"This ramen offering from the folks behind Torihei izakaya feels very much like a neighborhood ramenya in Japan, featuring an excellent tsukemen that's full of fish funk to go along with intense porkiness. The lighter Tokyo-style ramen has a terrific burst of bonito to round out the flavors without an overly rich tonkotsu broth. The digs are starting to feel a little weathered at this point, so don’t expect a luxury dining experience, though that might also be part of the charm." - Matthew Kang
"The house specialty at Jidaiya is chicken-based ramen, which makes sense when you realize this strip mall shop in Gardena is run by the same owners as the excellent yakitori spot, Torihei. The dining room here has a strong Old Tokyo theme to it, with a faux wooden rooftop and dark wood along the bar. Our favorite bowl is easily the Tokyo Yatai, a savory, lighter-style shoyu ramen adorned with a seared piece of chashu, a slice of pink fishcake, and a soft-boiled egg. They’ve also got more unique ramen styles that are worth a try, like garlic tantanmen and soy butter-tossed “monja” noodles.
