The 15 Best Kid-Friendly Restaurants in LA

"Let's face it, Malibu beach days are a marathon. But Malibu beach days with toddlers? That’s like signing up for a Tough Mudder. So be sure to stop off at John’s Garden for a breather. The tiny sandwich shop inside the Malibu Country Mart might not serve our absolute favorite sandwiches in the neighborhood, but it does have prime real estate adjacent to the shopping mall’s massive outdoor playground. Now you can enjoy your sandwich in peace while your child swings and runs with 3-year-olds who have already been accepted to Harvard-Westlake." - brant cox

Where To Eat When You Just Want A Sandwich

"It’s easy to assume the Pier is the center of all things Malibu, but one trip over to the Country Mart will prove you wrong. The upscale outdoor mall is a scene cut right from a Kate Hudson lifestyle blog, but once you navigate through a seemingly endless row of L’Occitanes, you’ll find John’s Garden. The 40-year-old sandwich shop/window is a Malibu classic, serving simple and excellent sandwiches at decent prices ($8-12 a sandwich). Lines get long during peak weekend hours, but if you’re looking for some post-hike nourishment, John’s is where you go." - brant cox

"COVID-19 Update: Open for takeout and delivery. John's Garden has occupied the same spot in the Malibu Country Mart since long before it was known as the Malibu Country Mart. It's changed a few hands in its 40 years of business, but the sandwich menu has kept to the same standards of freshness and goodness the whole time. Every regular has their favorite, and ours is the Surfer Princess—a perfect turkey-on-wheat piled high with sprouts, avocado salad, and Vegenaise. It pairs well with the coconut-macadamia-chocolate-chip cookie. You can grab a seat by the swings so the kids can play through lunch. John's Garden - Review - Malibu - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Deep inside the very strange Malibu Country Mart “lifestyle mall” sits this low-key, order-at-the-counter sandwich shop. John’s has been making no-frills deli sandwiches at reasonable prices (for Malibu) for a while now, and though it’s built quite a following, you never have to wait too long to get your food. This is the best quick lunch spot along the Malibu coast." - Brant Cox

Google
I understand the concept and I really liked the store but the sandwiches were not worth it! 80%of the sandwiches are greens the bread is dry and overall very low quality sandwiches

Had a great Sunday in Malibu, at the beach, walking around and ended up getting lunch from John's Garden. I ordered the BU-BERRY protein smoothie and a chicken avocado wrap with side salad, and could not be more pleased with the food and customer service. Everyone working there was very welcoming and friend.

Lisa DeVuyst

Google
BLTA- $18. But the toast was so hard you could hardly bite it. Definitely not soft sourdough. Overcooked crispy bacon. Huge wedge of lettuce. Not recommended to order again. Especially for the high price tag! Avocado wrap- $18 Better option. Spinach tortilla was good. Avocado, Feta, and cucumbers had a Greek flavor to them. Chicken was a little bland, but acceptable with the other flavors. Still over priced, maybe $12-15 is more appropriate. Both sandwiches came with a side salad with balsamic dressing. A little too salty, but otherwise yummy and a nice side. Overall, for the price, I'm not sure if it was worth it. Maybe it's a location thing and the price reflects that. If so, stick to the wrap, not the BLTA. Nice quiet outdoor picnic tables.

Google
Great healthy/easy option when you’re on the go! My fiancé and I were in the nearby area looking for something vegetarian friendly, and came across John’s Garden. We got the Berry Smoothie, a press sandwich, and the Mediterranean. Better than what we had expected! Looking for healthy options that are not your standard chain restaurant is tough, and this was one of the Greats for sure!

Mayur Patel

Google
They have great options for all sorts of diets, including good vegetarian options! I tried the caprese with pesto and it was delicious and hit the spot. The sandwich came with a small salad as well and the dressing was great. There are plenty of options for drinks and snacks as well. I will be back to try some of the other sandwiches here.

Debbie Fogel

Google
Bu-berry smoothie amazing. I'd skip the sandwich next time cuz it wasn't to my liking, although looked amazing! Takeout or dine at outdoor benches.

Courtney

Google
I used to go here on lunch breaks when I went to Pepperdine several years ago and I can report it’s still just as good. I’ve only ever gotten their sandwiches but that’s fine because every one I’ve ever tried is great. The staff are friendly and you can typically count on getting your food fast which is great considering you’re in Malibu with a bunch of tourists

Ashley Scobey

Google
A Malibu icon that rarely disappoints. We love that they have so many veggie options. The Chinese salad is delish. It’s definitely expensive for a sandwich shop, but that’s Malibu for you.

Yelp
Great little sandwich shop in the beachy ritzy mall. Lots of covered seating by the grass and playground. I've been here a few times. I liked the Italian Salad. Romaine with little cuts of salami and dressing on the side. The olives were fresh and salty. Italian sandwich was good too. Detecting a theme? Nice bread, meat, and dressing. Packs well to go. We also tried a tuna melt. Looked like an ordinary panini my neighbor makes with his George Foreman grill. Bread was nicely toasted and charred, tuna well dressed. Simple, and satisfying. Since we were in Malibu, I thought I had to get an overpriced kale smoothie. Tasted fresh, if not too yum. But I tell ya, it sure worked as advertised.

Yelp
The food was amazingly delicious and so tasty and the service great the staff is amazing last thing ambiance was nice

Yelp
Amazing food! Always so fresh! I have been coming here for years and they never disappoint. They also have an awesome selection of drinks, chips and very carefully selected snacks. You can tell they love what they are doing.
google avatar

Yelp
OMG!!!! I want to thank you for the delicious food and amazing service! This is the first time when my son asked me to share my food with him and finished my sandwich and salad before I was able to blink. Yes, salad, I know you will say it's not possible but it is. Usually I'm chasing him with a spoon and asking him to take a bite, but not today. Everything looked and tasted so delicious! I ordered a Prosciutto Caprese sandwich with House salad and a cup of Veggie soup. Simple but so flavorful meal! I don't live in Malibu but I definitely recommend this restaurant. I will come back again!

Yelp
Unfortunately not much has changed, the kitchen employees and food expediter still have a attitude and are not very friendly or accommodating .

Lana T.

Yelp
If you're also a cutesy girly thinking about getting the Green Goddess smoothie, PLEASE DON'T. I've never tasted a more bland smoothie in my life. You'd think it would taste okay with the pineapple to balance the greens out.. but no. No hint of sweetness at all- just underwhelming green mush. Tastes like if you blended napkins and water with some grass Girl save the $10 for somewhere else please do yourself a favor.

Yelp
This place is one of my favorite places to stop by when I come to Malibu, the food is always great I always get the chicken avocado wrap always been on point and I get the Guadalajara smoothies for my kids and they love it happy kids happy dad

Lee G.

Yelp
TERRIBLE customer service, expensive food. We waited 30 mins for an $18 sandwich that the kitchen got wrong. We were told it would be an ADDITIONAL 20 mins for a correct one. When we asked for a refund the manager was incredibly rude and told us to "go to McDonald's" if we wanted "fast food". Wow. A woman in front of us was returning her food because the chicken was undercooked and they made HER feel bad too! Used to love this place. Sadly, never going back.
google avatar

Brian T.

Yelp
Food was inedible, with the chicken in the chinese chicken salad cut improperly so that every bite was full of skin, fat, and gristle. Lemonade desperately needed more sugar. My wife's turkey wrap was slimy and gross. $50 down the drain and we threw out everything after a few bites. Even worse, the guys working the pickup counter (I think these are the same guys cooking the food) are incredibly rude and hostile, one tall guy in particular. One star is way too kind for the place, but yelp doesn't let you leave zero stars. This place is a huge zero, primarily because of employees who very obviously do not want to be there and have decided to take out their personal misery on the customers, while serving up disgusting, ill-prepared food. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

Yelp
John's Garden in Malibu is a must-visit place! I stop by here every time I'm in the area. Welcomed by warm and friendly staff, I have the option to choose from a variety of salads, sandwiches, and soups. Everything is so fresh, and all sandwiches can be made with gluten-free bread. I placed my order with Alan, his positive attitude was very refreshing. I had the European salad with a scoop of tuna for extra protein, seasoned with freshly squeezed lemon and olive oil. Additionally, I enjoyed a cup of veggie soup to warm me up from the chilly ocean breeze. I savored my lunch in the beautiful garden in front of the restaurant in the company of my friends . I hope you enjoy your visit as much as I do!

Yelp
Cute setup in Malibu Country Mart. They have picnic tables outside to enjoy your meal. I got the Pilgrim sandwich. The flavors were great, but the bread was just average. Menu said sourdough, but it seemed more like regular white bread. Took about 5 min for my sandwich to be ready which wasn't much of a wait, but there weren't many other people there when I was.
google avatar

Adam C.

Yelp
Average sandwich for a Malibu price. Had the chicken pesto sandwich on ciabatta. Ciabatta was the highlight, the rest of the fillings were extremely average. Maybe below $10 but not $18.
google avatar

Yelp
I was in the area and want to grab a quick bite before heading out. This place looked like a great quick serve place. The menu was on the door as you walk up to the place. I ordered a chicken bowl where there was brown rice and greens with avocado and cherry tomatoes. I placed my order inside. The window to pick up was outside. It took a while but I was fine since it was fresh. The dressing was light and it seemed mainly in the greens. The chicken had good flavor & the avocado was the best. The brown rice was dry and no flavor. I seem to struggle eating it but I made myself finish it later since it was expensive. Service was good but the bowl was okay. I wouldn't go out of my way to ordering it again.
google avatar

Kristen H.

Yelp
The space is cute and the cashier was friendly but thats where the positives end. The cashier pointed me to the pick up window for water and the tall guy behind the counter was incredibly rude, I couldn't believe it. Move the water dispenser where customers can help themselves if its such a massive inconvenience. Our food was the worst part - almost $60 for a salad, sandwich, lemonade and a granola bar. My husband threw out his salad after spitting out his first few bites and my wrap tasted like cafeteria food, it was slimy and gross and also went in the bin. I ate my prepackaged granola bar and my husband went across the way to Broad Street Oyster.

Yelp
I love taking food to the beach and this is one of the few quick spots in this area of Malibu that makes it easy. John's is located in the Malibu Country Mart- a cute, higher-end shopping and dining center. Portions are small and items are pricey ($16 for a little veggie sandwich). The sandwich tasted fresh, but there really wasn't anything spectacular about it. Sort of felt I could make the same thing at home. The staff member was nice- nothing too memorable. If you're in the area and looking for something light and healthy, this is a great spot.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice clean sandwich deli in Malibu. Unfortunately the sandwiches aren't served with pickles.
google avatar

Scott J.

Yelp
This adorable sandwich shop/micro bodega was the perfect spot for a quick take-out lunch today. The line and wait time were minimal, and the customer service great. In addition to sandwiches, they've also got soup, bowls, and wraps. The micro bodega has a good offering of healthy and carby snacks, as well as a cold case full of tons of beverages. I got the Malibu Tuna Sandwich, which I loved. Delicious tuna salad served with tons of avocado and lettuce on sliced whole wheat bread and a petit side salad. Additionally, I got the vegetable soup which was also delicious. This is a charming little spot in the Malibu Lumberyard, will definitely be back when I'm in the area.

Yelp
Been coming here for almost 20 years and have witnessed it's growth, setbacks and ultimate rebound after the pandemic. This past time ordered the Farm sandwich with egg salad added. Yes, you can do that. Everything about it was fresh, filling and oh so tasty. Crunchy vegetables, creamy egg salad and wonderful bread. And I truly appreciate that they do not over salt their foods leaving it up the guest to add salt or pepper. I will always be a fan and continue to make special trips from Glendale to enjoy these fresh, made to order sandwiches.
google avatar

Miranda M.

Yelp
Horrible service. The guy with the mustache and hat at the order pickup window was really mean when I asked if the drink I ordered was large. He "said EXCUSE ME" it's what you ordered! A LARGE." He also laughed and mocked my boyfriend for not knowing where the pickup for the falafel was. All the guys who work here just had really bad vibes Drink tastes horrible ($9.50) No flavor at all watery Would not recommend

Yelp
one of the best caprese sandwiches i've ever had!! SO GOOD. it took only a few minutes to come out and the staff was extremely kind!
google avatar

Manon C.

Yelp
I come here on the reg before my very long work days just down the way and they never disappoint! The tuna sandwich with bean sprouts is so good but my new favorite order is the prosciutto caprese sandwich with Parmesan instead of mozzarella . Sometimes mozzarella can be too heavy but this style is just right and so damn yummy, I might go broke because of this place haha!
google avatar

Lia N.

Yelp
simple and good sandwich shop. 1-easy counter order and pick up 2-owner at the counter was friendly and quick. Also made me smile :) thumbs up 3-cute outdoor seating area next to the park at Malibu village 4-prices are reasonable 5-tasty and healthy option bowls, sandwiches, wraps and easy lunch items. 6-multiple drink options at their refrigerator and quick grab and go bars and snacks 7-next to kids playground makes it easy for families. It's a great spot for a quick meal at the village.

Alex M.

Yelp
I love this place! I used to come here as a kid and get the portofino sandwich which was really good. My new favorite is the garden burger! The people are always very nice and there are great vibes.
google avatar

Kay J.

Yelp
Got the Tuna melt for $13, which comes with slices of tomatoes, red onion, mayo, tuna, and cheese of course, along with a side salad that consists of a few spring leaves and a vinaigrette. The tuna sandwich is delicious but it is small, light, and definitely pricey. I get it though, they have to pay rent in Malibu LOL so it is justified, it's also very delicious! Was in the area again and wanted something super light so got the Quinoa Queen salad with a lemon vinaigrette for $14, again, it's super overpriced but it's healthy and very light. You have to go inside the little store, which has a convenient store/gas station feel to it, and order there. They have lots of goodies, drinks, and chips. Once you order and pay, they give u a number and then u go pick up ur food at the counter when it's ready! You have to find your own seats outside. Mostly benches, and the wait can be a pain in the you know what, especially on weekends so make sure you keep a lookout for seating way before ordering the food. The food does take a long time to get ready too, no matter how small your order is. It's a really nice, relaxing, outdoor seating with other stores and restaurants near by, and a view of a busy playground. It can be noisy and super sunny at times but there are shaded areas and all tables have umbrellas. It's a nice atmosphere and it's nice to bring your kids here too because it's enjoyable for them too! I haven't tried other items on the menu because we love the tuna melt and always go for that one. But if you want to see other options, I posted a photo of the menu as well!

Liza L.

Yelp
Be aware of bugs in your food. Went back and talked to the manager and he spoke to me so rudely and said to me "there nothing that I'm going to do about this, it's not a bug it is just a ladybug" This makes me sad because I live so close to here and come here all the time. Wont be going to johns garden again. It's not about the bug at this point, it's the customer service that sucks.
google avatar

Justin B.

Yelp
Bomb spot for healthy sandwiches, wraps and salads if you're near Malibu. Definitely worth the stop.

Georgia K.

Yelp
My favorite salad place on PCH! Coming here every weekend after my usual Sunday hike and they never disappoint. The salads are big and always prepared with fresh ingredients. I really enjoy the variety of vegetarian options that they offer.
google avatar

Emily A.

Yelp
We order almost all our birthday party catering here it's amaizng! Everyone is so happy, and we get them individually packaged. It's just the best food. Additionally, it's just one of my favorite restaurants to get takeout from. I wish they were open a little later because I actually like to order them for dinner more than lunch, but their sandwiches are incredible. Their chip options are just absolutely out of this world. They leave nothing to be desired w the snack wall! Also on the occasion that I have gotten their smoothies, I'm very impressed. I typically get mine at Sunlife but there's are very very good. Not to mention the staff are just so sweet there. Whenever we order for the party, they are so sweet and accommodating and they are always very patient when we are there ordering because my children, of course change their minds 100 times lol I don't even know what we would do without this place in Malibu. My son's favorite is a Surfrider princess I love all the vegan burgers and the vegan delight, and everyone's favorite sandwich for the party is the Portofino!
google avatar

Yosef S.

Yelp
If you're looking for something healthy to eat in the Malibu area, this is the place to go. They have a variety of salads, sandwiches, wraps and paninis. The few times that I've gone here, the food tasted great and fresh. Its also a little mart so they have a variety of drinks and snacks too. The service is good, and they have outdoor seating too. The salads are big portions, as well as the sandwiches. And if you're lucky, you might sight a celebrity!
google avatar

Kathrine S.

Yelp
Order the food chicken and salad and avocado wrap. Was waiting for the order very long time , so finally they called my order number but only wrap was ready. I asked when the rest will be ready and was told that its coming. Continued to wait and after 15 minutes asked again when my order will be ready and in a rude way was told that they have no clue when it will be ready. After additional 15 minutes it was finally ready. ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS customer service. So if you like to be treated with no respect thats your place to go.
google avatar

Melissa C.

Yelp
Love this spot! The sandwiches are absolutely delicious and great portions. I usually get the veggie and add turkey. Everything is super fresh. There's a huge wall of refrigerated drinks! Lots of little snacks as well. My favorite little deli stop before a beach day.
google avatar

Kena C.

Yelp
Why just a 2 stars? Ordered the mushroom burger. Loved the patty flavor and it came with a side salad. Good. The bad? 1) burgers should not be cut 2) the bread. Yucky cold tall dense boring bread. Thee worst bread. A brioche would have compliment it or warming up the buns would have gone a long way to making them edible. I ended up duping the burger insides atop the salad and eating it like this.
google avatar

Bailey A.

Yelp
A nice spot for a quick salad to go! They have lots of options to choose from. Can get a little busy though on weekends :)

Daniel G.

Yelp
Was very disappointed with my meal. Payed 20 dollars for a sandwich thinking that I would get at least a half decent sandwich. I ended getting a very bland sandwich with no sauce. The pesto was not pesto, it was tasteless. They could really invest in a rice cooker because my friends' bowl had microwaved rice. Would not come back.
google avatar

Kevin W.

Yelp
Yeah so Malibu Country Mart is great, most of us know that. But you don't have great casual options now that Malibu Country Kitchen closed. Sit down places galore. But if you want a sando pronto and an insane collection of drinks and chips...look no more. Hidden gem. And, pro tip? Order your sammies online. Seem to come out faster.

Luke W.

Yelp
Great Food, Great Service! Love the location and the food was very yummy. Would recommen!
google avatar

Sean D.

Yelp
This is one of those places you don't want to avoid when in the country mart! Food is delicious. Anything pretty much you order is going to be that good. I've been here more times than I can count and have never had a bad meal. Food is fresh and tasty. Try anything and you'll enjoy it.

Juliet H.

Yelp
Love the food here great customer service! Chocolate shakes are the best got to try the cookies but make sure you catch them on time!!! my favorite is the macadamia cookie
google avatar

Hannah M.

Yelp
One of my top favorite locations to go for brunch/lunch. Everything is made fresh salads are so delicious sandwiches are also super fresh and amazing I love how you also have scenery. My all-time favorite is the Malibu tuna sandwich on a baguette. Even the little side salad they give you is super good. Also the love me juice is really good.
google avatar

Valrii U.

Yelp
Wow! Customer service was stellar! Simple Menu with plenty of healthy and vegetarian options! All outdoor seating and energized family feel to this environment. Will definitely go again.
google avatar

Pardees F.

Yelp
Came to John's Garden before heading to the beach for the day and was looking for a good sized meal to have for some fuel for the beach! Definitely got that with the size of my sandwich. I ordered the parma prosciutto sandwich and it was excellent! They give so much prosciutto, and for the reasonable price of $13, it was definitely high quality meat. I took the other half to go because it was huge! The salad it came with was really fresh too! Will definitely try the veggie burger the next time I go back because my friend had it and it looked amazing! It's a very casual cafe located in the country mart and there's plenty of seating outside. Parking in the lot can be a trek on the weekends but definitely worth it!

Alex D.

Yelp
I just had the turkey sandwich and it was terrible! I don't normally write reviews but I was very disappointed and felt taken. What a waste of $15. The menus says it's on sourdough bread but mine was served on white Wonder Bread. The turkey meat looked like something you get out of a package at the super market- Low quality. A tasteless sandwich. Save your money.
google avatar

Jaana S.

Yelp
This review is ONLY for the mudslide smoothie. It's so good!
google avatar

Jackie O.

Yelp
This place was ridiculous. An off-time on a Friday afternoon and yet it took 20 minutes for my husband to get a turkey and cheese sandwich. Yes, 20 minutes. What was supposed to be a quick lunch turned into a situation in which we could have just sat down somewhere with waiter service instead. And about $20 for a sandwich, chips, and a soda. Nothing special about the sandwich either. So quite laughable in my opinion. They do have plenty of healthy snacks/ drinks available which is a bonus. But not worth the pain of waiting. If you go, do not order a sandwich or anything that requires them to do any form of labor or you'll be in for the long haul. Grab a few snacks instead and go somewhere else.

Dan M.

Yelp
Over priced and poor quality. Reminded me of airport grab and go. For Malibu it's not up to par. Go to the burger stand nextdoor.
google avatar

Yamit Y.

Yelp
They have a huge selection of chips, snacks and beverages. Great sandwiches and delicious vegan options! Everything is so fresh and satisfying. They offer many healthy options and a large selection of drinks . They have plenty of picnic tables with umbrellas outside the shop, overlooking a sunny beautiful park.
google avatar

Yelp
Located in the newly remodeled Malibu Country Mart, it's one of a handful of eateries available. Sandwiches, salads, veggie burgers, juices and smoothies -- nice selection. But know it's counter ordering in a convenience store setup: order, pay, get a number, find a table, wait for your number to be called, and pick it up from the counter window. (I thought it was odd that I stood in line, ordered our food with 2 iced teas, which they charged me for. I paid, and they said just grab any from the display fridge. That's great, but there's $2 ones, and $6 ones. They didn't say, so I took what I wanted. This can't be good for profitability.) We waited about 30 mins for our sandwich and salad to be ready, and had a hard time finding an available table, but when it was all said and done, we were able to get a table by the time the food was ready. The Tuna sandwich [$10, 4.5 stars] and Chinese Chicken Salad [$13, 4.5 stars] both were near perfection, with quality and very fresh ingredients. The salad had amazing sliced warm chicken and a very generous portion. While it's not a great and relaxing experience because of stressing for a place to sit and over-hungry with a long wait for the fix, once we sat down and got the eventual food we were really very happy. Thumbs up.

Yelp
Showed up at 9 and they weren't open. I'll revise my review when they update their schedule instead of inconsiderately leaving people guessing .

Yelp
I liked it 4 stars much Johnny 5. **** **** **** **** portafino was delicious-oso Lambo parked out front. You can definitely see the difference on the patrons here then say ventura (just an example, nothing wrong with ventura) (disclosure#2, nothing wrong with lambos or the people who drive them. Another word...we like
