The Best Tonkotsu Ramen In LA

"This bonafide chain has dozens of locations across North America, and that’s for good reason. Its tonkotsu broth, which forms the base for its dizzying ramen varieties, is consistently strong, whether on its own or in variations like the spicy umami miso or the garlic lovers’ “Cha Cha Cha” bowl." - kelly yeo

Great food, lots of flavour! Me and my friend were here on 4 July 2025 and had two ramen dishes. There are sauces on the table to spice up your dish. Chopsticks are the cheap disposable wooden ones. Loved the meal!

Back at JINYA Ramen Bar in Santa Monica (first discovered it in Austin!) - they have multiple LA locations. Their spicy vegan ramen is one of the best vegetarian bowls I’ve had—filling, flavorful, and customizable. I usually ask them to skip the tofu and sometimes add bok choy or cabbage. They also serve meat options, but honestly, the veggie ramen stands on its own. Some people add egg to the bowl :) Indoor-outdoor seating is nice, service is friendly, and parking’s easy with a paid lot right behind. The menu seems to have changed slightly this visit —missed the little “slurping” message at the bottom of the bowl this time! Still, one of my favorite spots for casual ramen in LA.

I recently visited Jinya Ramen Bar and found the service to be exemplary. The broth I chose was exceptionally creamy, The toppings were fresh, and the tofu had a pleasing texture, with the chili oil providing a nice heat. Nevertheless, the richness of the broth became overwhelming after a few spoonfuls. This is not a reflection on the chef's skills; rather, it aligns with the intended style of this dish. If you appreciate a luxuriously creamy ramen experience, I encourage you to give it a try. Service: Excellent. Ramen: Perhaps a bit too rich for my preferences. 😊🍜

Google
In A Nutshell: -JINYA is a great place to grab some Japanese ramen & friend chicken. -They have a decent happy hour, which I recommend you checking out. -Their Japanese Fried Chicken was really tasty, crunchy & moist w/ huge pieces of chicken. -I also enjoyed their Chicken Ramen Broth, which fills you up on a cold winter evenings. Overall, the service here is really friendly & will come back again for sure.

Google
Very nice place. I was looking for a really good ramen and found this. Jessie was very kind and when I asked her just bring me ramen with meat and spicy she didn’t hesitate. I don’t know what I ate but it was amazing.

Google
Great place for both vegans and non vegans! They were mindful of my allergy and had a great selection for me. My dad really loved their ramen. Their impossible gyoza was a good deal for under $10

Google
The Tokyo curry is just paste with cat food looking chicken grits. It lacked flavor due to lack of ingredients. That being said the staff is lovely!

Amazing braised pork in the Jinya Bun and in the black Tonkatsu. Just melts in your mouth! The noodles were a bit too chewy for me, but I prefer udon texture. Still a cute date night spot and you can sit on the patio or indoors.

Yelp
Most of the time I get JINYA to go and perhaps that's the way to do it I try not to be too critical of restaurant staff but on this particular visit it was clear our waitress wasn't in the mood to work or even try. Wrong orders, wrong drink, brought out the kids meal (for the second time) roughly 15 mins after my food came. This was of course after the original and incorrect ones came out about 10 mins before my food But that all said, the ramen here is good and you get a lot of food for a good price (especially the kids meals) and with the outdoor seating you get to watch all the great crazy that enjoys calling Main Street home

Yelp
This is one of the better ramen places I've been to. I'd even say top 3! The ramen here was DELICIOUS. I had the black tonkonsu pork ramen combo with the karague chicken & salad. The ramen broth was thick and tasty. The noodles were a good firmness. Everything about the food here was great. Highly recommended!! As for the parking, it wasn't too bad considering I went on a Friday night. I parked on the metered street parking but there is also a private lot where people park. The service here was fast. We sat down and ordered the food. Within 8 minutes all our food came. The servers were also nice and accommodating. I sat outside because the inside seating was closed at 830 pm. So be aware if you are sensitive to the outside air! They do have heating umbrellas which they setup so that was nice. It's more of a date spot than a family spot.

Yelp
Food is good, but they are sloooow! Been here twice when I was checking out the nearby temporary exhibit for V of BTS. No matter what size group you're in, it takes a while for the food and a very long time to flag someone to get you your bill. I've dined inside twice and haven't been outside in the patio, so maybe it's different out there. I've gotten their iced green tea ($3), hiyashi cold noodles ($18.80 -- a summer menu item), and the happy hour jinya bun ($4). The cold noodles are delicious on a hot day. The jinya bun is a slab of pork belly in a peking duck kind of thick bun (though not really a bun in the traditional Asian sense -- more of an open face bun) -- great to try, but can get filling if you're ordering this plus a full bowl of ramen or something else. I had parked on the street nearby, so scored some free 2 hour parking. There's limited paid street parking closer to Jinya, but I don't recall seeing an actual lot for this place. Also note that they only have one restroom - single stall for all genders, so you may have to wait a while if there's a lot of people at Jinya.

Yelp
Stopped by here for lunch on the weekends and there were still plenty of seats inside and on the patio. We got the Yuzu and Tonkatsu Black ramen. Yuzu was not bad--had a lot of citrusy flavor but you get sick of it after few bites. Tonkatsu black, on the other hand, was good! Not too salty, just enough of flavor...it was one of the better ramen bowls I had in a while. We did get a combo (salad + fried chicken) for one of the bowl and it came with 4 pieces of chicken and few pieces of leaves for the "salad" and no dressing. I honestly thought it was just decorations because you would think salad would at least come with some dressing. Servers were nice but not as attentive. I had to flag them down few times for water.

Yelp
Huge selection of Ramen that tasted great. Fast friendly service. Parking in the back of the location was only 1dollar.

Yelp
Yummy black ramen. Very flavorful. Egg cooked perfectly. Chase very tender. Would def come back and order again.

Yelp
Update: Great appetizers - generous portions, reasonably priced, flavorful. We enjoyed the Caramelized Cauliflower, the Sautéed Broccolini, and the Salmon Don poke bowl.

Yelp
I love this Jinya Ramen Bar in Santa Monica! I've been to many Jinya places and this place is very nice. I've been to several Jinya locations like the one in Utah and a few ones in Arizona and now this. Service was pretty nice. Our server was sweet and very kind. I came in during my birthday and I used my birthday coupon using the app and they gave me a very nice mochi dessert with the soft cold cream that tasted like ice cream. Our ramen was delicious! I only got a few appetizers as I was not that hungry. I had the curry small plate & the bun, both tasted great! The ramen can be pretty filling and they have large service which is good! We enjoyed our time here. The server and all employees are kind and very attentive. Highly recommend if you want a quick bite to eat or want a delicious ramen :)

Yelp
Well, the restaurant is very busy, being the only ramen spot by 3rd St Promenade, but if you really crave good ramen and are willing to drive, the places at Sawtelle are more preferable. The good news: the crispy chicken (karaage) with ponzu sauce is delicious and worth getting. The bad news: the Jinya Tonkotsu Black is a bit lacking. There just isn't enough flavor with the dish and the pork, so you have to make sure you get a good spoonful of broth with each bite. That's about it, it's middle of the road. Better than Silverlake Ramen, but not one I'd take over the ramen joints on Sawtelle.

Yelp
Excellent if you know what you want , I ordered the medium creamy sauce with pork . Limited sauces on try, makes one feel like your robbing someone of sauce. Possibly have a fixed station to add chili or soy sauces. service :Friendly, patient. Nice atmosphere , nice location. Clean, but wish the had paper disposable paper cups for water , instead of used old plastic cups.

Yelp
Back when I was living in Santa Monica in 2016, Jinya was towards the top of my list of ramen spots. Fast forward 7 years later, visiting the area, plus my gf loves ramen, we decided to give it a try. Luckily we got there and there wasn't a wait, and we got seated immediately. I dunno what it was, maybe my ramen palate has expanded but the black tonkotsu broth and noodles were middle of the road for me. The texture of the noodles were a little too hard for my liking, and the broth was just ok. It's not like it was bad or inedible, it was just ok with no real standout or 'oh damn' flavor that I remembered. The soft boiled egg was still legit though. The gyoza and karaage had little to no flavor and wasn't as stand out as I remembered. We also ordered a side of the wontons, but those were flavorless. The prices are standard LA pricing for ramen, so you are looking at around $20 for a bowl, more if you include add-ons. They have plenty of outdoor seating, with limited indoor seating. The variety of ramen options has expanded over the years, which means the bar is constantly getting higher. However, I think that if you are new to ramen, it's a great intro and a solid option to satisfy a ramen craving.

Yelp
Came here with a group of friends. Knights 'round the table, we filled up the rectangular fire pit outside. I ordered the chef's special, The Red Garnet. The Red Garnet is: Vegetable broth: pork chashu, spinach, green onion, kikurage, white onion with chili garlic sauce. Served with thick noodles. Excellent. It's mildly spicy, but not too overwhelming. I think the single thing that fully uplifts the taste is the diced white onions. It makes it a little bit more spicy, and levels up the broth to a whole new level. Really enjoyed this one because of its unique ingredients.

Yelp
Jinya has come a long way since I first dined here 8 years ago. It wasn't the best experience back then. However, I'm happy to say that I'm now a regular here. Food quality has improved significantly, and I can still always count on good service and that awesome community fireplace dining table. You HAVE to try the new karaage chicken ramen. It's next level delish, and that chicken is just perfect
google avatar

Yelp
Fun restaurant along main street in Santa Monica. They make their own noodles in house. I got a shrimp and pork broth ramen with thick noodles and shrimp dumplings. There are a lot of add on options.

Yelp
I found this place from watching KTLA 5 on a food segment and it looked really good, so I wanted to give it a try. It's been a couple of times now that I've eaten from here, ordered online and it's pretty quick and easy. Just the problem that there is, they don't email when the food is ready at all. So you have to go on your own, I suggest they should try and fix that pls. The times I've been there it's been really crowded and I see why, the ramen is amazingly good! I do recommend coming to try the spicy chicken ramen! They have an indoor and outdoor dining areas. Both full of hungry people

Yelp
Jimya's ramen is nothing short of fantastic, served in an authentic Japanese Ramen Bar that captures the essence of culinary excellence. The Bao, a delightful addition, mirrors the authenticity that defines this gem. Our visit during the event left us enamored with the vibrant community and the inviting atmosphere that envelops Jimya. A genuine taste of Japan, right in the heart of town. Kudos to an unforgettable dining experience! Now I need the check out the Phoenix location!

Yelp
All in all - a tasty, efficient, affordable meal. Space is good - sizeable outdoor dining with a good sized indoor dining area. Service is quick (as you'd expect w/ fast casual), and meal was hot, fresh and tasty. Prices are decent for the portion size. They also have a HH from 3-6 featuring food and drink specials. Will swing back and possibly update to 5 stars.

Yelp
I was so shocked that this place was here this whole time three vegan options for Ramen noodles that you have to try if you haven't guessed I'm a vegan so I choose my food wisely love the atmosphere very convenient towards the beach the food it's absolutely delicious

Yelp
Worst worst service the skinny girl with the hoodie i think her name was xia she was the worst server ever. bad attitude she was getting they brought my food in 45 mins . they need to get rid of her! she doesn't know how to talk and food was cold too. They should think twice who to hire .

Yelp
I came here with a friend on a Saturday night at around 7:15 pm and we easily got a table outside with no wait. The outdoor area is cute with lots of seating! The staff were all super helpful, our server told us the black Tonkotsu ramen and one of the vegan ones were their most popular, so I got the black Tonkotsu ramen and switched from thin to thick noodles. The noodles were super super good, I highly recommend the thick noodles. The meat was also very good! The broth itself was good, but honestly nowhere near as good as the Tonkotsu ramen you can get in Sawtelle, in my opinion. I tried it both as is and added some of the hot sauce and other seasoning they have, which I love and went very well, but still not as good as some I have had in Sawtelle. However, if you are in the area I still recommend coming and trying it out! They have lots of other items on the menu I'd love to try as well next time!

Yelp
One of the lesser known ramen places in Santa Monica (most on Sawtelle), but I'd say this ramen is pretty good, albeit a little oily for me. I ordered the yuzu ramen and my friend ordered the black garlic and we split the takoyaki. Flavor wise, ramen was super rich, wish it was on the lighter side. Huge portions, wasn't able to finish half of mine lol service was slightly better than average, not super fast but not slow and the waitress checked on us a few times. I'd skip the takoyaki, nothing super special here. Ambiance is slightly more nice than a typical ramen shop, but nothing too fancy by any means. There's street parking or you can parking in a lot behind for 2 hrs.

Yelp
Never been to this location it was amazing the seating the music, the service the Ramen love being at Jinya it's my favorite place

Yelp
Always a hit! We truly enjoy this Ramen bar and enjoy taking friends there for their first experience.

Yelp
Love me some Ramen and it kicks at Jinya. Delicious options and great service. Eat at any of their locations - and thank me later!
google avatar

Chance C.

Yelp
Delicious. Always crave it once there is *rain* on the forecast in LA. One thing, does the broth look a little skimpy to you? Feel like the bowl gets more shallow year over year. Flavor makes up for it, though, just need a splash more! Service was great. Nice vibe.
google avatar

Akeesa G.

Yelp
Ambiance: This place is so cute, fire place outside was a cool feature. Inside, you can essentially see inside the kitchen. The tables are fairly close, but they work. Service: Didn't have to wait too long for a Saturday night, waited a bit after seating, but after that, it was smooth sailing. Food: I've never had ramen before this point, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I ordered the mild chicken ramen, but I should've gone with the spicy version. It wasn't bad at all, but I could've used the extra kick. Dumplings were really good, and I love that they have all the sauce on the table! Wasn't really a fan of the salad, though. Street parking is 2 hours, so plan accordingly.
google avatar

Amanda Z.

Yelp
Overall it's pretty good. Only complaint is the Tonkotsu Original ramen is very salty. I had to add water into the soup to water it down.

Gabriella R.

Yelp
Ramen was so good! Had a little bit of spice, which was delicious. I also got the lychee martini, which is one of the best lychee martinis I've had!!
google avatar

Arden P.

Yelp
Highly recommend! Got the JINYA Tonkotsu Black ramen, it was super good. The only cons being that the chashu and egg did not appear to be marinated-both were super good though. The egg was nice and gooey whereas the chashu was super tender and soft. Broth was thick and very delicious, I was able to ask for some hot chili oil too!
google avatar

Keith H.

Yelp
One of two ramen bars visited during my recent visit to SoCal (the other was RAKKAN in downtown Los Angeles), I preferred JINYA in Santa Monica just a tad more. When it came down to it, JINYA serves some dang good noodles. We ordered Tonkatsu and Wonton Chicken bowls with the garlic shrimp spring rolls to start. As for the noodles in the Tonkatsu, I found them to be perfectly firm, extra thick and in just the right amount. The pork slices were melt in the mouth and a whole seasoned egg added to the robustness of the dish. The broth was extremely rich--perhaps too rich, if that is possible. Not for the faint of heart. The wonton ramen was also delicious. The wontons had a nice gingery flavor and good firmness with thinner noodles. Service was on point and friendly. A really solid noodle bar that is easily accessible and well run. (4 stars).
google avatar

Ayoosh K.

Yelp
I came here for the brand and everything was good except the size of protein. The tonkotsu spicy broth tasted delicious. I don't think it beats some of tonkotsu ramen in Sawtelle. Service was good. Outside seating is great with a fire island.
google avatar

Monee G.

Yelp
This place definitely puts the "Mid" in Mediocre, I've had this ramen restaurant bookmarked for yeeears. My expectations weren't met at all, they missed the mark so hard. Especially in comparison to so many other ramen shops the food here was flat. This is good for beginners or people who've only had cup of noodles and packaged ramen. Even then certain brands have more depth of flavor than what I had here. According to yelp it said the live wait time was 5 mins but when we got there as a party of 3 it was not. I checked in as we stood outside waiting to be seated, the inside is very small but that's something I'm acquainted too when it comes to most ramen shops. I don't know if they do this to give the Japanese aesthetic but we're in America and I wish more ramen shops would open up locations with more space to lessen wait times. The host brought us over to a dirty table that she had to come back and wipe down, we're starving so my mom orders a $5 Nikuman (bao) which is an insane price btw along with shrimp wonton ramen. I had asked for house salad, Tokyo curry rice, with JINYA tonkotsu black ramen and my niece ordered edamame, a side of rice and JINYA chicken ramen. Neither one of them have ever had authentic ramen and this was not the location to do so, the salad was ok seemed like they took a grip of garnish and slapped it on a plate and poured all the dressing in the middle so there was a thick glop of sauce sitting in one spot. I gave it to my mom, they munched away at the edamame and our ramen arrived about 30 minutes later and we saw a lot of other tables complaining they were waiting between 45-60 minutes on their food. Ramen should NEVER take that long, There were only 2 cooks, unless one was on break, 2 servers and a hostess trying to run food while seating people and the manager. You could tell they were absolutely swamped with takeout orders, being neglectful to the ones dining in. Food carriers were showing up in droves to stand at the pick up area outside and inside, some waited so long they cancelled and left to continue to deliver from other restaurants. After all that time me and my niece never received our rice dishes so we asked for that to be removed and cancelled all together. I also wish the server let me know they had a Tokyo rice curry + house salad combo because that's exactly what I ordered separately and would've saved me money while being decent portions. My mom was intrigued with her ramen the first few mouthfuls and then once her tastebuds adjusted could tell she wasn't as impressed. The only good thing my niece had to say about hers was the chicken melted in her mouth. As for me I tried to add fresh garlic, sauces etc but there was no UMAMI it gave watered down concentrated broth. I usually do this little subconscious dance if I'm eating something really good and it never happened. For $20 this was not worth it at all, very little broth and it came with small noodles. In my mind reading the menu, thick noodles is usually Udon, but the thick noodles is regular size ramen so that makes a difference when it comes down to being filling. If the broth was rich and substantial I could see why people would order small noodles so they can order extra without getting as full fast. The soft boiled egg was overcooked, and the chashu had too much fat. If I wanted all fat I could've gotten butter instead but I wanted protein! I was still hungry and dissatisfied but I didn't want to order more broth or noodles because the kitchen was struggling so bad, I was worried we'd have to wait another eon. Even considered dessert but there's an Urth Cafe across the way, and didn't want to sit in those uncomfortable chairs for one more minute. The wooden seats are very hard and not pleasant to sit for prolonged periods of time. Unfortunately, I had high hopes but I wouldn't return.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday night with friends, and it was definitely amazing experience. We got to try some hot sake and it was a great started to the dinner. The broth of the ramen is so thick and tasty, noodles are chewy. This will be a spot you can't go wrong with any order!
google avatar

Yelp
Customer beware. I got food poisoning from the chicken ramen. I ordered from grubhub and wasn't able to get a refund.
google avatar

Yelp
This spot is a must-visit for anyone who loves Asian cuisine and great ramen. With a wide variety of menu options, including vegetarian ramens, there is something for everyone. The cozy seating by the fire pit adds to the experience, making it a perfect spot for a chilly weather.
google avatar

Yelp
This is an amazing ramen spot if you're ever in the area and love a good food spot! Service was super fast even with the place filled. Ambiance is nice and I'll definitely be back :)

Yelp
WOW WOW WOW! I've never been to a ramen place where I had this good service! Usually when I go to ramen restaurants I get horrible service...but I just left with my friends and wow! My server Roxy was AMAZING!!! Like wow! She was so much fun, so sweet and told me all about the menu and helped me choose my favorites! Made the entire experience worth while! Definitely a must try!

Yelp
Jinya Ramen proved to be a delightful surprise with their Vegan Spicy Creamy Ramen option. As someone new to vegan ramen, I was pleasantly surprised by the flavorful experience. The dish wasn't overly spicy, striking a perfect balance, and I found myself eager to indulge in it again. Despite a brief wait of around 20 minutes for a table inside, the service remained commendable. Overall, Jinya Ramen's menu has me looking forward to returning and exploring more of their offerings. I would say if you're expecting a large portion of ramen, to not expect that as the portions are a bit on the smaller side but I can appreciate that since I always have trouble finishing ramen.
google avatar

Daniella A.

Yelp
Even though the food came out fast, me and my partner's ramen came out cold. The impossible gyoza was really bland and also came out cold. It just didn't taste fresh. Update: we came around 7 on Friday and ordered the spicy chicken ramen and spicy tonkotsu ramen. I ordered corn and egg on the side but it came later than my ramen. The egg also didn't come out hot and fresh.
google avatar

Leesung S.

Yelp
I think this is far better than kopan ramen sushi bar for sure they know how to treat their customers the impossible tacos are also delicious and it really is "impossible" that they are this good the ramen is on par and there's gluten-free and soy-free options for my mother too Arghh! sometimes it can be frustrating not finding restaurants with food sensitivitys
google avatar

Travis E.

Yelp
Ramen was aiight. Flavor okay. Small amount of chicken - $20 for a bowl of noodles in a super okay broth. Underwhelming, but not terrible - just found a lack of value from what I experienced. I ordered delivery and did appreciate the broth and noodles being in separate containers so it didn't get soggy.
google avatar

The One ..

Yelp
To be honest, the service was wonderful. I would give it 5 stars. No, my ramen was sub par. I would have to give it 2 stars for effort. If the ownership can retrain the chefs, I think it can get better but if everybody is receiving well meant like we did, they will have a hard time competing with places other chain style ramen houses like; Hiro Nori, Tatsunoya, Santouka, Daikokuya, Shin Sen Gumi. Quality control is the hardest part and keeping it consistent is even harder but those are the most important for restaurant businesses and much attention can be given to those items. Jinya, Gambare!
google avatar

Billy B.

Yelp
Food was good, service was alright but the bill charged 12% tax (Santa Monica sales tax is 10.25%). Manager claimed it only happened to our bill but who really knows. We didn't get it adjusted because didn't bother to but I would double check if you've got a big bill.

Yelp
Jinya is my new favorite ramen spot. I've visited the downtown LA location and the Santa Monica location which is currently only open for take out. The restaurant gets pretty busy at certain times but there's usually a short wait time if any. The atmosphere can be a little busy but it's mostly chill. I enjoy stopping in for lunch to people watch and have a delicious bowl of ramen. My favorite is the spicy chicken ramen (hot) and gyoza. I like that the chicken is juicy and lean with the perfect amount of spice. I highly recommend Jinya. Enjoy!
google avatar

Mike T.

Yelp
I was up om Main Street today for MacBookPro issues, which once resolved, let me famished and in pursuit of a quality meal. Found it at Jinya. Their menu is wide and varied, something for everyone. The service is excellent, the presentation exquisite. I felt like a guest of the Imperial Household Agency in Tokyo.. I got a mildly spicy tonkatsu noodle dish. The broth was fragrant, the noodles firm a delicious , all in all an excellent luncheon. This was my first visit but sure shootin won't be my last.

Yelp
I have got to say that I love their creamy vegan ramen here. Tastes the best on a cold day! I recommend getting on a reservation list or ordering in advance because this location gets packed very quickly. Parking is also a little hard to find since this location is on Main Street in Santa Monica. The vegan ramen comes with a creamy broth, green vegetable noodles, green onions, tofu, spinach, and mushrooms. I like to add corn and crispy onions and garlic in my broth as well. Once i've tried vegan ramen here I can't seem to go back to have it any other way. Highly recommend this place to anyone!

Yelp
Jiniya has the best spicy ramen. Pia & Jackie are very nice & prompt with their service. They do guide on the spice level.

Yelp
This food is very good and refreshing. This play exceeded my expectations. I got the won ton noodle soup and it is phenomenal. Great service and great food. 10/10 must try again.
