Woooooooo! Jianbing! I practically lived off these things last time I was in China, so I was super excited to give these guys a try.
$13 seems a little steep for what is found in major Chinese cities for less than $1, but OK, it's NYC blah blah blah.
Jianbing: thin, crepe-type wrap filled with your choice of meat (or tofu in my case) as well as a deep fried crisp cracker, scallions, cilantro, and chili paste (various heat levels available). It's good, tasty, light, but it's lacking in any heft approaching, say, a burrito, which might be a deal-breaker for some at a $13 price point. It also isn't quite as portable as it looks, as it is lightly packed and easily falls apart if not carefully held.
Sides: had 3/4, and 2/3 were terrible, with only the edamame dumplings holding up. The green beans tasted like they'd been marinated overnight, and not in a good way. Maybe it's just me, but green beans are best with some crisp and complementary seasoning, not soggy and pungent. The eggplant was equally unappealing, mostly due to indiscriminate use of ginger. The Chinese do love the ginger, but these levels were absurd, rendering the eggplant a slimy ginger mush pile.
Yeah, I would order their jianbing again if I had the hankering, and I really want to try the jidanbing (folded flatbread type version of jianbing), but they always seem to be out of it. Fine place, clean, and conveniently fulfills a niche interest without having to schlep down to Chinatown.
