Best Restaurants and Shops for Pierogi in Detroit and Southeast Michigan | Eater Detroit

"Established in 1986 in Detroit’s Warrendale neighborhood by the namesake Jennie, who lived about a mile away, this family-run business has since expanded to meet the pierogi appetites of metro Detroit. With about 20 different traditional flavors ranging from savory potato to sweet fruit fillings, the pierogi here are made with the same care and precision that Jennie put into the dumplings, now carried on by daughters Mary and Terry." - Dorothy Hernandez

The best Pierogies (or as the Ukrainians call them, Pyrohy) in the state are from Jennie's. Exactly how you make them at home, but without all the mess. They even have the Plum ones for dessert. Fry them in butter in a cast iron skillet for the best results. Top with minced bacon & drippings, sour cream or apple sauce (or honestly ,all three). The soup here is also homemade and authentic. Highly Recommend!

Stopped in today, best customer service ever. Can't wait to dig into all my treats! Loved that they had soups and meals to go, super convenient food for the soul ❤️🥰 Definitely stop in for a visit, it worth the drive too!!

OMG . These pierogies were excellent. They were just like grandmas. I had the jalapeno and cheese, the potato and cheese and the meatball. Much better than the ones that are in the supermarket. Awesome thank you

Kept passing by on my way home from Costco and the bright red Pierogies written on the wall lured me in! I haven’t tried the bacon and cheese ones yet but the jalapeño and cheese were quite tasty. I am no pierogi expert, but having lived in metro Detroit for 40 years and having visited Hamtramack a few times I feel like I can taste a quality dumpling. These were quite good, right up there with Pietrzyk’s or Bozek’s. I don’t think they were overly flavorful but still extremely tasty. Boiled for 4 minutes and sautéed in butter and oil. A quick and easy dinner, and cheap, a serving size should be three(yes I ate 6). I would be interested in a poblano pepper variety if they take flavor suggestions!

Honestly after reading the reviews I thought they would taste better. It’s not that they’re nasty they’re just bland. I got the bacon and cheese pierogies there’s at most two very small pieces of bacon in each. Can’t say I’d recommend sadly. I sauté them in butter but if I did something wrong please let me know.

When visiting friends we try to patron local businesses. They have a good selection of porogies; however, most were out of stock. All available were frozen with nothing fresh available, this was kind of disappointing. The pierogies were decent. Would suggest using larger pieces of bacon is the Potatoes, Bacon and Cheese.

Google
First time having them today they were excellent. I'm so glad I found this place so I can go buy some with out the mess alot like mine at home. Sourkraut and potato is our favorite (without) onions

Google
Very good pierogis! Had the bacon potato pierogi. Fried in a bit of butter at home with some salt and pepper. Best I've had!

Yelp
Wait a minute, hold on now. You mean there might other places to buy home made pierogies? Ok, I'm confused now. Only one question, why would there be anywhere else to get pierogies? Whole community knows Jennies Pierogies is tops. At Jennies it's price, quality, selection. You get what you pay for: quality. Sure, sure you can make 'em at home. Mom probably did. News flash, you're not mom. Chances are mom's 'old school." Dont know, or unfamilar with that term? Well than, that's part of the problem. Not to fear, make it over to Jennies, take mom a few Pierogies, she'll know and taste the beauty of well made and served pierogie. Get a variety, mom will certainly appareciate and enjoy. Additionally, you'll not go broke. And most definitely you'll be back to Jennies for more pierogies. And why wouldn't you, they'e mouth watering piereogies. Momma won't be mad, sad or had, shes knows quality when tasted, again tha's an 'old school thing' Maybe some day mom will teach you, or eventually, you yourself will be 'old school' than you'll know. In the mean time, see Jennie for your pierogies, you be glad ya did, bet'cha. Regards, Brother Love

Yelp
I have lived near here for years and I have always drove by Jennies Pierogies but I haven't ever been inside until yesterday! My partner and I tried to make home made perogies. We followed a basic recipe we found online... Up until that point I had only ever had One kind of perogie..just the kind from the freezer isle.. good by me.. our recipe turned out great in his eyes.. also his mother said that they are some of the best ever! Well upon driving by again and seeing the open sign I just had to turn around and go into this place! Finally!!! Im usually in a rush while I am in this area and don't have much extra time.. also I am not in the area much these days & on occasion its out of normal business hours. The perogies here come in half dozen or full dozen. I just got a half dozen potato and onion. They were good! It seems like the filling needed more onion or salt maybe but they were good! Probably going to be buying these more often when I can.. Id much rather support local and not buy pre packaged junk food.. Id imagine these are alot healthier!

Yelp
Pierogis were no better than the frozen turds at the grocery store. Expensive as hell for no good reason. Food is prepackaged and require cooking but prices are restaurant prices. Owner is rude as hell and seemed annoyed I walked in.

Yelp
Pierogi and stuffed cabbage so good that my husband now swears he is Polish! Ok, nothing is going to be as good as what grandma made when you were growing up but this is the closest! (I swear my grandma had a secret ingredient - probably alcohol - that was in her food). The stuffed cabbage come frozen and I thawed in the oven with a can of stewed tomatoes. We nearly licked the pan clean!

Yelp
The most delicious authentic Polish pierogi! I am Polish and grew up eating home made pierogi. Jennies are the best!

Yelp
A week ago we stopped at jennies pierogies in garden city ,mi. We bought a dozen cheese/potato pierogies ,6 sweet potato pierogies and 1/2 doz. stuffed cabbage . The dough on both kinds of pierogies was bland and tastless, something was missing ,I'm pretty sure. The filling in both was almost nonexistent . A big big difference from years ago . The clincher was the cabbage rolls ,they were so so in taste ,still over priced. After we thawed the cabbage rolls ,I poured off the excess liquid, there was almost a cup of liquid ,not sauce by any means ,a slightly tomatoey looking water. It is a total let down ,when you have your taste buds ready for something and It's not there. Not a good day for us. I will not hesitate to drive to Hamtramck , next time I want real authentic Pierogies and stuffed Cabbage. It will be worth the time and money spent.

Yelp
Have always wanted to check out Jennie's after living in this area the majority of my life. Finally stopped in on a Tuesday and grabbed some kraut and mushroom Pierogies and some kielbasa and kraut in a precooked meal. Hands down an authentic old world experience when it comes to the food. The Pierogies were perfect and the precooked meal was easy to heat and prep and was equally as delicious. Definitely making Jennie's a regular stop in my routine.

Yelp
I tried this place a long time ago and didn't care for it. Since I haven't made pierogi on my own in awhile, I decided yesterday to try these. Ugh. I was so excited to see farmers cheese on the menu and was displeased to find chive in what should be a sweet mixture. Didn't care for the kraut either so didn't bother with the potato cheese. I'll make mention that Ray liked all three but he can do his own review. The menu is a fairly large size of soups, combos and pierogi. Prices are fair also. No need for me to go back though, I prefer Shellys Pierogis.

Yelp
Very good pierogi! I would not have found them here except for my local friend. I figure if she liked them I was safe as her gran is Polish and I have tasted her gran's delicious homemade pierogi. It is a friendly mom and pop type shop. The pierogi run between $6.50- $8 bucks per dozen. They have an excellent selection but I must admit it is all about the farmer's cheese or the kraut for me. My husband is a fan of the potato, cheese and bacon. For something different you can get cherry which can stem my vareniki cravings in a pinch. They also sell stuffed cabbage, soups and various other items but I have not delved into them yet. Easily turned into a tasty dinner. Great for the non chef, like myself.

Yelp
Jennies Pierogies was just pointed out to me the other day as I was driving down Middlebelt so I made a point to stop in the next day. I wasn't sure what to expect when I inside. So here is the skinny: Nothing is served hot. The pierogies are served refrigerated and ready for frying at home. (Once you do fry them up they are delicious by the way) They also sell pre-cooked frozen meals to-go. I snatched one of those up as well and it made for a awesome lunch at work.

Yelp
I cannot believe I thought, since this was an established business, that the pierogi would be delicious.  There is a small amount of tasteless filling (potato and cheese?? I didn't taste any cheese!) inside a large amount of outer pasta. I bought these frozen from a pop-up of MIchigan products being sold....and they were so expensive!  I have made pierogi and mine are wonderful (so much work for those that taste good) but these were seasonless, tasteless mush.  I don't think there was a drop of salt and I should have read the ingredients list: pasteurized CHEESE PRODUCT!! really??? fake cheese? (mixed with some real cheese).

Yelp
I forgot that I had read this place only had takeout products. I only remembered seeing the sign on the front advertizing the items they sold, including dinners, and it sounded good so it was on my list of places to check out. When I finally stopped by I realized as soon as I walked in that it was not a sit-down place. I decided to order a couple of items anyway to take back to my motel room for times when I didn't feel like going out. I got the kielbasa dinner which I was able to warm in the microwave and it was pretty good tho not a lot of food on the plate. I also got some dill pickle soup which is a little tricky to transport and store since it came in a ziplock bag instead of a soup container with a lid. For that reason I probably won't be back even though I like their food fine. If you live in the area and could take the food home and cook it on the stove I'm sure it would be much better.

Yelp
We recently tried Jennies Pierogis for the first time! We ordered pasties, cheese and potato pierogis and stuffed cabbage! Everything was very fresh and so delicious. I will definitely be back soon!!

Yelp
I was introduced to a Jennies by a close friend. I later learned that here mom used to work at Jennies when my friend was a little girl. I totally know why they are loyal fans! I had both cheese and sauerkraut pierogies. Can you say D-E-L-ICIOUS! They are all handmade and fabulous. They are a decent deal, approx. $6.50 for a dozen :) I know that Hamtramck is not that far for most to go to get good pierogies, but I am still a staggering fan of Jennies. They also have 2 locations. The second is in Warren for all the Eastsiders :) I would gladly eat Jennies pierogies any day and recommend it to everyone all the time. Yummmalicious.

Yelp
Jennies has three locations in Warren, Garden City, and Southgate. I've only been to the Jennies in Garden City and was very impressed by how good the selection was and the taste and quality of the food. Of my top picks for pierogies at Jennies, I would pick the potato and onion and the ricotta cheese. I buy the frozen pierogies- for me there is not a difference between frozen or unfrozen. The prices are fair and like I said, the food's great. Sometimes the hours can be a bit wonky. I know they are closed every Sunday, some days they close earlier than others as well.

Yelp
Stopped in to get lunch and was disappointed to find there are no cooked products to take away. All afternoon I thought about stuffed cabbage and pierogi. Before they closed we rushed over bought several dozen and a couple of containers of stuffed cabbage for dinner. FANTASTIC!!!!!! Everyone pierogi, including the fruit ones were delicious. Stuffed cabbage WAS just like my Mom's! A great place.

Yelp
A big fan for their Pierogies kids thought they were home made. Never had anything that good. Price was great value. Great for Holidays when time is short. Will definitely be going back.

Yelp
I love this place we always pick up a bunch of different half dozen and fat kid them up by frying them and we get the stuffed cabbage also it's very good and not too pricey!

Bob K.

Yelp
Very good food. Always enjoy the perogies and the sausage. I am not a pork chop fan but I really like the way they make them. The variety and selection is excellent.

Cheryl A.

Yelp
Well here I go again posting something negative... Sorry Jennies Pierogies, I am sorry to say that your pierogies are not worth the money. They are very small...looks like they use a melon ball scoop to fill the dough.....well my pierogie dinner just turned into pierogie appetizers... and there is no taste to them ... so load up on the sour cream........

Yelp
Excellent, authentic home made perogies! Whenever I visit I stop in so I can bring them back to DC with me!

Yelp
Only reason I went here is because my wife and brother in law are Polish born and she really wanted some Polish food bad after seeing the sign. I used to go to a Polish restaurant called SAWA in Southland Mall (FYI- Sawa is now Polish Deli in Fairlane Town Center/same owner/moved because the husband, Zygmunt, passed away) for many years (every day for for about 8 years) and I loved It and said alright, since it looks pretty authentic, lets stop by. I ordered a dozen of the potato and cheese and a dozen of the farmers cheese, for one they were about 3 bucks more than the other place for a dozen as well as the were just bland with minimal flavor, like eating a wet noodle in my opinion. Disappointed, not really, I kind off expected it in the back of my mind to not be the same as Sawa/Polish Deli or anything in Hamtramck or Troy/Rochester, but this was way off. It was to my surprise that my wife and her brother thought so too, she told me you can tell it tastes like 4th generation Polish food, not really authentic. I'm personally giving them 2 stars because they're trying to keep the Polish food in the neighborhood (which is amazing) but no stars as far as flavor or the food itself.

Melissa H.

Yelp
Love Jennie's. My family thinks I'm the luckiest girl in the world to have a pierogi store in the neighborhood. Maybe I am. Great selection and fair price, especially for those of us that know what physically goes in to making perfect pierogi. Top marks for super friendly service and for keeping up your stock around the holidays too!

Melissa S.

Yelp
I have always known this place was here but it wasn't until i discovered they sold pasties that i decided to give it a try. It was a mistake everything was just plain GROSS! I ordered two beef pasties to my dismay were cold and completely cooked with the crust being over cooked. These pasties were huge the size of a half of a pie and the price was good at $6.25 it actually fed 2 of us. The crust was not a traditional pastie crust but a thicker pie crust. The meat to veggie ratio was great, the flavor and season was spot on. However the beef was extremely poor quality when we kept having to spit out hard pieces and that just grosses me out more than anything. If the beef quality was better and I could cook these at home they would be excellent. Now the pierogies i ordered half dozen farmers cheese and half dozen potato, bacon and cheese and spent over $8.00 which was pretty expensive. Now mind you these come uncooked and you bring home to cook yourself. First the farmers cheese was just a clump of a curdled blob! The potato, cheese and bacon only tasted like potato and it was gritty. The crust was so thick it was impossible to get down. Now i fry my pierogies in olive oil and butter and sprinkle with garlic salt and pepper and even with excess seasoning these were so blah! The lady who waited on me was great but that's as good as it gets i would not return.
