Boston’s Best Chinese Restaurants | Eater Boston

"The newly opened modern Chinese restaurant leans heavily on Jiangnan cuisine, where flavors can vary from sweet and tangy to a umami-forward freshness. It takes over space that was once Teatro on the edge of the Theater District but the Romanesque interior remains the same, making it a dressy Chinese food choice if you have a show to catch nearby. Be sure to order the Beijing-style roasted duck and have it prepared “two ways”; one the classic version, which involves sliced skin and meat folded in freshly steamed pancakes, and one with the bones and leftover bits made into a tofu and cabbage soup or crispy salt-and-pepper snacks." - Nathan Tavares

Google
A very impressive Chinese restaurant chain. There were so many dishes I wanted to try, but several of the dim sum dishes were already sold out, and we didn't have enough people to order everything. Our favorites were the Peking duck, green beans, mapo tofu, and lamb skewer. Service was friendly, but they did forget something we had ordered. Prices were reasonable. Reservations highly recommended. Is come back.

Google
I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. I met my friend there to catch up after not seeing each other for years, right away I realized the service was going to be amazing. Our server, Steven, was so welcoming and he took great care of us. He was attentive but gave us space to talk, he was chill about us taking our time with the menu and was just all around an awesome vibe. We had the roast duck, deep fried tofu, and smoked pork neck. I saw a negative review about the roast duck, whatever the issue was they fixed it. From the delicate wrapper to the light crispy skin, it’s the best I’ve had outside of China. TLDR great food, amazing service. Will be back with friends!

Google
Quite expensive but I like the freshness of the ingredients and good taste of the food! Service are nice but no parking space. You have to wait until all of your party to sit. Generally a good experience!

Located just across from Boston Common, JiangNan Boston offers a cozy yet modern atmosphere that blends traditional Chinese design with contemporary style. The menu features an inventive take on Chinese fusion cuisine, balancing familiar flavors with creative twists. We tried the Peking Duck, which was perfectly roasted—crispy on the outside, tender and juicy inside—and paired with classic accompaniments. Service was exceptional from start to finish, with attentive staff who provided thoughtful recommendations. For dessert, the crème brûlée stood out as a delicious East-meets-West fusion, with a smooth, subtly flavored custard and a crisp caramelized top. JiangNan Boston is a refined dining experience well worth the visit.

Google
This is a Chinese restaurant with good professional services and has a nicely decorated main hall. The menu has many of the traditional dates from China. The Beijing duck offering is well plated with the option of half or full duck. The lamb skewers have a nice flaming surprise which brings out the awesome flavors of the meat. Overall, a good experience.

Google
Very good upscale Chinese. We ordered the whole Peking Duck, roasted eggplant in chili garlic sauce, truffle and mushroom fried rice (we ordered a 2nd fried rice it was so good) and sweet and sour spare ribs. All very good and good size portions for sharing with a group

We have dined at Jian Nan several times over the past year. It’s one of the more high-end Chinese restaurants in the Boston area. While the prices are steep — easily around $200 for two people after tip — the environment is elegant, and it’s hard to find a comparable alternative nearby. We have always enjoyed their Sichuan-style hot spicy fish and their Beijing duck. The flavor of the Beijing duck was good, but the slices were generally too thick. This time, after we had almost finished, we realized that the bottom layer was just a large chunk of duck meat, not sliced at all. We shared our concern with the waiter, who mentioned that this issue has come up multiple times. Unfortunately, he said the restaurant management is aware but has chosen not to hire a skilled Chinese chef in order to maximize profits. That is unacceptable for brand name like Jiang Nan. He apologized but said there was nothing more he could do. Given this experience, this might be our last visit to Jian Nan. For the returning visitors, I hope you will not repeat my experience again. If I were to rate our earlier experiences, I would have given Jian Nan a solid 4 out of 5. However, after this recent disappointing visit and the management’s unwillingness to address customer concerns, I would now rate it a 2.

Google
Overall I think a pretty good experience, staffs were very friendly and attentive, making the dinner more enjoyable. The lamb skewer was very tender and juicy. Would recommend for anyone looking for high-end Chinese cuisine in the area :)

Yelp
Delicious and spicy Chinese food! The inside is huge and fancy. We got the Peking duck which was succulent and delicious. The Chili Chicken Stir-Fry was the table's favorite because of its tenderness and spiciness. The Chili Wontons were also delicious while the Jumbo Prawns with Saltef Egg Yolk were decadent and well-fried. I'd go back!

Yelp
When you want a dressier Chinese place, JiangNan is my recommendation. The place has an upper scale food presentation and service that makes it a nice dining experience. We tried the Peking Duck, Steamed Pork Soup Dumplings, Sautéed Eggplant, Crispy Shrimp w. Walnuts, Braised Beef Flank, Baby Cabbage, Mango Pomelo Sago dessert, and the Peach Gummies dessert. All great hits, especially the Peking Duck. Reservations are hard to get so plan ahead!

Yelp
TLDR; We had an excellent meal at this location and would highly recommend! This is an Asian fusion restaurant that has several different Chinese cuisines available here! Items we ordered (as of 10/2024 - Peking Duck (half order) - $46 - Absolutely delicious! Because this is the first item on their menu, one would expect it to shine and it does! I've seen videos where they carve it at your table but for us they brought it out to us already carved and ready to go (which was fine for us). They have ample crepes available to wrap on your own and the quantity is great for 2-3 people. The nice thing is that there's no need to make reservations ahead of time if you want some Peking duck! - Sautéed Tofu with Crab Meat - $23.95 - An excellent dish with ample amounts of crab meat. The gravy sauce and the tender tofu pairs really well together. I would get this again. - Steam Pork Soup Dumplings - $8.95 - Very clean broth and I really enjoy the meat filling as it's very tender and savory! You get 4 dumplings per order. Very good and would recommend. - Stir Fried Beef with Chili Peppers - $26.95 - This one was a bit disappointing. While it had a nice spice to it, the quantity we got was pretty subpar with what you're charged. I'd give this a pass in the future. Overall we enjoyed our experience and will be back to try their other dishes!

Yelp
Jiang Nan offers a refined dining experience with dark lighting and a fancy vibe--think white tablecloth service. The staff was very attentive with refilling water, changing plates, and bringing extra bowls as new dishes arrived. They start with a small salad with chili oil dressing that was very good. Wish they gave more, though I probably could've asked! The pineapple beer was a highlight--absolutely amazing! It's labeled as serving size for two, but we were able to share it among four people. The jellyfish in vinegar was good, though the portion was small. It's even better with chili oil which you can ask for. The pork and crab soup dumplings were fantastic. Soup dumplings are a must-try. The pan-fried pork buns were soft with flavorful pork inside. The sautéed eggplant was incredibly soft and delicious, one of the best versions of the dish I've had. The seafood fried rice was average. It had a decent amount of seafood, but nothing stood out. On the other hand, the deep-fried bullfrog was super crispy and crunchy and VERY SPICY! The whole Peking duck was delicious, with perfectly crispy skin. I loved making each bite, and I highly recommend adding the soup made from the duck carcass for an extra $15--it's worth it. I personally would not recommend the dessert here. I got the sweet jelly and mixed fruit in yogurt and there is better dessert in Chinatown. Overall, this is one of the best Chinese food I've had in a finer dining setting. I'd definitely recommend it, especially for those looking for an experience. I was able to get seated at lunchtime without a reservation, but needed one for a weekend dinner.

Yelp
Growing up in China, I'm used to restaurants being holes in the walls - no frills, simple, just there to give you food. So, I was really curious to see how JiangNan intends to transform that experience to one of class and sophistication, given its NYC location's reputation of being a Michelin Star restaurant. Stepping into the restaurant, you can already tell it's not like any other Chinese restaurant you can find in the nearby Chinatown; the interior was well decorated and dimly lit, very much suggestive that it's suppose to be more "fancy." Servers were very attentive, too! Now onto the food, what you've all been waiting for. The crispy fried eels were hot and fresh. Thin and crispy with that delicate fishy flavor you expect from eel. The green beans were surprisingly delicious! Smokey and stir-fried to perfection; not at all waxy, actually had a satisfying snap and crunch to it. The minced meat added lots of great savory notes! That pork belly was phenomenal! I'm talking layers upon layers of rich, delicate fat intertwined with tender meat, coated in a thick, sweet black tea sauce. Some pieces were wonderfully tender; others were not as much, unfortunately. Each piece is sort of like a coin flip. But hey! It looks so beautiful! The smoked pork neck meat: eh. It was cool how it was presented in a drawer, and that they used a blow torch to smoke it in front of you. But it just tasted like your typical smoked ham on a Christmas Day. Plus, for $30, you are not getting a lot! Definitely a lot of better and more filling options. Finally, the rice cakes were wonderfully chewy, like mochi! The brown sugar sauce paired nicely with it. Overall, is this a good Chinese restaurant? Yeah! But honestly, the flavors of the food didn't really surpass that you can find at any traditional Chinese restaurant, so you're really coming here for the experience. But was it a good experience? Yes, yes it was. For that, I give it 4 stars.

Yelp
Excellent! We came here after a Wednesday matinee at Emerson. Very few customers there (around 5:00 pm), but the place got pretty busy about 45 minutes later. Throughout, the service was great. Food arrived timely and water glasses were kept filled throughout. The food was fabulous. We started with the Hot and Sour Soup with Seafood. It was $12.95, which seemed like a lot of money, but it did serve two portions and was delicious. Also had the Chicken and Mushroom Soup Dumplings - four substantial dumplings that, again, were really tasty. For entrees, we had the Eggplant with Garlic Sauce, and Crispy Shrimp with Honey Walnuts. Both were delicious. I would say that the Eggplant might have been the best I ever had.

Yelp
Perfect spot for celebrating a special occasion! I went here with my family on a weekday night and highly recommend making a reservation in advance. The portions here are slightly smaller compared to the restaurants in Chinatown so we ended up ordering a lot of dishes. The highlights were the pineapple beer, eggplant, pork belly in tea sauce, lemongrass fish, and of course the duck which we got with duck bone soup. They used to set the duck on fire and carve it table side and I was disappointed that they don't do this anymore. The duck is good but without the experience of having it carved table side it's hard to justify the $90 price tag for it. I think everything else here is still delicious though and would recommend going here to eat their other dishes and skip the duck. All in all the bill came out to be ~$60 a person which isn't too bad.

Yelp
Excellent food and service! Peking duck tastes very authentic. Pork belly can be cooked a little longer. Cumin lamb was literally on fire! All the other dishes we ordered are good too. Overall had a great meal here!

Yelp
We came here for Peking Duck and surely it didn't disappoint! We had no reservation because they won't do reservation unless it's more than 4 people. We waited 50 mins and it was worth the wait. We ordered a whole duck with an add-on salted pepper duck bones. Additional, we got truffle fried tofu and crab & row on rice. Presentation was great and the best surprise was my drink. It was sooo good!! Yuzu Blossom (order it!). We will definitely come back to try more dishes for sure.

Yelp
The place is pretty dark when you first walk in, but you're greeted by all the servers and staff. We ordered stir-fried string beans, half a peking duck, pineapple beer, spicy wontons, and soup dumplings. This was way too much food for 2 people. The pineapple beer was so good. A little bit on the sweeter side. The spicy wontons and soup dumplings were both really good but it did not justify the price. The Peking duck was okay. This one wasn't that crispy. The string beans were good and a little bit spicy. It's located right next to Boylston station. I wouldn't come here regularly due to it's high price points but would come back for special occasions.

Yelp
I came here to celebrate belated Father's Day and Mom's birthday. No, wait for Tuesday at 7 pm. This is my 2nd time coming; the food still tastes good except for the lack of air conditioning inside during the extreme heat weather. Peking duck is a must and add-on soup. I ordered the deep-fried striped bass with sweet and sour sauce this time. It is delicious and goes well with the rice, but they added too much vinegar to the sauce. Shrimp with dragon tea was refreshing, but I wish they had used bigger shrimp instead of fried rice shrimp. The sauteed crab meat was so delicious that we needed to order an extra rice. The braised pork belly with black tea was not too oily, and it melted in your mouth. The service was fantastic. This place is pricy for the portion, but it is worth it. It is not a regular Chinese restaurant, and each dish was nicely presented.

Yelp
Came here for Mother's Day lunch and made a reservation over the phone a few weeks in advance. I do wish they had online reservations, as it was fairly hard to reach them on the phone. We were running late due to traffic and road closures, so I really appreciate them being accommodating and still honoring our reservation despite our tardiness! We got a half order of the Peking duck, the smoked pork, cabbage in chicken broth, crab XLB, garlic eggplant with minced meat and pork belly bamboo soup. All of it was good, though some in my party said the Peking duck was sweeter than they preferred. We also got complimentary dessert which was the peach gummies with tremella (Mother's Day special I believe). The dessert and peach tea we got were both barely sweet, perfect for your Asian parents and a-yis who think everything is overly sweet! The one miss that I do remember is that we were seated in the very back of the restaurant, which was fine, except for the fact that the waiters and bus staff all hung around there when not tending to a table so it did feel a bit awkward having staff looming over us for periods of time throughout our meal.

Yelp
This restaurant has been on my bucket list for a long time and we just got to try it yesterday. 1. Food: 8.5/10 We ordered Stir-fried string beans with minced meat, Braised pork belly in tea sauce, Peking duck (half) and Sliced ox tongue. We enjoyed all the dishes we ordered. Peking duck was delicious, but we didn't think it was super unique or anything. We really enjoyed the pork belly and the string beans. We had mixed feelings for the ox tongue. While it was good with great spice, the meat still has a strong smell for me. 2. Ambience & Service: 8/10 The place is small but we got seated at a big table so we felt super spacious. Cute and simple decor. Our water kept getting refilled without us needing to ask. We had to flag down the server to get our bill though, but overall they were efficient. 3. Location & Price: 7.5/10 This is centrally located in Chinatown, which is in the downtown area of Boston. Not a whole lot of parking so if you come with a car, that would be tricky. The location is also close to Boston Commons, so you can certainly walk around after eating as well. Pricing is fair for Boston, but obviously on the higher side for Chinese food. We didn't think it was unreasonable though. Overall: 8.5/10 We will come back to try more dishes!!

Yelp
Upscale Chinese restaurant with lovely decor (think: tall ceilings, tan leather booths, small flower or candle centerpieces on every table, and mirrored walls) and attentive service. Located in a prime spot next to Boston Common, but on the pricier side for Chinese food (average $20-30 per dish), especially given the smaller portion sizes. All of the dishes are done well, but nothing has blown me away. The peking duck is worth getting for the experience, though they used to light the full duck on fire and carve the meat table-side and don't seem to be doing that anymore. The sautéed crab is also a cool presentation, served with large crab shells containing the crab sauce, which the server mixes into rice for you. The end result is a soft and yummy flavored rice, though it doesn't seem to contain much crab meat. Overall, flavors and portion sizes are not worth the price for me, but you're also paying for location, ambiance, service, and presentation. I would come back again if suggested by other people.

Yelp
We love Jiangnan, usually for a nicer meal, though we've also ordered takeout. They don't take reservations except for larger parties so show up expecting a wait at prime time everyday. They'll take your phone number and text you when the table's ready so you're free to go elsewhere. We've almost always been texted much earlier than estimated. Food is really good though they seemed to change the recipe for the Peking duck last time we went and I liked it less. Our favorites are the Peking duck, steamed soup dumplings, winter melon ribs soup, sliced beef in golden pepper broth (spicy), sautéed shrimp with dragon well tea and crispy shrimp with honey walnuts. We weren't fans of the lotus root with sticky rice though we had high hopes because we like the ingredients. We also like mapo tofu but not at Jiangnan as much as elsewhere (like Noah's Kitchen in Brookline).

Yelp
Fine dining Chinese food! I loved their Peking duck - the wrap was thin and duck was tender yet crispy.

Ellen H.

Yelp
If you are looking for authentic Chinese food, from my experience, this is not the place. 糖醋里脊sweet and sour pork, and 西红柿红酒炖牛肉tomato wine sauce beef stew are what I got. The portions is small, compare to the price, it gets ridiculous. 糖醋里脊is dry and not authentic, taste like some Panda Express food, beef stew came without much soup left, only couple of potatoes and is dry with no flavor, which means it's been sitting there for a long time and not been put into the soup long enough to cook in the flavor. Beef itself can taste good, it's tender, but it's not fresh or handled right, it has an odor. The flavor is not well balanced either. Overall is very disappointing.

Michael C.

Yelp
We came here on a Sunday. Food was okay but either too salty or too sweet. Pancakes for the Peking duck looked like something from an Asian grocery. Hostess was rude and otherwise service was below expectation for an "upscale" restaurant. The toilets - oh the toilets - looked like they had not been cleaned for six months, with globs of disgusting damp dust at corners, wall bases, behind the commode. That alone disqualifies this as a "fine dining" experience.
google avatar

Yelp
Gosh. This joins Sumiao and Szechuan Mountain House in the ranks of high priced but super high quality Chinese food. Went here on Chinese New Year (they don't take online reservations) and was the 5th party in line 15 minutes before they opened. The food did not disappoint. We ordered two ducks and a bunch of other random stuff. Very good overall, and service was exceptional. My water glass was never empty. Cannot wait to come back. The duck is a must-order. Our ducks were not super large, but they were pretty fatty + good lean meat too. Gimmicky to be setting stuff on fire tableside (duck, lamb) but everything tasted great.

Yelp
I've always wanted to try this restaurant, with its neo-Chinese decor and service but it was the Peking Duck that whetted my appetite. I knew the restaurant that was in this location previously and I was curious to see how the owners would transform the space. The restaurant is long and narrow and upon entering, with its well lit ambiance and red curtain flair, it was like walking into theater, with Chinese food being the center of attention. The tables were adorned well, with customer amenities like packaged towel and gloves. There definitely was a refined welcome. We started off with black tea and it was fragrant. For starters, wontons in chili oil, lamb skewers were orders. The former being the better of the two though the table side torching of the lamb skewer was a nice experience - be sure to have your camera out! The half Peking Duck with salt and pepper bones was ordered along with Mapo Tofu and Sweet & Sour Pork Tenderloin. It was only after ordering did I realize that only the whole duck is served table side but the presentation of the half duck on a tray was nice. The duck was succulent and crafting the duck roll with hoisin sauce, cucumber and scallion was fun. The pineapple was new and I wasn't sure if that was meant for the duck roll or as a palate cleanser. Also note, each rice wrap was separated with paper, a nice touch. The salt and peppered duck bones were fun but not necessary. The other dishes were tasty but it's really about the elevated experience, which is what Jiang Nan is striving for. The dessert, the Gluten Rice Cake in Brown Sugar was fun but afterward, I was more curious about the Mango Pamelo with Sago, as it was the waitress' other favorite dessert. I'm all for an elevated Chinese cuisine experience as Chinese food and service has not always been taken seriously so I'm glad this restaurant is trying to do just that. Though I would need to try this restaurant again, I envision that the restaurant staff will conceive new ways to take familiar dishes and elevate it to new expectations. Kudos to the waitstaff for providing excellent, friendly and swift service.

Yelp
Yum!!! Came here for dinner with my boyfriend and his parents when they were visiting from out of town. I typically don't like duck, but their duck baos tasted so good! I was surprised, this is the only place where their duck was cooked in a way that was delicious. Their other dishes where great as well. This place is good for dates or a small group, nice restaurant as well. We definitely will come back in the future! The service was relatively quick as well.

Yelp
I got JiangNan for takeout and was beyond pleased with the quality of the food and the flavors. I saw the positive reviews and the menu and knew it would be good, but it exceeded my already high expectations. I got the bacon fried rice, diced pepper chicken, string beans, and sweet and sour pork. I genuinely couldn't tell which food was my favorite since they were all equally great. The diced chicken with peppers was a good level of spicy but incredibly flavor and not too many peppers (and better than the mountain house pepper chicken in my opinion). The string beans had pork in them and were the best string beans I have ever had. The bacon fried rice also had bits of Chinese sausage and the texture of the rice was not mushy at all and had a great fire roasted flavor that fried rice should have. Sweet and sour pork was the most basic item I got but it too was great quality meat and good flavors. I would highly recommend JiangNan for takeout considering how good the food is, and I am sure it is even better in person. I cannot wait to try it in person sometime.

Yelp
I went while in vacation the place is beautiful. However we did have a difficult time with the chopsticks. It was the first time using them so we order forks eventually. I will just say it was a struggle at the beginning but worth it. We order a whole duck and braised pork belly with beans. Let me just say my husband does not eat vegetables but he absolutely loved that beans in the pork belly. The duck was amazing. But there is one dish which has my heart on a hold. Which I was told was the house cabbage. Which you can see in the picture. If you are the owner. I would love to order the cabbage if I could. That's how much I loved it. If possible i would order weekly. I lives 8+ hours away. And there is none near me. But that cabbage was been on my memory since I left. The service was so far the best we received in Boston and the food too.

Yelp
I enjoyed my experience in this place. The food was extremely good and somewhat fancy. The service was decent and made us feel comfortable. A nice ambiance to have a special dinner or lunch. The duck was our favorite item ordered, will go again just for that plate. Our only regret was ordering half of the duck.

Yelp
Presentation for this place was very fun for a birthday party! You just go WOW for every dish. It does get very busy in here and the space gets tight. Definitely make a reservation for sure! The Peking duck was a must and great for $88. It's good for 4-6 people depending on what other food you're ordering. Had a good amount of meat and wraps. You can add a duck soup for additional $15. They take the bones they just cut up from the duck to make a soup, so the soup does come later in the meal. It's a great palette cleanser. Must get - Peking duck, string beans, cumin lamb in sizzling plate, chili wonton, soup dumplings

Yelp
My son wanted to try this place as we were craving Duck. We had a relatively short wait. The place was full at 7:00 p.m. Reservations for four or more people only. We were glad we did not have to wait long, yet enjoyed basking in the delicious aromas, the happy people eating yummy food, and taking in the unique ambiance. Deep floral wall paper with stone archways ... deep red curtains lined in gold. We ordered a variety of dishes yet nothing compared to the duck. It was so tender, juicy, and crispy! Next time that will be the only thing I order yet really? Who can order just one dish?
google avatar

Alex G.

Yelp
First time here, read great reviews and it was close to our hotel. Modern yet simple decor, jazz music playing overhead sets a sophisticated environment. Menu is rife with authentic dishes (bullfrog, pig liver, kidney, etc), but also amazing (more Western) items like Peking duck, soup dumplings, stir fried dishes, pan fried bao, and fried rice. The dining area is roomy; not crowded with tables, which is a big plus. Dishes were all very good to excellent, with a highly recommended half Peking duck. Yum! Soup dumplings were another special treat, and something we should order. Pea shoots as a side dish were the perfect vegetable - healthy, fresh, and just the right crispness. Overall, five stars!

Yelp
Visited this restaurant twice during our stay in Boston. Food was fabulous, service was very good. Had a variety of dishes, all were delicious. We stayed at the Ritz Carlton, this restaurant is 500 feet from the hotel. No reservations, they take your number and text you when table is ready.

Yelp
Second time coming here and tastes better than the first time. Came at 430pm on a Sat and it was pretty packed. They take limited amount of reservations daily but do accept walk ins. So if you can't get reservation at the time you want, don't be discouraged. Can still try to walk in. If there's a wait, you can put down your name on the iPad waitlist. Service here is always very attentive. Very smooth and efficient. They're always looking and checking if anyone needs anything or if they need to make space to put down more dishes. The ambiance is good for small groups with friends or family. High ceilings and can get loud and a little hard to talk. Interior still reminds me a little of prior Teatro but updated and brighter. Appetizers- lamb skewers (I didn't try this but someone at the table that is not a fan of lamb, said it didn't taste gamey and was very flavorful), Xiao long bao, pan fried bao (both were very juicy) Entree - signature - half Peking duck (very tender and juicy), not as good as the old school ones but still pretty decent), Mapo Tofu (just the right amount of spice and flavor), Sweet & Sour Pork Tenderloin (not as sweet as traditional Sweet & Sour pork, not as fatty and not overcooked), boneless chicken (we asked for less spicy and it was perfect because we could taste the flavors as opposed to just spiciness) They have a pretty large menu and portions aren't too big so you'll be able to get more items to try. Will definitely be back to try their other dishes!

Yelp
The food was delicious, and the staff was attentive. Our family went with our two little ones. The space is not very kid-friendly, but they were accommodating. We were lucky to get the large booth area between the bar and the main dining room. We made reservations on a Friday for 5:30 PM, and by 6:30 PM, the place was packed. The presentation for the Peking Duck was phenomenal! It was a fun experience to watch. It was my first time trying this dish. I've heard and seen this dish from other people that has tried it, and it did not disappoint. We enjoyed everything we ordered except found the soup dumplings to be disappointing. We ordered both offerings, and there was barely any soup in the dumplings. The portions are smaller than your typical Chinese restaurant, but the flavors do not disappoint, and it's a beautiful space. Love the ambiance!

Yelp
Jiangnan is definitely not your average Americanized Chinese food. First of all, the place has rich, sumptuous decor. Second, it is expensive. Third , you will find many dishes not on the tropical American Chinese menu: Tripe, tongue, pig liver, and bull frog! I love to try different types of food, but I was not feeling adventurous. Husband and I shared a few dishes. All were fabulous! The chicken lettuce rolls were so flavorful and were the best I have ever had. The soup dumplings were excellent! For our mains we shared Kung Pao Chicken and Stir Fried String Beans. I know, kind of boring choices for a place like this, but they were dishes husband and I could agree on. Service was polite and expedient. As good as the food was, there are so many less expensive places to go in Chinatown, so it might be a while before I return.

Yelp
Upon seeing the signs for this place opening up, I knew I had to stop by at some point. The New York location is impressive in itself and while this spot lacked a bit in aesthetics, the food was pretty tasty and decently priced. Decor wise, this spot just felt like a hotel lobby and bar that they remodeled for a restaurant. The location is much deeper than wide so it felt a little tight on space just due to that. The lighting and ambiance also felt different from the vibe of the food, but that wasn't a huge deal. I would suggest getting a reservation or coming early to place your name on the waitlist as it was quite busy even when we first got there for an early dinner. We were seated once our entire party got there and got a nice corner booth. The menu had a good mix of dishes and we settled on a soup, two shared plates, and a full duck for the table; for four people, this was a good amount of food. The soup was pretty delicious, the tofu and eggplant were tasty, and the duck was really nice. They carve it in front of you, light it on fire, and then serve it with gold as well; very extra. I think it's a bit overpriced, but that's just my opinion. I would honestly have rather gotten it without the gold with an option to keep the bones after they carved it. Service was a bit slow and paced weirdly as the duck came super late. They also were very bad about tending to drinks - I asked for a water refill and they quite literally filled everyone else's water besides mine. Overall, I would say this was a nice meal. Good food, nice quality, albeit priced a bit high. Service also could be improved, but that wouldn't deter me from returning.

Yelp
JuangNan Boston is located directly across from Boston Common and on the same block as the movie theater. Easily accessible by train. I would definitely recommend making a reservation or calling ahead as the place was packed. Parking is very limited, so plan to pay for parking in this area of downtown Boston. We found a parking lot but even once in, we had to have it valet. The most memorable dish, which I highly recommend, is the Peking duck. I recommend ordering the whole duck which comes with table side service. You can order a tofu soup made with the bones for an added cost. The duck carving and presentation was worth getting the whole duck. For all the duck meat we had, we needed an extra order, maybe two even, of the pancake wrap. The soup takes a while to prepare, but was tasty. My husband also ordered an order of flank steak in sauce. Unfortunately it was over cooked, and so chewy we couldn't even enjoy it at all. I should have sent it back to the kitchen or at least let them be aware so they can address the kitchen staff or remedy the problem, but I didn't. We also ordered two types of soup dumplings, the pork and crabmeat and the black truffle soup dumplings. Both were good. I prefer the pork and crab dumpling over the black truffle. The black truffle is worth trying once. The steamed lotus stuffed with sticky rice caught me by surprise. It was very sweet, more like a dessert. Not something I would order again. The whole steam bass with lime and lemongrass was good, surprisingly huge amount of garlic, huge chunks matter of fact. Probably more garlic that lime or lemongrass flavor. Flavors are more subtle than both. I had to try the latte as it was so pretty. It was as good as it looked. But more a dessert drink and didn't go with the food I ordered. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it. I definitely recommend this restaurant. Gorgeous interior, great service, and good food. Definitely a place to bring out of town guests and highly recommend the whole Peking duck here. I'll definitely be back to try some other dishes. See my pictures!

Yelp
This is such a great find! One of the most delectable fine Chinese dining experiences across the country. The food is made of high quality ingredients, made in such a refined way, and served with care and precision. The service is top notch. They are courteous and professional. Not to mention hot waiters. We got the sautéd water spinach, xlb, steamed egg with truffles, and pork meatballs in house special sauce. Every dish was flavorful and refined. You can taste the quality in their ingredients and the special skills that went into the making of each dish. The ambiance gives a classy but laid back feel. It allows you to feel being in a place of beauty, refinement, and comfort.

Yelp
Was ok- for the price not worth it at least for the things i tried (will be back for the Peking duck tho!) braised pork belly was a real let down (kinda tasted like a charsiu sauce) because the meat was not as tender as i expected. Crab and tofu dish generally uses cornstarch as a thickener but there were some corn starch globs that weren't rly mixed well in the dish (flavors were good tho). Soup dumplings had a really strong Chinese wine note that I was not a fan of i would def come back for more food I think the spread we got wasn't the best. Atmosphere def on the more bougie aesthetic, but lots of family and friends dining here casually

Yelp
Jiang Nan has breathed new life into the former Teatro space, creating an upscale Chinese fusion experience that stands out among the city's culinary offerings. Located just outside Chinatown, this gem quickly became one of my favorite restaurants in Boston. **Highlights:** 1. Soup Dumplings - A must-try! The perfect balance of delicate dumpling skin and rich, flavorful broth. 2. Wontons in Chili Sauce - A delightful mix of spice and savory goodness, these wontons are a treat for the taste buds. 3. Sweet and Sour Pork Tenderloin - A classic dish with a modern twist, the pork is tender and juicy, and the sauce strikes the perfect balance of sweet and tangy. 4. Mapo Tofu with Minced Meat - A comforting, spicy dish that warms you from the inside out. The tofu is silky smooth, and the minced meat adds a wonderful depth of flavor. 5. Sautéed Eggplant with Minced Meat - A delicious combination of tender eggplant and savory meat, this dish is a must-order for any eggplant lover. 6. Steamed Lotus Roots Stuffed with Sticky Rice - A unique and beautifully presented sweet dish, perfect for sharing with a group. The gold leaf adds a touch of elegance to this delightful dessert. 7. Peking Duck - A showstopper! The presentation is stunning, and the duck is expertly prepared. A must-try for any special occasion. **Skip:** 1. Sliced Pork Belly with Mashed Garlic Sauce - While the presentation is interesting, the dish falls short in flavor and texture. Served cold, the thin slices of pork belly don't quite hit the mark. 2. Pineapple Beer - Cute presentation, but not worth the price. Made from a combination of Budweiser, pineapple juice, and Sprite, it's a novelty that doesn't live up to its cost. Overall, Jiang Nan offers a delightful dining experience with a lovely interior, attentive staff, and an extensive menu of delicious dishes. The complimentary marinated cabbage and chili oil salad is a tasty start to the meal, and don't be afraid to ask for more. 5 - star experience and will be back many more times.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere - we grabbed the last available table at 6pm on a Monday! The place was bustling! Service was okay - definitely on the minimal side. I enjoyed most of what we ordered but would likely order different items if we came back. The Kung Pao chicken exceeded expectations - saucy, sweet, and spicy. Perfect with rice. I do think it's ridiculous they charge for rice especially given the types of entrees they offer. We also ordered fried tofu with black truffle - skip this. Literally what it says and it's a very mild truffle. I wish this was salt and pepper tofu with truffle salt - that would be bomb! The tofu was pretty bland to me. Finally the Peking duck - great as wraps as the pancakes are so thin and warm, but the actual quality of the duck was a little dry by itself. The leeks/scallions were also quite thick and hard to chew. There were a lot of Chinese diners because a lot of authentic foods are on the menu. I'll come back to try their other dishes. Convenient in the theater district.

Yelp
We came here for dinner before our show and it's pretty impressive! The decorations are nice and clean with a calming vibe. The service was great, very accommodating and attentive. I like my rice wine drink and its presentation. The food was on point with presentation and flavoring. I though is a little disappointed that the Peking duck was not carved at the table like other places that I have been to, the duck skin was not separated and not crispy like the others that I have experienced. However I did like how thin the pancakes were. I would come back again to give other dishes a try

Yelp
Upscale peking duck place in Boston - so good!! Great place to take family, catch up with friends, or a date night! Excellent service and attentive waiters. Peking duck - that's what you come here for. If you're coming here and not ordering the peking duck, you're doing it wrong. You can go to other Chinese places to get everything else, but the peking duck is so good here! They bring the duck to table side and it's a whole show where they carve up the duck and separate skin and meat so that you can easily put it all together into a small wrap. Wraps are also separated by paper which is nice and convenient! In terms of other food, they were good too! Nothing crazy, but beautiful and delicious! The spicy fried chicken cubes were great but I think they actually gave us fish instead of chicken! Haha it was very good though Parking is the one thing that sucks around here, but good thing there is a lot of public transportation nearby!

Yelp
Beijing duck: roasted and deep flavor. The food was really fresh and wrapping with sauce, veggies were great combo. The whole dish was for 3-4 people so worth going with groups of people.

Yelp
Incredible chinese food and I loved the ambiance here. Usually, when a chinese restaurant is more upscale, the flavor goes down, but that wasn't a problem here. They are known for the Peking duck and it did not disappoint. It was so flavorful and the portion size was pretty decent. I would also highly recommend getting the sweet and sour pork!

Yelp
This was the most delicious and thrilling experience I've had in a long time! Of course this place is famous for their peking duck, and it did not let us down. Very beautiful presentation and cutting of the duck for us, and at a really affordable price. It was tasty and rich of flavor, very soft and presented effortlessly beautiful. We also had the spicy wontons and the pork xiao long baos, which were very good as well and I highly recommend it. We went on a weekday afternoon so not busy whatsoever, beautiful dining room and the service is very attentive and professional! Very enjoyable meal with my family- definitely a high recommendation if you're out in Chinatown.

Yelp
We came on a Sunday afternoon looking forward to the Peking duck and it definitely did not disappoint. We ordered a whole duck for 4 adults and 2 kids and there were plenty to go around. Would be nicer if the chef sliced the duck in front of us though but the food was yummy. We also ordered the sweet and sour striped bass and salted egg yolk shrimp. The sweet and sour striped bass was really delicious. The salted egg yolk on the other hand was a bit bland. Surprisingly we ordered their seafood fried rice and it was one of the stars for us. The flavor and texture were perfect and the portion was pretty generous too. Would definitely come back to try other dishes.

Yelp
Four months ago, my family and I had dinner at this Shanghainese place. We ordered the whole peking duck, steamed XLB, chicken and fish maw soup, saueteed water spinach with fermented bean curd, and deep fried striped bass with pine nuts in a sweet and sour sauce. We got disposable chopstick heads, wet wipes and plastic gloves. Nice.. The chicken and fish maw soup came with chunks of dark chicken, fish maw, and goji berries in a yellowish broth. It was pretty good. The XLB was a bit of a disappointment. The XLB was soupy but the skin was a bit thick. The sauteed water spinach was good but the portion was a bit small. The peking duck was definitely the highlight of the meal. They come out and carve the duck in front of you. The duck was crispy and moist. It was served with cucumbers, scallions and hoisin sauce. Yummy! The sweet and sour striped bass was also delicious. Portions are a bit on the small size so you might want to order a few more than usual.

Yelp
We went here on a Monday afternoon. The place looked pretty fancy, even luxurious inside. The menu is diverse and features a lot of elevated Chinese classics, and they have a nice cocktail list for their cordial license. Everything we ordered, was absolutely delicious. The Peking duck especially had so much flavor and I would come back just for it. Perhaps it was because we were some of the first customers for dinner service, but the speed of which everything came out was super quick and surprising. Service was friendly and knowledgeable. Unless it's something that you grew up with, I wouldn't recommend any of the hot jellied or glutenous desserts. They were almost medicinal. The only reason we ordered them is because they didn't have any crème brûlée available and we were feeling adventurous. In general, this is a 'once in a while' kind of place. I think you can get similar quality of food elsewhere for less, part of what you're paying for is the atmosphere. I'd love to come here on Christmas or something.

Yelp
The truffle soup dumplings were the best I ever had! The peking duck was perfection but I should have ordered the whole duck. The shrimp were good but could have used more seasoning but the presentation was spectacular!! The staff and the ambiance were excellent!! Do make reservations well in advance. We got on the waiting list on a Saturday and it took over an hour and a half but worth the wait as I had my heart set on getting the duck.

Yelp
Best Peking duck in Boston! Their duck is so crispy outside and the meat is so tender. They have the usual sides: cucumber, sauce, and green onion but they also give sugar and pineapple. Different, but very delicious. The wrappers are warm and soft, not dry at all. We also ordered their soup dumpling, very tasty. Great place for date night or family dinners! Would come back again.

Yelp
Walked in alone after 9p, they accommodated and never made me feel in a rush. They have a great mix of exotic and classic Chinese dishes. They start you off with this amazing cabbage. I loved it !!! Actually got seconds lol. The soup dumplings and wantons were good but the pork belly and walnut shrimp were exceptional. Finished with the rice cakes in cinnamon and sugar. I will definitely be back !
