The Best Hot Dogs In Philadelphia - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"It may shock you to hear this, but there’s only one place in town where you can get a hot dog topped with a fish cake: Johnny's Hots in Fishtown. Ok, so maybe it’s too niche to be a revelation, but this nontraditional hot dog is pretty delicious. They put a crispy cod and potato nugget on a split hot dog and top it all with a slightly sweet crunchy peppery hash. The loaded-up dog is the cheapest surf and turf you’ll find in Philly ($7.25), and it’s worth the wait in line every time." - candis mclean

The Hottest Hot Dogs of Philly

"This stand along the Delaware River can’t be missed. A treasure of the Philly community for over 60 years, one of its most celebrated menu items is considered a Philly throwback: a fried fishcake atop a hot dog (or sausage)." - George Banks-Weston

The 13 Best Roast Pork Sandwiches In Philadelphia

"Whether you’re team spinach or team broccoli rabe, the roast pork at Fishtown's Johnny Hots is so good that any sandwich argument will quiet down. For just $10, you get a generous amount of perfectly salty meat balanced out by the slightly sweet, soft roll. You have to pay for add-ons ($1 each for sharp provolone, broccoli rabe, or spinach), and they have a shocking amount of topping options. But stick with something classic." - candis mclean

Johnny's Hots - Review - Fishtown - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Whether you’re team spinach or team broccoli rabe (debate amongst yourselves) or your out-of-town friend can’t compute that although it’s on a hoagie roll, it’s not a hoagie, the roast pork at Fishtown's Johnny Hots is so good that any sandwich argument will disappear. For just $10, you can get a generous amount of perfectly salty meat and beautifully balanced out by the slightly sweet, soft roll. To create a classic roast pork, you’ll have to pay for add-ons ($1 each for sharp provolone, broccoli rabe, or spinach), and they have more topping options than Katy Perry has hits. But with their pork as the base, classic is the way to go." - Candis R. McLean

I was happy to try Johnn'ys Hots for the first time today even though I've been in the neighborhood for years. I heard that the hot sausage was the pick for a top choice there. The sandwich was prepared fast and tasted fresh and delicious. The hot sausage had a moderate spice level with great flavor. I enjoyed that and a cup of coffee at Penn Treaty Park across the street.

Google
I've driven past Johnny Hots a thousand times and finally decided to stop in and give them a try. It's a cash-only establishment, but they do have an ATM with a $3 fee. I stopped in at 7 am, so I didn't have to wait long at all. The service was good and fast. The sandwich itself was pretty good, but for $7.50, I think it should be bigger. If you're in the neighborhood, give them a try. I just wouldn't go out of my way to come here. Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Google
(Hey Jonny if your going go on vacation or not be open please put up a sign at your place a week or so before you go it would be nice ) Great sandwiches here especially the hot sausage!!! Thanks to tommy sev who introduced Me to this place I come here a lot with my wife !!! Very good !!! Even the breakfast is very good the lines mite get long at times but Jonny cooks good and fast so you will be good !!! My go to is a hot sausage with the works or at breakfast hot sausage with egg cheese and fried onions with a side of potatoes ..you can’t go wrong here …if it’s nice out you can go across the street to penntreaty park sit down and eat your Johnnys meal ! Mostly all workers in line just a nice environment around here ! Also I don’t know who owns the atm on ur parking lot but tell them to keep up with that !

If you're visiting philly you need to stop at this long standing hometown favorite. With more than 60 years of serving philly, you're guaranteed to leave with a full belly, and a happiness in your mouth. Located just minutes from center city, 95, and Penn's landing. Johnny hots serves up delicious hot sausage sandwiches, along with cheesesteaks, burgers, and other delicious treats.

Google
This is the place. I have been looking for exactly this for years. It’s the perfect breakfast sandwich. An absolutely excellent family-owned and run joint with amazing freshly made and reasonably priced bacon egg and cheese sandwiches. What more can one possibly need? Great iced coffee too and a side of scrapple which was also excellent. Inexpensive too. I will be a loyal customer and honestly can’t recommend this place enough. It’s cash only, but very much worth the ATM trip. Don’t use their ATM out front though, it has a totally ridiculous $3 or $4 surcharge. Considering many of their sides/additions cost $1 or less, the first time I stopped by I actually left. I didn’t have cash and the ATM was just stupid to use. But a total 10/10 experience otherwise.

Google
Tasty tasty meat and mushrooms. Very crusty roll, I thought I was a soft roll guy but I may have been incorrect!! Meat had a great meat flavor but I would have liked more meat and a place to sit and eat. Lots of regulars getting big orders and one policeman, good signs.

Google
I’ve been going to this place the last 5+ yrs since my friend introduced me to this place. I usually get their hot sausage breakfast sandwich which comes with egg and cheese or the hot sausage sandwich off the lunch menu. I haven’t had anything else from them besides those 2 items. So this review is only based on these two items. Whenever I crave for a hot sausage this place is definitely my go to place. The price is reasonable and food comes out pretty quick. I prefer the breakfast hot sausage sandwich while comes the egg and cheese and I usually add fried onions to it. If you around the area definitely give it a try. The only con about this place is the parking. If you go during busy hours you might have problem finding parking. They do have a little park lot there fits about 4-5 cars but most of the time it’s packed.

Yelp
Parking can be a challenge and they close kind of early but dang it's worth it. This place is awesome! Roast pork w/ rabe, the hots and definitely got to get the hot fries with whiz. Everything is good. Such a cool tiny spot. No tables to sit and eat at but cool little tables you can stand at and the people, what can you say it Philly.

Yelp
Johnny's Hots are known for their hot sausages. You can get a variety of hot sausage sandwiches. On one of my morning walks to Penn Treaty Park I decided to stop by and see for myself if the sausages lived up to the hype. I ordered a Sausage, egg & cheese. It comes on like a hoagie roll. I also saw a tasty looking apple danish and grabbed that too. I sat in the park to eat my meal. I am happy to report that the sausage lived up to the hype. It is just the right amount of hot, not overpowering. And It's very juicy. The sandwich was made with the perfect ratio of sausage to egg to cheese. I devoured it! It was soo good! The roll was slightly chewy, which makes me think it wasn't the freshest. The apple danish was a tasty treat I'm glad that I ordered to end my meal with. The big negative to Johnny's Hots is that it's a cash only business. That's ridiculous in 2022. You lose far more business than you save in fees when u don't accept credit cards. I rarely carry cash, so I can rarely stop here for those mouth watering sausages. Such a shame.

Yelp
Favorite spot to grab a breakfast sandwich. Pork roll, egg and American cheese, SPK on a long roll (hoagie roll). Service is always friendly and efficient.

Jeremy D.

Yelp
Hot sausage, egg and cheese sandwich is a life altering breakfast. Kicking myself I didn't get a second for the ride home.

Yelp
Can I give this place a 10 star? WOW!!! I've been going to this place of business for over 30 years, when the father had a shack on the Delaware river. Now, the son has a very nice place further north, near a casino, with an expanded menu which can't be beat. Though I haven't had everything on their menu, the items I have had are the absolute best!!! I now drive an hour to buy his raw hot sausages to take home and freeze to cook on my Blackstone flat top griddle. I can't pass up the opportunity to have a sandwich of the same(of course it's cooked) while I'm there. I have mine with raw onion and ketchup. I've had their fishcakes (I don't normally like fish), but these are to die for. Hot dogs are great too, and they offer combo meals as well. They serve breakfast sammies too. I can only say that I wish this place was closer to home.

Yelp
Absolutely the best sandwiches in Philly! Johnny's has been around a long time. It's a fave spot of truck drivers, laborers, union workers and business people. The hot sausage is the best according to my husband. ( I don't eat hot sausage) He loves the hot sausage, egg and cheese. My son eats hot sausage with pepper hash. I love the fish cake sandwich with pepper hash! The fish cake has a soft filling and is deep fried to a nice crunchy exterior. It is delicious! What is pepper hash you ask? Well it's a Philly thing! It's chopped peppers, onions in a light vinegar sauce similar to cole slaw but without mayo. It gives the sandwich that little extra kick. Johnnys also does an award winning cheese steak, hot dogs and some other things. They have fountain sodas and tastykakes too.

Yelp
Imagine a really good food truck, but it's a building with a four space parking lot and two windows. I used to get breakfast sandwiches there all the time when I worked in the neighborhood and loved them. It is not fancy, but that's the point. They only have outdoor seating, and it's more like standing at shallow aluminum bar screwed onto a support column or exterior wall. Apparently they're known for their fish sandwiches but I think the hot sausage and pepper sandwiches are the best. The service is about as friendly as you would expect from a vendor at a sports stadium or food truck. It's authentic Philly. The service is very down to earth. My out of town family enjoyed the extremely blue collar experience on a sunny fall day. There's a cute park across the street if you want to eat farther away from the road. Penn Treaty Park I think it's called.

Yelp
Spinach, egg & cheese goes so hard for no reason. Can't miss breakfast sandwich if you're in the nolibs/fishtown area
google avatar

Joe C.

Yelp
Tasty roll, good dog, delicious kraut. I remember it was cash only at the time.
google avatar

Jon A.

Yelp
Your order is ready by the time you put your money on the steel counter. Could you really ask for more?

Jon M.

Yelp
I go once a week for years. Breakfast sandwiches are very good and staff is great. Parking is tough sometimes
google avatar

Daniel L.

Yelp
Still good after all these years. Crab cakes & hot sausage still delicious. But no longer inexpensive to eat. I gave up the crab fries because of crazy price and no more Arctic teas ;(
google avatar

Eleanor A.

Yelp
Love Johnny's Hots. Been coming here for a long time. Best fish cake sandwich, hot sausage, meatballs around. Nicest people work there . Prices are very reasonable.

Quiana C.

Yelp
Great food. Love the breakfast sandwiches!! This place is a must try! Never had a bad experience
google avatar

Gloria E.

Yelp
Went to Penn treaty park and found this lil stand across the street. While breakfast had just ended, I figured a few lunch items would hold me over. Asked about making a buffalo chicken cheesesteak, and they said while they didn't have blue cheese, they would use sauce, cheese, and ranch to make it. Also tried the meatball sandwich with parm and long hots. The buffalo chicken hit the spot perfectly. The meatball park was cheesy and saucy, with good quality bread on both. Cash only, and you have to pay for most toppings, but it's a good option for the park if you need a quick bite. Average price for everything otherwise

Yelp
Johnny's Hots is a classic Philly tradition. It opens at 4:30 am and serves up its sandwiches and other treats until the early afternoon. It's location on the Philadelphia waterfront across from Penn Treaty Park in Fishtown means there are always people driving by - including late night revelers who can take advantage of its middle-of-the-night opening hour. Johnny's Hots is takeout only so the pandemic has not affected it at all. And what to order here? .... well everything is quite good. But of course you have to go with their famous hot sausage. It reminds me of an Austrian wurst. Add some Pennsylvania pepper hash and long hots and you have one very tasty sandwich that shouldn't be missed if you are living in Philly. I also usually get a Philadelphia fish cake sandwich - not because they are my favorites - but because they are hard to find elsewhere and I want to support traditional Philly foods. Everyone has prob been to Johnny's Hots at one time or another. But if you haven't been. what are you waiting for?

Yelp
So I saw an article the other day about how Johnny's Hots had PA's best hot dog and I just had to come try it myself. I've driven by and walked by this place tons of times whenever I'm heading to Penn Treaty but never stopped by until now. I went during breakfast hours so I got grabbed hot dog with ketchup and relish and also a scrapple egg and cheese because I can't pass up any scrapple opportunities. I wasn't disappointed! Scrapple was crispy on the outside and perfect amount of softness on the inside. The hot dog was pretty good too - especially the bun!!! Was it the best in PA? Not to me, but it certainly ain't bad! I'm definitely coming back to try a hot sausage and a cheesesteak paired with an artic splash!

Melvin S.

Yelp
Great breakfast sandwiches. But for some strange reason, they have a problem putting the change in in a hand like mine. When a person drops the change, money or coins, just let it fall on the counter. If you can take my money then give it back the way it was given., Again great sandwiches
google avatar

Dale S.

Yelp
Great stuff!! Been there for years and a known spot!! I just seen it in passing in Philly!! Said I need a hot sausage sandwich from this place!! Good eats!! Bring cash as they are cash only!! Don't want to get stuck using the atm in the front of the shop for a 3$ surcharges. My mistake!! Good eats though!!
google avatar

Yelp
Hot sausage, egg, whiz , sauce is the go to breakfast sandwich here. You have to try it.

Yelp
This is the place I've been looking for their cheesesteaks excellent the chicken cheesesteak hoagie is to die for I recommend this place to everybody who goes to work and need a place to get breakfast and lunch
google avatar

Yelp
Been patronizing here for many years. I'm not a big menu explorer when it comes to Johnny's. My go to is a hot with wiz/raw onions/and the pepper hash. The flavors and textures with the spicy hot sausage , the warm cheese wiz along with the crunch from the raw onions and the coolness from the pepper hash makes my taste buds and senses tingle with enjoyment. Price is a little high at 6:50 for a hot dog (sausage) but it is damn good and the quick service is a big plus as well. Go get one!!
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Supporting the local family owned businesses during the pandemic still. Ordered a pork roll, egg, and cheese on a long roll with a side of long hots. Sandwich was cooked perfect with plenty of thinly sliced fresh pork roll and the freshest roll awesome. Long hots cooked on the grill were out of this world and tasty. Good to spot for all my fast food sandwiches and Johnny also makes a great cheese steak with good quality meats on the same fresh roll. If you never been there plan on stopping for breakfast or a lunch sandwich try a roast pork. If you want something different order a hot sausage, fish cake combo with pepper hash. One of the very few places with pepper hash.

James S.

Yelp
Best chicken cheesesteak in Philadelphia with long hots. Good enough that I still go even though there's a 50/50 chance of them being closed at any given time. They change their already buzzard hours with erratically and without notice. But, still worth it for the value.
google avatar

Lisa A.

Yelp
My dad has been going here for years. Admittedly, I wasn't convinced it was anything special. Well, I was way off base on that. We stopped here after an early flight and picked up breakfast sandwiches and coffee. I will say, this is probably the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had. The hot sausage has just the right amount of heat, the egg was cooked to perfection, and the roll was fresh. The young man at the counter was also very kind! Will be back.
google avatar

Glen F.

Yelp
I've passed this place a bunch of times and bookmarked it on Yelp. Finally made it here. Bit of a line at 9:30. Step up to the left to order and pick up from right window. The order line moved fast and I got mine in like 5 minutes. Both servers at order and pickup were nice which shows you can have great food and not allow yourself to be nasty about it like other places in Philly. I ordered the pork roll, egg me cheese on a Kaiser and a coffee with cream and one sugar. The coffee was hot and flavorful. The sandwich was a step up from the many food carts with good quality ingredients. Parking wasn't too bad since they have their own lot which I forgot was there and parked on Columbia. They have plenty of seating or you can walk across Delaware avenue to Penn Treaty Park and enjoy your sandwich while looking at the river that Washington crossed (He crossed a ways up) so we can have the freedom from England to enjoy our Johnny's Hots
google avatar

Denise H.

Yelp
Best Pork Roll, Egg & Cheese sandwich you will ever eat. A regional gem for authentic Philly eats. I'll be back for a visit soon and I think about these sandwiches prior. You cannot get Taylor ham everywhere and people non-natives have no idea what they are missing.

Matt M.

Yelp
I have been going to Johnny's for over 20 years. Best sandwiches around!! Great menu from the cheesesteaks, roast turkey, and of course the hot sausage. My go to is the hot sausage/Fishcake combo. Try it, you won't be disappointed! Very friendly staff too!
google avatar

Ryan B.

Yelp
It is rare that I am amazed, but wow is this place good! I would compare this to the first time you have sex, smoke crack or win the lottery. I had the hot sausage/Fishcake with onions, hash and spicy mustard. It was instant euphoria. I almost wish I never came here because I will never be able to eat another hot sausage from anywhere else again. Like a dope fiend loves the needle, I fell in love today. #JOHNNYHOTTSADDICT

Sonya B.

Yelp
Went there today for lunch, got the chicken cheesesteak. It was really good. Went back to work and told several colleagues they need to visit this place.
google avatar

Linda M.

Yelp
Freshest sandwiches around. Rolls never stale - made to order with quality ingredients. Fast service. Cash only. Scrapple egg and cheese on a long roll will start your day right.
google avatar

Miguel R.

Yelp
Poor service, poor cheesesteak, roll was tasty though. Went there today for the first time for lunch, and the employees get frustrated with you because they expect you to know the rules of the restaurant. Then I waited forever for a cheesesteak. Most good cheesesteak joints in the city know that speed is the game here. Sorry, not really for that. I'll try again soon, and hit up their pork sandwich, and see if things are any different.
google avatar

Chelsea L.

Yelp
I love Johnny Hots, it's a staple in the fishtown area. I've been coming here since I was little with my poppop. I usually get the hot sausage sandwich with spicy mustard and sauerkraut. My mom and grandmom love the fish cake! The employees are so nice and friendly. I love going to Johnny Hots
google avatar

Amanda K.

Yelp
Decided to try this place out for lunch today. Best hot sausage sandwich I've ever had, with some pepper hash and fried onions! Found myself a new lunch spot in Fishtown!
google avatar

Jonathan O.

Yelp
Had the hot sausage with fried onions and long hots and it was outstanding. $5 total and good enough to fill you up. Place just feels like Philly.
google avatar

Dave B.

Yelp
This has become a staple of my diet since I moved back to Fishtown. I know it's probably not good for my summer body that I'm still working on (life long progress) but this is a good addiction. The hots are absolutely the best for breakfast or lunch and top that off with the spicy horseradish sauce, you will be in heaven! If you want to be more daring then get it with the fish cake! Fries are always crispy and the home fries is out of this world! The staff, I can't say enough, love them!!! So friendly, makes me smile and I love that they get to know you.
google avatar

Lou C.

Yelp
A very kind gentle man. Told me Johnnys is Open.. I can now resume my love for the BEST Hot Sausage in Philly..
google avatar

Justin L.

Yelp
I think the hot sausage fish cake combo is still kicking around my stomach from a week ago. While Philly is known for the cheese steak and roast pork sandwich, the wiser choice is hunting down Johnny Hots, where you can not only get the above, but get atleast the fish cake sandwich....adding the hot sausage will only make it better. My life changed on Monday when i was taken to Johnny Hots. Let it change yours too.
google avatar

Ronald D.

Yelp
This place has the best hot sausages. We got to Johnny Hots around 10:30 in the morning and first ordered a famous Johnny Hots breakfast egg sausage on a roll. Big mistake. It was an ordinary breakfast roll sandwich. Luckily I felt disappointed and decided to order the "Infamous" Johnny's Hots sausage. No disappointment there. World's greatest. I first heard of Johnny's Hot through Hollyeats dot com. He rated the cheesesteak with 5 grease stains. I, myself, thought otherwise. The cheesesteak was just OK for me. If you ever get a chance to try the sausage, do it.
google avatar

Walter K.

Yelp
My experience at Johnny Hots: I pull up to a tiny little stand off Delaware ave. It's populate with a bunch of guys standing around, mostly cops and construction workers, and a few people who have walked over from nearby. The menu has several sandwich options, but everyone seems to be ordering cheesesteaks and "the combo." I ordered the combo, a hot sausage topped with fishcakes on a white roll. I also got onions, long hots, and spicy mustard. My sandwich came out lightening fast, it was waiting for me even before I could put my change in my wallet. The sandwich was good, and I scarfed it down pretty quickly. I didn't love the combination of sausage and fish cakes. The fish cakes have an okay taste, and the texture of scrapple. I did like the sausage, but nothing was amazing here. Bottom Line: It's a good place, but not amazing. If I remember correctly, the hours are only breakfast and lunch during the week, and that makes it hard to eat here. The whole operation is really quick in and out, and it's proximity to 95 could make it a good stop if you needed to grab something before hopping on.
google avatar

Michelle J.

Yelp
Always hits the spot! Love getting breakfast sandwiches from here for me and my coworkers
google avatar

Fatty B.

Yelp
The Hot Combo - one of the best sandwiches in the city - a smoked hot sausage with a fishcake smashed on top with fried onions and mustard. Just man up and get it. You're welcome.
google avatar

Dan M.

Yelp
Good spot - ran into it and it's hidden in Fishtown area. Hot dog was good and made to order.
google avatar

Max S.

Yelp
Back again. No matter where else I go I still crave Johnny's cheese steaks the most. Their cheese fries are pretty excellent as well, as is their fish cake combo. Something about a paper carton of iced tea makes the experience complete. I cant say enough about their hot sausage, egg and cheese. Every time I eat one it reminds me of making them home with my dad, only Johnnhy's hot sausages are better than the ones I use. Service is FAST!
google avatar

Robert A.

Yelp
I had the Hot sausage egg and cheese. It was pretty amazing their pork roll egg and cheese is ok but definitely doesn't have enough pork roll, but not bad overall. The hot sausage is definitely where it's at if you like sausage you'll love this place.
