Loved, loved, LOVED coming here for brunch. Appreciated the variety of menu options, and the quality of the food was nothing like I’ve ever had before from a restaurant.

Went just after the children’s Halloween parade on Roscoe this past weekend. Ordered the Greek salad, fish tacos, and from the kid’s menu bite-sized mini corn dogs. The food was good, service great, and we left full and content.

We like to stop here and get yummy food and great service. Very cozy spot. Don't forget to get dessert!

All good was excellent - and hot! Pork Mac and cheese, double cheese burger, steak tacos, al pastor tacos and the harvest bowl.

Always enjoy our time at the restaurant and as an added bonus they have AMAZING catering. Definitely consider them for your next party!!

It was our first meal eating outside since Covid and it was delicious! I commend the staff and the way they handled everything, cleaning and disinfecting tables between customers, keeping tables at least 6ft apart, and all wearing masks! I had the lunch peanut bowl and my wife, the John's place chopped salad with grilled salmon, everything was really great and we felt very comfortable. Look forward to returning!

I ordered the lamb flatbread with a side salad. We got 2 cheese curds for the table. The food and service as great. If you go here, you have to try their skillet cookie. It's a thick & gooey chocolate chip cookie topped with whip cream, ice cream and caramel!

I have to start by saying the staff is amazing they make you feel welcomed and appreciated. We stopped there after a real bad experience with Anne and the manager over at village tap. Their drinks are good and the food is delicious.

Great casual classic neighborhood bar and grill in Roscoe Village for breakfast, lunch, and any time you feel like. It also has a small bar with cocktails, but the food is the main thing it seems. John's Place has more casual cuisine, but it's not afraid to get fancy as well. Fairly good prices on most items. There's burgers and that type of thing, as well as a few vegetarian choices to give everyone an option. A lot quieter than we thought it would be the last time here. It was still kind of early, but there were only a couple others. This place gets packed for brunch on weekends. Other times it's much easier to get in. We got lunch. It's about $8 for a basic cocktail. That's not bad for the hipster area it's in. As for the food, we each got the Build Your Own Burger. It's $13, and add another buck to make it an Impossible Burger. This was a good sized burger, and it came with a side. Even though some things here can be expensive, it's pretty okay compared to other places around it. If looking for a weekend brunch spot, this is a popular one. They're often not that busy or can be pretty quiet when it's not on the weekends.

We had brunch here on Sunday. We arrived just after they opened and were seated right away. The place filled up quickly. We started with a couple bloody Mary's. I thought they were just okay. They were a little thin with not a lot of tomato flavor. The spice level was good; I asked for spicy. I had one of the specials. It was two pulled pork enchiladas with two over easy eggs on top. They were so good! The portion was huge. I only ate one and I was stuffed. My husband had the brisket hash and loved it. If you go, make sure you are hungry!

I took a good friend yesterday to John's Place based on a suggestion from a co worker. It was excellent! My guest ordered the salmon, teriyaki that night, and I had the chicken peanut bowl. Both were very creatively sauced with a complex and enjoyable collection of spices and flavors. I was say they were equally complex and delicious. It's a smaller place but the service was impeccable, the waiter, the bus staff, even John himself! They all had an amazing attention to detail. It is rare that I wake up the morning after such a meal anxiously waiting to dig into leftovers, but this time I did. John's Place will certainly go into heavy rotation for me this year.

Everything my family gets here is great. I happen to love the stir fry and the chopped salad. there are options for even my pickiest eaters.

I've been looking for a new neighborhood place. My usual place has prices that have shot up 40% and service that is now nonexistent. I was pumped to try a new place and let me tell you, I was pleasantly surprised. Service was good but the food was fantastic. You'd be surprised by how many places will serve you cold food and don't blink an eye. You won't experience that here. A hot meal, hot potatoes, hot coffee, hot eggs, hot everything. It screams fresh and made to order. Would I do it again, yes. Many times over. A few blocks away someone stopped me and asked if I knew of a decent breakfast nearby. I told her that she would be extremely pleased with John's place. I told her I just left there and would be writing a review soon. I'll be back.

Love this place. But I had a wobbly plate with my fish and that made it a bit hard to eat. Otherwise this place is amazing, deserves recognition for the delicious food they make. I have been going to this place for 15+ years and it never fails to have great service. It is great for families, so come now and don't miss out. Also try their desserts because they are also extremely good.

We had a lunch meal with two other people. The restaurant was not busy - about 1/3 filled and they ran out of menus. The bellinis were ok. However, the fish tacos were small, greasy, and bland. The Greek salads had lots of lettuce but not much else. Expensive and mediocre. The service was good. The atmosphere I cannot rate as we had lunch outside and no one else was outside. My advice is to avoid it. Maybe the other items are better. Pricey and not worth it. Disappointed.

Love this place for a quick burger and a beer . Friendly , nice out door casual are and still affordable ... no wonder he's been around for years . My wife like the tacos

Diego was working there this weekend and he is great! What a helpful and kind young man. I am for sure going to come back not only for the good food but for the excellent service from people like DIEGO .

Overpriced for the quality they offer . I understand it's inflation but two American pancakes die 11$ is just outrageous.

John's Place is one of the city's gems. Comfort food with a unique twist that makes the selections familiar, unexpected, and delicious all at the same time. The breakfasts are particularly good as are the lunches...well, and the dinners, too. Frankly, it is all really good, but if you are there for breakfast go with the Silly Good Donuts, the Crispy Brisket & Palano Hash, and a Bloody Mary. Just sayin'.

A good place for comfort food and the service there was quick and friendly. When we went there were two toddlers doing what toddlers usually do-which is make a mess and our server took it in stride and definitely gave off a 'cool with it' vibe. When she got to us, I asked her what the soup was. 'Chicken avocado' Umm...really? Must avocado be put in EVERYTHING? Well, I like chicken soup so I ordered it preparing to be unhappy but was pleasantly surprised, besides the color the avocado just added a smoothness and body to the soup that was actually good. I got the Blackjack burger which sounded like it had a spicy kick to it, spice rub, pepper jack and a chile ketchup. Sounds like it had some heat to it right? Well, if you get it ask for Tabasco as well.

The best service especially when William is there. What a Chicago treasure! He's friendly, lovely, and welcoming. He knows the menu like the back of his hand and really cares about his customers. Also whoever wrote the review about the waiter pointing out that boys can wear nail polish.... I don't know how you turned a positive experience into a negative. That review, Katie L., says more about you than them.

I've been to John's Pmace twice because it's one of T's go to places for the Cobb or Southwest salads. For me it's the burgers. Food is always very good and service is friendly and attentive. Paul helped us today and he was great. Outdoor seating in the summer is very nice. A local place that many come to over and over, and I know I'll be back.

Really enjoy coming to John's place! Have been here multiple times before a Cubs game and I have never been disappointed. On my last visit for brunch I finally got to try their chicken & poblano hash which was amazing!!! I highly recommend it if you like the poblano pepper taste. It was basically shredded chicken, diced poblano and onions along with potatoes. Sounds simple but it is pretty good! My friend got the special of the day which was a salmon omelette which he truly enjoyed. We started off with the "silly good donuts" which is basically what the name says... silly good donuts! Good sweet appetizer to share and truly indulge in your brunch. Coffee is also really good since they use Intelligentsia coffee. The bill for 2 of us came down to about $45 which for the Roscoe Village area is not bad at all! TIP: On tuesday's it looks like they have some sort of $5 burger/fries deal! Not sure if it includes all the burgers or just some in particular. Burgers are really good here too so worth checking out!

After two weeks in North Carolina eating primarily Cracker Barrel I walked to this place which I hadn't tried before And will be returning. Recommend the double stack burger for all men!

12$ cinnamon pancakes tasted like baking soda and the waiter was inappropriate w four year old. she asked why he was a boy w painted nails and response was anyone can paint their nails, you don't have your nails painted, does that make you a boy? hmmm no it makes her a four year old who isn't wearing makeup or nail polish yet.

I'm in walking distance, but don't often order from them. The food is good enough, but their prices seem higher for similar menu items in the neighborhood. Their brunch is definitely great. They've started doing weekly family meal nights though. My wife and I sprung for the Greek Fest last night, $50 for 2 servings. There was a Greek salad, pita, cold apps like hummus + olives + a few mixed vegs, 3 small chicken and veg kabobs, a generous portion of pastitsio, and some baklava to finish. All of it was worthy of a Greek restaurant. Pickup was easy - well packaged in a large bag by the front door, and you schedule a pickup window. It was a little tepid (as expected for a huge meal prep), but we warmed the pastitsio in the oven while we tackled the rest and it worked out well. Well done John's Place! We'll be back.

I've been here numerous times throughout the years and I can't figure out why it's always so busy?! I have thought in the past that the food was bland and lacked flavor. I decided I'd try it again to give it another chance... and ordered a turkey sandwich. Um... deli turkey - and not good deli turkey (I am not a deli meat snob), but this seemed to resemble the prepackaged turkey that's shaped into a scalloped round. It was flavorless... redeeming the sandwich was guacamole and sweet potato fries... I would have done better with the grocery store for turkey. I tried a bite of the tuna melt which was not bad, but honestly, not impressed with the turkey... Service was friendly and efficient. I may return, but would stick to the hot items as I'm guessing they take more time with those (as evidenced by tuna melt).

First time here. I thought it was a popular place, but there was only 1 other table seated on a Saturday night. The food was poor to mediocre. My child wouldn't even eat the pasta because it was over cooked. They upcharged my daughter's kids meal because she ordered broccoli as her side (which was offered as an option). Very overpriced for a very underwhelming meal.

Our waitress was super sweet. But our entrees were brought to a different table. The table didn't think they were there's but in the meantime picked at the food and French fries. After they told the staff, they brought them to the kitchen. Two minutes later the brought the exact same dishes to us. The chicken sandwich was picked at and the fries were eaten. The waitress ordered us new food at free charge and took the appetizer off of the tab. The food was good, but we were not impressed being served our food that was delivered to and picked at by another table. As a previous server, this was not acceptable.

Some days it seems like my life is one long quest for fresh and tasty vegetarian-friendly dishes that'll put a smile on my face. The plate of John's veggie hash I ordered was incredible. However, the oatmeal pancakes my wife ordered were Devine! After enjoying every bite of my hash, my wife let me taste her pancakes...and I was hooked. She actually had to smack my fork away from her plate so she could finish her brunch. I'm already looking forward to our next trip to Roscoe Village so I can get my own plate of John's oatmeal pancakes!

Just no! I don't know if I ordered the wrong thing, but I ordered the fish tacos with beans and rice. It just was not good all the way around. The tacos were just blah, with the beans and rice totally bland with no flavor. There were 3 tacos on the plate, with a mound of rice, and beans poured over the rice. The presentation alone had left me standoffish, but I forged ahead, soon wishing I would have ordered something else within two bites into the dish. Service was ok, my drink got refilled, but nothing special. I probably would not be back.

The food was really great and everyone was super friendly. As soon as we came in our server was there to take our order. The building itself is also cool. There are unique oil paintings all around and the seating was comfortable too.

An excellent breakfast choice. Had the eggs and sausage with a pancake that was superbly prepared. Two had the granola and yogurt and were very satisfied. Fresh squeezed grapefruit juice a plus for me! A definite for a second visit when visiting Chicago

Hey I really hate sharing bad reviews because I worked in the industry for so long- but I can't deny that the food here was bad... like really bad. My boyfriend and I were really excited to go to brunch and John's place was close and looked promising so we tried it out... unfortunately everything we got was disappointing. I had the avocado toast which was literally just guacamole they put on a piece of warm sliced bread and it was soggy before i even took my first bite and they charged like 13$ for it.. i was so hungry I sent it back and thought i'd be safe ordering a short stack of pancakes but one of them was so underdone it was still batter on the inside. I was incredibly hungover and I promise you not looking for anything fancy but this food wasn't even edible. Maybe it's better for lunch or regular bar food... all I know is that I will never be going back here. I'm really sorry to the owners and staff for posting something so negative but your kitchen needs to produce higher quality food especially for the prices you charge. Friendly waitstaff and sweet atmosphere, if you can get better drinks- maybe try a homemade bloody mary instead of the mix, that could improve the quality of the experience but nothing we had was fresh or good.

Seriously awesome place. Local spot with a local owner. Staff all seems really cool and like they enjoy being there! Food is so good my girlfriend wants their cheese curds every day now!! Great spot in roscoe for families, and anyone looking for something chill with good food & friendly service. Will be a repeat customer for the rest of my stay in chicago !

Holy moly! This place is awesome. John, the owner, is always around to make sure everyone is happy. The food is incredible for breakfast lunch and dinner and it is always a very fun environment!

We love John's place. It is our local neighborhood spot we hit up very often and service and food is consistently solid. We have two young kids and John's place welcomes that and accommodates an environment that supports the chaos that kids bring without making you feel uncomfortable. We most always see John the owner when we go, and he is nothing but kind and funny. The folks that work here seem to enjoy their job, and genuinely enjoy being there. I tend to come during brunch because I'm obsessed with their options and my kids are up at 6:15; second breakfast helps the day go by well for all involved. I love this place and will continue to frequent! You should too! Side note and something worth mentioning is that one time I visited, I accidentally left a very expensive purse, that I didn't even realize I left until they did some diligence and found my husbands number. John himself dropped my bag off. Who does stuff like this now a days??? I was so incredibly grateful and think this is a testament to the kind of business they run here.

The service is GREAT, the food is ... not. I got a Texas mule & it was just eh, guac, and tilapia tacos. My partner got the black bean quinoa burger, which he said was horrible. The guac and homemade chips were great (can you mess up guac though) but was overpriced. Guac was $10 for 2 scoops of and a handful of chips. I did not like the tacos. The slaw was beneath the fish, which is odd, and I did not like the slaw. There was something too sweet, probably the carrots, that did not pair well with the fish. The black beans and rice was like Texas Roadhouse/zatarains. Although the service was amazing! We went with a group of 6 and they were super with moving tables and splitting the check. The waitress was lovely!

John's Place is the place to be if you like comfort food, a cozy environment, and a warm and attentive staff! We were looking for a place to grab a quick snack between errands. While we were looking over the menu a tall guy with a red scarf tossed around his neck popped around the corner carrying a box and asked if we were looking for recommendations. He then pointed out several establishments on the street and then asked if we'd liked what we saw on the menu here. My wife said she was looking for more of a bakery or place to grab something to go since we just wanted a snack and not a meal. He then said "well, this is my place, come on in and have a snack!" She replied, "That's okay with you that we don't get a whole meal?" He smiled and said "Of course! Get what you'd like!" We were of course sold by his geniality, but also that he took the time to point out other establishments before his own, genuinely just trying to help us find what we need. That's the kind of hospitality and community spirit that we love! I assume that was John that we met, since he told us it was "his place," and I'm thankful for our chance encounter because the food was just what we needed, the place is adorable, the staff was great, and now we know where we can get some brunch! Stopped by here on accident because my original destination had a long wait. What a great decision. Had the cowboy burger and a few beers with some friends. The food was excellent. One of the best burgers I've had. I don't necessarily know what I was expecting but my hopes weren't all that high.. just wanted to enjoy the nice weather on their patio. Burger ended up being amazing. Beers were ice cold. Patio setting was great. Service was excellent.. our server was Rachel. She was super nice and very on top of her game. This place has great vibes. I'll definitely be coming back here regularly now. Super cool neighborhood spot with a nice outdoor seating section, great service and delicious food. Definitely would recommend to anyone.

Came here over the weekend for lunch and had a really nice time. I had the shrimp Cobb salad which was pretty good. My fiancé had a breakfast bowl and was pleased as well. Nice ambiance but I can't help but compare it to the one that was by DePaul for many years on Webster- only wish that location was still open!

I'm confused how this is only 3.5 stars. The food is fantastic and the service is amazing. My fiancé and I love this place. Seriously - go there, eat inside, and just watch how many locals come in to pick up their to go orders and chat with the folks working there. People whine too much on Yelp. This place is great.

We were excited to support local businesses so went to Johns for dinner. Very good crab/shrimp roll and fries. The buttered New England roll that it's served on was delicious and very authentic to a seafood roll you'd get back East. Also tried the harvest bowl and it was good but would suggest adding a protein.

While I"ve enjoyed many plates of chilaquiles at their Lincoln Park location,* this was the first time I visited the Roscoe Village John's Place. We got there pretty late by brunch standards (around 2pm on a Saturday) so we were able to avoid the crowds and lots of small children that frequent John's Place. The service was speedy and it turns out their chilaquiles are just as tasty as they are in LP. I stopped here for a late lunch with a friend and loved it. I sat on the patio and the staff was wonderful and the food and drinks were amazing. Great quiet atmosphere. A place I will come back too in order to try other items on the menu.

A nice quaint corner restaurant in the heart of Roscoe Village. John's was packed inside and out on a Sunday at 2/230pm. We were seated promptly. The menu is small, page one more sugary/breakfast food such as pancakes & donuts, with page 2 being for the burgers. My boyfriend ordered the Cowboy burger and I built my own traditional burger. The burgers come with Lettuce, tomato, and pickles. I asked for no tomato. I saw no option for raw onion, but asked if they could give me that in lieu of sauteed, which they were accomadating. American cheese and bacon to finish it off, with a doneness of medium rare. My burger came out with just the raw onion I asked for, and was missing the lettuce and pickles. It took a while for the waitress to bring back the missing vegetables, so my burger sat there uneaten. When I ate the burger, it was a dry medium rare, which is a sign that when they pressed the patties, they did so too hard. My boyfriend's burger was messy with a lot of the Merkt's pub cheddar, onion jam, and chipotle sauce. He wound up scraping his pattie off with excess toppings. All in all, John's Place is average, and nothing special. I'm not saying boo to it, but I wouldn't consider this a must stop with all the other restaurants on this strip.

We wait every week to come and enjoy brunch in this place, is amazing!! Service was on point and drinks never disappoint!!

After an evening of beer drinking and jousting at the Oyster Fest, I wandered into John's Place with some friends since they were one of the last locations that had oysters left. The place was packed as well as the outdoor seating areas, but it was a great atmosphere. I had a great waitress who quickly ushered us out an order of a half dozen oysters and she even tolerated my annoying Brother, whose jokes can be funny but slightly offensive/creepish! I didnt like that they didnt have melted butter for the oysters, but, oh well! I love them though because I actually ended up leaving my tablet here by mistake (well, my Brother did) and John actually took it and kept it for us! I was terrified initially since I had no idea where we couldve put it down at or who couldve picked it up! Needless to say, it is safe and sound back in my possession. I just saw that they have Saturday and Sunday brunch as well; Ill be checking that out soon!

Loved. Get out there before summer ends to enjoy the outdoor deck. Then order a $5 beer on tap and get the guac with chips to start. Get the cowboy burger, shrimp & crab roll, lamb frat bread with taziki sauce, or cowboy burger. All very good. Pick from a choice of reg or sweet potato fries. Very good. Would come here again. We all loved our food, drinks, service, and atmosphere here here.

Support them during the pandemic, but DO NOT order delivery from their website. They use Chow Now, which fraudulently makes you think they are the delivery company-- you are paying a marketing company, who pays a delivery company - Door Dash. We deleted Door Dash from our phones because the food has always been cold and late (40 minutes late tonight-- and 4 phone calls later we figure out what happened). Support John's Place and pick up the food yourself! By the way, Chow Now has an F rating from the BBB (just filed a complaint there as well... happy Friday night)

Johns place is DELICIOUS! We have eaten here multiple times the past few months since moving close to this establishment. This restraunt has such a wide variety of options to choose from. We have been to Johns Place at all different times of the day and have always been pleased with our food! The servers are always very attentive and kind. I love how clean and fresh this place is! I would definitely recommend this place!

Salmon and meat loaf were terrific. Service was great. Very family friendly. John was hanging around which is always nice.

Two words- bug spray. We had an ok meal and then my husband watched a cockroach crawl across the back of my seat & we immediately left. We won't be back & there is no need for the restaurant to contact us. Yuck!

Stopped by here to sit outside and grab a burger. Server comes out and starts petting a customers dog while asking if he can serve me. Left immediately
