Houston's Restaurant & Bar Openings 2024

"Jonathan’s The Rub’s newest location has made its debut in the East End neighborhood. Here, they’re serving Brooklyn-style pizza covered in chorizo and serrano peppers. But like its sister locations, the menu will still have everything from Gulf Coast seafood to a big ol’ ribeye. " - chelsea thomas, gianni greene

Google
Yo 5 stars all around! Houston we have another restaurant to be proud of! Shout out to the chef, the food was amazing. I had the Chicken Parmesan and the wife had the gumbo. She’s not much of a foodie like me, but she couldn’t stop smiling at her food!

Google
Fantastic food, delightful menu, always great food choices in a variety of genres. Don't miss Julios soup or the chicken picatta, great wine list. Very impressive but they actually carry Mark Herold wines, while you're there, make sure to try his Uproar Cabernet. 🤘

Google
In a location that has struggled to find a lasting tenant, I think Jonathan's may have finally solved the riddle. A great menu with diverse options from the appetizers to main courses, everyone should be able to find something to their liking. Beautiful spacious patio for those good weather days, and ample bar seating too. Great place for drinks and snacks, brunch, lunch or a sit down dinner.

Google
A fine restaurant in Eado. We have been here twice, once for brunch and once for dinner. They have nightly specials. We had spectacular service by Scarlet. We got to meet the chef. I can safely recommend anything on the menu. The steaks have been cooked perfectly, the Dr. Pepper pork chop is delightful. The fish and chips are stunning. Chicken and waffles are my weakness. The Mac and Cheese is ooey gooey love in a bowl. You'll love the dining experience here.

I went by myself, I sat at the bar and ordered. The service and food were excellent! I can't wait to go back. I ordered the bacon mac n cheese and the steak and cheese sandwich. I ordered the Nutella cheesecake for dessert. The cheesecake was good, but you don't taste the Nutella. The mac n cheese was rich and delicious. The sandwich was hot and fresh. Very welcoming staff and vibe was bubbly!

JTR is at the very top of my preferred places to eat in EaDo, and I’ll tell you why. Let’s start with what you’re coming for: the food is absolutely phenomenal, I have never been let down by this place, from their smash burgers on Monday, to their Thursday steak nights, and even their happy hour deals. This place’s experience with crafting a menu shows and, simply put, you can’t go wrong. I typically sit outside with my dog whenever I come, but the interior of this place feels very upscale and relaxed. The entire vibe of the restaurant is amazing, but I think a lot of that is forwarded by my next point. The staff and management at this spot have to be the best that I have experienced for a restaurant in Houston, and it’s not even close. From the servers, to the chef, to the management, to the owner, everyone cares and they embody what it means to deliver a good dining experience. I hold no reservations giving this place a perfect rating and challenge you to try it out for yourself.

Google
Thursday Night, Steak Night . . . so yummy, definitely picture worthy! We are coming back again this week. It was a great deal, the food was amazing and loved the restaurants vibe / atmosphere! Definitely worth going downtown for this one! We added the wedge salad and the crab cakes, loved the wedge, but the crab cakes were not our favorite (we are picky crab cake eaters). You don't even need it because the steak was so amazing!

Google
Why oh why did I wait so long to try this place. Had super good service with Tori. Try to see the cocktails and they were all good. Had dumplings, absolutely phenomenal be sure to get the steamed or you don't get the nice ponzi sauce. Also had mac and cheese, very nice very very nice. The start of the meal though was the burger and fries. Jonathan's rub, was the front and center seasoning. Seems like we had onion rings too. The burger was absolute perfection the fries were right there with it. We would have been sad if we would have missed the fries. We're going back again soon as we can.

Yelp
The food was awesome and the service was fantastic. The interior of this restaurant is exquisite!! Not sure if it matters to you but the went straight to #1 in my book because there is hot water in the restroom. Sedia was our waitstaff and she was awesome.

Yelp
Started in the bar area for a Saturday HH. Small bites with beers and bourbon on ice. Then we moved over to the restaurant for a Saturday dinner. Husband and I split the Chicken Fried Chicken. Son had the fish and we got a bowl of the Brussels sprouts for the table. The service here was great and very attentive. The ambiance is causal and warm friendly. Lots of free parking. I highly recommend this place.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our dinner here! We came early since we have the Bebe now and the entire staff was very sweet and very accommodating. We ordered the ceviche as our app and it sadly was the least favorite item we ordered. It was extremely spicy even though there were no jalapeños in it. I think they went overboard on the cayenne pepper even though it wasn't necessary. Favorite dish of the night was the Denver roast! It fell apart and with the gravy and mashed potatoes-chefs kiss! Would highly recommend this dish! Hubby got the special of the night which was the surf and turf. The steak was cooked rare which is what we wanted but we noticed the ends of the steak were dry. The center was def more tender. It came served with an Oscar hollandaise sauce so that helped a bit with the dryness. The restaurant is spacious and super cute. Parking is easy so that's another plus as well. This concept is def more casual compared to their other locations!

Yelp
Had the opportunity to eat her twice in the last two weeks, once for dinner and once for lunch. Both occasions were stellar with a vast and well curated menu. Service is superb, with customers clearly at the forefront. The dining room is well appointed with a feel somewhere between casual and formal. Appetizers are plentiful and varied. We had two shrimp numbers, a sweet chili and bbq. Surprisingly the bbq version packed some fire with sriracha notes in the sauce. Steak night is Thursday and when in Rome...steak arrived sliced with crispy smashed potatoes and for me mushrooms (not the standard side on the special but they want you to have what you want). Just yum. On my lunch outing I opted for one of their two course specials. Great deal! Appetizer and main course. For me that was a pork tenderloin pounded then with a Parmesan crust and a lemon cream sauce. Absolutely stunning.

Yelp
Came here on whim after walking my dog. Brought him on the patio without issue, star was very friendly. The service was excellent, very attentive staff. The food was great, they were doing steak night and it didn't disappoint!

Yelp
Had the most satisfying dinner yesterday at this restaurant! Loved the vibes, dressy casual and an elevated atmosphere but not stuffy. I was delighted to see so many of my favorite items on the menu, such a good variety of comfort food classics from soups, salads, pastas, pizzas, steaks, burgers and some interesting dishes labeled "New Houston" and seemed to have a lot of seafood (snapper, redfish etc). Each category I just mentioned had several different options and there were sauce options for the steaks and different sides and appetizers etc. I'd classify this as elevated American comfort food and you'll be hard pressed to not find something you'll enjoy. We went all in as this was our anniversary celebration. We dined on the Soup De Julio which is like a chowder soup (DELICIOUS) and sweet chili shrimp for appetizers and then tried the Denver roast and chicken fried chicken for mains w individual sides of Brussels and Mac and cheese. SO much food. We definitely had leftovers of everything but every bite was so satisfying. Now roast isn't something I'm super into but wow did that red wine sauce with the mashed potatoes hit all the right notes and hubby agreed it was excellent. The chicken fried chicken is a large butterflied fried breast and well seasoned (both meat and breading). The portion is more than enough for 2 people, my husband is somewhat of a connoisseur of this dish and he rated it highly compared to others. We ended the night with the Nutella cheesecake which was rich and surprisingly not as sweet as I expected. All desserts are made at the Campbell location per our waitress and sent out to the others on a daily basis. Our drinks were the mezcal old fashioned and I tried the cosmo-naut (cosmopolitan) and we enjoyed these as well. The only criticism we had of the food was the bacon on the Mac and cheese was a bit too hard/thick for our tastes. And also they wouldn't give me the soup recipe so I'll just try my best to recreate this dish at home lol. But honestly overall everything tasted amazing and our food came out really quickly. The restaurant seems to be a local favorite w groups of friends etc at the dining room and the bar area was definitely getting a lot of action with the Cotton Bowl playing. Although other Jonathon's locations are closer to us I think we were so impressed w this one we'd come out here in the future, definitely so many other options on the menu I'd love to try.

Yelp
Really cute place, out waitress was prompt and nice. The passion fruit mimosas were ok - the juice tasted like Goya. I got the pork belly eggs Benedict and it was ok - the pork was a bit dry but the potatoes on the side were perfect. My husband ordered the steak and eggs which were good - probably the best dish ordered in our group. The food isn't the best but isn't the worst by no means. It was a pretty ok brunch. Nothing mind blowingly delicious

Yelp
Yummy dinner with family on a Sunday! There was no wait, our server was friendly. The restaurant was a little too noisy because of a party or special event, but we still had a really great time.
google avatar

Briann R.

Yelp
Okay I could say a lot about this place... great service, chill vibe, good food, but let me talk about the GRILLED WATERMELON that came with the mahi mahi.... It made the dish, fish was perfectly cooked and the rice was delicious but the watermelon pulled it together in a way I wouldn't imagine. I almost ate the rind.

Yelp
We dined at this location twice, and let me just say, our recent visit last night gave us a 5-star impression of the place. Jonathan himself was there making his rounds at all the tables to check in and chat. We learned about his family, and history in Houston; we learned his grandson is the chef at this East End location, and his daughter's wine is available on tab. It's truly a family restaurant. My favorites so far are their cheesy grits, parmesan crusted snapper, and giant wedge salad (sans bacon). And their house wine on tap - only $10. There are so many options on the menu, ranging from seafood, steaks, pasta, and homestyle plates, like chicken fried chicken. The menu also pays homage to the neighborhood, with the chicken tortilla soup, soup de Julio (creamy pobano soup), Mexican pizza, jalapeno redfish, along with a "new Houston" section of the menu. They have a large patio, fire pits, a full bar with seating (and a few TVs), but thanksfully no TVs in the dining room. That's such a distraction. Happy hour is 2pm-6pm at the bar and patio only. I hope this location does well in the East End, as we need more diverse food options... Welcome to El Segundo barrio, Jonathan's The Rub!

Yelp
First time here and it was delicious! The parmesan crusted pork was surprisingly very light, even though it was fried. The veggie pizza (I added pepperoni and sausage to make it a supreme) was large for a 14 inch; easily could have been shared with two or, maybe, three people. The bell peppers were sliced super thin, which was nice because they weren't overpowering when biting into them. 10/10 would highly recommend and we will be back!

Yelp
Thursday steak night was super delicious - big portion + comes with green beans + potatoes + salad. I celebrated my birthday here + the service was great. ceviche was also great. the drinks are the reason I came back here to try the food menu.

Jonathan B.

Yelp
Well I came in sat here now 30 mins as I sit in now and it took forever for anyone to acknowledge or wait on my party would have loved to review the food but never got to order

Donna L.

Yelp
Love this place! Went during an off time but still had great service from our friendly waitress, Tori who recommended the burgers. So delicious!

Yelp
First timer, and definitely not the last. Sydney, our server was delightful during our patio Friday lunch. For appetizers we selected the dumplings which were pretty good. While we awaited for our entrees I selected for the spicy basil margarita was perfect. Then I opted for the $25 two course lunch. The chicken gumbo was my first course and the mango salmon was my second were both tasty. Then for dessert the coconut cream pie with Americano coffees ended the lunch on a high note. Easy parking. Excellent location. Will be back to try their brunch.

Yelp
When we first walked in I was blown away by how pretty the inside was furnished, especially the nutcracker!! The service was so nice, Abby was a wonderful server. Jessica, the daughter of the owner brought our drinks and gave us background on the history of the locations which we really enjoyed, she was very sweet. The food was crazy, the french toast tasted like ice-cream and the portions were really good. We will 100% be back. :)

Yelp
Wow! I am so speechless by the amazing customer service I experienced. I ordered the Pork Chop for the first time. My lovely waitress explained the cooking process to me as I ordered, but what I didn't know was that it was going to be thicker than me! I was still very interested in trying it and I realized the texture wasn't for me. The waitress and manager wanted to remove the item from the bill but I refused because it was something I wanted to try. They still made sure I was going home satisfied and included a dessert to go! I was always going to come back, thank you for the best experience I've ever had. Just wow!

Yelp
Tried Jonathan's on Saturday for an early dinner and it did not disappoint. The service was exceptional, the food was top tier, and the restaurant wasn't too noisy. I tried many different dishes and everything was good and fresh with ample variety dishes. I will return.

John B.

Yelp
This place is an absolute rail. So glad we have this restaurant here in the East End. The menu has every dish and cuisine you could imagine with new specials every week. All desserts made from scratch. Great NYC vibes on the inside. All the waitresses we've had have been very attentive with great service - offering to take our food to box it up at the end. Delish! It's a reg spot for us!

Yelp
This is definitely one of my favorite spots. We had reservations for 7:00pm, we were seated, had a really good dinner and drinks, and were out of there by 8:00. The food was delicious and the customer service is for sure Gold Standard. The manager is awesome! Thanks!

Yelp
Walked in for a to go order. The bartenders were very nice. My martini could've been a lil dirtier, but the manhattan was ON POINT! I ordered the blackened salmon, mushrooms, Brussels sprouts, and meatballs to go. The ONLY critique is the meatballs were a lil too salty for my liking. Other than that, the food was freakin awesome! I saw a large group of people seated in the dining area, which is very spacious and nicely decorated. I highly recommend this spot for ant dining occasion.
google avatar

Ruby C.

Yelp
Ooooo ever look for a place where you can work, charge your laptop, phone, and spirit! Also chandlers bomb dignity af no cap say less espresso martini, keep em coming make you think you can buy a house in Italy. I had 3 don't judge me. Lied I had 2 but it felt like 3 because STRONG but sneak up on your strong, made me think that 5'6' young whimpersnapper guy I was taking to was about to be a baby daddy.

Yelp
This place is an all around 10/10. Service was excellent and the food was incredible. I had the chicken fried steak and eggs. Everything was seasoned and cooked very well. The restaurant was aesthetically pleasing and the food/drink presentations were beautiful as well. Jonathan's was truly a great experience, the best brunch I've had in a while, and I will absolutely be back!

Richard J.

Yelp
Had the red fish with mushrooms. Food was outstanding and the service even better. Great atmosphere calm and light for great conversation.

Yelp
Great menu with a good variety. Staff were nice and inviting. Welcome addition to the area, will be back soon!
google avatar

Yelp
Always a great vibe here, we come here for lunch as our office is nearby. There is not a lot of spots like this in the east end so we truly appreciate this gem. Service is always great and food is good. Highly recommend the meatballs as an appetizer, and the dr pepper braised pork chop. S/O to Chandler for always being an amazing server and taking care of our team.

Tracy W.

Yelp
The fish and chips we're phenomenal. Crispy on the outside, succulent and moist on the inside. Commonwealth seasoned, and the perfect texture. If you get the jalapeño bread, make sure you get it blackened for an extra flavor. The garlic bread and beer were phenomenal! Know that that appetizer is spicy just in case you are not into food with it. The decor is stunning and inviting. This place is designed to accommodate large parties easily.
google avatar

Cami P.

Yelp
It is small but has a trendy ambiance and bar. There were a lot of business dinners and the attire was business casual. We ordered the white mussels, blackened red fish and Seafood T-Bone. 5+ stars for the fish, 6+ for the t-bone. Our waitress was attentive and brought campaign for our celebration. We will be back. And I hope the seafood t-bone is still on the menu.

Yelp
First time here, Jackson served us and was very nice and attentive. We tried a little bit of everything and enjoyed it. Restaurant atmosphere was moderate noise and very clean, especially the bathrooms. Portions are nice size as well.

Art E.

Yelp
Even though we live almost in West University, we have gone to Jonathan's 4 times. Each time has been great. Love the atmosphere, the food, service and price. It is one of a kind in Houston. The chicken fried steak is the best and so large. The pizza's or also the best in Houston. Get to watch the man making and cooking the pizza. I am 80 yrs old and love this place. Will go back very soon.

Karen G.

Yelp
The service and food are so good! Been there a couple times already, recommending the Chicken Fried Chicken and the Sausage and chicken gumbo! Great cocktails as well, I go for the Strawberry Fields cocktail! Really enjoyed this restaurant.
google avatar

Andrew E.

Yelp
First timer over here and we'll be back! We had the gumbo and chicken piccata. Roman took care of us and he was amazing. He was very attentive and provided top notch service. Regarding the menu, he gave us solid recommendations for appetizers, entrees, and desserts. We hear that brunch is coming up soon so we can't wait to check out the menu on the patio once the weather starts to cool down!

Christiane S.

Yelp
We went as a group. The food was superb , the drinks were hitting the spot. Our waiter had a lot of patience because we were a group of senior citizens. We will be back. I highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Jeff G.

Yelp
Place is legit. Very nice inside. Patio will be super once the weather cools. I had Redfish Pico with bacon Mac n Cheese. Both were solid. Very solid. Strawberry Margarita was nice. Solid service. Food came out in a reasonable time. I would give them 4+ stars. Give them a try.
google avatar

Glen C.

Yelp
First time during lunch, ordered the two entrees for $25 which is a great value with great food including steamed and fried dumplings, watermelon and feta salad with our entrees of shrimp and grits, and chicken fried chicken. Discussed our appreciation for the addition of another great food establishment in the east end with Mr. Jonathan's visit at our table. The Rib will not disappoint.

K K.

Yelp
This was my first visit to Jonathan's. The seafood gumbo was full of seafood and perfectly balanced. The service was friendly and patient with our big group. The atmosphere is fresh, modern and open. Also, parking is ample and FREE. This spot is the place that stays in your dining rotation because the food is good and it has something for everyone. Next time we will dine outside on the covered patio. 5 stars
google avatar

Tommy C.

Yelp
If you want good service and food come here!!Chris, Chris, and Jahi were more than accommodating (the team at the bar.) Highly professional, patient, preemptive and prompt service here. I ordered the double pork chop and this one order can serve up to two people imo, I am very active in my gym regiment so I need LOTS of calories that taste great. The meat was so juicy, succulent, and tender it just melts in your mouth! Shout out to the staff there for treating me so well and making me feel welcomed!
google avatar

Diane G.

Yelp
I ordered takeout, my first time there. The salads that I had ordered were fresh and delicious. Customer service was great...can't wait to go back!!

Michael M.

Yelp
Great menu with lots of variety. Customer service is excellent every time we''ve dined there. Jane and Jarod are outstanding! Would highly recommend this restaurant

Kate K.

Yelp
What a great addition to the neighborhood!! The food was delicious, the service top notch and they have made the restaurant space feel upscale, but cozy. The seafood gumbo and tortilla soup were delicious and came out fast. We also tried the baseball sirloin, shrimp and grits and the Houston salad, all were really great. I have to say the stand outs of the night were the coconut cream pie and the chocolate cake! I cannot wait to go back! Welcome to EADO Johnathan's the Rub!

Brandon B.

Yelp
The food was good , service how ever was slowing and lacking, waiter was trying to sell us a bottle of rose even after we said we did not like rose

Michael D.

Yelp
Me and my girlfriend came for a date night here and were pleasantly surprised. The decor and patio is super nice and the servers/bartenders are all super attentive and professional. I had the burger and my girlfriend had the picatta. Both were very large portions and super good and worth the price. The fries were especially good. Jonathan the owner even came by to check on us and he was super nice as well. This is a much a needed dining spot in the east end. It was lacking in attendance for a Saturday night, but it did just open recently. If you live in the area, this place is 100% worth a try.
