"Jewel, a mostly plant-based restaurant on the border of Silver Lake and Virgil Village, is closing permanently on June 30. Opened in 2018 by Sharky McGee and her ex-wife Jasmine Shimoda, the restaurant has been a beloved neighborhood staple for six and a half years. The closure follows numerous unforeseen challenges, including staffing shortages, rising costs, and the impact of the pandemic. Jewel became a refuge for regulars, especially those seeking community. McGee reflects on the changes in the neighborhood and her decision to close the restaurant, while also considering her next steps." - Rebecca Roland

"What It Is: A new plant-based cafe in Silver Lake Perfect For: Lunch, Vegetarians Jewel is a plant-based cafe in Silver Lake with an interesting menu ranging from kelp pad thai to something called charcoal pizza. But our recent visit to this all-day spot resulted in a meal that wasn’t very interesting - the yuba sheet wraps and that charcoal pizza were pretty bland. That said, the bright space is nice and casual, so if you’re a vegetarian or vegan or you just want some avocado toast, you’ll be happy enough here for a quick lunch. Verdict: We won’t be rushing back, but it’s a decent lunch option for vegetarians and vegans." - jess basser sanders, brant cox, brett keating

"Jewel is a charming gem along a busy stretch of Hoover Street, boasting creative all-day vegan fare — from carrot lox toast to spicy “tuna” tostadas made with marinated watermelon — and a robust collection of natural wines. The restaurant’s sunny patio is a burst of happiness with a rainbow mural, woven patio chairs, and potted plants, perfect for long chats with friends while idling the day away." - Eater Staff
