Be prepared for a VERY LONG WAIT. We were aware there'd be a wait, but unfortunately for our first visit we arrived on a day where the wait time wasn't "normal". On this day, we arrived and stood in line at 11:44am. We paid for our food and walked out the door to sit and eat at 1:04pm (grand total of standing in line for 1 hour and 20 minutes). Our wait time would have been even longer if it wasn't for the group of 7 people with the fire department ahead of us in line that decided to leave.
The couple in front of us who frequent John Mull's shared that normal maximum wait time is about 45 minutes, and in the summer, they have the outdoor serving area also set up to help the line move faster. I can't imagine standing in line during the summer heat for even 45 minutes, though. To management: if possible, could you please expand the number of POS and serving stations and/or a Restaurant Pager System for orders to be placed and then filled?
Getting past the extended wait time in line, the rest of the experience was enjoyable. They offered us generous portions of food (so much so that the container lid broke when the server attempted to close it), all delicious foods, covered dog friendly outdoor seating, and very friendly customer service with good vibes.
We ordered the 3 meats combo: pork ribs, brisket, pulled pork, with mac and cheese, corn bread, and yams for our sides with an additional side of potato salad. Sadly, they do not offer sweet tea, but they do offer canned Brisk lemon ice tea. Pulled pork was divine, brisket was excellent in texture and not a hint dry, and was extremely smoky. The hubby who loves smokey meats said it was too smokey for him, but still very good. Pork ribs were very good, their texture mimicked boiled meat- a bit chewy, and surprisingly, they did not have much fat. The potato salad and corn bread were also good, but the yams and mac and cheese were the definite stars of all the sides. The BBQ sauce is very unique to John Mull's- not very sweet and rich in a tomato umami flavor.
Of all the BBQ places we've had the privilege of enjoying throughout Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and Texas, John Mull's is one of the top memorable ones for us. If it's your first visit, DEFINITELY get the pulled pork, mac and cheese, and yams- do not skip those! We look forward to returning at least once more, hopefully with the average or less wait time, though.
