a more intimate indoor dining experience here when we are together.

Yelp
Excellent food right off the PA Turnpike. Set in an old Civil war farm house with a bar upstairs and a great gift shop in the small building next door. Also has 11 rooms for an overnight stay. Beautiful setting in Central PA. A must stop location

Yelp
A fun and historic tavern that if a must visit if you're in the area. We were passing through and stayed the night nearby in a hotel, so we popped in here for dinner. The staff was very welcoming, and we had a short wait, but they had a fun store and some adorable goats we could feed, so it was very easy to kill time on site while we had the short wait. They called us as soon as a table was ready and our waitress was so helpful. We really enjoyed the food - the ravioli was exceptional, and the ambiance was one-of-a-kind for this area. I also purchased a small honey pot and an amazing smelling candle from the shop on site. Overall: A+ Feed the goats, visit the shop, eat some great food and enjoy the venue!!

Yelp
Excellent meal. Creative menu. Delicious house dressing. Glazed Pork chop was amazing. Oatmeal pie very unique. Very interesting surroundings to view. Highly recommend!

Yelp
The food was good and the location is good! I was so excited to try this place and we were at a festival nearby. I was quite disappointed with the not so good service but it was very crowded due to the large crowds from the festival. I'll definitely give it another go.

Frankie R.

Yelp
My mushroom soup had a weird flavor no mushroom flavor only had 2 bites sat it aside. My sisters French onion soup was VERY SALTY. The steak sandwich was so chewy not tender at all with no flavor. Above all else I think our experience was worse due to the fact our waitress took our order got our stuff and never returned to see how everything was or refill our drinks. We came 2 hours away to be totally disappointed.

D W.

Yelp
The building is beautiful, the service was great. I ordered the steak, don't know that I would do that again it was very tough almost like rawhide. But I will certainly be back and order something else.

Lindsey H.

Yelp
Came in for the first time! What a wonderful setting. This place is worth the visit itself just because of the history. The lunch was liked by everyone. I would recommend the crab cake sandwich. Just wish they had remoulade, but the tartar did the job. The fresh cut fries were also very good. We also enjoyed seeing the goats on the way out.

Janet M.

Yelp
So sad that I dug right in and didn't get a picture of anything but the food was fantastic. The service was great on a busy Friday evening. I had crab cakes, they were very good, who ever heard of crab cake served up with a large ice cream scoop! I also had the crab and corn chowder, which was very good and I would never have thought was sweet. I ate every bit.

Abigail g.

Yelp
Now here's a spot worth stopping! Everything we had was very tasty and hit the spot. It was prefectly close to the highway for those passing by. The pet goats were highlight! A cute little bed and breakfast with a home-y tavern included. Diane was very sweet and tentative. I enjoyed chatting with her! Highly recommend the soups! Impressed with the French dip as well as the burger!

Joanna I.

Yelp
My friend and I planned a weekend trip to Bedford and found this absolute gem. The interior is extremely cozy and the staff were welcoming. Our waiter was friendly and timely. We ordered the crab cake sandwich, bacon-wrapped scallops, artichoke & spinach dip, tomato bisque soup, and the crispy pork. The crab cake sandwich was divine and was served with a white bread. The crispy pork was served with a drizzle of honey, balancing the sweet and savory elements of it. Would definitely come back to try other items!

Scott P.

Yelp
Love this place. Great staff, great food, comfortable atmosphere. Plus they have goats you can feed! Icing on the cake. Loved my soup and my burger. The French dip was amazing. Beautiful location and gift shop. Nice craft beer selection. If you're in the area you have to stop! They offer a bed and breakfast too.

Juan H.

Yelp
We have visited multiple times. Runs as a bed and breakfast with a large bar and a dining room. On the pricier end but worth a visit.

Yelp
Just west of Bedford, Pennsylvania is the Jean Bonnet Tavern. We read about this restaurant and decided we wanted to have dinner here since we were staying in the area for 3 days. This is a very old historic tavern severing travelers since the mid-1700's. Can you just imagine all that this tavern has seen over the years? I would imagine there are a few ghosts here. The tavern is renowned for its old-world charm, history, rustic decor and great food. We had made a reservation before we left Baltimore. When we arrived, our table was ready for us. As with most restaurants today because of the pandemic, they do not have enough wait staff. We did not mind; we were not in any hurry. Marissa, our server, was an absolute delight even though we knew she was stressed about everything. She took excellent care of each and everyone one of us. We asked for separate checks by couple and she managed to keep us all straight. Three in our party had the special of Chicken Cordon Bleu and declared it the best they ever had, one had the Tavern Crab Cake, one had the Turkey Club Croissant, and I had Tavern Onion Soup and the special Fall Salad. We all thoroughly enjoyed our dinners and the service given by Marissa. Just outside the restaurant is a charming and inviting gift shop where you can shop till you drop amid a wide selection of interesting items.

Mitch P.

Yelp
My wife and I love going here. It's been a bit hit or miss the past few times we've been. But the food is generally on point. They have a fairly large beer selection and some of the specialty cocktails they offer are good, but they seem to struggle on some of the basics like making a good Old Fashioned. The service is great and we've never had a negative experience with staff. The atmosphere is cozy downstairs; however, if you grab a seat upstairs by the bar, things can get a bit loud. The patio is nice in the summertime, but fills up quick. Overall, this is a great place to eat.

Brian H.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, cool building. Don't sit at any table that you can see when you walk in, the doors are breezy and you will be cold. Food is a 3 at best. Salads are mostly iceberg lettuce with some dark greens. Dressing was good. Soup, the butternut squash was very good. Prime rib was Luke warm, little tough, and cooked far past medium rare. When cutting it you shake the table tough. The sage pesto was ok, missing a few ingredients like dates and it wasn't really a pesto. More like Alfredo with sage. Service was ok, forgot the bread. I would suggest repeating the order to make sure you have it right before making mistakes.

Vicki R.

Yelp
Jean Bonnet Tavern is my favorite restaurant around! I have never had a bad meal. The service there is amazing! The atmosphere is great. I can't say anything bad about the Tavern. To me they are the best around. Their steaks are amazing their Lobster Ravioli is to die for the appetizers are great and their salads with their house dressing are the best! Go enjoy dinner at the Jean Bonnet. You won't be disappointed.

Owen M.

Yelp
Historic colonial tavern with a quaint gift shop on premises. Food and drink were better than expected, the prime rib portions are gigantic!

Connie T.

Yelp
Food is always delicious and a cut above. I had squash bisque soup last evening and was very impressed. Also had Asian Salmon Salad which was very tasty. My husband had apple butter crispy pork and he thought it was different and good. We have family in the area & try to make it here at least once every time we visit. Always a delectable surprise when we come. Our waitress, Gwen, was efficient and helpful with our choices for our delicious meal. The chairs are comfortable bentwood hickory, which is furniture pretty unique to the area. The interior is the original stone. The interior is cozy & quaint made to mimic the revolutionary period.

Yelp
Jean Bonnet Tavern proved to be the predatory tavern where customers come last. Before I begin this review, I want to say that I spent $160 at their gift shop and I found that area to be clean and enjoyable. After shopping at the gift store, the wife and I decided to venture inside for a steak dinner. At the front door, we were greeted by a sign that said there would be an additional charge for people who payed using a card. As a business owner, I know that is against the card company policies so I was shocked, and mostly because it was so laughable that, in 2023, anyone would greet customers with that nonsense. I have never seen any restaurant put themselves at odds with the convenience of customers at the front door. It's unimaginable and bad business. That said, I decided to give them a chance. With modern tipping rates and prices, I expected to spend about $150 for a dinner for two, and I had the cash to avoid their extra charges for what every other company in the world builds into the menu price. The restaurant area was clean but did have a sour odor, which I attributed to a guy who seemed to be spraying some chemical on the tables, which he wiped down, all the with same dirty rag. That said, it was seat yourself and I found what looked like a clean table. The waitress came to the table and asked what we wanted to start with. I asked if they had a hard cider and I was told yes, so I ordered that and my wife ordered a beverage too. When the cider arrived, it tasted old and stale, very much like weak, watered down apple juice and hints of old vinegar and very little carbonation. I explained that the drink was disappointing and asked to switch to a draft beer. What happened next was probably foretold by their ridiculous sign on the front door. The waitress said that if I would have taken the time to read a card that was wedged into a holder on the tabletop, I would have known that there are no refunds or exchanges. She shifted the responsibility to me to know that if I disliked the cider, I could buy an alternate beverage but I would still have to pay for the distasteful cider beverage. Really? Can you imagine being told you have to pay to exchange a beverage that is, frankly, just plain gross. The waitress was not pleasant or unpleasant about it. She was just factual and she probably hated to be in that position because it clearly creates a predatory relationship between the business that insists they can provide any putrid product they want and the customer who must then pay for anything brought to the table, no matter how gross. I quickly realized they could bring me a rotten steak and they would expect me to pay for it, and that from the tavern's perspective, they are only interested in pricing strategies that focus purely on profit without any regard to the customer's experience -- getting money at any cost, even if they lose a lifetime customer, seems to be their approach to business. And this is what happened, because while I am new to the area, and will drive by there regularly, I'll never put my foot back in their door. I suggest you pass on this one. It's just not worth it, in 2023, to support a business that has no regard for their customers. It starts at the front door, and it doesn't get better. They just don't care. And if you are going to spend money, it's better spent supporting eateries that put customers first. There are many great places to spend your money. Don't spend it here.

Yelp
I booked the Jean Bonnet Tavern for a long weekend getaway for my mom's 60th birthday a couple years ago. It was an awesome place to stay and super affordable! Breakfast each morning was super delicious and we also had my mom's birthday dinner there--steak dinners with all the trimmings and cheesecakes for dessert. It's super affordable and colonial which I appreciated. It even has history tagged to it with George Washington and his troops stopping here over a whiskey tax. This was the perfect place to stay and absolutely a treat!

Yelp
Discovered Jean Bonnet Tavern (c. 1762) just on the outskirts of Bedford while staying at the Bedford Springs Resort. We had a nice dinner in the cozy lower level restaurant. The upstairs tavern was lively and it also has a small inn with nice-looking accommodations, albeit right next to a the turnpike. The food was good, but the portions were mighty and my dish was drowned in sauce. We shared fried Brie, which was a tasty first. Dan had crab cakes and I ordered lobster ravioli smothered with scallops, shrimp and crab sauce. Another beautiful birthday dinner on the books. Next time we'll go with more pub-like expectations of the food and order differently, but the atmosphere has a ton of colonial character. There was a small, free-standing gift shop that we did not have a chance to poke into, but peering through the windows, it looks like they carry cute stuff. I Jean Bonnet in general, especially as an alternative to eating on resort. We'll definitely return to check out the tavern.

Yelp
We were on our way home from DC and the reviews were so great that we decided to drive the 10 minutes away from the freeway to try it. What a great decision! What great food, Great service and Great ambience. It was amazing!! To be eating in a tavern that had been a tavern since 1792 and that George Washington visited was a bonus. We will be sure to stop here when passing by on Rt 76! Enjoy!

Yelp
Utterly charming. Satisfying takes on familiar favorites, Rich and flavorful. Enjoyed a hearty lunch but my eyes were bigger than my stomach--worth it!

Yelp
I'm astounded at the abundance of five star reviews this restaurant garners at this site, but I'm hardly about to join that chorus. I visited there this past Thursday on the strength of all the "gushing" reviews as well as learning that it was once considered amongst the top ten restaurants in Pennsylvania. I entered the essentially empty restaurant (solo; "passing through") at about 8PM. After being seated, the waitress comes and asks what would I like. I said Prime Rib. "We're out of it". So I said Rib Eye steak, never asking me how would I like it done? So here comes the food and my wine. I will acknowledge the broccoli was fine, and so were the French Fries. The steak? I've had better at the likes of a Cracker Barrel. Overdone, looked like it had been tenderize with a mallet. I ate about half of it. Now it's time to settle up and be gone. First a pitch to stay with them in our charming rooms (no sale; when I travel "the best surprise is no surprise"). Now the "we don't take American Express", so I used a bank card. Hey "you represent to be a higher class establishment; isn't American Express part of that scene?" To add insult to injury, they tack on a "credit card service fee". Hey, just build the cost of credit cards into your menu prices, save your customers from this nickel and dining. After all, who pays with cash nowadays? All told, a severe disappointment.

Yelp
Dining Area atmosphere is very unique. Not too loud, not too quiet, Staff was friendly and attentive. I wish they would have mentioned the history of the restaurant more or engaged with us about it as this was our first visit. As for the food, it's mediocre at best. I had the french dip au jus & sweet potato fries. The prices are high dollar for the portion, the taste was bland. We also visited the gift shop. I don't recommend it. Super overpriced with things that aren't relevant to the business, the staff there was not friendly at all. Overall I wouldn't visit again.

Yelp
We loved dining at Jean Bonnet Tavern for lunch, and then exploring the log cabin gift shop afterward! The restaurant is cozy, dark, and features a real fireplace, plus candlesticks on the table. Full of history and charm. Very kid-friendly, too, though you might not immediately think so. Each element of our meal was excellent, from our starter salads/soups to the BBQ fried chicken sandwich and bison burger. My young child got the steak tips and fries kids meal which was a big hit and gave us leftovers to take home. At the gift shop we bought some earrings for a Christmas present, some chocolate, and -- surprise! a GIANT clock that is now featured on a big wall in our cabin home. We will think of our Jean Bonnet Tavern adventure each time we look at it for years to come.

Yelp
What a wonderful experience at this Tavern. The ambiance is as if one has gone back in time. Food is delicious and service is extraordinary. I would love to visit again. We ordered a chicken dish and it was so tender and the sauce was yummy . The fried Brie should not be missed . Enjoy y'all!!

Yelp
For being essentially out in the middle of nowhere, this is a great spot! Super great atmosphere where everything is historic and you really feel like youre enjoying a meal back in the 1800s. Arriving on a Saturday during COVID times, I was expecting there to be no issue in getting a table, but the place was PACKED! I waited about an hour for a table, so be sure to come ready to wait or at a weird time (I was there at 12:30pm). Food was delicious! I got a bison burger which was cooked to perfection (meaning not really cooked much at all - per my request), and the other food I snagged from friends' plates was also fantastic. Good beer selection and descent prices on both food and drink. Service was very nice and we never lacked in anything. If you are out driving around the country and want some good food and a fun experience, come here!! I should also note that they do indeed take credit cards (a previous review said it was cash only - it is not!!)

Yelp
Stopped here on our drive from OH to VA since this looked like a place where we could get something different than fast food fare. As we looked at the menu, we read the placemat about the history of the tavern which was very interesting. As we had lived for many years in Virginia and prior to that in Maryland, we really love crab. My wife chose the "Broiled Tavern Crab Cake Sandwich" while I chose a bowl of "Crab and Corn Chowder". The crab cake sandwich description said that it was "a house specialty loaded with jumbo lump and claw meat broiled to perfection". We have had many jumbo lump crab cake sandwiches and this has to rate as the worst one yet. There was barely any crab and it was definitely not lump crab. I would say that the breading (which should be minor in a lump crab cake sandwich) constituted well over 90% of the sandwich. My wife had to look very closely for any crab and very small pieces were scattered in the breading and what was there was definitely not lump crab meat. In addition, the hamburger bun that it was served on was stale. The cost of the sandwich is $16 without a side so we had to order a side to complement the meal. The same paucity of crab meat could be said about the crab and corn chowder. I found very little crab in the chowder which was mostly made up of potatoes. My wife ate very little of the sandwich while I went ahead and ate most of the chowder (since I was hungry). Perhaps other food items in the tavern are much better, but we were very disappointed in what we chose. We should have said something but we did not which was our mistake. The only reason that we gave a 2 star review was that the staff was very friendly and attentive.

Yelp
If you are traveling eastbound on the PA turnpike it is hard not to spot this tavern off to the right before you reach the Bedford exit. My husband and I decided to stop here and try it out. Currently they are not accepting reservations but they do have plenty of seating both indoor and outdoor following state Co-Vid guidelines. Masks are required when entering and exiting but not while dining. The tavern and lodging rooms have historical significance in that they date back to the time of Revolutionary War and served as a meeting place for over 500 men during the famed Whiskey Rebellion. The building was purchased by Jean Bonnet in 1779 and is now listed in the register of historic places. We were given a choice to sit either on the main dining floor or the Tavern floor. We choose the main room and sat down in a rustic style booth. Everything here is replicated to give you that "tavern feel" down to the very serving dishes you get your food with. We even had a burning candle at our table to bring back that early period feel. Pretty much everything here is ala carte and is a cash only establishment. We had a very friendly waitress who constantly attended to our needs. I decided to try their Tavern French onion soup and went with their fall seasonal salad. My husband had a turkey club salad and side salad. The soup was literally to die for! It was very good! I noticed we had to wait some time to get our mains but I figured since there were a lot of people visiting that I had to be patient. We finally got the salad and sandwich and the side salad. My salad was fresh and came with large pieces of cooked chicken breast. It was your typical salad but it was a generous portion. My husband enjoyed his sandwich and side salad. Afterwards the waitress brought the dessert tray for us to decide what we wanted. Since autumn is about to begin we decided to go with the pumpkin cake and split it. The cake came with whipped cream and tasted great. It had a bit of pumpkin pie mixed in to add to the flavor. It was spiced just right and splitting it was a good idea since we didn't want to be overwhelmed with dessert after a large lunch. After we ate we went to the gift shop located on the premises. Currently the gift shop is limited to 4 customers at a time and the lady at the register stands behind plexiglass when you go to pay. Cards here are also accepted as well as cash. Most of the gifts are local made or are items they probably have if you were to rent a room and spend the night here. I learned after we left that there is a goat farm on site but we didn't have the opportunity to go view it. All in all we had a great experience here and definitely will be on our bucket list to return if we find ourselves in the area again. Located on Rt 30 W of the town of Bedford, they have their own parking lot.

Yelp
An absolutely charming restaurant with amazing food and service! My husband and I stopped in for a late lunch/early dinner (linner) when we were in the area. The atmosphere is absolutely delightful. Our waitress was Karen B. and she was fantastic. Karen was friendly and has tremendous customer service skills. Our food (which was brought to us very quickly) was delicious and we both cleaned our plates. We are planning to come back next year for our 40th wedding anniversary and stay in a room upstairs. Karen gave us all the information to make reservations. Do not miss this restaurant!!

Yelp
Wow! Did not see the best French Dip sandwich on an amazing baguette I've ever tasted coming to me from an ancient 1762 Pennsylvania Tavern! Great menu and wonderful service! Diane was our waitress and she was welcoming, friendly and even offered excellent menu suggestions -- which we tried! All excellent! Great setting with a glimpse back into our nation's history!

Yelp
The food quality has gone down drastically over the last year. The last three meals I have had have been poor at best. Dried out meat and seasonings applied by a 5 year old. By adding a lot of new/different ingredients to an existing dish does not make it gourmet or better. The price point of this menu suggests quality, and it will soon become aware that it is just a suggestion. There are plenty of other places in Bedford to eat that will give you what you pay for.

Yelp
We stopped here on a cross state covered bridge fall tour. WOW! The restaurant is historic with great service. Right off the interstate. One if the best meals I've ever had. I ordered off the autumn menu and everything was very tasty. I will go back. You will not be disappointed!

Yelp
A dynamite, gold mine of a colonial tavern redo. Fun people, tepid french onion soup, but awesome wings, crisp celery and best of area ranch dressing Too notch, genuinely good service and astonishing array of local guests and travelers. If you are in the area, this is a must stop! The gift shop is elegant and worth a pop in. My tennis elbow felt so much better after visiting here. I will definitely be back!!!!
