The 20 Best Ice Cream Shops In Chicago

"Jeni’s is originally from Ohio and there are a lot of locations in Chicago. We’re glad, since the ice cream here is outstanding. It’s rich and creamy, plus everything is made from scratch. And while you can buy pints of Jeni’s all over the place nowadays, the scoop shops are where you can find their homemade waffle bowls. The staple flavors (like brambleberry crisp) are very good, but we like the limited edition ones best, like the churro, with cinnamon ice cream and actual churro pieces blended in." - adrian kane, veda kilaru

Google
At Jeni’s Ice Cream, sweet delight, Where flavors dance in frozen light. With every scoop, pure joy is spun, A creamy treat for everyone. The taste? Divine. The craft? So fine. Each bite reflects a skill refined. Ingredients rich, the best around, In every spoonful, depth is found. Yet, oh, the chill! Too cold it seems, Ice crystals formed in chocolate dreams. A tiny flaw, a frosty sting, That dulled the joy this scoop should bring. But oh, the staff! So warm, so kind, With patience rare, and smiles aligned. They let us taste, explore, and see, Which flavors called so temptingly. A lovely stop, despite the frost, Where friendly charm is never lost. Perhaps next time, a softer freeze, Would bring perfection—sure to please.

Scoop shops are great for traditionally pint-only brands so you can try beforehand so you know what to buy at the grocery store. It's also great to try unique flavors that aren't sold in pints. Unfortunately none of the scoop flavors were unique (all sold nationwide in pints). It's a Midwestern 10 but for a discerning New Yorker, a 5. Hagen Daaz is far tastier despite being less inventive. Sometimes the classics win. The only showstopper is brown butter almond brittle but it's super rich and I've had it before. And I love the concept of small scoop to try more.... IF you charge prices according to the smaller scoops! For the size of these 2 half-scoops, $4.50-$5 is far more reasonable than 7.29 before tax ($8.03 WITH) which is coincidentally, MORE than a pint of Hagen Daaz!

Google
The smell in here alone will make you wanna smack your mama! They make their waffle cones and bowls in house which is why the aroma is mesmerizing.. if you’re not getting a waffle cone you’re missing half the experience. Really unique, creamy flavors, always so fresh and delicious. I’m all about the variety so I appreciate the half scoops so I can try more flavors. So far the gooey butter cake is still my fave, but all the flavors are amazing. It’s worth the hype.

Google
The ice cream was creamy and rich, with a perfect balance of flavors. You can also sample the different flavors before deciding on the ones you want.I chose the Browned Butter Almond Brittle flavor,Gooey butter and the nutty, caramel notes were absolutely divine. The 3 scoops were generous . I loved that the ice cream was made with high-quality, all-natural ingredients. Jeni's has definitely earned its reputation as a top-notch ice cream shop. I can't wait to try more flavors!

Google
Perfect for dates or family time with a little one.. They allow you to sample from the unique selection of flavors. They have a handful of dairy free options which is nice. I tried the burnt orange dreamsicle and a second flavor i can't pronounce or remember how to spell as it was Persian. The service is exceptional creating an enjoyable experience would try again for a date perhaps.

Google
Yummy cones and dishes of ice cream. They don't have sundaes, shakes, or toppings, just ice cream. I love that they're open so late!

My friend was craving some Jeni’s and I will say it hit the spot. The person that was serving us really gave suggestions and knew all the different flavors. I will say an item that is over looked is the drinks. I got the root beer and will say it was one of the best ones I have had in a while!

Google
I recently tried the wild berry lavender ice cream at Jeni's, and it was absolutely delightful! The combination of the fresh, juicy berries with the subtle floral notes of lavender creates a unique and refreshing flavor. The texture is creamy and smooth, making every bite a luxurious experience. It's a perfect treat for a hot day or whenever you're in the mood for something special. Highly recommend giving it a try!

Yelp
Scattered all over Chicago, you'd surely bump into Jeni's Ice Cream and you shouldn't bypass it. We hit up the one in Logan Square as it was walking distance from our stay. They do come up with unique flavors and seasonal ones. I had the Sweet Cream Biscuit and Peach Jam; it was light, almost sorbet-like but texture was something like a gelato. Yet the flavor is robust. I enjoyed it thoroughly. The place was super cute, and quite clean and the staff was patient with my kids trying new flavors and forcing me to do the same. Nice to meet you, Jeni.

Yelp
There was a long line to get in but it moved quickly. Staff was super friendly letting us taste ice cream and giving facts about each one. The flavors combinations were inventive and interesting. Loved the consistency of the ice cream but Protip...two half scoops is plenty. This ice cream is extremely rich.

Yelp
Mind you, I've seen their icecream at the groceries but never got them due to KETO. But.... Holy, moley!!! I'm addicted to their line of exotic ice creams! The texture, the flavors, the creations!!!!! So splendid! No wonder it's in the name! This place gets the "cheat day" savior card. (I only started trying their icecream since they have the Spring time collection, which is hard to want to not try!!!! With their seasonal toppings, "Space Dust!!!!" Nebula Berry Pint Buttercrisp Waffle Wedges Space Dust bambleberry. I had the best sampling in a long while. I've put my KETO research aside. For this, the summer experience of flavors that are so natural and pleasing to the taste. Very good service where they allow you and explain the flavors, which got me much more hyped. I don't feel as heavy or sick from this sugar content (with guided servings) but this for sure is one I'd put for a good dessert. Cheat day or not. Just to even enjoy on any day!!! There is plenty to try out here, and I definitely recommend the Spring collection of Pink Stargonuat a great series that I will miss, once its gone.... Thus... I suggest you try it! At least the Space Dust with the Nebula Berry. My absolute favorite!

Yelp
It's always such a great feeling to step foot inside a Jenis. They always have the best attitude and the best customer service. Jenis Splendid Ice Creams has the most exotic flavors that you won't find anywhere else. And they literally don't mind if you want to try all the flavors. They definitely have the patience here for that. I of course didn't try all of them, but I sure felt like I did. I tried a lot of good flavors, it was a little overwhelming, but I ultimately decided to go with a scoop of their Sweet Cream Biscuits & Peach Jam. It was really delicious and something different. My wife got a scoop of their Brown Butter Almond Brittle. It was also pretty good. You honestly can't go wrong with anything they offer here. Will definitely be returning.

Yelp
Exceptional experience at Jeni's, the best part of my day. The two employees there were very welcoming and helpful. Shoutout to Liza for telling me more about Jeni's and recommending flavors, and to Allison for helping me finally choose and getting me my ice cream. The milkiest chocolate really hit the spot and the buttercream birthday cake was the perfect not-to-sweet complement. My favorite part was the waffle cone though. Phew. A very relaxing place in general. Very high quality ingredients, with a fresh taste Shoutout Liza and Allison again for their service. Highly recommend this plAce. Have a good day whoever is reading this, that is a command.

Yelp
This is for all the Olivia Rodrigo fans- witness the PURPLE waffle cone! I had the brown butter almond brittle and the sweet potato marshmallow brûlée. How could you possibly go wrong!
google avatar

Yelp
Jeni's is great, the ice cream is definitely higher quality ingredients, interesting and well executed flavors, and a good variety of flavors. Downside is that it definitely is one of the most expensive ice creams out there - better off buying a pint vs just a scoop....$6 for a scoop is insane. My favorite flavor is the blackout chocolate cake and the gooey butter cake. Love the variety of flavors that they combine in so many of the options. In the summer especially they do sell out a lot so it can be a bit frustrating - I've actually walked out when things were sold out. Or just buy the pint which is way more cost effective.

Yelp
We always love jeni's! Got the texas sheet cake which had a lovely rich chocolate flavor and bits of chocolate cake!! The rainbow was a nice refreshing tart citrusy flavor while also being creamy! Lastly, brambleberry crisp is always our go to as it is the best flavor for a fruity sweet to creamy taste! Jeni's never disappoints :)

Yelp
What a fun way to explore not only ice cream but the entire ice cream field! I have never seen so many choices of coe creams and so highly rated! Wow. Give them a try- salted caramel. Cognac with gingerbread. White chocolate peppermint. Mexican hot chocolate. Go for it. Try one. Try them all.

Yelp
Visited this Jeni's location during my first visit to Chicago recently and they were amazing as always. We got the brambleberry crisp and cold brew with coconut cream (pictured). This was my first time trying both of these flavors and they were both great - only criticism was that the cold brew with coconut cream was a little 'icier' and less 'creamy' than I expected. However, the flavors were perfect. The inside space was cozy and familiar like other Jeni's locations I have visited and I can definitely see us coming back again next time we're in the area!

Yelp
The new location is OPEN! After a long day of looking at spreadsheets, some ice cream was well-deserved and very appreciated. This was my first ever Jeni's experience, but I have long heard the buzz. I invited a friend who lives nearby to meet me, and we both got ourselves half and half scoops. She got the coffee and coconut, which she said was delicious. I got the banana brulee and blackout chocolate cake, which were amazing. The blackout chocolate cake is super indulgent and rich, so I'm glad I paired it with something a little lighter like the banana brulee. I would definitely get both again. Service was fast and pleasant, and there was no wait because some people foolishly think ice cream is a summer treat. Ice cream is an all-the-time time treat!

Yelp
Best ice cream shop I've ever been to. They let me try so many flavors and were so friendly. I had such a hard time, deciding because everything was so good and absolutely unique! Nothing like I had ever had before. The waffle cone was also totally delicious. I love the spot.

Yelp
It's a snow storm, but what a great excuse to get some ice cream! We walked up and they were actually sanitizing the door handles and cleaning which was great to see. My two friends had never had Jeni's and I was excited to introduce them. My only sadness was we didn't have the chance to sit and savor as the dining area was not open right now. After ordering a few choices for immediate consumption, we also grabbed 4 pints for later. I'm very excited about the lemon bar and in general the huge variety of non dairy options. As usual, extra creamy and delicious with real ingredients instead of artificial tasting flavors. Extra yum! Staff is super friendly and we will definitely be back. Grateful to have so many locations in Chicago!

Yelp
From my observation & previous experiences here, the server who serves the customer has always taken payment especially if no one is at the register... However my family & I were singled out and harassed by this obnoxious server pictured at the 2512 N Milwaukee Ave location... who had the audacity to repeatedly question only us - if we paid while they were already seated & well into our desserts which left a bad taste in my mouth to otherwise tasty ice cream at a local shop often frequented. #Harassment #PoorPeopleSkills

Yelp
Jeni's was amazing! We stopped by during a work trip. I loved the Ted Lasso theme additions. I tried the Ted Lasso themed biscuits one and it was to die for!
google avatar

STACY M.

Yelp
Delicious fun flavors. We were allowed to try a couple choices before we made up our minds. Brambleberry crumble was so good and the browned butter was off the charts! I love Jeni's
google avatar

Yelp
New Chicago location, same amazing ice cream! Even during COVID times Jeni's knocks it out of the park! Several delicious selections are available for scooping. The building looks brand new and was very clean. You stand behind plexiglass to place your order and everything is contactless. The staff was super friendly and knowledgeable about the flavors. Even in the dead of winter, Jeni's is always a good decision!!

Yelp
Stopped by for some ice cream during a winter snow storm (or maybe just winter snow, but I was soaked through by the time I got home. Still, worth it. The new location is nice...it's right next door to the new Target and across the street from Bixi Beer. They post a menu including the seasonal flavors on the window so you can see it and make up your mind before you go inside. There are signs about socially distancing and safety protocols so everyone can stay safe. The inside is nice and clean and will be great for when they can open up the indoors again. The staff is super nice (obviously there are no samples right now). Service is quick. If you get a cone (and you should always because the waffle cones are fantastically amazing (per usual) and made in-shop. Even though they give it to you in a cone, for safety and such reasons reason, they'll serve it to you on a plate and give you a spoon. Flavors (this time): Goat Cheese with Red Cherries - good per usual, not as strong in flavoring as other times I've had it, but still really good Salted Peanut Butter with Chocolate Flecks - one of my favorite flavors of all time (I can't not get this). It always delivers and it's always on point (as is the bramble berry crisp) TLDR: if you nearby, check them out. They're super nice and the ice cream is always good.

Yelp
I like jenis ! My favorite is the chocolate icecream. Always a huge line but luckily the Valentine's weekend we dined at a restaurant not far the icecream parlor so the kids got a few flavors.

Yelp
Very good customer service & awesome ice cream options ... this is now my go to ice cream shop .

Yelp
Okay, so I decided to choose the "warmest" day this week to venture out to the new location. This Jeni's is big, and I can definitely see it getting super busy in the summer and post covid. The taste is the same cause duh, it's Jeni's. The employee was super nice and precautions are definitely in place to make it a safe environment for both guests & staff.
google avatar

Chris T.

Yelp
The staff here was amazing, super friendly and welcoming. The ice cream was even better, sampled lots of delicious and unique options, and did the 3 scoop option. Definitely recommend this spot.

Yelp
MY FAVORITE ICE CREAM IN THE ENTIRE WORLD. If you haven't given Jeni's a try yet... you must! You won't regret it! From the creaminess of their ice cream... to the uniqueness of their flavors... Jeni's is the place to be! My favorite flavors? Wildberry Lavender and Brambleberry Crisp. Yummy! Another aspect about this ice cream joint that I love... it's always so happy when you walk inside! So many bright and cheerful colors! Whenever I'm close by a Jeni's... I have to stop!
google avatar

Cin-Yee S.

Yelp
Order the seasonal wedding cake flavor - blackberry, lemon, and buttercream cake in a vanilla ice cream. Utterly fantastic!
google avatar

Eugenio P.

Yelp
Trying to hang on to the last bit of summer left! Jeni's is a perfect after-dinner dessert or afternoon snack if you're out and about. The smell of freshly made waffle cones and bowls as you walk by entices you like no other. Not only can you expect a scrumptious waffle, but also a variety of delicious flavors that cater to all tastes. Our personal favorites are the brambleberry crisp and butterscotch popcorn, both of which were creamy and delicious. Drop in and get some ice cream to close out the summer!
google avatar

LeShonne S.

Yelp
My Family Loves a Ice cream. Jeni's is one of our go to spots in the neighborhood. They offer a variety of flavors and have something for everyone to enjoy. Every winter my job sends Jeni's ice cream pints to staff, making it great not only for families but for corporate engagement too!

Diana D.

Yelp
Two words: brambleberry crisp. Thank me or hate me later! The store experience was excellent too. I was offered samples and other flavors are clearly marked.

J M.

Yelp
Don't go to this one, We had a 3 scoop and 2 of the flavors were gritty like the ice cream had been thawed then re-frozen. We should have realized it when they started to scoop one flavor and then had to switch to another container because the first was soupy. Also, avoid the skinny guy with the beard, his scoops were about 1/2 the size as everybody else serving there and what you get at the other locations.
google avatar

Miriam W.

Yelp
The ice cream is just as wonderful at this, Jeni's newest Chicago location, as elsewhere. The flavor combinations are thoughtful and creative, and the non dairy options are truly delicious. I don't feel deprived at all when I order the coconut milk base dessert. On the contrary; I often opt for it over the regular ice cream. Service right now is limited to take out, but I can see myself coming here on a hot summer evening and enjoying the lovely setting.

Anne R.

Yelp
Delicious selection. Courteous staff. Very clean restaurant. Loved the limited time Wedding Cake flavor, plus Milkiest Chocolate is scrumptious. Such an assortment of "just different enough to be intriguing " flavors alongside those popular ones. Easy access off Milwaukee Avenue. Ample seating indoors - bench makes it easy to accommodate different sized parties. Again, staff was as sweet as the ice cream !
google avatar

Kesha B.

Yelp
Great ice cream, super friendly atmosphere and wonderful decor that manages to be both modern and nostalgic. Loved it!
google avatar

Kim K.

Yelp
Jeni's ice cream still has the amazing capabilities of taking flavors that you may be hesitant towards, and reversing all your expectations. The new location in Logan Square is cute and quaint and well set up for COVID times with their carryout podium at the front of the store. We each ordered one scoop of the dairy free Texas sheet cake and one scoop of the cinnamon roll specialty ice cream they had. Their dairy free option is DELICIOUS. Usually you run into the problem of dairy free options being too heavily icy, or just flavorless overall. This seems to be made with coconut milk and was rich and smooth. We also got a pint of goat cheese cherry to go and it tasted like a smooth froyo. Also as a fun note, we drove 30 minutes home after getting this and the ice cream didn't even begin to melt which is amazing. Again don't be afraid of some of the more unconventional flavors and go check this location out!
google avatar

Berthena M.

Yelp
Amazing customer service, very friendly staff. The ice cream so so amazing. I can't wait to go back for that gooey cake one :)

Erica M.

Yelp
Ice cream is always either too mushy and old or too frozen. The size of their scoops are not consistent, I wish I took a picture of my bowl compared to my bfs. Disappointed.
google avatar

Holly W.

Yelp
What ever you do - do NOT order Jeni's online. The prices they charge are a joke! $12 a pint? Are you F$%#@ kidding me? I can go to my local grocery store and get it for $6.99 a pint! Think about it folks. If I can buy it for almost half the price - and you know they're making some kind of profit - imagine how much the actual "store' is making?! Bottom lone, Jeni's is ripping of the average consumer. Please pass this along in an effort to get their greed down so that we can all consume a product we love. "Scoop for fun, not greed."
google avatar

Kyla T.

Yelp
As always, great ice cream! I like the new location. It also felt safe in terms of covid as there as only one customer allowed at a time (though it was quite cold outside). Great service and quality product! Definitely recommend checking it out

Cathrine D.

Yelp
I got the peanut butter ice cream and it wasn't very smooth. I liked the unique flavors they had, but the peanut butter felt a little chunky/not mixed enough in the ice cream. The taste was really good, but the texture didn't do it for me.
