We dined at this location twice, and let me just say, our recent visit last night gave us a 5-star impression of the place. Jonathan himself was there making his rounds at all the tables to check in and chat. We learned about his family, and history in Houston; we learned his grandson is the chef at this East End location, and his daughter's wine is available on tab. It's truly a family restaurant.
My favorites so far are their cheesy grits, parmesan crusted snapper, and giant wedge salad (sans bacon). And their house wine on tap - only $10. There are so many options on the menu, ranging from seafood, steaks, pasta, and homestyle plates, like chicken fried chicken. The menu also pays homage to the neighborhood, with the chicken tortilla soup, soup de Julio (creamy pobano soup), Mexican pizza, jalapeno redfish, along with a "new Houston" section of the menu.
They have a large patio, fire pits, a full bar with seating (and a few TVs), but thanksfully no TVs in the dining room. That's such a distraction. Happy hour is 2pm-6pm at the bar and patio only.
I hope this location does well in the East End, as we need more diverse food options... Welcome to El Segundo barrio, Jonathan's The Rub!
