The Most Affordable Restaurants in Ann Arbor, Home of the University of Michigan

"The original Joe’s Pizza is a Greenwich Village landmark whose Brooklyn-style pizza is considered one of the best in New York City. Its South University location opened in late 2019 and is its first venture outside of the Big Apple. Diners on a budget can grab two slices of the legendary pizza for less than $10." - John Reyes

Such a gem in downtown Ann Arbor and UM campus. Love this place for the absolutely delicious pizzas and cozy hippie vibe. I usually get cheese, Zingerman’s fresh mozzarella or Caprese pizza. Never disappoints

Aria Savadkouei

Google
Definitely not the exact replica of the original Joe’s in the west village. Overall, it’s great pizza. And very similar to the original thing in most aspects. The dough in particular is great. BUT, the biggest difference, and this pizza’s weakest link, is the sauce. The sauce is overly sweet and lacks tang. Other than that, a reliably good slice of pizza. Pro tip: ask for slice to be “well-done”. Thank me later.

Google
A true NYC style pizza in Michigan! Brought back memories of pizza from Queens, NY. I should have asked for the pizza to be cooked a bit longer for crispier crust but otherwise it was excellent. I also tried a slice of the caprese and it was also delicious.

Google
Friendly staff. In the heart of the city. Short lines. Got and fresh pizza. I was able to try a few different types of pizza because you can buy this greatness by the slice. They have a few tables to sit at. Or you can sit on campus. I went on a beautiful day and took my pizza to the local park to eat. I will definately be bringing my friends back here to try out the pizza.

Google
Friendly workers? CHECK Great atmosphere? CHECK CHECK AMAZING PIZZA?!? CHECK CHECK CHECK!! Let me tell you when I say you won’t find a better slice of pizza in Michigan! The pictures on the wall are great to look at while you’re waiting for your order! And once you get that pizza, you gotta dig in right away because what’s not better when it’s fresh right? It’s a 40 minute drive for me and I’ll do it every time for a slice of pizza from here! 100%!!

SarahandChelsey

Google
The pizza was very good, and the atmosphere was like the atmosphere where you grab a slice in NYC or any other big cities. Mostly standing seating options, but very trendy. The container on the table that looks like parmesan is actually garlic! Don’t be confused!

Google
Great New York style pizza was a breath of fresh air in the land of terrible Detroit style pizza.

Google
Right in the heart of University of Michigan so great campus environment. Pizza is close to nyc but no cigar. Tomato sauce and cheese need more flavor. Thin and crispy, got that nyc flair. Is it worth the drive? I'd say no but if you're in the area then yeah go for it. Plus a pie is insanely expensive at $30, even in nyc I don't spend that much on a large pie.

Yelp
I came here a week ago with a bunch of my cousins to try Joes for the first time. Some of them had been but I never had. It's a pretty small restaurant, not much seating. I'm sure it would be nice in the summer to just go outside but honestly we still all fit since it wasn't too busy. We even had a stroller. I got the cheese pizza, just to be like Dave Portnoy, to start. It was amazing. Perfectly cooked, or warmed up I guess you could say. I also tried the Caprese and that was also delicious. My favorite part tho? The ranch. I would take that home and eat it -- it was so good! still craving this place!!! 10/10

Yelp
I came here after reading tons of great reviews and several people telling me to come, so I had high expectations. I stopped by around 1am and grabbed a couple slices with a girlfriend. The pizza was classic New York style and by the slice, it tasted pretty fresh, it was hot, fast, and definitely hit the spot for a late-night bite. It was very very busy too so be prepared to wait. That said, it wasn't really my style. The slice was gone in about a minute because it was so thin (and I know that's how NY style is) and while it wasn't bad by any means, it didn't blow me away either. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to get it during normal hours, but it's worth it if you're nearby and it's late!

Yelp
Caveat: At heart I'm a broke college student and I've never had a true NY slice in NY. I thought the pizzas were good. It felt light and crisp like a think crust pizza or a Chicago bar pizza. The dough was good as well, slight sour tang that I love in a good pizza dough. Service was quick and easy, ambiance felt like a take a slice and go or just stand and have a slice vibe. The only thing I'd take away might just have been the choice of the slice I had. The white pizza was very one dimensional. Just cheese. Didn't taste like a four cheese pizza or anything that would have some funky cheese to cut through the fattiness. I think having some blue cheese crumbles or having it with Mike's hot honey would have make it an 11/10 but because it didn't, it was like a 6.5-7/10. The caprese was fantastic, very fresh and the lovely tomato and red sauce really was special for me 9/10. However, as a guy that still has a broke college student mindset, I still can't get over paying $10+ on just two slices of pizza. That put it down to a 4/5 overall score.

Yelp
A great pizza option near U of M campus! This shop has single slices for sale but be aware there's a $5 minimum for cards, if you only plan on getting one slice bring cash. There's a few tables inside and public restrooms. The service was quick. I got 2 slices a classic cheese and the Zingerman's cheese only available in AA. The cheese was okay but the Zingerman's cheese was fantastic! It has a sweeter flavor to it that I've never had before on pizza, would recommend trying it. If you like NY style pizza this spot is for you.

Yelp
Ordered a whole pie (pepperoni, sausage, red onion) and a few slices while we waited. Everything tasted great. Not sure why, but the freshly heated slices ended up being so much more crunchy and tastier than the whole pie. They have shakers of pepper seeds, oregano, and garlic powder (warning... it looks like Parmesan). Service was very friendly and quick. Only a few tables and area along wall to eat. We went around 3pm so didn't have to worry about a lunch or dinner rush. We were able to grab a table and some of the extra seats along the wall to eat. It was on the pricey side... We had 4 premade slices (2 cheese, 2 pepperoni) and a full 3 topping pie and our bill was ~$55.

Yelp
Hotel recommended this place. Ordered 1 pepperoni pizza at 8:42 to be delivered to the hotel. The restaurant promises delivery of taking up to 30 minutes. I did not get the slightly warm pizza until 10:05. My problem: they delivered a pizza to the hotel after our pizza was due; never called to provide an update; and had to cal 4 times and also texted- before we finally got it. I do not recommend

Yelp
I almost fell out of my chair when I saw Joe's of NYC has an Ann Arbor location. Sometimes these 'franchises' work out like Regina's of Boston. So I gave it a try and it was excellent. The pizza isn't quite the same as Joe's in Greenwich but really really close. The delivery and online ordering were much easier to use than going to NYC. If you're a fan of NYC style pizza this a must try.
google avatar

Yelp
Not a bad thing to say about the Joe's in Ann Arbor. I have been far too many times to count. The pizza is very good. I would say similar to even as good as New York, and I'm from New York. I usually just get the plain cheese slice but I've had the white slice, margarita, and pepperoni. All are delicious. I've also tried the ranch they serve here, they partner with zingermans for it, also very good. Everyone working here is very quick and very nice. The store itself is well-done and honestly there is a good amount of space. Love joes!! Will continue to go back here all the time and in the city!!
google avatar

Yelp
Really tasty pizza that's perfect for a night of reconnecting at a local hotel lobby- which is exactly what we did! The pepperoni tastes great: enjoy meat, cheese and sauces! And it looked like everyone in our party loved the taste.

Yelp
Visiting from out of town and needed a place that was open late. This place did not disappoint! Pizza was fantastic! Don't like the thick Chicago style and this was thin but still had a substantial weight it didn't " flop". Sauce was also great, not too spicy and not too sweet. Employees were also great with how busy they were. Would definitely eat here again! We ended up with a half cheese/ half pep since I have a picky 16 year old but can't wait to go back to try a more loaded pie. The only downside is getting to it, parking can be a little hard so expect a walk, but it's worth it

Yelp
Joe's Pizza offers some great, classic no-frills NY style pizza in Ann Arbor! We ordered a mushroom pie and a pepperoni pie via phone, and the order was ready in 20 minutes for pickup. The taste and crust texture was like how I remember from growing up in NJ. The pizza is a bit pricy, but the pies are quite big and delicious, which help compensate for the high prices for sure.

Yelp
This review is specifically for delivery from Joe's. Their pizza is good, their delivery is not. Up until about a year ago, ordering directly from their website got you a hot pizza delivered right to your door in about 25-30 minutes. Something changed in the last year (maybe rising popularity without adjusting staff accordingly). Now you get cold pizza delivered right to your door in about 75 minutes. The online system still has the old times. They have overshot these times consistently by 45 minutes for us. Friends have complained about the same issues. I'd like the old Joe's back, if possible. Until then we're done ordering from there.

Yelp
Visiting here this weekend and got a gluten free pizza from here. Pizza was ready quick & was super tasty!! i can see why this place so popular here. staff was friendly & the place was popping

Yelp
Great slice of pizza from Joe's. Felt like I was in NY. I love a good slice spot and this place did not disappoint.

Yelp
This place was absolutely packed on a Saturday night at midnight with the temp subzero, with good reason. This is a no frills, Authentic Ny pizza parlor where the old Baskin Robbins was for all of us South Quadders in the 90s. It's a hole in the wall with very little seating, but the pizza is bomb. The wall on the right highlights all of the famous actors who frequent this place. Simple, real pizza with the perfect ratio of crust to sauce and cheese. I got cheese, my crew got pepperoni and margarita as well. I will return to get some more veg options.

Yelp
This place was sooo good! Honestly, I had never heard for Joe's or knew about this place but my husband had it on his food bucket list and it was so worth the drive. Well actually, I had heard of it and did not know it, I guess it was featured in Spiderman 2 which I have seen several times but did not know this was the place until I finished my meal and asked/ saw the pictures on the wall. This is a fun "hole-in-the-wall" experience with a few tables and large pies on display to order. We tried quite a few. The service was good and I love that they allow you to custom order, so we got a couple white with spinach, the mozzarella with tomato and one with sausage. A fresh mozzarella, and pepperoni and a cheese. It was all good, I love the large New York thin slices. The kids both loved it, and the one child who doesn't like pizza as much loved and would totally go back, so it must be good. We had so much fun eating and taking pictures. I will definitely be back. My goal would be to order a couple whole pizzas to take home to warm and try the Zingerman's ranch, that looks so good. I did not think to try it at the time, but I did like the garlic, red pepper flakes, and oregano at the tables. I combined all of them to dip the crust, so good! What a fun experience. While I have been to New York a couple times, I do not remember getting any pizza to compare this location but I enjoyed it.

Yelp
Ordered via UberEats... it appeared to be an outstanding pie. The crust was sufficiently thin and I was looking forward to a nice crispy crunch. Unfortunately, the crust was very burned and soggy.... Just horrible. The topping and their red sauce seemed to taste very good. The crust ruined what may have been good eats. My next time through, I'll give them another try. Based on this experience, I do not recommend.

Yelp
Good pizza, would buy again and again. The sauce is a little sweeter than usual and the dough comes out chewy and crusty which are both great things. Check it out you probably won't be let down.
google avatar

Father_Guido_Sarducci ..

Yelp
Joe's is good because the pizza is actually cooked long enough so the dough has dark color and flavor. Most other pizzerias under-cook their pie & has no body or flavor. Thank you Joe for the best pie around......Ayyyy FuggetAboutIt!

Yelp
This is the best pizza in Ann Arbor, the best pizza in the state of Michigan. Light cheese, light sauce, crispy crust. It's the perfect pizza.
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place since I saw Dave Portnoy review it a couple of years ago. I was passing through Ann Arbor today and made a beeline for Joe's. This is the closest of any place I've been to in the Midwest of capturing the NYC or Long Island pizzeria. They have about eight pies under glass for slices and you can obviously order a full pie as well. They automatically put the slices back in the oven even if it's still hot in order to further crisp it up...absolutely perfect! Had both the cheese and the fresh mozzarella slice...surprisingly, I liked the regular cheese better. Perhaps some basil would've added to the fresh mozzarella slice? Either way, both were great with a perfect crust. I'll be back and you should go as well!

Yelp
I LOVE THIS PLACE! The pizzas are all so delicious and warm. You can never go wrong with any of their flavors. The service is quick and the prices are cheap. They close pretty late so it's perfect for a late night snack after going out at night. This place can get really busy and get a little messy but overall it's my favorite go-to for pizza in Ann Arbor!

Yelp
With authentic, old school Italian recipes - you can't go wrong. My brother recently had surgery and a hospital stay in Ann Arbor. We ordered Joe's pizza for his amazing and caring team. When the pizza was delivered, one of the nurses exclaimed, "it's from Joe's - that's the gooood pizza!" And so it was with both shifts consuming all the pies. Great service and superb quality!

Jerry O.

Yelp
Simple, straightforward pizza joint. My granddaughter said it was the best slice of pizza she had ever tasted.
google avatar

Yelp
Cant really go wrong with getting Joe's pizza! Pizza is of course delicious and isn't heavy yet filling. Also not too greasy. It's just a nice place to grab a quick bite. Even when they're busy, they're quick to get through the line so you're not waiting too long. Not a lot of seats to sit down and eat, but everyone eats pretty quickly so spots open up. They also have plenty of spots to stand and eat your pizza if you're not wanting to take up a whole table.

Arthur

Yelp
excellent NY-style pizza. A bit too pricy in my opinion. Wish they'd cut it into 12 pieces like I ordered it.
google avatar

Tamara F.

Yelp
Best NY style pizza! Thin crispy, great sauce and fresh toppings. The only downfall is the location very difficult to pick up pizza due to the available parking situation..
google avatar

Suzy J.

Yelp
My sister raved to us about this pizza, so I had to try it. I absolutely love italian style pizza because it always taste amazing. You can always tell how fresh the ingredients are when eating it. My husband and I ordered a pie. The prices were $4 more from photos we saw on google, but that wasn't a huge issue. They had a lot of drink options, even some diet sugar free snapple for me. They have seating inside and outside. We waited about ten minutes. The pizza was super hot and came with 8 giant slices. The sauce was sweet, and absolutely delicious. It was the perfect amount. The cheese was really good too. Everything tasted so fresh. This is honestly the best pizza I have ever had. The crust was amazing too. If I lived in this area, this would be my go to spot for sure.

Yelp
I wanted pizza and knew this university town would not disappoint. They have pies made up and you choose your slice, which they toss in the pizza oven to reheat, perfectly. So perfect that I started to eat when I realized that I should take a picture! I didn't pay for a slice with a bite out of it! Simple but fresh ingredients, thin crust with good chew to it and doesn't droop even with larger slices. Nice sauce, definitely hit the spot. Nice jams playing while I sat at counter along the wall. Spots outside to sit or standing tables. It rained so outside was empty but plenty of people in and out of open doors to keep temp cool/ comfortable. Service was personable and quick. $8 and change for 2 slices, had about 7 varieties this time; vegetarian options I'm sure. Vegan? Didn't see any signs but I also was looking. So glad I stopped by and will be back again!
google avatar

Nathan S.

Yelp
Have to say we absolutely loved it! Thin, crispy, lite, sweet, maybe could have had a little more cheese... but honestly, super great pizza! The counter guy was super nice when my kid dropped his amazingly large slice and was gracious enough to give him a new one. Thank you : ) Just wanted to put it out there that this was a great slice of pizza, actually as weird as it sounds... it was a pleasure to eat! Enjoy!

Yelp
I really like Joes pizza, can be a quick fix for lunch. Very quick to grab, and nice to sit and eat.
google avatar

Yelp
This NY-style pizza rocks! Thin crust you can fold, killer tomato sauce, and cheesy goodness. Totally lives up to the hype - a solid 5/5. One of my favorite spots in Ann Arbor!
google avatar

Sherry W.

Yelp
I've been dreaming about this pizza!! Ever since I found out they opened a location outside of NY and it happened to be in Ann Arbor, Michigan, I could not wait to try it. This place was busy and packed with students and people on lunch breaks. I ordered ahead on their website since I wanted a whole pizza and didn't want to wait there while they make it. The pizza was absolutely perfect! Each bite was better than the next. The cheese to sauce ratio was perfect and my 5 year old foodie nephew even said that it was the best pizza he has ever had! I didn't care too much for the ronisticks but my husband and nephew liked it.
google avatar

Sydney R.

Yelp
Good pizza, huge portions, great price! Did delivery from their website and it was quick and easy.
google avatar

Nick R.

Yelp
I have tried to go here the last couple times visiting Ann Arbor but parking can be a challenge if you don't know your way around. Finally went to the parking garage near by and walked and glad I did. The pizza was pretty good and the price was in line with what I would expect. The next time I will order an entire pizza to guarantee I get something fresh to judge. The restaurant is small so if it's a busy time seating might be hard.
google avatar

Joyce L.

Yelp
This pizza place is my favorite. It is on South U and opens late so worth getting anytime. I love thin crust and they have a nice burnt taste. This is connected with famous Joe's Pizza in NYC. I want to the backstory is the owner of NY place's nephew decide to go to UofM so pizza store moved here as well. It is under a high rise so they are really lucky. I have to do a little bit of walking but worth it! I would recommend getting a box and trying different slices. I really enjoy the og cheese, pep, or BASIL moz. Price is reasonable and once you get you will be hooked. I get cravings after eating at Joes. They portions are big but I can finish like 2 slices! I highly recommend :)

SD S.

Yelp
Awesome pizza! Classic NY style slices. Great atmosphere and cool pics of celebrity customers throughout the years. A must visit when in this college town!
google avatar

Emma T.

Yelp
This was the perfect place for a quick post marathon meal. After finishing the race, I was craving pizza and wanted it quick. Joes's serves up NYC pizza by the slice. Typical process of choose your slice and it's warmed to order. This resulted in a slice cooked with a perfectly crisp bottom crust, but not too hard or crunchy. The prices are reasonable and a variety bottled drinks (Diet Coke for me) are available to grab from the large refrigerator. The indoor seating area is small, but there is a counter around the perimeter of the room that optimizes the space. Outdoor tables are also available. Extra note: they do have a public restroom which is good.

Scott S.

Yelp
It was definitely a pleasure when a true New York style pizza place opened up right on campus. I'm a huge fan of Joe's especially when you just wanna run in and grab a quick slice! (A).
google avatar

Brad B.

Yelp
Absolutely awesome! Best pizza in Michigan 100%! Cannot wait to get back here!! Thank you so much!! Keep up the great work!!

Josh F.

Yelp
I don't get the hype. Normally I'm not harsh in my reviews but since it isn't a local business I'll be honest. The pizza is fine. It's a very basic New York slice but honestly I'd rather dominos. There just isn't a lot going on unless you get toppings which are way overpriced. You will always wait for you food and there is no seating. Still looking for a great reasonably priced Ann Arbor Slice. I'll only eat it if it's free which if you're a umich student will happen often at different events.

Yelp
If you've followed my reviews over the last few months you know that every week my husband and I celebrate "Pizza Thursday" (a hold over from pre-covid times when my husband would grab a pizza on his way home from a night class he was taking). Every so often we mix it up by trying some place new in town, and last week it was Joe's Pizza. Confession--NY style pizza isn't my favorite but Joe's Pizza may make me a believer. First off, as far as I can tell there is only one size of pie here. And that size is "HUGE." It's so big that (as you can tell by my photo) that it didn't fit in the box. When I opened it and saw the bent crust I immediately began to curse our delivery person for messing it up. But then it became clear. The pizza was fine, it was just too damn big for its own good! More of it to love. The slices are massive but so so good. We got a pepperoni and mushroom and it was excellent. Super cheesy, good pep, fresh mushrooms. I was into it! You can upgrade your cheese and get fresh Zingerman's mozzarella but we stuck with the traditional stuff and it was delicious. It's baked in a wood fired oven so some of it gets a nice char as well. We also ordered the cheese garlic bread and OMG. So cheesy and good. Check the cheese pull in my photo if you don't believe me. Woodfired in the oven too. We did lose one of the sticks to a bit of char but it was worth it for the rest of them to have that delicious flavor. The only bummer is that this pie is not cheap (one size only so you can't scale down to save money) so it won't be in our regular rotation but I could see us doing carryout slices in the future to save $$. Looking forward to it!

Mephisto G.

Yelp
The food is a decent version of NY pizza. I'm from Jersey and we challenge NYC on pizza. This is not a real restaurant : it is like a pickup ghost kitchen with paper plates and no where to sit. Or reasonably park. Do you want to park a few blocks away on a parking ramp and then walk to Joe's for takeout? I second the reviewer who recommended the (run down) NYPD that has a wide menu and casual seating. Avoid NYPD bathrooms.
google avatar

Frenchy F.

Yelp
The best NY pie available outside of Manhattan.. this is joe pizza in Ann Arbor ! Keep up the good work guys !
google avatar

Raymond T.

Yelp
Quality: 4.7/5 Hospitality: 2/5 Value: 3/5 You can't leave Ann Arbor without trying Joe's Pizza. It's pricey but I think its worth it for the experience. It becomes busy late at night, but it's not worth waiting 20 minutes for a slice of pizza.
google avatar

Kevin C.

Yelp
Advertised as NYC pizza - it definitely is reminiscent of pizza back home but definitely not worth the price of $3.50 for a regular slice. Best part of the pizza was the dough and crust but the sauce and cheese were just okay. I can see why college students come here for pizza but as a native New Yorker, $3.50 is too much for a basic slice of NY pizza. For what it is though, it's a decent pizza.
google avatar

Yelp
Best pizza we've had in Ann Arbor so far! To caveat, Mani is tasty but it's a pretty penny. So I wouldn't necessarily try to compare Joe's and Mani apples to apples. Our favorite pizza in Michigan is probably still Tivoli's Wood Brick-Oven Pizzeria in Utica, MI but in a pinch, Joe's Pizza is more than satisfactory. I didn't realize that whole pie = 18" when I called ahead to order it, but I'm not complaining! The students working there were really friendly & helpful. I asked if they liked the Sicilian & one of the workers said it's thick but still really light. Once I tried it, I totally got what he meant. A whole pie with two toppings, 1 Sicilian slice & 1 white slice ran me $35. The pizza itself was just perfect. Not too much sauce. Not too much cheese. Not too greasy. Goldilocks me is very pleased. If I had to nitpick, I'd love more pizza bubbles. Otherwise, we'll definitely be back for whole pie to-go orders!

Yelp
Dirty mess. All the more a shame because the pizza is ok. No pride. Failed management. Better to go to Joes in Brooklyn or Manhattan where the operation runs right.
google avatar

Travis M.

Yelp
Having grown up in NYC, I believe I am a pizza expert :). That being said, the pizza from Joe's, which is said to be NY style, was very good! It was not better than some of the best in NYC, but it was comparable to La Famiglia but not Pizza Suprema. In any case, it is the best pizza I have had in Ann Arbor so definitely worth a visit or order... The pizza is more doughy than crispy, but the crust was very good and you can tell they use quality cheese and sauce....
