Give the cashier that evening’s “special order” and you’ll be asked to take a seat until your name is called. Once it is, step back into a world of literary fantasy, where the menu is packed with drinks boasting creative presentations that are as much a part of the experience as the cocktails themselves. Try the appropriately named Open Sesame, made with bacon fat-washed Zacapa No. 23 Rum, pineapple cordial, pandan syrup, and lime. That’s because they’re waiting for their “order” to be called so they can step behind a nondescript curtain to Jekyll, the literary-inspired speakeasy hidden behind the bakery. The drink list isn’t so much a menu but a book, where excerpts from classic literary works accompany the cocktails they inspire. Many are mixed tableside by your server, who is equally well versed in literature and spirits.
