The Best Restaurants in Santa Rosa | Eater SF

"John Ash & Co. has been serving bowls of Estate winter squash and curry soup, and beef tenderloin with mushrooms a la crème since 1980. Much of the produce, fruit, and herbs come from the gardens onsite (the restaurant is on the grounds of the Vintner’s Resort) and the kitchen leans into French technique, a reminder that butter is a verb and chocolate cremeaux is what we should all eat for dessert. Enjoy a classic Bee’s Knees cocktail in the adjoining bar, The Front Room. It’s suitably dark and as classic as Santa Rosa gets." - Christina Mueller

Came here for brunch today and happy hour last night. How did I not know about this place?? Amazing vineyard views, a mile-long vineyard trail, excellent service, a pool that can be accessed via ResortPass, and more. This might be our new local hangout spot!!

My husband and I went to Happy Hour to celebrate my birthday. It was a bright, sunny day and we sat on the patio, a lovely setting next to the vineyard. I ordered my favorite cocktail, the sidecar, which was perfectly prepared--refreshing and not-too-sweet with a slice of beautiful dried lemon floating on top. My husband had the mussels and fries and I had the pulled pork sliders. Both were delicious and served hot. When the server discovered it was my birthday celebration, she brought me a sampling of the bread pudding dessert (made from the morning's leftover pastries) with a bit of ice cream and a chocolate "Happy Birthday plaque." The service, ambiance and food made this a very special day for both of us.

Beautiful restaurant with lovely staff. Food was very good but not amazing. Prices are steep but could be the times right now.

John Ash is a gorgeous Sonoma County destination and the brunch menu is top tier. Be warned that this treat is only available on weekends. The terrace is a perfect place to see the beautiful vineyards and gardens. Excellent service and a gorgeous view with delicious food. We tried the pork belly Benedict, lemon ricotta pancakes, and brioche French toast. The brioche was crispy on the outside and melty on the inside, the pancakes were fluffy, lemony, and then syrup was the right balance of sweet with herb undertones. The pork belly was crispy and it came with a slightly spicy Chipotle aioli that complimented the egg beautifully. The muffins were buttery and crispy on the edges. There was a bit more arugula than I tend to want on the muffins but I think I'll just ask for less of that next time we go. The machiatto I had was bitter in the best way and the Arnold Palmer was the proper mix of tea and lemonade, not too sweet at all. The service was outstanding - friendly, quick, and welcoming. We will be back soon to try the dinner menu. Last tip, take a walk around the whole estate after eating, it's perfect for a stroll and chatting.

5 people. 1 well behaved dog. 1 kid. Everyone had a good time and good meal. One of us was vegan and had enough tasty food. Staff was very accommodating. Great service. Great atmosphere. After dinner took a nice stroll around the vast vineyard and the beautiful resort. Great place for a special occasion.

I love the ambience and service here. Food is very good but not my-head-is-spinning-cant-wait-to-go-back. Calamari starter good, but accompanying dipping sauce spicy! My friend had shrimp, again very spicy. I just think sometimes chefs try too hard, rather than making the ingredients stand for themselves. Bar is super cool, and bartender Matt B. Made me a great gin martinis.

Very good first dinner here. The mushroom ravioli smaller portion was rich, savory and delicious. I enjoyed the Beluga lentil patties with spinach. Partner had the oysters. We shared the Caesar salad which they split for us, and he had the sea bass. All very good but the fish was slightly overcooked. Very competent waiter and beautiful ambience. Can't wait to come back next trip into town!

Upscale dining with nice patio views. Pricing is expensive. But the food is delicious. The venison, osso bucco, and ribs were very tender and well prepared. 👌 The cheese cake and chocolate dessert were on point. Our waiter treated us with free brownie bites at the end of our stay also. Really good experience. 🙂 🍷

Yelp
My husband and I stopped in for a casual date and sat in the bar area. Very casual, relaxed atmosphere. Not a lot of patrons this evening. Started off with a martini and glass of red wine from their diverse wine and cocktail list. Presentation was beautiful. The tacos were flavorful all the way around. Two were perfect for my husband's appetite The soup was decent especially with their fresh focaccia bread. Service was just ok. Our server was nice but she seemed rushed and didn't really want to be on that side of the restaurant. Pulled the short straw. We like our casual stop in after church. We'll be back.

Yelp
I waited over 24 hours to write this. I recognize that the most expensive thing in a restaurant is an empty seat. My mother-in -law turned 88 yesterday. We went to John Ash because we had enjoyed ourselves there in the past and wanted to enjoy a meal with 3 generations. We arrived 10 minutes late for our brunch reservation. The young lady that sat us was very put-out that we were deciding between eating outside or inside . As I said, my mother-in-law is 88 years old and took a little time to decided to sit outside. With a dramatic eye roll , she sat us outside as we asked. She brought us the happy hour menus instead of the brunch menu we were hoping for. My wife went inside to ask for the other menu and was told that they were no longer serving brunch and that the Happy hour was more important. I get it. We were late, there are rules. We should have planned better. No problem. We all decided what we wanted off the happy hour menu. We were going to make the best of it. When no waiter had come to take our order, any order, in 20 minutes, we left and went to Willy's. Which we should have done originally. I cannot leave a review of the food because we did not eat at JA. However, the food at Willy's is always amazing. I recommend Willy's to everyone that asks.

Yelp
Absolutely excellent service! We shared the burrata with the homemade focaccia which was amazing. I had the king salmon with the curry broth which was perfectly sweet and spicy. The bok choy was cooked perfectly. We were able to get a table near the window with excellent views of the vineyard and sunset. Would definitely recommend when in the area!

Yelp
Beautiful venue with a wonderful winery in the back and plenty of seating with good view. Wonderful service. Tried their carbonara which was great, the highlight was their salmon which was perfectly soft and flavorful.

Yelp
Had dinner tonight at John Ash. Everything was fantastic. The mushroom flat bread was delicious. Cauliflower soup the best I've ever had. The salmon was fabulous. Service was perfect. The restaurant was five stars. It was classy, quiet and just a beautiful. Can't wait to get back there.

Yelp
My husband brought me to this nice, enchanted fancy restaurant for my birthday. Reservations were placed online, upon arrival we were greeted and our tables ready within a 3-5min wait. They have a full bar to your right as soon as you walk in. Plenty of space to enjoy a nice cocktail, or if you're in the mood for a 1on1 more personable setting like we were that evening- we choose the outside patio which had heat warmers to keep us warm and toasty, all the while overlooking an endless bound of Sonoma's County finest winery. Our food was great- oyster appetizers along with the mandatory bread n butter. For the main entrée we helped ourselves to a perfectly cooked filet mignon, partnered with a glass of red wine, season mash n veggies. Our Server and all the staff were very attentive and provided great hospitality. Overall, a satisfied birthday dinner. Came home full, blessed and grateful. Thank you.

Yelp
Friends of mine from Los Angeles were in town for the 13K marathon Napa to Sonoma. They are both physicians and very international in their tastes and interests. Without reservation I MADE a reservation for dinner this evening. It was a gross disappointment. John Ash had been inconsistent in times past but for the last few years its reputation was being rewritten one great meal at a time. I am a vegetarian. I will always remember with great fondness a Portobello en croute that was devastatingly good along with other vegetarian offerings as the seasons changed. But with the new menu there was one--ONE--item on the menu that I could have. (Sort of like Henry Ford and the "you can have whatever color you want so long as it's black".) The waitstaff was helpful and suggested that a plate of sides could be done. I also ordered Roasted Cauliflower soup which was much too spicy for me. Ice water was my constant companion. The serving size of the soup was astonishingly small served in a bowl about 5" in diameter and 1" deep. The soup didn't come anywhere near close to the top. Main course came: one of my dining companions ordered fish and the other ordered a mushroom bread which he said was good--and I also noticed that he only ate about 1/3 of it. The presentation of the fish was second rate. My plate of sides was absolutely minimal in serving size and totally unremarkable in its flavors. For the sides there was a small scoop of rice with a very small carafe of a curry veloute to pour over it, mushrooms--a minimal serving, carrots (there were four pieces each about 2" in length) and a very small serving of 6 quartered golden beets. Dessert was a total bust. I ordered an affogato. What did I get for $12.50? One small scoop of vanilla gelato placed in a small iced glass cup with a small expresso carafe on the side. The person who brought it to the table poured the warm expresso over the ice cream all at once. I sat there and watched it melt because no spoon had come with the dessert. I requested a replacement and that a spoon come on the plate and then allow me to pour the expresso on as I wanted. The waitstaff seemed somewhat perturbed at such a request but it was done. It was the sorriest excuse for an affogato that I have ever had bar none. It was barely a cut above Denny's. Seriously. By comparison I had affogato there about 6 months ago and it was stellar. STELLAR. And my coffee that I had requested before dessert came at the same time as dessert, it was lukewarm and reminiscent of Bunn-o-matic quality. No, actually, Bunn-o-matic was better. Over the past couple of years John Ash has been more consistent both in the kitchen and service. Over the past 3-4 years it was a dining experience worth repeating. Something has gone seriously awry with its new invention as John Ash at Vinarosa. What was wrong with Vintner's Inn? As a long time Sonoma County resident I finally adjusted to the name "Vintner's Inn" but Vinarosa has joined the lodging/restaurants that cater to tourists with little concern that maybe we could keep Sonoma County a little more like Sonoma County than another nouveau wine region Napa County knockoff on this side of the hill. For the price paid and lack of food quality, I'm telling my friends to find another solution. This was a very disappointing meal--which also served as an embarassment since I had unequivocally recommended John Ash. With tip--and I had no wine with dinner--my bill was $62.00.

Yelp
The food was remarkably poor despite the high prices: halibut overdone; steaks tough and relatively tasteless that are served with fries as a default (we substituted mashed potatoes that may well have been out of a box); desserts were tiny and the sorbet choice was not at all as described in the menu - presented as a couple teaspoons of two flavors - no berries or decorations as described. The only positive is that we'll never return.

Yelp
Came here after searching for something tasty to eat. Decor here is very nice. You have big booths and bid dining tables. There's also a bar area. We were seated at a booth and our table was completely off. The tilt was basically slanted . We asked for a different table and were seated elsewhere. However instead of them fixing that table they sat someone else there. Strange! We then got our food and it was delicious! What I didn't care about what the server kept disappearing. I ran out of water and no one came to ask if we were ok. Then he came and asked about dessert and then I had the chance to ask for water. Our server sent someone else to give us the water. He seemed lazy! I didn't care for service here but at least food was good .

Yelp
John Ash restaurant is a fabulous place. We went there for lunch last Sunday and had a fantastic time. the food was great and the service was outstanding! We cannot wait to go back for another great experience! Our server was Nika. She treated us like royalty. On a scale of 1-10 this place is a 15.

Yelp
Excellent dining experience. They serve you a complimentory sea bass ceviche as a starter which was very flavorful. We ordered a tuna tartar and it is one of the best ones I have ever had. It was served with seaweed and aioli. I ordered halibut and it was served in a tomato based soup sauce with mini muscles and mashed corn. It reminded me of a Jambalaya and was delicious. There is also complimentary bread with homemade butter. The butter was to die for so was the jalapeno corn bread. I realized this was in my draft way back in 2015 and was never posted. So my review may be outdated now

Yelp
One of our favorite bars in Sonoma County with a great happy hour. Ambiance: 5 stars, super chill Bartenders: 5 stars, the drink selection is top notch. Always a good sign when a place is pouring vineyards like Williams Selyem pinot by the glass. Food: 4 stars, no complaints. Little pricey but thats due to the ambiance of the venue. Place is a gem, try it out. Bar is the best but on the patio overlooking the vineyard is great for 4 or more when weather permits.

Yelp
Our anniversary dinner couldn't have been better! The food was amazing!! Our server was super sweet and attentive and the location was beautiful.

Yelp
I was having one of the worst days of my life and our guy Allen completely changed our day around and took amazing care of us. Ended up having a nice celebration but the best part was just our interaction with our server Allen. He clearly is a true pro, took the best care of us but was such a genuinely kind human being. Food of course was amazing as usual and the ambience is always superb!

Yelp
Tuesday in Sonoma County wine country, and we were looking for a more quiet and upscale Happy Hour. Needed a respite from the crowds. Well, we certainly found the perfect place and definitely off the "tourist" beaten path. John Ash & Co. Yelp was instrumental in locating this elegant and classy HH spot. Plus, seeing and reading a review by Yelp CM, Mary V., Healdsburg (speaking of classy), sealed the deal even though our destination was only for HH and not dinner about which she had written. However, after our visit, a return for dinner service would definitely be considered! Located in a more remote area of Santa Rosa, with such beautiful landscaping (including wine country's favorite...grape vines!), it was stunning from the minute you entered the grounds for sure! This is a resort. John Ash & Co is the trendy restaurant providing food for Vitners Resort (which includes a hotel and spa). The Front Room Bar and Lounge is in the restaurant where 3 of us enjoyed a serene and top-notch happy hour. (Served from 3 p.m., until 5 p.m., daily) A hostess greeted us and directed us to the very close by bar. First impressions...low key, casual elegance! And doing a nice business for 330 p.m., I might add. Loved the low lights, which contributed to the charming ambiance. And the roomy, comfortable chairs were perfect. (Lest I forget...a fireplace too. Think winter:) This is exactly what we wanted and needed. The well-dressed bartender came to our table just as we were sitting. He provided us with HH and regular menus. Took water orders and then gave us time to relax and peruse it all. During the course of an hour and more, we had two rounds of drinks and some fabulous HH appetizers. HH menu and photos incuded. If we had not been going to dinner elsewhere, we all agreed that dinner here would have been incredible. Great food, views, inside outside dining...what's not to like! This was one of Santa Rosa's first restaurants to bring the farm to table, local, and seasonal ingredients experience to the dining plate. Many of the herbs are grown on-site. So you would be in store for a memorable brunch, lunch, and dinner experience. Sadly, John Ash, Renaissance man for sure, passed away in March of 2023. The company has been sold to Jackson Family Wines, I believe. It looks like to me they are taking it in the right direction. And I expect many more good things to come. Free Wifi, dog friendly, and great customer service. How can you go wrong! See you at dinner... right? Cheers!

Yelp
The food was good, the complimentary birthday cake was not. The ambiance was beautiful with glass walls over looking vineyards. The servers were preparing for the evening rush so we felt their stress and rushed during an early dinner that was during a slower time. But I would definitely come back here!

Yelp
John Ash remains an establishment of Sonoma County and classic county fare. There are few restaurants that have such exceptional quality to price point. Whether you want inside seating, sun room, or to sit out on the patio, you get the sense of wine country dining. I love that the dishes feel elevated but still homey. Service is exceptional. All the waitstaff have tried the dishes and can provide recommendations. Price: $$ Overall: 10/10 Must get: truffle fries, pizza of the month, sliders

Yelp
During a recent trip (this past week), I brought friends from out of town to John Ash - the restaurant inside Vintners Inn. We chose a bottle of wine we wanted to enjoy with dinner and shared the selection with our server. Sometime had passed, and we thought perhaps they no longer had the bottle in inventory as they were taking a while. When our server returned with the bottle, he shared with us that the Sommelier had pulled him aside as they noticed an "error in the listing price of the bottle" and that he had been sent back to our table to "advise us that an adjustment had already been made to the price". The bottle we selected, which was listed at $65, had now become $265. The Sommelier had even gone as far to change the listing price on the digital tablet menu BEFORE sending the waiter spoke with us. Super tacky. We shared that while it was unfortunate to see an error had been made on their side, they advertised the price to us and we felt very strongly that the original price should be honored, period. We past on the bottle and told the waiter we really thought the whole approach was awful. He apologized and we tried to move on. But, what really rubbed me wrong was that not at one point during the dinner did any manager appear to even offer an apology, or address the error. They sent the waiter to apologize for them. The entire interaction was rather raw - ...'this is the new price he set and shared you can take it or leave it.' The wine was a Chev Pinot Noir by Michael Browne that sells for $85 from the winery. Through wholesale, the restaurant probably got it even cheaper. Maybe $65? To be asked to pay $265 for an $85 bottle on the heels of the error was in poor taste, and not in keeping with the reputation of what the restaurant used to be. After we left the restaurant, I actually sent an email to the hotel manager, and as of this writing, NO ONE FROM JOHN ASH OR VINTNERS has replied. I am not quite sure if I will ever want to return again, let alone rexommend it. The whole exchange was off-putting. I understand that restaurants have mark ups.... a 400% markup is robbery. To be honest with the yelp community you are better off driving by John Ash and finding a Starks restaurant, which is a few exits away. Each one of their locations has amazing curated wine lists, and they won't try to rob you over the markup. Don't get me wrong, there will be a markup... but $40 mark up as opposed to $200, seems more in line. To the mgmt at John Ash, people have choices on where they will spend their money. Maybe you need a reminder of that.

Yelp
This isn't so much a complaint as a PSA - we came in for drinks before an event at LBCA and paid $39 before tip for one glass of local (nothing special) wine and one martini. I get that one can't expect it to be priced similarly to a basic bar but it seems excessive. If that doesn't turn you off, enjoy! The bar is nice and cozy with a clubby feel, good service and good drinks.

Yelp
I would have to say unfortunately I was disappointed. It was beautiful inside and staff are so great but the food was not good for what you pay for it. The pork Sugo was not done right at all. The inch of wine I paid $20 for was not good and I unfortunately will not eat dinner there again.

Yelp
I had an amazing birthday dinner last night with my boyfriend and I !! Our server was Annie and she was very attentive and friendly! Mariela, the server assistant was very attentive also! The head chef came out, Sergio (Annie said he was from Top Chef, Mexico- awesome!!) and presented us his delish gnocchi dish and added Parmesan foam with truffles from Italy!!!! Amazing experience! I wish I recorded the whole thing I had the Prawns and scallops on polenta, yummy and my boyfriend had the steak and fries, the steak was perfectly cooked medium-rare and he added a side of prawns and scallops (worth the extra $!). The cocktails were delish! I had the one with the numbers in the name ... nice and fruity and sweet if you're into that, and the espresso martini which was amazing!! The night ended with nice small birthday treats. Highly recommend for a nice evening out!

Yelp
This review is for HAPPY HOUR We used to come to happy hour here ALL the time when I lived down the street. It was right up there equal to Starks with food quality and prices, so I was shocked when coming here the other day. First off, I was surprised that the place was pretty empty because it used to be so popular it could be hard to even get a table. The $5 happy hr wine is now $12 a glass. Offering Angeline sav blanc which I just purchased at the local circle k for $12 a bottle. Appetizers which are always excellent range from $9-$11, but I will definitely reconsider when choosing where I meet up to have happy hour from now on!

Philip S.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere and good service. Very disappointed with the food. Salmon with sausage served on a smear of little black peas. No sauce of any kind. A piece of farmed salmon served with the skin on it. Many local restaurants offer more interesting meals. Very expensive. My last time here. Phil

Yelp
We just had a spontaneous light dinner at John Ash in the Sunroom and ordered off of the bar menu. "Oliver", newly hired, served us and was outstanding. Regarding the famous truffle fries, thank God the Restaurant heeded the feedback of many of us locals on bringing back the original truffle fries recipe. One of the chefs who is long gone, had destroyed the classic way that John Ash has been preparing the truffle fries for years. Thank you John Ash management for responding to overwhelming feedback to revert back to the original way the truffle fries are prepared and served. We will now resume frequenting John Ash for wonderful meals because you have reinstated the original truffle fries recipe.

Yelp
The place is over priced. The menu online is not accurate to the one in person. Online the Caesar salad is present and in person you have to ask for it because the menu doesn't have it. The food wasn't the best, the Caesar salad came with legit romaine lettuce not even cut. Wasn't the best Caesar salad I've ever had.. also chicken was extra charge but small portion for the salad. I asked for no archovies and it still came with some. The service is fine but could be improved. I went with a few friends and the waiter was more attentive than ours for the table next to us with an older couple. If you want to spend a lot, this spot could be for you for aesthetic purposes.

Miranda W.

Yelp
What a beautiful meal! We stopped in to enjoy their New Years Eve dinner experience. Our server, Annie, was very attentive and made our night even more special. Each course was equally delicious as it was pleasing to look at. You can tell so much care goes into each dish. Would highly recommend, this is a meal that me and my loved ones will remember

Yelp
I've had good and bad experiences here. It's pricey and the taste of the food doesn't always match the price. When it does, it is exceptional. My wife ordered the chicken dish ($38) and was underwhelmed; she felt it was bland in flavor and even thought the chicken was overcooked. I ordered the filet mignon ($55) with whipped potatoes, brocholini and sauted mushrooms with demi glaze. It was amazing. Steak cooked to perfection. Everything on my plate was perfect. My son got the linguini and clams ($38). It had an unexpected amount of red pepper flake that made it too spicey for him. I tasted it, and it was mild to medium spice level. He is a spice beginner. Anyone who can handle more then mild would not have an issue. The service was impeccable. The table was looking out on a beautiful rose garden in the foreground and an expansive vineyard in the background. Amazing! The bar restaurant is warm, amber and inviting with more affordable food like burgers and tacos etc if that's more your style.

Bob N.

Yelp
Exceptional dining experience. Ash always does it right, with every detail perfectly accomplished. The service is impeccable. Inside looks like the interior of a European villa.

Serena D.

Yelp
Im so torn on how to rate this place. The bar is where it's at, the drinks are magical, the food is amazing, the bartenders are friendly, and the vibe is super fun. So 5 stars, right? Would be but on 2 occasions we've been there just past 9 (closing time) finishing drinks and making new friends and enjoying ourselves while the bartenders closed up and both times the manager comes over at 9:01 giving us looks like "why are you here?!" And then says something to the bartender in a low tone while looking over our direction. He was back looking again a couple minutes later and it totally killed our vibe and night. We looked at new friends we'd made at the bar and all decided it must be time to go. We're coming back to enjoy the food, drinks, and company but I hate that I feel like I have to watch the clock and leave by 8:59 so no one is in trouble...

Haley N.

Yelp
A group of my friends and I went for the New Year's Eve 5 course meal they had and it was amazing! The presentation was beautiful and the staff were so friendly! The restaurant was also very cute!

Sonja V.

Yelp
Snobby, rude, unprofessional and total lack of leadership. Will not ever reccommend or even mention this tourist trap to anyone.

Marlene H.

Yelp
Food was terrible. We ordered a flat bread that was recommended by the bartender. Tasteless and soggy. Service was good. Bartenders were engaging. We used to be regulars here. This place has slid backwards. It will be awhile until we return. Sad.

Kaisa G.

Yelp
Happy to report the new tacos on the bar menu are delicious! Both the birria and the shrimp are delicious! So happy to see they fixed the funky street tacos!!!

Yelp
Was extremely disappointed with Easter Brunch today . Buffet style not a good idea. I like it when we sit at the table and we were serve they had selected menu for Easter and for Mother's Day. People touching the food, kids using their fingers to grab food. not healthy if you ask me and the price was outrageous. Food not hot enough and the Egg Benedict was the worst I ever had the bread was dry and they were cold . However, The waiters and waitresses were accommodating. They need to go back to the way it used to be. Thank you.

Yelp
In a word.... YUCK! Can't believe this place has gone so bad since our last visit. 33rd year anniversary. Booked online....they bunged up reservation. Not a problem as it was dead and they easily sat us where I intended in the first place. Now, the joint still looks amazing and service is just as great, as per usual. I don't know WHATS up with the menu but there's literally nothing to eat. I'm not a kid going to prom so I ain't ordering medallions of beef like some Rube.... So it was sturgeon for the wife....duck for myself. I ate mine....not that it was particularly edible.... The wife's sturgeon (why in earth is the only fish offering a bottom feeder?!!)....tasted like mud.... Even the scallop appetizer tasted off and it's hard to screw up scallops. Forced to have dessert to clear our palates. I'm told there's a new chef so maybe that's the problem cuz to compare the food to Applebees might offend patrons there.

Yelp
We I wanted to take the wife on a date night. We both talked about trying this place. So I made reservations and give it a try. The beer section is good and cocktails. The calamari was so good. The wife and I split the halibut. They do change extra for that. I ordered a 2nd beer but apparently they went to the wrong table. I told them I want to cancel it but they brought me one on that house when they figured it out. Our waitress was super nice. The halibut was really good.

Yelp
I had previously only been here for happy hours years ago. Tonight we went for a friends birthday. The ambiance was awesome. We sat out on a covered patio that had plenty of warmers. Our waiter was attentive and did great with our party of 9. The lamb chops were cooked to perfection as were the filet's ordered at the table. Everyone really enjoyed their meals we definitely will be going back to enjoy a happy hour sometime soon.

Yelp
We couldn't wait to come back and get more delicious food!! The service was okay, maybe because they were so busy that night but we loved the place because it's a perfect getaway for those romantic dinner.

Yelp
When it's Saturday, and you're a party of six (and you can't get into anywhere in Healdsburg), who you gonna call? John Ash! So thankful that John Ash could accommodate our last minute group plans. John Ash, at the Vintner's Resort, is a beautiful and classy establishment known for their locally-sourced California cuisine and wine list! They offer indoor and outdoor dining - the outdoor space overlooks vineyards and looks lovely. It was a HOT day and we were eating during the earlybird hours when the restaurant wasn't crowded so we felt comfortable eating indoors. We ordered: HOUSEMADE PARKER HOUSE ROLLS $6 - good but not wow ENDIVE SALAD $13 - fresh, flavorful, delish! CALAMARI FRITTI  $16 - our group enjoyed this PASTA CARBONARA - $22 - good but not wow BEEF SHORT RIBS - $36 - a few in our group ordered this dish and loved it! The main courses/larger plates may be pricey, but the portions are generous and the price tag matches the quality, setting, and service. We really enjoyed our night and will certainly return.

Yelp
My companion and I had the chefs tasting menu. It was a very enjoyable meal and both of us would recommend our experience.

Yelp
I don't know why they don't have more stars. This is a beautiful restaurant with delicious food and amazing cocktails, and great service! Praises for Josh for being patient and attentive with us - after wine tasting all day. We brought a bottle of wine with us to dinner, but I still ordered cocktails. The handcrafted specialty drinks all sounded wonderful and original. My friend ordered the Divine Martini and I got the Old-Fashioned. This OF was fantastic!! The only way this could've been better is if a shirtless Ryan Gosling made it for me. For appetizers, we ordered: 1/2 Dozen Hog Island Oysters - Can't go wrong with oysters. Estate Heirloom Tomato and Burrata Salad - Omg!! This was so delicious and perfectly seasoned. I wish there were more bread because 4 people shared. All the dinner entrees were beautifully plated and were all delicious. We each wanted to share but then we also didn't because I wanted to eat my entire dish myself. Haha! We ordered: Hobbs' Bacon Wrapper Pork Tenderloin - divine! Braided Boneless Prime Beef Short Ribs Braciole - my dish. It was tender and meaty and sooooo full of flavor! I want to order it again! Pan seared diver scallops and gulf prawns - my friend loved it so much he wouldn't share. Lol. He was so glad I'm allergic to shellfish. Can't go wrong with any of the desserts. We were celebrating birthdays and we got mini Creme brûlées which were creamy and marvelous! We also ordered: Bittersweet Chocolate Pot de Créme - loved this!!! Not too sweet but oh so rich and chocolatey! Dave's Gourmet Ice Cream Trio: Mexican hot cocoa, lemon bar, and peach with orange hazelnut biscotti - all the ice creams were amazing! I've never had ice cream like this before!! All home made with chunks of fruit and great flavors. Can't pick a favorite. They were all so good!! I want to come back!!!

Yelp
Beautiful drive in- will say I was surprised by how quick the turn into the restaurant area was off the main road. Yes, it IS the beautiful grove almost immediately on your left that you wish you could drive through! The restaurant itself is very cute, tucked behind some nice trees. They have a nice outdoor seating area with those personal fires for heating (idk what they're called), a semi outdoor patio that has glass/plastic panels that can be opened, as well as indoor seating. They have a sign that says unvaccinated guests will be required to sit outside. Their bathrooms are pretty decent, 3 stalls and the sinks have fast hot water which is always nice. We got a charcuterie board and rolls to start. My friends ordered the scallops and tagliarini, while I ordered short rib. We also got drinks- they wine, I a drink called the Peachy Keen(?). My cocktail was delicious. If you sipped and aerated it, the white peach flavor bloomed in the most amazing way. If I weren't the driver I could've had two more of just that drink. The charcuterie board was also excellent. I particularly liked their goat cheese and jam/fruit spreads (I'm sorry I can't remember what exactly they were). The bread was tasty but imho could've had more flavor in the bread (or maybe just more salt)- also a little unevenly greasy. The ribs were amazing! The meat was very easy to pull apart and bite, no stringy difficult to chew pieces, and the sauce was wonderful, an occasional chunk of tomato making the bite extra tasty. The only sad thing was that I was (and still am, 3.5 hrs later) too full to eat dessert. They had some nice desserts on their menu. Still, when the check came, it came with chocolate mint truffles. Lucky for me my friends don't like mint in their chocolate so I had all three! We passed half a dozen vineyards on the way in. This happened to be our first stop because we came to Santa Rosa late afternoon, but if you wanted to do wine tastings in the area and then get a nice meal, this is totally reasonable! Drinks were 10-25 for cocktails to fine wine, the charcuterie board was 28 but other starters were in the 10-20 range, and our dishes were 20-40. Not cheap, but the ambience and food quality made it a good price. (We also saw someone celebrating their 75th birthday!) One note: it does seem like fancy enough a place to maybe care a little about dress. Their site says business casual. I did end up wearing sneakers and they didn't kick me out or anything, so maybe just nothing too crazy is fine.

Yelp
Good food, great ambiance! Spoiling Christmas Eve, 2024. Very dismayed ! Not with the food but the disrespect regarding our timely reservation and arrival. NOT THE FIRST TIME OF TOTAL DISMAY! We have been frequenting John Ash for 30 years entertaining clients, family, friends, and as a choice for our personal felicity due to good food and excellent ambiance. However, often disappointed in reservation management and the instructed seating staff who then must disregard details to any guest requests . It happens often and leaves a feeling of disregard regardless of timely and all advance planning by the guest . We have accepted this for 30 years, being treated nonchalantly instead of valued appreciated guests who continually pay the price for good chefs,( though overpriced). Yet, the food is consistently good, even excellent at times. As often as we frequent the restaurant, the seasonal menus are not changed enough to suit a variety instead of repeats for us, but. . . Having said that, we keep trying to get better at "fool proof"advance planning ourselves, even bringing bouquets in advance to assure added welcome for our guests. Even so, a bouquet of hydrangias was nonchalantly set in the sun and had wilted upon our arrival the same day of an early evening reservation. We could go on with more dismay of this sort. Yet, due to location to our home and the gorgeous gardens and ambiance, we have continued to pursue the guest list. IT'S OVER! We were shoved aside upon arrival on Christmas Eve,2024. With determination early on in order to prepare and avoid their past history of many disappointments, we kept calling to reserve on the Christmas eve list as we were told it wasn't ready to start booking. When it was ready, we requested a specific table for 7 guests and spoke about how to best avoid disappointment. Therefore, part of our guest group offered to check us in arriving early prior to our table requested in front of the fireplace at 5pm while we guided and transported more of our guests not as familiar with the location. We all arrived within the crowded entry at 5:00 and met with our guests who arrived specifically to check us in earlier prior to 5:00 . Yet, we were herded to an alternate table, NOT our Requested table, even though the requested table sat empty . My inquiry as to advance planning was treated non chalantly. Though I had persistently called being told the reservation list wasn't ready yet , upon arrival, we were told that they had reservations since June and even so, it was 1st come, 1st. served accomodated only by physical presence. An injured guest in our party using a cane was then requested to step up to the platform area. This was an additional reason why the table by the fire was an advance request as well as a 30 year desire to be accepted as guests at that specific table. Because it was unoccupied, we inquired regarding our advance planning efforts. THEN told, that they had people coming later for it! What happen at THAT MOMENT To The PREVIOUS RHETORIC ABOUT FIRST COME , FIRST SERVED? ! We are mostly tolerant but after 30 years overlooking with gentle understanding of business challenges, we are done with our 30 year history at JOHN ASH ! Personally, we think is he is an icon in wine Country and the chef who taught us how to make a great zabaglione!

Yelp
It's beginning to look a lot like cocktails." I booked a table (Back Room)to celebrate the soon arrival of Christmas vacation with seven work colleagues (teachers). Perfect location, relaxed vibe, great service, and delicious eats! This happy hour offers an impeccable assortment of top-notch bites under $8-$10.00, well crafted mixed drinks, beer, and seasonal menu that showcases Sonoma County's local flavor! In fact-The seasonal menu ingredients are sourced from the property's culinary garden, just yards away from the kitchen. Fresh! Drinks and more drinks. Our group loved the mule but this drink selection offers a wonderful selection of spirits that will make everyone happy. I always go off the happy hour menu and order the Irish coffee (my go to comfort flavor). We couldn't decide what NOT to order -so we sampled most of the menu! All perfectly delightful! We ordered the: Hummus and Pita- olives, smoked paprika, estate olive oil, Truffle Parmesan Fries- roasted garlic aioli, GRILLED FISH TACO La Tortilla Factory handmade tortillas, chipotle salsa, slaw (2 per order), the Spanish meatloaf sliders, and HOUSEMADE LOADED TATER TOTS  Journeyman smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, roasted garlic crème fraîche. Tip: book or arrive early. This is a popular and busy happy hour. Service: Excellent!! We were greeted with a warm "hello" upon entering and quickly seated to our table. An overall wonderful experience!

Yelp
I'm glad we went back because we had a much better experience this time - it was very good! Thanks to our waiter, Josh, for his attentive service. We ate outdoors which is a lovely environment. Highly recommended.

Yelp
My fiancé and I decided to come here on a whim. Thankfully for a Saturday evening, they had plenty of seating available even though we didn't have reservations. We started with some cocktails- a Manhattan for my fiancé which he loved and a simple double bourbon neat for me. Service was quick and super friendly. Our server checked in with us a few times but wasn't overbearing. We ordered the pork belly and beef potstickers as our appetizer and they were an absolute delight. Although there was only 3 of them, they were large and stuffed with a good amount of meat. The sauce was incredible. They were cooked perfectly, fried nicely on the bottom with a soft, doughy top. My fiancé ordered the New York steak with potatoes au gratin and ratatouille. I decided on the carbonara. The steak was cooked a nice medium-rare but wasn't seasoned very well and had minimal sear/char. The steak was served with a chili hollandaise sauce which my fiancé said made the meal. The potatoes were lovely, very thinly sliced and layered thick. They were creamy and cooked perfectly. The ratatouille was delicious. My carbonara was a little underwhelming. My pasta was over cooked which is a big turn off for me. The sauce was good, though, lots of Parmesan. The pancetta was perfect and the peas were large and fresh. When they brought it to me, it seemed like a very small portion but I was comfortably full after finishing it. We were seated outside and the setting was gorgeous. About halfway through our meal, a large party was seated nearby and there were two young girls with them. They played and ran around in the grassy area which might have annoyed some, but I was really glad to see them having so much fun and that the restaurant didn't try to make them stop. All in all, it was a good meal and we left satiated.

Yelp
My husband and I came here years ago for our anniversary dinner. The staff and waiter were snobby, dismissive and tended more to the older white customers. We thought maybe because we were younger they assumed we were less likely to spend? I don't know. The busser was very friendly and seemed to be the only one checking in on us -we ended up giving him the cash tip. I have never and will never return due to our first visit. The food was fine but the service left a bad taste in my mouth. There's much better restaurants in Sonoma county without the attitude

Yelp
NEW OWNERS BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Word on the street is that head chef Tom Schmidt left after 15 years of working at John Ash, Because the new owners wanted to make everything from frozen meats and canned foods/sauces! And since he didn't want to put his name on that kind of poor quality he left, so did his sue chef and head Pastry chef. This place has Plummeted into a nice Scenery with Denny's quality food. This is so sad, me and my family been going here for the last 10 years+ always was amazing. But now it's horrible. Do your self a favor and go somewhere else. I will be.
