"Joe is the flagship of the West Village coffee bar fleet, founded 20 years ago on this quiet stretch of Waverly, and setting the ball rolling where coffee bars are concerned. The coffee is top notch, with drip stronger than usual. Seating indoors and out is profuse for a West Village coffee bar, the espresso drinks are expertly made, and breakfast tacos available till they run out. Stays open till 8 p.m., which means you can grab a cup on the way to your evening engagements." - Robert Sietsema

Stopped in for a quick bite before an interview and it all helped to calm me down- the tasty chocolate croissant, the matcha tea, friendliness of the staff, and the vibes. As I sat drinking my tea, I noticed that the staff knew everyone who came in by name and by order (or almost everyone). It was so nice to hear a local coffee shop really being loved by the locals. I hope I get the job so I can become like those regulars I saw. Also, everything was reasonably priced for NYC!

Good spot to work and hang. It’s a chain but doesn’t feel like one! Great location too

Joe Coffee Co is one of my favorite spots in the neighborhood. They serve up amazing coffee, have the best pastries and baked goods, and even offer breakfast tacos from King David Tacos. I love their seasonal rosemary maple latte. When I’m feeling some breakfast, my go to is the Moms Migas breakfast taco.

Coffee was amazing and staff was super welcoming and nice. I also really liked the atmosphere and the interior design of the cafe.

Small coffee bar right around the corner from our hotel in Washington Square Park. Good service and delicious coffee.

Google
This review has more to do with their payment system than with staff or service. I stopped in to get a quick scone and nothing else. Since the work involved was minimal, I pressed no tip, but the system (which has $2 as its default) charged me $2 anyway. I don't mind tipping when there is work involved, but when I press "no tip" and am charged anyway, it leaves an incredibly bad taste in my mouth.

While I enjoy a good coffee shop atmosphere. I felt like the staff was having a pow wow about customers the previous day before. Overhearing snickering and talking about customers in a negative manner is really unprofessional. I hope that they understand that they are working and to gossip isn't part of the job description.

Ducked in here to hide from the chill. I’m fussy with my chai lattes but the one here was fantastic! Strong chai flavour and just the right amount of sweet. A very nice and welcoming place.

Yelp
- I spend a lot of time at coffee shops so my reviews are tougher - Laptop friendly - A lot of locals frequent here at what seems like all day, so it does have a nice neighborhoody local vibe, despite being a chain - I found the coffee to be higher on the quality end for a not so boutique boutique chain - No paywall WiFi! - Good amount of seating as well as seating on the outside Con - Only downside is there's often just 1 person working there so I'd have to wait upwards to 1-2 minutes for something as simple as a drip coffee. Won't ding them for this as coffee shops are just trying to manage their costs and this place has a lot of pros (as mentioned above) P.S. - I manage a database of coffee shops with detailed info on seating, WiFi Speed, etc. DM me for more info =)

Yelp
I came here on Saturday morning at 9am. This is the original Joe Coffee. I ordered a large drip coffee. When I asked the barista about the origin of the beans, she informed me it was a mix of Peru and Guatemala. It was very dark and bitter for me. The atmosphere was nice though. I think most of the customers live in the neighborhood. I saw all of them greeted each other when they walked in. Clean bathroom and fast WiFi.

Yelp
Even though Joe Coffee has locations all over Manhattan, this is the original coffee shop on Waverly Place that opened twenty years ago. I was visiting New York City awhile back and stopped here for a cup after a day in the West Village. The coffee shop itself is cute and cozy and I enjoyed the nice hospitality. I appreciate neighborhood coffee shops like this that are a staple in their surrounding community. Great coffee and great place to relax or do some studying. You can also order their products online and have them delivered to your home.

Yelp
Simple and tasty! Best location SoHo neighborhood. Cute coffee shop with interesting art works on the walls! Got Quartado and simply enjoyed it. They have place for work or study as well, but we got our coffee to go and enjoyed every sip!

Yelp
This coffee shop is so adorable! The place itself is small, but it's very cozy and welcoming. I got a drip coffee, which was really good and smooth. The people working were incredibly friendly with not only myself, but every single person that came in while I was there. Highly recommend going here!

Ashley J.

Yelp
Super good coffee with over the top service. I got a large iced latte with not milk and vanilla syrup ($7.50) it's so strong and didn't disappoint. I will definitely be returning to this coffee shop, nice ambiance and tasty drinks

Leslie C.

Yelp
This is a very cozy friendly cafe with good service, a friendly barista and a clean restroom. The decaf mocha latte was good but not great as it was simply not chocolatey enough for me.

Ellen C.

Yelp
We came by this cafe after dining at Olio e Piu next door. When we first entered, it gave student cafe vibes. There were a couple people working/studying. I ordered their seasonal special - a lavender earl gray oat milk latte, size small. The cup was definitely small, but I'm guessing it's once of those cups which are bigger than they actually look. The latte was really yummy and tasted quite light. It was $6.25 though so a bit hefty of a price for the size.

Yoandra V.

Yelp
I almost didn't want to write this review because i had so many memories with this coffee shop. But I really enjoyed spending time at this place. It was a wonderful friendly neighborhood coffee. I am giving it a 4 because the coffee was good, it wasnt great like oh my god i fell in love with it. But it was the place in general. There was something about this spot that felt like my favorite coffee shop in LA. It felt like a nice break from the hustle and bustle that is manhattan. It felt peaceful, not too quiet, yet a safe space to study, go to the bathroom, drink a coffee and a pastry and even chat in the patio with a friend. That said, this place is small, with a counter a couple tables, and a little front patio where you can sit for a moment. But many people usually take their coffee to go so on a week day, its a nice place to sit for a moment and drink a nice coffee.

Briana H.

Yelp
One of the many cute coffee shops we passed while traipsing around NYC for the day! We were happy for the pick me up and also to find somewhere with a restroom. Baristas were quick to get us our beverages and we were off on our way to continue exploring!

Vincent P.

Yelp
Some mid-day coffee is always needed. I visited to grab a cup of coffee after my lunch meal. The Chai Latte was a good refreshment after our meal and gave some warmth for the cold day. Their branding is also eye catching, the blue packaging did play a part in contributing to my reason for visiting. Overall, from a traveler's perspective, this is a nice neighborhood coffee shop with your basic coffee drinks. Nothing special or unique on the menu, but it gets the job done, 3.5 stars.

David M.

Yelp
Solid cup of coffee and also a great Matcha Latte! There are a lot of Joe Coffee Company locations around NYC now but I love visiting this location.

Marisa M.

Yelp
Let you use the restroom for the price of a drink. Thanks. Had a blackberry spritz and holy cow it hit. Thanks to the barista for being speedy and sweet.

Grace L.

Yelp
Came to a coffee shop to get some work done. First of all, they don't have a bathroom which is really unfortunate because it's a coffee shop. They also don't have any outlets inside so your time inside is pretty much determined by how long your battery lasts and how long you can not pee for (after drinking coffee). There are also few seating options inside - 2 window areas (2 seats each so 4 seats here) and a large 4 seat table. But there are a lot of outside seating. Also has wifi! Iced large latte ($6.10) - this itself was good, pretty strong. Adding flavored syrup or different milk is an extra dollar so I just opted for whole milk and added the simple syrup myself from the sugar table. Large tumeric latte ($5.60) - also good, but we got a large and were presented with a small instead. It was only a 50 cent difference so we didn't make a fuss, but disappointed. While we were there, they've messed up multiple orders by making the warm versions - including my iced latte. So it was chaotic and a pretty long wait for them to realize and fix it.

Isabella G.

Yelp
I ordered an iced latte that somehow got made without the espresso machine being touched? Instead my "espresso" came out of a metal tin looking incredibly dull. The drink came out tasting like slightly flavored milk.

Jordan W.

Yelp
First came to this location 6 years ago, when my ex girlfriend convinced me I needed to move out of Hell's Kitchen and she was insistent on showing me how great things are "downtown". Came here today because I had an hour to kill between prior plans I had and a brunch at 2. Great staff, great coffee, and a great location.

Zain R.

Yelp
We stumbled across this coffee shop as we were walking from Stonewall to Washington Square park and needed some refuge from the cold. It was the best place to get a coffee. I didn't know I needed a boost of positive energy until I encountered the people working here. Everyone was beaming with positivity. I cannot actually describe it in words but from the interaction with the cashier to the baristas making the drinks it was all like watching the most efficient yet happy form of humans making coffee nonstop while singing and interacting with customers. Imagine a coffee shop where it's so cramped yet you are not upset about the space because the feeling of just being in there is giving you life. My latte tasted amazing and while the pastries in the display were calling my name, I used some sort of will power which I don't know came from where but I did not order any more food. My latte tasted amazing and I cannot wait to become a regular at Joe Coffee Company if I ever end up moving to NYC.

Jonah K.

Yelp
Good to support locally owned and locally roasted coffee businesses. There are so few in NYC it's surprising to me. The coffee here is very good, I will try to support them on my visits to the city. Excellent service, nice people, and wonderful coffee.

Ben R.

Yelp
Still just the best latte pretty much anywhere in the world. And I love this original Joe's location.

Neha G.

Yelp
A great neighborhood feel coffee shop! Right at the corner of Gay St. & Waverly, this cozy spot offers a few outdoor tables and two benches to sit and enjoy the local vibe. Good people and a beautiful street. Due to covid no indoor seating or restrooms. Grab coffee, tea, snacks and enjoy a perfect afternoon.

Darya S.

Yelp
Cute place with a bunch of seating and relaxed ambiance that's work-heaven. There are a couple benches outside, too. I know they're known for their quality beans, but te house brew was too acidic for me. I went with the ginger turmeric tea, and while pricey at almost $4, it was pretty refreshing and comforting. I dug it. Guy and girl at the counter were friendly and welcoming. Wish they had a bathroom.

Bridgette S.

Yelp
I meeeaaaan, talk about perfect location??? This cute lil coffee shop is right in the heart of West Village (my fav neighborhood) and we had dinner reservations at Petite Boucherie in a few hours so we decided to sit in this spot to grab some drinks and chill out. It was soooooo hot out (96 degrees) so we both went for an iced chai tea!! Soo yummy and flavourful. $4 for a pretty big cup! Very nice vibe. I would definitely come back to this Joe Coffee spot to do some work/relax and write. Love this spot & can't wait to try their pastries!

Ingrid E.

Yelp
Amazing scones and love the way they make my coffee!!! Have yet to try their breakfast burritos but i bet they are just as amazing as their desserts!

Ana M.

Yelp
I have lived around the corner for years and this was frequently my go-to. ...unfortunately, there is a new assistant manager(?) and I've never seen someone at that shop be so rude and unprofessional when handling fellow staff and customers. Completely different vibe, now. Culture is just not the same and I have no interest of spending time in the outdoor cafe or ordering coffee like I used to. What a bummer. Off to Rosecrans I go I guess.

Lauren S.

Yelp
Loved this coffee shop! Very cute inside and looks like one of those shops you would spend an entire afternoon in just sipping on your coffee and enjoying a book. My boyfriend and I split a coffee and a chocolate doughnut. We just got the regular drip and it was a very nice cup of coffee. Plus the mugs they serve it in are really cute. The coffee did not have a bite and was pretty smooth. The doughnut had an interesting texture, there was a powdery outside to the yeast inside. With the coffee it was good but by itself nothing to be excited about. We will definitely visit this shop again when we are in NYC!

Neeva R.

Yelp
my sister fell on her arm outside of the store, and two workers immediately helped us out. they were so nice to her and the rest of us, and we couldn't be more grateful. even though they were decently busy, they still stopped and helped us. thank you so much to the amazing workers! if you want somewhere that has great costumer service, this is the place :)

Tsvika K.

Yelp
For the last 15 years .... yeh , 15 years... I religiously drink my quad Espresso at this place . Nothing change - Quality and Consistency !!!! Fabulous service , no matter if their are new baristas that just started to pour. The other locations that i divert into sometimes .... (UES / UWS / GC / Bryant park) Get you the same results . Number 1 coffee place in NYC - Hands down .

Bob D.

Yelp
Old coffee. Throw the old stuff old and make it new. It's coffee and cheap to make. I could not drink the cup. It was barely warm and very bitter.

Maggie B.

Yelp
Unpleasant all around. Barista was unfriendly and condescending, looking aggravated when I asked for their sweetener options. Didn't know that was such an offensive question! I'm a server myself and know for sure I didn't act in any way to warrant such an attitude from her. The coffee itself was bad. So expensive too. I spent the rest of my day upset with myself for spending nearly $8 on one of the worst iced coffees I've ever bought. Had that unpleasant metallic, headache-inducing quality to it. Tried my friend's drink as well and it just tasted... odd. We weren't able to finish them. Don't waste your time or money here.

Gab G.

Yelp
I find that Joe coffee can be hit or miss, but I had a great experience on a Sunday morning at this location. Ordered an iced coffee and Underwest donut (carwash is my go-to) and had no complaints. Limited seating but my boyfriend and I grabbed two spots at the communal table.

Randol H.

Yelp
Competent enough coffee shop, but staff weren't really up on the menu. No public restrooms, a fact which was not disclosed until after I ordered. That's fine, but what really set me off and makes me write such a forceful review is that they wouldn't void the order. If they had started making the coffee, that would be one thing and I'm happy to pay. In this case, the order hasn't even been started and yet my request to cancel was not carried forward.

R J.

Yelp
A middle aged while male harassed (loudly) and touched my friends, then proceed to follow us out to the outdoor seating area. As we politely asked him to give us space, he verbally abused us with discussing sexist and racist language. He was very threatening and full of hate. Everyone sat and watched it happen. After a long time, a staff came outside and asked us to leave because that guy "is obviously not leaving", then they proceed to imply he's not mentally stable so we should've just left but he had normal clothes on and was sipping a coffee they served him inside the coffee shop. Then we were told that this person has been harassing women continuously at this location for a very long time, and the management never did anything with it. We saw many families with children at this location so it's a very dangerous situation. After the incident, we did not see any management came out. There was no apologize from the company, or any compensation. I was a regular customer, but that's till now. A company that continuously allows hate crime to happen in their space is not one I feel comfortable with. Stop being hypocritical and actually do something for your customer for once!

Shelby V.

Yelp
Never actually heard of anyone having a bad experience at a Joe Coffee- I certainly haven't had one. The people that work here kind of take of take you away from the grime of NYC and Greenwich village is the best place for that. Kind people that are knowledgeable and able to efficiently walk me through the ordering process even with my order alterations (oatly, light ice, in my own reusable cup, etc.) Seating is sparce, but most people get theirs to go so you'll often find a seat. If it's a nice day choose OUTSIDE ON THEIR BENCHES! Love Joe

Charlie S.

Yelp
I come here several times a week for a cup of coffee while reading the newspaper, listening to music or reading a book. The coffee is always top notch , the staff are very friendly and communicative & the overall vibe is accepting & open. It's a great place to escape from the city and get lost in some coffee.

Alfred O.

Yelp
Hands down best coffee beans I bought in NYC. Their house brew is DOPE. It's now officially my favorite dripping coffee. Nutty, rich, and not sour at all. Service is awesome and a really cozy environment in the corner of the village. Loved it

Bizzy B.

Yelp
I really like this Joe Coffee.  The Lattes are excellent, I had an iced Matcha Latte with Almond Milk last week and it was really wonderful in texture and flavor.  The pastries are OK, but I love that when you walk into this shop, even if there are people inside, you don't really feel crammed inside.  It's small, but also roomy with tables on one side and a long bench that's surprisingly comfortable on the other.  Just cute and a great grab and go coffee shop or sit and relax and watch the world go by here.

Elaine H.

Yelp
In terms of consistency, Joe never lets me down. Have been drinking at four or five different locations (forgot the exact number), and was addicted to the smooth taste and everlasting scent from the coffee. Loved every single sip! The room was also decorated warm and cosy - this really helps on a freezing winter morning (like today). Great chain coffee shop!

Alexandra L.

Yelp
The Quick: Flavorful coffee at an adorable location on my favorite block (gay street!) The Details: Joe's is the coffee lovers coffee shop. It's cute, tucked away in a little corner on Gay Street. It's always crowded but the line goes fast. If you happen to nab a spot early, it would be the perfect location to read a book and people watch. The actual coffee taste amazing and blows Starbucks out of the water. it's a nice spot, I would return. The Details: A little pricey meaning you can't get coffee for $.99 like McDonald's. But you get what you pay for.

Ann L.

Yelp
CASH ONLY. Went to try Joe The Art of Coffee - small coffee shop. Bunch of hipsters in there when I went. Got a Cafe Latte $3.75 small which is tiny. Large is $4.25. Tasted fine, nice latte art. Was standing by the window because all the seats were taken, but after a few minutes some people left.

Joseph T.

Yelp
Joe is a cute little West Village outpost of the New York City stalwart chain, Joe. It's got a nice selection of pastries like maple waffle donuts, banana bread and cherry scones along with good, medium roast coffee and espresso drinks. It's not my favorite, but it'll do.

Jenny S.

Yelp
NOT the ideal cafe to study at because there's NO WI FI (which the workers claim ensures that no one spends the whole day sitting at their cafe) they sell doughnut plant donuts & other breads/cookies/pastries ---Iced coffee: $3 is kind of expensive for a small & i wasn't fond of the "dirty/musty" taste ---almond croissant: not fresh .. so it was soft instead of flaky ---blueberry bread: MOIST mm ---cheese scone: eHH skip NOTE: FREE soy for coffee at the counter .... CASH ONLY

Kateria N.

Yelp
I could have gone to crappy Starbucks for WiFi. Instead I chose a more intimate setting. Google search said WiFi and I'm told they normally do, but not today!! And you know what? That's ok that there's no WIFI. It happens but wouldn't you tell people by putting sign up on the A Frame outside? Nope. Not when you're thirsty for that schmoney you don't. The chai was delicious so there's that but it did come out of a container so there's that too. Sigh...

Don B.

Yelp
Small, friendly, neighborhood coffee bar, part of Joe's growing small chain in NYC. I go here because the espresso and cappuccino are the second best you'll find in Manhattan compared to to Roma or Firenze. My absolute proof is my native Italian friends who meet me there. They call the coffee "eccezionale" and "buonissimo." The very best Italian-like coffee?: Eately at 5th Avenue and 23rd Street but unlike this Joe's location, no outside seating area facing quiet brown-stoned Waverly Place just off Sixth Avenue.

Sarah B.

Yelp
I have been to a lot of coffee shops in the city, but this coffee roast is my favorite. Iced latte with vanilla syrup, which is homemade, it's definitely a summertime go to. But let's be honest I'll order it in the middle of a fucking blizzard. Pre-Covid this place was my go to for pre-work coffee, working on my laptop for an hour or two, or just meeting up with friends. During Covid each location is set up a little differently, so make sure you check it out before you go. Some have outdoor seating, and almost all of them are not allowing any seating inside. But they are still full service, and the staff are all very nice and wearing masks. The price seems standard across most cafes in the city, but the quality is where it's at.

Emma R.

Yelp
After searching the city for a coffee shop with one seat to get some work done, I found this lovely place. While its on the smaller size, I easily found a seat with some table space. The vanilla latte was amazing! The staff are super friendly! If I lived a bit closer, I'd make this my go-to place but its definitely worth the making a trip.

Zoe J.

Yelp
Probably my favorite coffee shop in this neighborhood. Intimate with still enough space to sit, very friendly staff, and the best pastries you will ever taste. Despite being an NYC chain, this location still feels local and cozy. And their espresso drinks are some of the best in the entire city. Great black iced tea too. I also love their almond dirty chai. It's 50 cents more for almond or soy milk in espresso drinks, but I love the fact that they have soy milk out at the self-service bar. Awesome! It's often more of a meet-up-and-chat place since there's no wifi, but there are still plenty of people working on laptops too. The pastries come from a variety of local places, and include the best whole wheat banana bread you will ever eat. So moist and delicious! They offer muffins, scones, croissants, biscotti, and cookies too (including a very good vegan chocolate chip cookie) Plus any place that sells Doughnut Plant is a friend of mine.

Lara G.

Yelp
I am a fan of their coffee. Simple branding, nice staff, well trained and always helpful.

Shannon G.

Yelp
Went to Joe last week for a pre-dinner caffeine boost and was thoroughly charmed. This coffee shop is adorable -- very West Village-esque. There's plenty of table space and the coffee is good and strong. Will be back!

Miriam W.

Yelp
Joe is a wonderful, cozy find and an easy walk from Washington Square Park. Though it's known for coffee, I had the chai and it was lovely. Despite the tiny space, folks are congenial. Baristas take their art seriously but manage to do so with a smile. Every neighborhood ought to be lucky enough to have a Joe - a small coffee shop where you can start your morning on the right foot.
