Los Compañeros Opens in Adams Morgan - Eater DC

"Another pandemic victim, Johnny’s Half Shell shuttered after the two realized keeping it open wouldn’t be sustainable in the pandemic context. Seafood doesn’t travel well for take-out, says Fulchino." - Evan Caplan

The only carryout I go to. The only negative thing I have to say is there are lots of rats that I see all around this location. But that seems to be a northwest DC issue overall sadly. This is not a reflection on Johnny's at all. I highly recommend whoever reads this post tries them. Especially the wings, with fried rice and gravy with mumbo sauce on the wings. Oh, and the steak and cheese subs are delicious also.

Google
The most unassuming place you’ll (hopefully) stumble into. My partner and I discovered this place to wet our appetite before dinner in Columbia Heights and we were so grateful to have given this place a chance!! It’s shabby looking on the inside..but their chicken wings with mambo sauce were great. We ate it fresh, in the one sad table inside the store but it was crispy, seasoned well (ask for mambo sauce on the side), and had so much value $$ (1 wing = drumstick +flats + wing tip). Would definitely come back and recommend it to anyone craving wings!

Google
I am Chinese. I have eaten a lot of Chinese food in my life. This is excellent Chinese food and certainly the best I’ve had in DC proper thus far. The Kung pao chicken and house special soup in particular are spot on. No notes. Just order it

For clarification: this is in no way a reflection on Johnny's Carryout, but a critique of the particular delivery itself. My order never arrived. Called the Grubhub delivery guy, Mbaye, and he proceeded to mock me by pretending to not understand and giving incoherent, one word answers. Picture he texted me as "proof" of delivery was a blurred, dark black and white image of what looked like somebody's grass (which is stupid considering I live in an apartment). I don't know what his problem was but I can only assume he ate my order. The last I heard from Grubhub they were not refunding my purchase but giving me a credit of the amount plus an extra credit of $10. I told them I wanted the purchase refunded to my card. Haven't heard back...

Google
It's an unassuming little restaurant. The set up is kinda grungy but in the best way. You can't dine in. When you walk in there's a window that only just barely opens enough for you to communicate your order and pay. They have all the best kinds of fast food you would ever want for an affordable price. Highly recommend. Yum.

Google
I’m so sad to post this this has been my go to place for rib tips, steak and cheese, and pizza rolls I live all the way in Maryland and I send people to pick up for me all the time but unfortunately I have to say FARWELL GOODBYE PEACE not only did they start putting generic sauce in the rib tips but the steak and cheese lots it’s flavor and they stop making the rolls. I called to ask if the chef was going well if he’s still there and he said yeah New cook and the sauce takes to long to make so you guys if you dont know me Im Mami and I gotchu on the sauce

Yelp
Listen the place is ugly af but don't be fooled! Prices are DC-reasonable and the serving size is huge (hand in pic for reference lol). Chicken lo mein was v saucy and had lots of chicken. They have classic Chinese-American dishes as well as great wings and fries, if you're looking for bang for your buck this is it!

Vanessa S.

Yelp
It's good, the original pictures on Apple Maps looked kind of scary, but it's good. Man how many more characters do you need? I'm just trying to write a nice review with a new picture.

Yelp
3.5 stars strikes me as about right. Rounding up because we called in an order on Christmas Day and it was ready in 15 minutes! They had already sold out of the cheese wontons, but they communicated that quickly to me and the steak and cheese egg rolls we got instead were a fun crispy take on a classic. By far the best dish we got was the chicken lo mein. This is classic Chinese American takeout - nice strips of chicken and veggies with lots of sauced thick noodles. The beef chow mein was good but the sauce was a little less flavorful. The moo goo gai pan had almost no flavor, so I'd skip that next time. Overall, a good if uneven spot in the neighborhood for Chinese American takeout classics.

Yelp
SOOOOOO GOOD AND SO FAST! I ordered the broccoli chicken w/extra brown sauce. It had so much chicken and it actually had extra brown sauce!!! It was soooooo good some of the best Chinese food I've ever had and it's literally a 1min walk from my apt! I'm so excited I highly recommend. I also ordered the pan fried dumpling but they resembled gyoza more so that traditional dumplings, but they were still so good and the dipping sauce they came with. Fast and friendly service :)

Yelp
This is a takeout place on 14th street and they have good wings. The mumbo sauce was too sweet for my liking but service was pretty fast.

Yelp
I love the chicken, wings and fries as well as a shrimp eggrolls hereFried ChickenShrimp Egg Roll

Yelp
I've tried a few carry out in Adams Morgan, and Johnny's by far is my favorite. The flavors and amount of food is well worth it! You can call in our orders for faster service. Shrimp egg rolls are very tasty with nice size shrimp inside. ** My only complaint is the price of the lunch special. It would be nice if you had a choice of egg roll or drink with your meal**

Yelp
The food was ok but the service was the kind of service that i felt like Johnny's Carryout thinks that black people have to patronize them no matter what they say or what comment they make. You never make comments to anyone or say something that you can't verify. You always find johnny's in what they think is somewhat a low income neighborhood and think black people will patronize them no matter what their conduct is like. if you took a count of other races that ate at Johnny's you would get a count of just a few people that are not black. It is far time out that people stop judging people by the color of their skin but by content of their mind. I will never eat at Johnny's again. If you can't get respect then you must demand respect by not eating at Johnny's yourself. All the money we get is the same and printed by the U.S. Government.

Yelp
They food is good sometimes. I come to this carryout almost everyday. But they need to get it together, the food is always hot. If you pick it up on time
google avatar

Yelp
If you want some pretty decent Chinese or my favorite greasy cheesesteak in the city (fast food style, but sooooo damn good), this is your place. I'm am all about it and it's neighborhood go-to more times a month (week?) than I should admit....
google avatar

Louisa N.

Yelp
Five stars for the fried chicken. Especially with the sweet and sour sauce they give with it!

Kimone M.

Yelp
just go like the price plus the best mumbo sauce chicken is always fresh and fried hard and juicy like im writing right now wanting to order this place is great always good plus they take all forms of payment and easy on the pocket

Brady J.

Yelp
Ordered 20 wings--it was 20 FULL wings for $20.50. Fried southern style and served with a pint of sweet and sour in the side. Delicious. Definitely my new go to place for wings.

Yelp
I love Johnny's is so fast and they are in a great location! Thank you for making Chinese's food good!

Yelp
This place looks freaking terrifying, so it took me and my roommate about 7 months (and a few beers and a missed lunch) to man up and try this place despite it being across the street. WAITING WAS A HUGE MISTAKE. EAT THERE NOW. This place is actually great. Absolutely my favorite place for low-brow Chinese in DC. The food is standard takeout Chinese but not gross/oily/spoiled, which is usually the case in DC. The veggie lo mein and fried cheese wontons (no judging) are particularly good but everything that we have ever gotten has been pretty delicious (including the wings, which are SURPRISING solid). Bonus: You can watch your order being cooked fresh right through the bulletproof glass!! Food is always ready within 10 minutes, and usually you will get some random diabetes-inducing flavored soda for free (like peach... who the hell drinks peach soda??). Also, the people taking orders speak impeccable English, so placing phone orders is super easy. Overall, my biggest problem with this place is I am eating there too often out of sheer laziness and I am afraid of gaining 25 lbs of delicious Chinese food weight. Johnny's 4 life.
google avatar

Jeff T.

Yelp
I'm sure Mike Isabella is thrilled that this carryout has the same average rating as Graffiato. I live across the street and it satisfies a need: the f-my-job-and-f-my-fat-ass-I'm-getting-take-out-right-now need. The food is overly saucy and the dumplings are overly-doughy but the lady usually throws in a free soda for good measure and to make up for the man lying on the sidewalk out front screaming and convulsing. I'm not the richest girl in Columbia Heights, but I am the luckiest.
google avatar

Megan G.

Yelp
If you like drifters, you'll love Johnny's. What it lacks in ambience it makes up for with sheer square footage of bulletproof glass. But also, surprisingly good roasted pork fried rice. So just get it to go, and probably avoid eye contact with your fellow patrons, many of whom seem a bit off. Johnny's is quick with the order, so you'll be out the door before you know it.
google avatar

Miyonna J.

Yelp
Can't get enough of this place! Wings, rice, Mumbo sauce - the only thing I get from this place but I'm sure the other food is good too. Always quick always friendly.
google avatar

Jonathan A.

Yelp
Yeahhhhhh, NO! The food is terrible, the store is dirty, and the people who stand outside are crazy. I went there drunk, and it was still terrible. Never again. Pay a bit more, go to Thaitannic or Gloria's Pupuseria down the street for cheap eats (that you can actually eat).
google avatar

Nyc J.

Yelp
I live across the street and stare at this place every time I walk by... after a night of partying, my roommate and I decided to give it a shot. The menu is gigantic! They have just about everything under the sun... so if you are looking for super cheap, low-to-mid quality fried chicken and rice. For $4 I got 4 fried chicken wings and fried rice... suremy stomach nearly exploded an hour later, but it was good chicken. Try their mambo sauce.

Yelp
Please, DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE. The service is Awful, the food is sub par and to add insult to injury the woman tried to cheat me out of my change. After I brought it to her attention she emphatically argued with me about it and tried to convince me to believe something that was TOTALLY UNTRUE and after going over a basic math lesson with her and showing her that I wasn't stupid she finally corrected the change but was still short five cents. It was all about the principle, she knew exactly what she was doing and deliberately tried to cheat me. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME GOING THERE.

Yelp
I am ordering from Johnnys again... Why? Because they are awesome! Fried dumplings, combo lomein, sesame beef and everything els I've got the best!!! It's old school delicious! And order steak and cheese... That is tight too!
google avatar

Andrea M.

Yelp
Cheap good Chinese food. My roommate and I just moved into the neighborhood a few weeks back and decided we just had to try Johnnys sooner rather than later. Well after a few beers near the Hill, we decided that last night was the night. Totally good. And I am pretty sure they make it when you order it because it took awhile (which is okay by me)
google avatar

Yelp
It's a carryout that serves it's purpose which is to feed you stomach for cheap. The food is decent, the food is cheap, the food will not give you food poisoning. I mean, what do you expect...it IS A CARRYOUT IN DC. So, it's a late night, you're in Columbia Heights, you want something quick, cheap and know it'll do the job of curing your hunger pains, then this is the place to go!
google avatar

Yelp
I live not too far from here. I am pretty happy with this place although its nothing particularly amazing. The food is quality, and the delivery is usually pretty prompt. They are like a lot of 'Chinese' food places these days. They have the usual fried rices and general tso's, but they also have subs and sandwiches. Their cold cut is not bad and certainly hits the spot some nights. I am also a fan of the General's Chicken and General's Tofu. If you are looking for a quick delivery of something salty and tasty this is the place to go. I highly advise keeping the menu around if at all possible, they have coupons on it ranging from a free egg roll to a free order of General Tso's Chicken depending on how much you order. They never collect the coupons but you are not going to get the free stuff unless you know to ask.
google avatar

Brian B.

Yelp
Went here when I was drunk after kickball and was pleasantly surprised by how scrumptious it was. I mean the place looks like a shitbox but trust me it's a pretty good place. I would suggest only ordering Chinese food items because I'm going to assume that the gyros and cheesesteaks are not in their starting lineup.
google avatar

Dan W.

Yelp
3.0 stars:-)!! Good cheap Chinese and American food at reasonable prices. Enough said.
google avatar

Samantha B.

Yelp
Cheap, generous, made-to-order, American Chinese food. It's quick and the person taking orders speaks incredible English. Good drunk food or for girls' night in.
google avatar

Michael J.

Yelp
Johnny's is NOT a gourmet experience nor does it serve authentic Chinese food. Let's get that out of the way first. It is a neighborhood take-out house that happens to have everything under the sun - Chinese, burgers, fries, gyros, chicken, subs, etc. The service is fast and efficient. The food is tasty for what it is and the prices very reasonable. I particularly liked their General Tso's wings, which is what I ordered the first time I went there. Subsequent trips included fried rice, peppered beef, Szechuan beef and General Tso's chicken. All of them are pretty decent for a place of this caliber. If you're in the mood for some quick and cheap takeout food that will hit the spot, I highly recommend a visit.

Yelp
I hate to say this but I have not and will not EVER go back to Johnny's. it was the most convenient and delicious Chinese take out place ever.... Until--- I saw a cockroach having fun and running around on the menu on the wall. I notified the lady at the register and she didn't seem to care... I wish I never saw that big nasty roach in there... Eww... Bye bye Johnny's.... Lol

Elle B.

Yelp
Johnny's looks mildly terrifying from the outside, just like any favorite Chinese food delivery place would. Don't let the outside deter you. Do look elsewhere if you're looking for authentic Chinese food. Johnny's has "the worlds best cheesesteak," among other things, so use some common sense. In terms of quick, American Chinese takeout, it is perfect.
google avatar

Beth M.

Yelp
Update. Now that I go to this place about twice a month, its safe to say Johnny's still kicks ass. Moving from 4 to 5 stars on account of how FAST they always make my food. (And also the cheese wontons are awesome!)

Kristina S.

Yelp
Delicious!!! Absolutely delicious. I've been looking for a good classic Chinese food restaurant in DC for the past two years. We ordered the cheese wontons/dumplings, which were very cheesy and fantastic (must try), and the general tsos chicken with pork fried rice (great sauce and perfectly cooked meat). I've never seen bigger pieces of pork in fried rice! Don't let the look of the storefront steer you away from this neighborhood gem. Oh, and, the price is right!
google avatar

Sheika Nikole R.

Yelp
This general tao's that I'm eating right now is so sub par that I almost took it back to get my money back. I wouldn't completely warn you to never come here, but only if you have a jonesing for Chinese food as this is the nearest one to my office before Adam's Morgan.

Patricia B.

Yelp
This is a very good Chinese food restuarant. The prices are reasonable and I have never been disappointed with the food or the service. Good eats...enjoy.

Yelp
Searching for a cheap place to eat late in DC was getting frustrating until we stumbled upon Johnny's. Sign said "Subs, Chicken, Chinese", Yep, that'll do. We stopped in and ordered Chinese. They had an assortment of other American food, plus Gyros, etc. The place isn't extremely clean or organized and the signs look like they're from the 80's. There were quite a few strange, loud, and rude DC folk wandering about and inside being rude to the people who worked there. We were thinking Ok this is gonna be really bad, or surprisingly good. We were happily surprised; it was really good! My teriyaki chicken was mixed with peppers and onions - GREAT! Slightly spicy and flavorful. I never eat Chinese leftovers because I think they get gross, but I ate all of this the next day. There wasn't enough chicken in the mix though. My boyfriend also enjoyed his General Tso's chicken. A little less than $20 for our two dishes, which came with two white rices, I also got a fountain lemonade (bad, don't get it, tastes like melted artificial candy)... so a decent price for all that. I'd def get take-out if ever in that part of the city again.

Jeff B.

Yelp
While not the most aesthetically pleasing interior or exterior, the food was quite good. I took the advice of others here and tried the General Tso's chicken. The service was fast, and the chicken was better than the vast majority of take-out places around town. In short, don't let the look of the place scare you off.

Laura S.

Yelp
This is one of those Chinese take-out places that has many other things on their menu. We came here because the taco place on the other block was closed. My husband wanted Chinese, but since I wasn't in the mood for that, I made the mistake of ordering a turkey sandwich. The turkey was a consistency I had never seen before, which made me think it came out of a can? Some yellow American cheese on top of mystery meat, really unappetizing and a waste of money. If I ever find myself here again, it will definitely be for Chinese food ONLY.
