Jim Dandy’s Fried Chicken - Review - South Los Angeles - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Jim Dandy’s is a tiny counter-service spot on Vermont Avenue where the only thing standing between you and transcendent fried poultry bliss is a thick layer of bulletproof glass. We like to think that this bold security measure is the only way Jim Dandy’s kitchen staff can protect its sacred piles of golden-brown fried chicken– you won’t find a better version anywhere else in LA. Be sure to order your chicken “spicy” with a side of corn fritters—each one of these deep-fried dough balls tastes like a bite-sized funnel cake covered in just enough powdered sugar to keep you awake for the drive back home. It’s shockingly good comfort food that you should keep in mind the next time you’re feeling sad or just craving grease." - Nikko Duren

It just doesn't get any better than this! I'm a fried chicken lover from way back. I grew up in the South and have had my share, to say the least. I live in Orange County, but was doing some work in LA and thought I could find some good fried chicken in the area. I was looking for a little hole in the wall place and Voila, just off the freeway, there it stood. With a line out the door and the smell of fresh hot chicken in the air, I knew I had found my new chicken spot. This is fried chicken the way it should be done. Hot, fresh, juicy, and absolutely delicious! The pieces are large too, unlike some other places. The sides are great as well. The stand out favorite is the spicy rice. OMG it's good. I don't know how they've been able to keep their prices so low in today's economy, but they have. I can feed my whole extended family without breaking the bank. As it said, I live far, but about every month or so I make the 45 minute drive to get me some chicken. Of course, it doesn't all make it home. If you've ever eaten here, I'm preaching to the choir. If you haven't, stop what you're doing and go... right now. Why are you still reading this? GO!

Google
I liked the spicy chicken way better than the original. The original wasn't that good to me. As for the fritters, I'm not a sweet tooth eater, so I didn't really care for them too much. Next time I will probably just get the dinner roll. The dirty rice was delicious. The drink is not really anything special to me.

Google
I ordered a chicken breast and a wing. That breast was very flavorful and juicy. The chicken was crispy and filled with a lot of white meat. The wing was good too. It came with some fitters and fries. The fritters was good. I definitely would recommend the restaurant to friends and family. For the price of this meal, you get a lot of band for your buck. Come on an empty stomach. You will leave satisfied.

Google
Well Jim dandy’s is actually a staple for losangeles this is the last one left if I’m not mistaken u guys the food was good the chicken was okay but I really go there for the chicken and rice which is a side and ask for the fritters with extra powered sugar I guarantee u will wanna get more they sell them but I believe 3 so I always drive 60 miles to get 12 lol. But there really good and the price is super reasonable I believe u can get a 3 pc for under 12$ don’t quote me but there is no place to sit so if u have any problem standing bring someone with u. Its not a eat in. Restaurant it’s a get it and go there’s a lot of parking it’s sits right on the corner of Vermont and imperial and ur food is cooked fresh check them out let them know Carla sent u!!!

Google
A good place to grab some fried chicken. Place is an establishment here. Been coming here for years. I get the fried chicken for sure with potato salad. But don't stop there, finish your meal with a banana pudding or peach cobbler. The only thing is that you can't sit and eat, you can eat in your car or take out. But stop by and try it out.

Vanessa

Google
Best fried chicken spot if you’re craving some good licking chicken! LOL Everything on the menu is good. The only negative is there no seating to eat there, everything is to go. Best to go to the nearest park and enjoy your meal. Cheerio!! :)

Google
Got my order wrong! Double check y'all orders! I double checked my order verbally with the girl and She repeated it got home was missing 4/8 pieces of my order! **They ended up giving me the 4 piece had to drive back though. I love their Chicken and Prices **

Google
This spot is in the hood of south central LA... the chicken is bomb af. It's crispy, juicy, & delicious, even on the second day. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND. It's to go only. They take all forms of payment, even Tap & Apple Pay, which is a win. They have an ATM, too, but it looks like it has AIDS tho, so use that at your own risk.🤣 I suggest the spicy chicken, mini sweet potato pie & onion rings.

Yelp
Even tho I was born and raised in LA, even tho I have lived all over the US, and now I'm back in southern CA, I have never tried this place. I have to say some of the best chicken I have ever had in my life. I will be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Iykyk! If you're from LA then you already know! Jim's is a staple in the community. They're famous for their corn fritters but make no mistake the spicy chicken is what most of us love. My bestie loves the fried clams. The service is good and fast but you can't eat inside. It's a pretty small place and it can get crowded. It's reasonably priced and food is always hot, if you're looking for fried chicken I'd give Jim's a try!

Yelp
It was ok; used to be better. I was hungry & on my way to work w/no lunch. The staff aren't courteous at all. They must not know chocolate-la-ta-tas were fryn' chicken waaaay b 4 the could smash beans im just sayn'
google avatar

Yelp
This fried chicken is simply the best, it doesn't get better than this, the value for the amount of food that you get is almost impossible to find these days . The service is fast and friendly, the place is a throwback to old school fried chicken places . I definitely recommend this place .
google avatar

Mercedes A.

Yelp
Classic, perfectly seasoned fried chicken with pretty good sides! The prices are super affordable and thus is my go to spot for Friday night dinner! Parking is super simple. The area is kinda sketch but the people don't bother you if you don't bother them.

Yelp
I've always had this booked! So glad I came here after LAX! The customers were the best! So helpful in what to get! There was a long line, but moved quickly! I got (2) 2 piece chicken w fritters and sides, fried clams, and banana pudding. I had to take pictures in my car because they have no seating. The fritters are the best! I didn't expect them to have powdered sugar on them, but was a nice contrast to the savory chicken. The clams were plump! Only missing the tartar sauce. Do they even have tartar sauce? That's what they need if they don't. I like adding hot sauce with tartar for seafoods. Banana pudding was delicious. Everything is so cheap. I got everything for about $23! I was going to get the fish, but a customer said that it was like fried fish sticks. Oh well. That's ok, the chicken did the trick! Chicken and clams are my go to!

Yelp
Wow, I've been hearing about Jim Dandy's chicken for years and I decided to give it a shot and I must say I wasn't disappointed. I had the 3pc meal 1 breast and 2 wings and it was absolutely delicious, the customer service was great and fast. Just note this is not a din-in chicken spot, the chicken is made to go. I definitely recommend Jim Dandy's chicken.

Yelp
I was working in the area and was at a stoplight and saw this place and thought, "What in the Grand Theft Auto?" something in my spirit said I needed to stop for lunch here because it looked like something out of a movie. I left turned into the lot and parked on the side of the building. There was a small line that went out the door but moved fast. I asked the person in front of me what their usual order is and they said they get a 2 or 3 piece meal with rice and fries and had been coming here since they were 8 years old. I got the two piece meal with rice and fritters and I also added banana pudding. I ate this on the hood of my truck since there's no indoor or outdoor seating and everything slapped! I don't even like fried chicken but this fried chicken was cooked right down to the bone and it was so tender, juicy and flavorful! The rice was tasty and had a little jalapeno kick. The banana pudding, I wish I could just run down the street and get it now. It's so good. Next time, I'm getting two bags of fritters because it tastes like Samoan pancakes with powdered sugar on top and it's SO GOOD! I used to say when I get back from international trips the first thing I want to eat is In-N-Out, but now I'm coming straight here.

Yelp
Everything at Jim Dandy was fine. The service was pretty quick and easy at the walk up, the food was hot and fresh, and everything tasted okay. Maybe I was let down by the hype I saw on social media about this place. It's a small place with a walk up window, so nothing to note about the interior of the restaurant. The chicken portions were good and flavorful, but it was dry. Even the thighs, which are the juiciest part of the bird, were pretty dry! Adding some hot sauce helped, but shouldn't be needed. The corn fritters were delicious! The shrimp had a weird flavor and my wife didn't finish them. The pricing is fair and if I'm in the area I'd probably try them again. But definitely not at the top of my list.

Yelp
This place was soooo good. Upon arriving there was a line. I ordered the chicken with a side of rice, fries and corn fritters. The chicken had GREAT FLAVOR and it was crunchy!!! But baby the corn fritters were equally good. They are served with powdered sugar on top. It was sooooo good. As far as the ambiance don't expect nothing fancy. You order will be taken behind bullet proof glass in a small older establishment (these are usually the best places).

Yelp
Love this place so much. Grew up in this neighborhood and this was an all time fav place. Their spicy chicken and rice has never let me down. Recently came back to visit and had to grab a bite. Juicy, flavorful and crispy chicken. Rice hit the same as it did back then.
google avatar

Steve P.

Yelp
For a small spot, the chicken was good. It's a "to go" only place. Which is fine. Had a flavor for fried chicken and saw some IG talk about this being the best. So I tried it and it was good. The fries were basic and bland. The sweet fritters were tasty - like little donut holes. And the banana pudding was delicious. The service was super nice and welcoming. Especially when I said it was my first time. Ambiance, well it is a "to go" location. Nothing screams at you for beautiful ambiance. It's an in and out spot. But overall, the chicken was good.

Yelp
today I decided to go to Jim Dandy's. I am terribly disappointed. The chicken seemed old and greasy. It had no taste to it. This is no longer the Jim dandy fried chicken that I am used to eating It was horrible. I'm so sad. I will never go there again. Today's date is 1/172024.... There was a ton of chicken and lots of customers. I don't understand why I was giving such old chicken. It was like it was sitting there all day just horrible simply horrible.
google avatar

Lou C.

Yelp
Hood chicken at it's BREAST aka best aka 2 breast are better than 1 lol. Don't worry about the ambiance because that's not what this place is known for, just good fried chicken. Also it's a grab and go spot, so no seating. Workers are always nice and attentive. I Always get the spicy cause that's how I like mine anywhere I get chicken. The tater tots are apart of there secret menu jk, but it's not on the menu, so is it a secret menu idk. Also, as soon as you get them to the car, make sure you let them breath or else they will be soggy taters.
google avatar

Mark S.

Yelp
The best chicken I've ever tried. Well worth the 45min drive. Service is always friendly, fast and easy to deal with. Always gotta stop by when I'm in town
google avatar

Yelp
Fresh food, moist juicy, delicious, that good customer service despite what the building looks like. I wish I had gotten more.

Yelp
The freaking best !!! 5star Fritters bomb too! In the hood so beware lol

Yelp
Summary: Jim Dandy; Your staff is Dandy, but can't say the same about the chicken. The tl;dr; meaning (too long, do read) 5/5 staff experience. I want to say this was my first time walking into the place was pleasant, everyone was nice and friendly and answered all my questions about the food and whats in it. 3/5 Yes the ambiance, was peaceful don't let the bulletproof glass scare you away as it comes with the territory if you are a food spot in the city. however the ordering and line direction is confusing 1/5 Food. Jim Dandy I really was dumbfounded on the chicken and not in a good way. When I looked up "best fried chicken" this was on the list I read, and so my expectations were pretty high. The chicken, tasted like old oil. Yes reusing oil for Fried chicken is not unheard of and its quite common. HOWEVER, there comes a point where even reused oil needs to be replaced with fresh oil. I don't understand how a place that has been open for so long, has a cook or staff that doesn't know when to change out the oil. I bought 27 pieces of chicken which skin tasted like it was cooked on 3 day old oil thats been left out. Trust me the best chicken places even the average ones like KFC go through new batches of oil because it seriously ruins the food if its too old. What do you think the onion rings tasted like? haha the same oil.... and onion rings are supposed to be an oily treat not when it tasted like it's rotten. It was terrible i couldn't even eat one ring the moment i started chewing it gagged. The saving grace which was the 1 out of the 5 was the fritters. The corn fritters were actually great and maybe they use a different oil for that. Either way it was the best thing in the menu; the fritters. I wont bother talking about the other mac salad or potato salad they were decent nothing to rave or cry about but somewhat forgettable. The Banana pudding was bland. My people I understand cutting corners but don't cut corners when it comes to food. Cause you going to get found out real quick.
google avatar

Tanisha W.

Yelp
For what most people would consider a hole in the wall, I love this place. You are ordering behind bullet I believe and yes, you can barely see the menu and yes, the place is not the most appealing to look at. However, the most important part is the food and the chicken is delicious. Always comes out hot and the service stellar!
google avatar

Nicole G.

Yelp
I love this chicken place. I've been coming here since I was a little girl and they never cease to disappoint me. Come at a good time because if you don't, there will be a line outside of the restaurant other than that their food is spectacular and they always give you extra, which I really appreciate

Yelp
As LA food institutions go Jim Dandy is one of those that is in a class reserved for few! Decided to do take out last night but also in prep for Christmas Eve dinner tonight. We picked up ala carte 10 piece regular chicken and 2 dozen corn fritters (no sugar). The chicken was mainly for dinner and lunch. The fritters (most of it anyway) would be coming with us to Christmas Eve dinner. As always the chicken was crispy and unctious. The fritters were great, with a hint of spice, always a treat. Order and pickup at the window was fast and efficient the staff friendly and helpful. This being the only one left, there is always a line to place an order and to pickup, but hey it's a small price to pay to enjoy the chicken and fritters. We don't go regularly but it's always a nice treat when we get some! For first timers, Jim Dandy is takeout only, no tables. You order through bank style bullet proof windows. Don't be deterred. The chicken and fritters are chef's kiss.
google avatar

Katy C.

Yelp
Absolutely the BEST fried chicken in SoCal! Lucky it is far away from us, otherwise, we would be eating it on the weekly basis and probably gaining at least 20 lbs/yr because that is how delicious it is! The extra crunch chicken is super crispy on the outside but extremely juicy on the inside. Not too salty like most of the fried chicken places, just with the perfect seasoning. The spicy chicken is full of flavors... not as crispy but just enough crunchiness. Service is prompt. They do have the bulletproof glass here. Considering the surrounding neighborhood, I think it is better to leave once you get your chicken! This place is so yummy! If you haven't tried it yet, do it!

Yelp
Disappointed. I wanted to go somewhere else but my husband bought me here. Ordered 4pc with a side of corn and fritters Guess what, corn is missing Other than that chicken is bland and taste like old oil or seafood oil. Giving the 2 star for the fritters. Good thing the fritters doesnt taste like the oil or maybe the sugar cover up the oil taste. Very dissatisfied maybe because i was hoping to eat good friedchicken only to get a bland oil tasting chicken. Not worth the hype. Whatevers hyping this place.
google avatar

Saw S.

Yelp
Went into to order a platter for a babyshower. Got the 18 piece tray in less than 15mins. The chicken was crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. I will have to be back to try the rest !

MM D.

Yelp
The chicken and side are always good anytime I visit. Keep up the great work all these years. The corn on the cob is definitely a plus. Thank you

Skyler L.

Yelp
best fried chicken come here and eat it. You gotta try the rice and spicy chicken, its not spicy but very flavorful. Dont go to some fancy ass restaurant, go here cause hood food is where its at. Got the food quickly. behind that bullet proof cashier window is some amazing f*ckin food. my advice advice is skip the rolls and get some damn fritters.

Tabitha B.

Yelp
The food is good. I just live too far so by the time I get home, the fritters are cold and not as good.
google avatar

WR J.

Yelp
Recently came back to the neighborhood and bring nostalgic, stopped through. My husband wanted chicken so bad, he was almost willing to risk it all, because of the stars. I do not know what that taste is on that chicken, but it's just nasty. Tastes like the cooking the food in motor oil. It's a chemical taste and smell and gross.
google avatar

Me H.

Yelp
Not the safest area. But, it's so popular you know food is fresh. Perfectly crisp and friendly staff too. Not expensive at all. Will go again.
google avatar

Luiz C.

Yelp
Jim dandy has delicious chicken. I'm not sure what it is about this place but I definitely recommend it if you are in the area.
google avatar

Brian V.

Yelp
I don't usually go out this way so I checked my bookmarked locations on Yelp, when i was in the area to get my vaccination. This place popped up. I can't remember why I bookmarked it but it was right there. Maybe it was on a list for the best fried chicken in LA or something. The place is on a corner of a major intersection so it's not hard to find. Plenty of parking as well. The place is small so right now they only allow a certain amount of people in... at least that is how it was the last time I went. The prices are super reasonable for fried chicken. Heck, the prices are even better than some of the fast food chains. I ordered a three piece meal and since I'm a sucker for banana related stuff, I ordered the banana pudding. Also because it's not easy to find banana pudding at a lot of places. The chicken was real tasty and I had a really great crisp to it. The fritters were solid. If I went again, I would probably pass on the pudding. It's not bad but I can do without it and it was just way too much food by that point. The positive side of that is that yes, for the money, you get a good amount of food here for what you pay. If I were in the area, sure I would definitely go back. Maybe when I get need to get a booster shot ha ha. Or maybe as a small detour if I'm on my way down to OC or something.

Sue G.

Yelp
Best ever spicy chicken and extremely fast service It's not fancy place Lots of regular folks come over vh and this should be a landmark Los Angeles times should write a article and picture
google avatar

Shannon B.

Yelp
Chicken had been made. Was not fresh. Although price was reasonable.. Food was under heat lamp long enough to dry-out chicken..
google avatar

Serrell L.

Yelp
Chicken was horrible. Tastes nothing like the old days. Clams were good. I wasn't expecting sugar on my fritters, yuck.

Gina T.

Yelp
The service can improve and the chicken could be better the spicy doesn't have that much crust on it but the regular does not good and I went when they first opened up at 10:00 am on March 2nd Sunday morning and the owner is a big Ass hole he's very disrespectful and when I ordered my chicken and got home all the chicken was spicy and I didn't ask for spicy I asked for regular and the grease on that chicken was old as hell so I took it back and the owner says to me you just ordered it 30 mins ago I said yeah and got home and it was old ass grease you fried the chicken in or had it from the night before old chicken and put it under the light to keep it hot nasty so he gives me more chicken and when I got home opened the bag and it was regular and spicy in there he gave me old chicken with hot regular chicken not cool at all it still was nasty so I threw it in the trash money wasted for sure so I know I won't be coming back here to Jim dandy's not good business I have been coming here for years I will not be coming back I will go across the street to Louisiana fried chicken it's always fresh and they are very friendly never have a problem over there so Jim dandy's go to hell with your nasty old ass chicken grease 10 thumbs down for sure !

Keyon J.

Yelp
This is a good place just to grab a quick meal or when I don't feel like cooking or I don't feel like going to the Louisiana in watts, the chicken is good the corn fritters are good. Including the hot sauce. Very good
google avatar

Gene L.

Yelp
I don't know why I knocked off a star before. This is the only fried chicken that crosses my mind from time to time and that I will drive an hour to get. It's all about the spicy, fritters, rice, potato salad and banana pudding.
google avatar

Yelp
Mmmmm...Yes indeed! We order for about 2 holidays or events a year! Our guests, family, friends, or coworkers always enjoy! We always like the Spicy Fried Chicken. It's not overly salty or spicy. Just fresh and delicious! The owner or I hope he's the owner, an older man, he may be Mexican, Latino, Hispanic He's always kind, accommodating, helpful. The fries, the fritters, the rice, of course the chicken....Mmmmmm, Delicious indeed. The ambiance is decent. It's just a walk in and order and pick up kind of place. Jim Dandy, keep being consistently delicious. Find a good way to add some scrumptious, fresh vegetables to the menu for the Health and Wealth of the community. Thank you for all your hard work over the years! Once I saw an Asian older man, not sure if he bought it.
google avatar

Kaye W.

Yelp
Hood fried chicken spot - but GREAT food, customer service is very good! Not a eat-in place, all to go orders, the wait time is super quick! Very delicious chicken, along with the fritters!
google avatar

Helen O.

Yelp
Finally made it to Jim Dandy, got a 4 pc chicken combo with Cole slaw and rolls, I meant to get the begnets, any how, over all pretty good . I will say there is a weird after taste from the chicken, I don't know if it's the oil or some spice to the chicken. The man that took my order was nice and very quick with my order $9.75 for the meal great amount of food for the cost.
google avatar

Daniel F.

Yelp
When you know, you know! Jim Dandy's is hands down, The Best Fried Chicken in Los Angeles! Located just off the 105 freeway on Vermont and Imperial, you'd be hard pressed to find a better chicken and or at a better price! Don't let the bulletproof glass scare you off, that's just there for character and to keep that wonderful smell inside. Legend has it that's how Jim Dandy's chicken gets it awesome flavor . In all honesty, I've been here many times over the years and have never had an issue with service or in general with being in the hood. I say that because I grew up in the area and im familiar with the stigma associated with this location. Should you choose not to visit then that's on you, your missing out on some great chicken!
google avatar

Jay D.

Yelp
Chicken is never dry always has moisture the hot sauce they give to you is pretty good too. Friendly staff. Place is a little worn out but hey if you're there for the food then you're good to go. They don't have a dine in option anyways
google avatar

Ana A.

Yelp
The best fried chicken, it's juicy and flavorful. They also have some good macaroni salad.
google avatar

Ricardo M.

Yelp
This is the worst should of gone to Popeyes. Uncooked French fríes . No salt no seasoning what so ever on the soggy fries . Also no flavor on the shrimp , cashier had no idea how many come in the order . I Order spicy chicken and they are plain also lukewarm. Worst $31.57 I have ever spend . First and last time .
google avatar

Keith E.

Yelp
I was looking forward to trying this place, but the chicken was very cold and the rolls were hard. They also forgot my order of fries. I was very disappointed.

Cheryl E.

Yelp
Paid $33 for an 8 piece chicken dinner and for an added 5 pieces of fried fish.... But didn't get my fish but a full pan of fried chicken which was not what I paid for. Service was cool, but my order wasn't right and I was charged for something I didn't ask for. I'm quite unhappy.
google avatar

Rochelle E.

Yelp
I always get great customer service when i patronize Jim Dandys my order is always correct and Chicken is fresh

Yelp
I was driving on the 105 freeway and I remembered hearing there was a Jim Dandy Fried Chicken nearby. I remember Jim Dandy from when I was a kid. I got off at Vermont and there it was! Parking was super easy. Guy and his girlfriend out in the parking lot hustling his rap album. I ordered a three piece with a side of potato salad and fritters. Seven bucks out the door. What do you want for $7?! I can't even go to a taco stand or Mc Donald's and get full for that price! I got it to go and took it with me to work. When I opened it up I was AMAZED at the size of the pieces! It was like humongous dinosaur pterodactyl size pieces of chicken! Super good, super crunchy, super hot, fully cooked! It tasted even better with the hot sauce that comes with it! It's nothing like the Jim Dandy I remember as a kid. That was more like Pioneer. But this was super bomb! What I believe is in South Central nobody is going to put up with bad or expensive fried chicken. This was some of the most solid fried chicken I've had for the money in a long time. If people on here are complaining, they have unreasonable expectations for the price. As far as atmosphere, there isn't much. You order your chicken through three inches of bullet proof glass. There isn't really any great dining area. It's more of a walk up place. Neighborhood is pretty rough and dirty. But hey... what do you want for seven bucks?! I'm not a food critic, just a guy that likes cheap fried chicken with a side of nostalgia.
