At long last... I have gotten off my butt and gone to the newest location of the best BBQ in town.
Jessie Rae's BBQ is a local institution which I have eaten and loved ever since the early days in the pub on Maryland by Cactus, which was technically also Henderson. Several visits to their Valley View restaurant, which has a lot less parking and currently is a fire damage casualty, allowed me to appreciate pretty much all of their proteins, sides, and of course sauces.
Today was their one-year anniversary for this outpost, which they took over from the former Tucky's BBQ. It's near the corner of Boulder Highway and Lake Mead, so look for the Omelet House or McDonald's and steer yourself a little south. For the occasion, the owners offered a 50% off discount after 2pm. Now you know why I finally couldn't resist.
They were sadly out of ribs by the time I arrived in the evening, so I'll just have to come back in the future for my favorite of their proteins. Instead, I ordered a pair of three meat, one side combos (usually $23.50) with one chopped brisket each (+$1.99) as well as some pulled pork, chicken, and hot links. Since they had an exclusion on fried items for the deal, I went with Vegas slaw and BBQ baked beans for my respective sides. Then I took them to-go, but not before pouring myself several short containers full of their stable of sauces (pro tip: dine-in means you can just use squeeze bottles of every sauce at your convenience).
The meats are all tender and not dry on their own without the sauces, and they even have enough flavor on their own aside from perhaps the pulled pork. The fatty brisket is smoky and rich, the chicken does have sauce as well as a great spice blend, and the hot links are juicy and do have a kick. The pulled pork is perhaps the least flavorful on its own, but aside from falling apart from the smoking, that makes it the perfect canvas for painting with their sauces.
The sauces start and could possibly end with my favorite BBQ sauce ever, the God Sauce. It's sweet, tangy, and works with everything. The Fallen Angel is similar but spicier, the Carolina Vinegar Style Sauce is a less viscous and more acidic dressing that works well with pork, and the Slammin' Bamma (sic) is their take on Alabama white sauce which I'll also eat with any protein. Finally, the newer Divine Dip is described as "the only fry sauce you'll ever need" but tastes fine to me with meat. It's also creamy but looks a lot redder than typical fry sauce, and I think it has more character.
I know the various fried sides are consistently delicious when I do order them, but I'll keep this section to the sides which I did order. The Vegas slaw is creamy but not vinegar, and it's a really refreshing respite if you're using Fallen Angel. The BBQ baked beans has meat and actually just eats fine on its own. It's pretty sweet though, so it balances well with the smoke of the fatty brisket.
Jessie Rae's is the same; it's just that the list of other local BBQ places that aren't as completely satisfying has grown. Come to Jessie Rae's if you eat meat and don't have a problem with saucing your meat. After having less-than experiences all over town, I'll have to stop taking Jessie Rae's in my own backyard for granted.
