The Best New Bars In LA - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"It’s almost impossible to hang out at Jim + James—a quirky and vaguely Southern bar in East Hollywood—for anything short of several hours. Every table comes with a deck of cards and stools at the bar face a tiny TV playing old VHS movies like Indiana Jones and Xanadu. There’s an extensive natural wine and craft beer list, but everybody’s drinking time-tested cocktails like sidecars, daiquiris, and best of all, a briny Gibson garnished with pickled sea beans. Come hungry, too. There’s an excellent snacks menu with down-home things like cornbread, pimento cheese with crackers, and peppery, shaggy-crusted fried chicken that you and your tablemate will be fighting over until the tin bowl is picked clean." - brant cox, sylvio martins, garrett snyder

Google
Everything about this spot was charming and truly delightful! My girlfriend said it was the best martini she’s ever had and the daiquiri was perfect! Putting a deck of cards on every table is such a sweet touch, can’t believe more places haven’t been doing this! The outdoor area is very pleasant and the inside is vibey and intimate. Our favorite dishes were the shrimp skewers, cornbread with honey butter, and chicken fried mushrooms. Truly all hits no misses!! Will be back, ideally with a big group to try the whole menu.. Excited to go back in the winter and lounge at the bar inside, such good vibes.

Google
this is a hidden gem in east hollywood/los feliz that is worth every penny. i’ve forgotten how many times I’ve returned here because all I remember is how incredible the food is & how the atmosphere is so inviting it feels like you’re in someone’s home. the service has always been top notch while remaining casual & warm. i wish i could give the chef & all the staff a big group hug. please check this place out!!

Google
This spot deserves all the love and support! Reviewing for brunch on the patio with a farmer’s bowl and chicken + cheese to share-perfect to swap delicious bites of the two. That said, happy hour and dinner experiences indoors have also been prime and now I know I can’t go wrong indoor or outdoor, for dinner or brunch! This is such a homey and friendly gem, pull up with your people and pull out one of their decks of cards and prepare to enjoy!

Google
Jim and James is such a gem of a bar! I hosted my engagement party there, and Ally was so incredibly helpful throughout the planning process and event itself. My friends and I already loved stopping by Jim and James for a drink and a snack (their fried mushrooms are AMAZING), but after seeing how kind and excited Ally was when it came to helping us make our engagement party a reality, I can safely say Jim and James is one of the best bars on the east side. I would so recommend stopping in for a bite or hosting an event there. Ally really wants to be a part of the community her bar is in, which makes Jim and James all the more special.

Yelp
, Stylish Outdoor Patio, Creative Menu & Craft Cocktails - A Must for Dinner in LA! If you're looking for one of the best dinner spots in Los Angeles, Run don't walk, this is it! The vibe is spot-on: a chic, stylish indoor space with a lively bar and a gorgeous outdoor patio that's perfect for an LA evening. The menu is thoughtful, delicious and creative, with a veggie-forward approach that still offers plenty for meat lovers. As a vegan, I was blown away by how flavorful and inventive the plant-based dishes were--something that's surprisingly hard to find in LA. Everything is beautifully prepared and absolutely delicious. The cocktail program is just as impressive--craft cocktails that are balanced, unique, and pair perfectly with the food. This place nails affordable elegance. Whether it's a date night, a special celebration, or just a relaxed dinner with friends, you'll leave happy and planning your next visit. Highly recommend for anyone looking for amazing food, great cocktails, and outdoor dining in Los Angeles!

Yelp
We were exited to finally make it here and it was well worth the drive. We usually dine outside but the vibe inside was perfect. The music was good and at a proper volume. The visuals from a small tv at the bar added a nice touch. Well for sure try the patio our next visit. All of the staff were super friendly and made us feel warm and welcomed. The food... The chef is amazing!!! We decided to go with some of my childhood favorites: cornbread, rice & beans and fried chicken (mushroom). We loved everything we tried. We ended our meal with an amazing rhubarb pie. If you love good food and atmosphere, you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Great breakfast burritos. Cozy inside. Lots of outdoor space. It's connected with Nidos.

Yelp
Walked in on a whim a few weeks back. Had a drink at the bar and ordered some food to go. Unfortunately, most of the chicken I ordered was raw so I had to knock down some stars. Enjoyed the vibe and staff a lot and look forward to trying this place again.

Yelp
What a charming neighborhood resto/bar. The small bites were great. Recommended the pimento cheese plate (delicious) and fried mushrooms. So so good with all the sauces. The bartenders made excellent drinks. Definitely a cute spot to hit with a patio I think will be perfect for when the weather warms up.

Yelp
Great spot for pre or post dinner drinks. Looks like food options were great too but we had already eaten across the street. Bartender was super-friendly. It was a chill place to grab a drink with a nice outdoor patio. Parking was def a challenge

Yelp
As a Southerner I hold places that call themselves Southern or Southern-influenced to a higher standard. My first visit to Jim and James created high expectations. There were some high notes and not-so-high notes to report. First, the service was excellent. The staff was super nice and attentive. Second, the atmosphere was great and there is a cute outdoor patio. Now for the food: The fried chicken ($16) --the main reason I came--had a great skillet-fried flavor and a light crispy breading. Unfortunately it was much too salty--I had to down a quart of water to dilute the salt. Also would have preferred a drumstick to the two breast (white meat pieces). The pounded thigh was good, but once again, too salty. You might need an extra blood pressure pill after eating this dish. Fried okra with peppers was unique and not bad for an L.A. restaurant although the breading could have used a little work -- it caused the pieces of okra to stick together and didn't fully stick to the okra itself. I really liked their homemade ranch dressing though which paired well with the okra. Cornbread with maple butter was very good -- maple butter was a nice touch. Collard greens were also ok for L.A. but had a spicy kick that doesn't belong in traditional collard greens (at least for me) -- and they also had onions to which a collard green purist would not approve. I was a bit disappointed that they did not have iced tea which is a shocker for a Southern restaurant. Also if you are going to charge $4.00 for a Mexican coke (and bottled sodas are their only soda options), then offer the regular size (17 oz) Mexican coke and not the 8 oz size. Food does need a little work to truly fit the definition of true Southern food, but I hope they can get it right.

Yelp
Very peculiar, limited menu. Very nice ambience, sweet wait staff. Sunday noon, nice crowd, wait staff unable to keep up. Long wait times. Their brunch menu is based on slathering things on big, open biscuits. I did fried chicken pieces on cold pimento cheese dressing. Ick. I think I'd love the sweet menu, biscuits, butter and jam. Just know this place seems to lack management skills.

Yelp
What a cute little gem! Replaced another restaurant that seem to be struggling and apparently the restaurant is currently acting as a pop-up. The food is exceptional so please come here to support it to make sure that it stays. This is an incredible addition to the neighborhood.

Yelp
Best new brunch spot / evening bar in LA. Everything is so fresh & clean tasting. Lots of vegan & gluten free options too. The corn cake is a must! So is any of the seasonal vegetable dishes such as the market salad. They play old VHS tapes at the bar, and the music is always a vibe. Great cocktails at night.

Yelp
New favorite restaurant in LA. Food is fresh, their sauces are killer. I've tried everything on the menu now and don't have any complaints. Drinks are great and wine they've got a new age selection. i personally am on a mezcal white Negroni fix due to this place that no one for some reason can replicate the same elsewhere? I love a vibey place that really gives the love I look for of east side LA, in Bushwick NY and West side Chicago but without the overkill of hipster or too rich to function crowd. I hate to even expose this amazing place as I want to selfishly keep it for me but it deserves to thrive. I also love a spot with great employees that can read the room and not a spot where my server hassles me every few minutes. They've got card games available to play too. I bring my clients here, my friends, my date and my book for a good read. Catch me here daily.

Yelp
So we went here for a friends birthday and idk how else to say this but the waitress hated us. like not in a passive "ugh influencers" way more like an active disdain. Like she was genuinely offended by our presence. i asked for a fork and she looked at me like i kicked her dog. We tried to split the check and she fully sighed like she'd just run a marathon and we asked her to do it again backwards. like sorry?? It was actually unreal. not even trying to be dramatic but i've been to parties where the host forgot i existed and still felt more welcomed. and this is LA -- i've been fake-nice'd to death -- but this wasn't fake or nice. it was just... aggressive. everyone at the table was like "is it just me or..." and then we all realized no. it wasn't just you. this woman was on a mission to ruin the vibe. food? fine. not worth the trauma. vibes? haunted. service? like being scolded every second if you wanna feel like a burden for celebrating your friends being alive, 10/10 would recommend. never coming back lol.

Yelp
Great ambiance and very nice and friendly staff. Food was so good and great portions. Patio is comfy and big. Highly recommend!

Yelp
This place is what dreams are made of. Incredible food and drinks, inviting space, glorious patio, cards (!!), those Cajun fries and that ranch!!! The prices are actually kind of affordable given its central LA location and proximity to other extremely expensive restaurants on the same street. Service is consistently stellar! Go go go!!!

Yelp
I live in the neighborhood and let me tell you that from all the other places that are in the area, this has to be the most welcoming place I've been too. Their food is flawless, their drinks are spot on and the vibe is just overall great. The staff is attentive and beyond nice. If you're in the area please support this gem.

Yelp
This place is so darn special. Really comfortable room and vibe with great music. The cocktails are exceptional, often with a slight creative edge. The food was terrific and reasonably priced. And the service was great. Truly loved it

Yelp
This place is the best!! The fried chicken, caramelized onion dip, and collard greens, are SO good. The cornbread is UNREAL and the sticky bun is literally the best I've ever had and enormous. Everyone is so nice and it has a legit neighborhood hang out vibe that feels very authentic, especially because there's food and alcohol options at a price point that's actually appropriate for east hollywood. If you don't have much to spend, it's the perfect place to meet with a friend and get a lil dip and crackers and a glass of wine (but also perfect for a huge meal!!) I've lived here forever, and it's annoying that every other place that's opened makes it clear that they're only there for the cheap real estate, not to serve any actual residents.

Yelp
Went here for brunch yesterday and it was SO good! I got the fried chicken biscuit which came with pimento cheese gravy situation and pickled vegetables. We also got the potatoes which were crispy and topped with peppers confit. Big patio, friendly waitstaff, and delicious coffee and tea! Just a wonderful vibe and experience. There's no reason they shouldn't be packed on the weekends. Ive also been here at night and the drinks are DELICIOUS. Perfect for a cute date night or meeting up w pals.

Yelp
Good 5-6pm drink and food happy hour and nice outdoor space with heat lamps. Very good service. The chicken wings and pimento cheese with crackers were both very good.

Yelp
Loved the service, drinks and overall vibe! Sat in the patio with my partner and we both ordered the spritz and Bloody Mary! Our server Jamie was so sweet and friendly. she made us feel at home and love the touch of board games and music in the patio!

Yelp
best bar in la... obviously. come early and stay late it's the most fun place you could ever visit

Virginia R.

Yelp
I had high expectations for this bar when they opened and Jim and James has exceeded every one of them. I have been here several times for brunch, dinner, or just for drinks and the service is always excellent, the food delicious, and the drinks well balanced. A great addition to the neighborhood. Come for a drink and a snack while you wait for your table at Saffys or Found Oyster and don't be surprised if you find yourself not wanting to leave.

Adam S.

Yelp
This place is awesome! The vibe, service, and quality of food/drinks are fantastic. Absolutely amazing Cajun fries and I couldn't believe the ranch was homemade. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Jim and James is such a delightful little spot! My husband and I stumbled in on a whim on Valentine's Day right before closing. We felt bad staying when they were about to close up shop but the owners kindly insisted. The menu was incredible - delicious cocktails, fun specials, solid wine program, and the food sounded delish - will def be back to try. We did indulge in a slice of pie that was absolutely bananas (pun intended, banana pie). We had great chat with both the owners and loved the vibes. Can't wait to come back day or night - been searching for a good patio with great cocktails and great hospitality and this is it!
