"Joe’s Bakery has been open for 60 years, and there’s still a wait almost every weekend morning. Everyone’s here for the same thing—carne guisada, huevos rancheros, barbacoa, and the world’s crispiest bacon (call our bluff, we dare you) served on the fluffiest flour tortillas in town. This is an old-school joint with a lively, bare-bones dining room set to a soundtrack of Tejano jukebox jams. It’s a perfect cross-section of Austin throughout the years. "Founded in 1962 by Joe and Paula Avila, this historic Mexican bakery is a pillar of the East Austin community, now run by the Avilas’s granddaughter Regina Estrada. Diners will first encounter the exceptional daytime menu, with wonderfully tender and juicy barbacoa breakfast, excellent migas, filling lunch tacos like chicken and beef picadillo tacos served with diner’s choice of flour, corn, or crispy shelled tortillas, and rice and beans, and a hard-to-beat $12 rotating daily special served Tuesday through Friday with tea. The restaurant has also long been committed to providing resources and services to its community. Estrada is an advocate for East Austin, ensuring people are informed about local politics, and she even directly registers voters. Squeeze in at a table next to the tempting bakery case or on one of the outside tables. Vibe check: Very old-school.
