The Best Barbecue in Seattle | Eater Seattle

"West Seattle has a nice little barbecue corridor going, with Northwest Texas Barbecue, Pecos Pit, Lady Jaye, and this unassuming spot on Fauntleroy Way. Here, diners will find terrific rib tips and chopped pork smothered in a barbecue sauce so tangy, it’ll be tempting to buy giant jars of it (which you can do)." - Meg van Huygen

Google
Tough to recommend this spot. Maybe I’ve been so spoiled growing up in the South, but objectively, the meats here fall really short. The amount of sauce masks how dry most of the meats are. Hope they can turn things around for others… Ribs: dry and overly sauced Hot links: decent but nothing special Chicken: very dry Chopped pork: pleasantly surprised, imagine their sandwich version is worth trying Brisket: not tender, not smoky, overdone with sauce Collard greens: tough and way too salty, should be slow cooked to be made tender Onion rings: onions quite skinny Cornbread: nothing to write home about, could have used some butter Mac salad: more bland than full of flavor, which some prefer Peach cobbler: nice of them to throw this in. Good but could not make up for the disappointing meal

Google
I thoroughly enjoyed the food, particularly the saucy and tender rib tips! Unfortunately, they were out of brisket, which seems to be a popular dish, so I’ll definitely have to return. Everything they serve is made in-house, including the delicious sauce, macaroni and cheese, and green collards. Will was incredibly accommodating and generous, even giving my partner and me extra food to take home!

Google
Had to-go a few times, trying to give it another shot but we're done. Pork is just okay, I couldn't even eat the ribs they tasted awful. Greens are inedible, and the Mac n cheese is insulting. Soggy, oily, bland, and not certain where the cheese is. Probably the worst Mac n cheese ever. But it's better than the greens (too salty). So much of our dinner went straight into the trash tonight, what a waste.

Google
I had very high hopes for this resturant after searching high and low for a good black bbq spot. I was disappointed to say the lease. Dry chicken and a cheap hotlink that was sliced up took away from the experience of having a hotlink. Potato salad was store bought taste like safeway, The baked beans were pork n beans drowned in bbq sauce and the mac was lacking. Banana pudding was extremely cheap and boxed. I hate this harsh review but after paying $60 for two plates it was hard not to. Great customer service though!

Google
We got a pound of mild rib tips, that were good. The meat could have been more tender but the sauce is really good. I was kinda disappointed with the amount of tips for almost 20.00.

Google
Small hole in the wall place. I had the rib tips, really good flavor, a little bit dry. Menu hard to understand. Order collard greens, tasted good but they didn't have any hot sauce or salt and pepper available.

Google
Unfortunately, they failed at my order this time. I ordered the chicken dinner which is supposed to be a leg and thigh I got a mixture of shredded chicken drenched in sauce that has an after taste. Received the same for the chicken leg kids meal. Did not receive a leg but a mixture of shredded meat overloaded with sauce. The macaroni and cheese is dry as well. I’ve had them before and it was on point. Not sure what’s going on now but this was disappointing. I ordered through DoorDash so they are aware also.

Google
I was craving bbq , Googled, and found this lil'bbq spot. It seems they have a good history behind it. I was indecisive and inquired some suggestions on a sandwich. The counter person recommended the pork, so I got the special. I forgot the name, but it's named after a girl. Josephine special, I think ; which is pulled pork piled with coleslaw, and it comes with fries. I took it to go and opened it up at the park, and low and behold, it was piled high with pork. Luckily, it came with 2 slices of bread because I had made 2 opened sandwiches out of it and still had leftover meat for another 2 if I had extra buns! The price was, I think, $13 + tip came out to 16ish. I highly recommend this lil'bbq spot! More meat for the buck! Thank you!

Yelp
I can't wait to dig into that mouthwatering sauce at my favorite spot! It's the perfect blend of sweet, smoky, and tangy flavors. Today, I'm switching things up and going for the pork rib tips, chicken, and hot links combo. All that deliciousness for less than $40, including tax and tips, and with two generous sides. For me, it's always a plate piled high with cornbread, collard greens, and mac & cheese. Can't wait to indulge!

Yelp
Awesome bbq. This is the best bbq in Seattle. I have been eating here for 10 years and disappointed.

Yelp
Well I went to jones Bbq for the first time in a couple years and I wish I would have saved my money, the ribs were so burnt and dry, it was very disappointing.

Yelp
I remember Jone's BBQ when it was located in the CD area..I remember Jone's BBQ when they relocated off of 4th Ave..I spent over way over for some good BBQ with all the fixings:greens, mac cheese, ribs(slabs of ribs) it was a"FAMILY REUNION" I ordered the works but the only thing I enjoyed was the Dessert..The service was ok to much..talking to other customers/friends who just walked in!!! But the interior was nice but not a lot of room for seating..It just wasn't Jone's BBQ that I enjoyed in the past maybe New management,New cook, New something!

Yelp
I am Karen Taylor and I ordered 5 pounds of brisket (tender and juicy) with medium sauce on the side. The woman at the store gave me a very scrapped together bunch of old meat that was not tender at all. She gave me 4.7 pounds of food that was very poor in quality and not at all tasty. I cannot serve this to my guests!!! She doesn't answer the store phone for clear communication . I will not be spending any more money with jones BBQ because of the lack of professionalism by this woman. I asked to deal with Angel because this woman has been consistently unprofessional twords me since I've been forced to deal with her. I want my money back. This mess isn't worth $214.00!!! Please respond asap. She is single handedly taking the quality of your establishment DOWN!!! I pre ordered an specified what I wanted, not some last minute thrown together display of old meat!!! I am absolutely furious at the fact that she has no supervision and is just doing the community wrong without correction. I been spending money with Jones BBQ for 30 years. This person needs to step down. Karen Taylor dissatisfied customer

Yelp
Great barbecue. Ribs fell off the bone and their sauce was delicious. Can't wait to try their brisket.

Jenni D.

Yelp
I ordered the 2 way combo dinner with ribs and small ends. The ribs were amazing. They had a perfect barq on the meat and it was very tender and practically melted off the ribs. It truly hit that bbq crave I was feeling today. My combo I chose came with my choices of cornbread and macaroni and cheese. The Mac n cheese definitely is comfort food at its best. It is very rare to find it cooked this way. The milk formed a perfect curding mixed along the cheddar. It was exactly like my mom would make it. It wasnt overly salty like how some Mac n cheeses are. My personal preference would be more black pepper and a small touch of white pepper, but thats personal choice.

Judy P.

Yelp
The food was awful. The ribs and brisket were not very tender, and the brisket was not in slices; it was in chunks. Some of the potato pieces were hard in the potato salad. The cornbread was dry and crumbly. What a waste of my money that I had saved over time to be able to eat out for once.

Yelp
So full disclosure, I'm from Texas so I understand that my standards for bbq are going to be very different than most people's here, and therefore I try to keep an open mind. To be fair I have had some decent bbq in Washington but in general, I don't have high expectations. But this place is bad. Like laughably, how does this place stay in business bad. The meat was drowning in bbq sauce (probably to try and cover up how terrible the meat was). The "baked beans" were literally pork and beans out of a can. The mac and cheese was an oily mess. I really hope that all of you that think this is good is able to travel South someday and get yourself some real bbq so you can see the difference. In the meantime, do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. This ain't it.

Yelp
3.5/5 Ordered on Uber eats Food came at a decent time. Ordered the bbq chicken with mac and cheese and greens. The portion size of the chicken was great but the sides were extremely small. Still not entirely sure if the meal was worth the price --- but the mac and cheese and bbq chicken were bomb. Also ordered the sweet potato pie and the peach cobbler. The sweet potato pie was great and hit the sweets craving I had. The peach cobbler was a big question mark. It was so hard/dry I could barely eat it. Hard pass.

Yelp
I ordered a pound of rib tips and when when I got home I'll disappointed I got more sauce then tip It's not the Jones BBQ let's cal itl West Seattle BBQ

Yelp
I ordered from the Jones Barbeque location at Lumen Field. The menu was very limited, so I ordered the Chicken Sausage and a soda. The sausage was very flavorful, but the bun was very cold. If the bun was at least room temperature warm, I would have been more pleased with the sausage. Overall, it was good for stadium food.

John M.

Yelp
Order it to go! They refused to let us eat at the only table inside and there were no umbrellas outside. They said the table was for waiting only yet they had several padded benches for that purpose. Not going back.

William G.

Yelp
Really good brisket, went on a Sunday afternoon and it was still fresh and juicy, service very friendly, great ambiance in the establishment.
google avatar

Stuart F.

Yelp
I keep coming back here and am always disappointed - usually due to lack of food. Time and time again their fryer is out of order. Or they are out of chopped pork. Or hot links. For a bbq place, they sure don't seem to be able to manage their meat inventory. Oh well. Down the street to the taco truck or Pecos pit. There are too many other options nearby to justify patronizing this joint.

Terri N.

Yelp
We ordered a two meat meal for take out from their website. The portions were decent for $21. It included 2 sides and a good amount of meat. We chose chopped pork + brisket for the meats and potato salad + baked beans for the sides. We requested mild sauce on the side. The meats were well cooked but a tad salty. The rest of the meal was hugely disappointing for us because everything was SWEET, including the potato salad. If that is the type of BBQ you enjoy, this is perfect for you.

Jenny S.

Yelp
Best BBQ in Seattle! The brisket is amazing. They also sell the BBQ sauce separately. Definitely will be back! Recommending to friends also!

Ashlee C.

Yelp
Do not waste your money here. Instead of communicating they were out of cornbread to me, they put two pieces of sliced wheat bread in my order. The mac n cheese was so unbelievably salty. The brisket was extremely fatty. Unbearable to eat. Waste of $40. They did refund the $4 for the missing cornbread though..

Yelp
Oh boy, here we go again... I've lived in WS for a while now and when Jones set up shop, I was super excited! I've had it the first time YEARS ago when they were on MLK then had it when they were in Columbia City, and LOVED it when they were in SODO, BUT now it seems the food has diminished in flavor. My last three visits have been a disappointment regarding food. Service is always spot on! The group there are always super friendly. But the food has taken a turn to the downside. I don't give Pecos my business because I rather support a small business but when Jones can't appreciate reviews and figure it out, I'm throwing the towel in. There's a group of us who loved Jones but after the last few visits, not so much. I ordered a two way and got rib tips and brisket w/Mac and cheese and potato salad. Super super saucy as if I asked for extra sauce. The sauce had a chemical smell to it sorta weird really. The m/c really dry w/no cheese and like scraped from the bottom. You can't go wrong with store bought potato salad. I hate to post this but if Jones can't their sh** straight, I'm sure they'll be closed for good soon! Just sayin...

Yelp
Not sure why our visits are few and far between... actually, it hasn't been 10+ years since my original review, but everything is still just fine and how I remembered it. Got the Four Way Dinner. You're supposed to choose 4 portions of meats but we got double order on the ribs, brisket and chicken. There's an up charge if you want double brisket so the tightwad in me spewed out chicken. They were nice enough to do sauce on the side so I could get a mild (16 oz) container and medium (8 oz) container. Enough food for the two of us to get two dinners. Still love the M&C, which I think is half & half plus cheese! No high falutin white sauce. I only k ow this because one time they were out of it and I said I'll just take it to go and bake off at home. Great job Jones, and bring back some cake.

Yelp
Best BBQ in Seattle! Plus the folks working there are so nice :) Enormous portions and actually spicy bbq if you're into that

Yelp
My family and I got meals here and had an amazing experience! We ordered ahead so our food was ready by the time we arrived. When we called ahead they responded quickly and were very friendly. This is such a nice little spot in West Seattle and honestly has the best barbecue I've had in Seattle so far. Although there isn't any indoor seating, they have a great vibe inside and the waiting space was quite pleasant in my opinion. I really liked being able to see their dessert and drink selection in the waiting area. My family and I got ribs, chopped pork and chicken (mild and medium). We also had a few sides: beans, Mac and cheese, and cornbread. The meat was cooked very well and tasted great! My favorite of everything was definitely the chopped pork (but that's just personal preference lol). The customer service here was awesome, the food was great, and overall, we loved it. I highly recommend Jones Barbeque to anyone looking for great barbecue in West Seattle.

Yelp
Had this delivered. Got the Famous Rib combo for 17 bucks (ribs + two 6 oz sides). First of all I appreciated that the food was packed with care. My sides (onion rings and mac n cheese) were placed in separate containers and the ribs were covered in foil which kept them warmer despite the slow delivery (I hate delivery apps). As far as taste goes, the ribs were very good. First off there was a very good quantity and they did not skimp. The sauce was very flavorful and the meat was falling off the bone. I found them very addicting. The onion rings were good. Crispy and well made. The mac and cheese was not great this time. It felt a little stale compared to the rest of the food. I enjoyed it overall and would definitely try it again, but only if I'm VERY hungry because it's a lot of food. The price is a little high but it definitely felt like I got my money's worth, it's just a really filling meal to the point that I'd probably skip lunch if I'm having this for dinner.

Yelp
This review really hurts due to the fact my family would come and eat the fine bbq meals that Jones used to offer. Always felt welcome. This passed Sunday was different. First we had drive 30 minutes to get there. I personally was excited to get there, best bbq in the North West. The employees didn't seem to care. Asked if I want mild, medium or hot sauce, at first I said hot but thinking my wife may not like hot. Grabbed a peach Cobbler and a cheesecake slice. I was a smiling customer all the way home, bbq was unbearable to eat. I am not sure why both employees just basically gave me a cold shoulder, didn't ask if needed anything else. Asked about pies and cakes the answer was just no. You cannot treat people like that just a lack of respect.
google avatar

Ben J.

Yelp
Quite possibly the BBQ I've ever had! And I've had a lot of que! The brisket and rib tips were so incredible I found I couldn't get it in me fast enough. Sides: Mac-N-Cheese and potato salad were delicious. Creamy, cheesey yumminess! Potato salad tasty and nice and cool on the palette. The service was friendly as were the people hanging out. If near Jones you must stop by and get some great BBQ!

Yelp
My husband placed a delivery order through the Jones BBQ website. The order never arrived and got a message that the order was cancelled and to call. So we called and they not only had no information about what was going on, they didn't care. The order never arrived. So we called for a refund and they woman said she put it through. But she was either lying or completely incompetent. The pending charge went through and no refund was ever issued. All we wanted was a bit of BBQ on a Friday night. What we got was a huge hassle, a business that simply does not care about its customers, and now a credit card chargeback. One of the worst restaurant interactions in West Seattle in 15 years. Never again will we make the mistake of trying to do business with these unprofessional, sloppy, unconcerned business owners. UPDATE: So not only did no one from this business follow up about this review or the credit card chargeback for the money they took for the order they never delivered, but it seems that this business is not above posting shill reviews here instead of addressing what is wrong. This recent experience suggests that the current management/owners have a very deep level of "WE DON'T CARE." God knows what corners are being cut in the kitchen. Customers beware.

Yelp
I had such a great experience here me and my family went yesterday and I got the rib tip dinner with Mac and cheese and beans super fresh and bomb the sauce is amazing I will be buying a jar of that sauce. My daughter had the chopped beef sandwich and the beef brisket dinner for later everything was sooo good and the service was fast I just wish they had it where u can eat inside other than that ten out of ten will Go again."

K. C.

Yelp
I called on an order on Friday to pick up Sunday. I get there and they have no record of the conversation I had with the person who took my order. So I had to wait for them to fix it and it was a big order. So I ask if they can throw in a dessert for me having to wait and the guy just laughed. Next time I'll go across the street to their competition

Scott W.

Yelp
Be careful using debit or credit cards here. They took my credit card for a Web order and let me drive there to pickup and only then told me they weren't taking Web orders due to a catering event. They charged me anyway and have had nothing but lies about refunding it. A week later I did another order and when picking up they had an order of ribs in my order which I told them wasn't mine. They said they'd take it off and again I was charged and can't get them to refund. SCAM.
google avatar

Tuan Q.

Yelp
Ribs and brisket were definitely delicious but sadly they have been gentrified, vegan greens. Yes. Jones would never have sold out like that. They went from numerous profitable places to one left.

Kev C.

Yelp
I use to go here regularly. Went there yesterday and was totally surprised at how bad the food has gotten. I ordered Rib Tips and a half Chicken. What I got was over cooked dry ribs and three Chicken Hind Quarters. Did not bother the tell me they dint have the half Chicken which should be a breast wing leg and thigh. Very disappointed will be finding a new BBQ place in Seattle.
google avatar

Kiesha S.

Yelp
I ordered the 3 meat combo...Chicken, Ribs, Hotlinks with BBQ beans and Mac & Cheese. The ribs and the mac & cheese were old. I couldn't even eat it! Disappointing! The chicken and links were the only items I enjoyed.

Yelp
SO I want to love this establishment, but I just...can't. The food - particularly the meat - is exceptional but the lack of QA is beyond me. Food: I've ordered food from Jones twice - once for delivery and once for takeout. Both times my order came with a missing side. the first time, I didn't get my cornbread and the second time I didn't get my potato salad. I wish I had the opportunity to share reviews on those items...sigh. As for what I was able to try, I was pleased. The ribs, rib tips and hot links are delicious. The spicy sauce is amazing. The meat is tender. The sides that I have been able to try are just okay in my book - mac and cheese and baked beans. Service: While the woman who took my order when I went in for takeout was pleasant enough, it took a very long time to pick up my food on a Thursday evening. I specifically asked how long the order would take and she said 5-7 minutes. I waited 30 minutes. Now, 30 minutes isn't THAT long but the right expectations were not set initially. Ambiance: This is a tiny store. Not a dine-in establishment, which has served this restaurant well during this quarantine period. Overall, I like the bbq and would love to support this black business. However, I'm not sure I can continue to do so as my order is perpetually wrong.
google avatar

Cristina G.

Yelp
I ordered this on Uber Eats to be delivered to my work. It was DELICIOUS and packaged clean and correct. When you received your food, you knew people had taken care to seal it off from any hazards that might occur. LOVED beef brisket with mild sauce and the potato salad. Next time i will order a large potato salad because it was that good. Arrived fresh, juicy (not dry), hot and tasty. Portion of meat was fairly-priced and generous in portion. Much preferred the food from the Fauntleroy location to the old location in Columbia City.
google avatar

Yelp
Happy New Year!!! We order the daily special - RIB TIPS!!! It's 2lbs of rib tips for only $12.00 and its good. Surprisingly. We also ordered the Mac-n-cheese and the noodles were mushy. Not so good. Sigh. The rib tips were drowned in a spicy bbq sauce. Super good.
google avatar

Hanna S.

Yelp
This is one of those places that brings you instant comfort on a gloomy/rainy day (which is like every day now in Seattle). I ordered the Mac and cheese, baked beans, and corn bread via Uber eats and was pleasantly surprised by the packaging and portions! The container with the beans was wrapped so well that nothing spilled and all the food was still hot when it was delivered (like I'm talking burn my mouth hot). The portions were also bigger than what had expected for sides and ended up saving leftovers for dinner. Definitely worth it! Y'all go ahead and support your local black business and order some food from here too!

Yelp
Mmmmmmmm, Jones BBQ has some amazing brisket. These folks really understand the true nature of slow & low brisket smoking. Let's face it anytime you roll up to a parking lot with a cloud is smoke plumming for blackened smoke stacks you can well assume your in for a treat. I strictly come for the brisket. It's meaty , greasy and it's meat soul has been rendered down for 12 to 15 hours of smoke inhalation for my flesh consumption needs. When ordering make sure you understand which part of the brisket you get. My recommendation is you get the larger fattier end for a more tasteful and if your one of those health consciences then option for lean end. And since I'm a no sauce kinda guy I ask for "NO SAUCE" cause I love the taste of flesh not sauce. The rest of meat pleasures are listed on the board along with daily specials. If you having a party Jones BBQ has party trays available but I recommend ordering in advance. The Jones know how to smoke so take advantage of it and eat smoked meat.

Yelp
Listen I'm from La and seattle is lacking with bbq like bad bad but park yourself at Jones they never ever disappoint

Yelp
The sauce made the chicken 10 times better potato salad was right on it was a good size lunch .

Yelp
Ambience. C Service. B- Food. A Price. A Came in at 5:00. Even though I called ahead. The order wasn't ready. And they got the order wrong. Gave me beef brisket instead of rib tips which cost me $10 more than I wanted to pay. They apologized for the wait and was friendly about the scenario as people lined up behind me and a roomful of people waiting for their orders. Apparently , by this time they were out of rib tips and hot bbq sauce. Sigh. And I think she said I couldn't use my groupon for rib tips as it's already double discounted. But I was going to have to pay extra anyway over the amount. I was confused. It was just a weird busy day.

Yelp
Reason for 4 stars: our food was cold by the time it was delivered (Uber eats priority delivery). We ordered Rib dinner and a Two meat combo (Brisket/Ribs) was really good and tender . The sides: baked beans (5/5) was the best out of the greens (3/5), and mac& cheese (2/5) was dry.
google avatar

Sam B.

Yelp
The pork was swimming in clear/yellow oil. The meat was mostly fat. Im from the south east, I've sampled barbecue pork of all different kinds. In my 35 years this was by far the worst I've ever shoveled down my skull. Definitely won't be ordering again. The cobbler was adequate, the greens were excellent. The pork was a soup of oily mush.
google avatar

A. W.

Yelp
Have ordered twice. The BBQ is good and a very generous amount (plenty for leftovers), though the sauce is too sweet for my taste. My second order (delivery) that I'm eating as I write this, is disappointing. I ordered Joyce's Special, which is chopped pork sandwich topped with coleslaw and a side of fries. It was tasty, but the meat and baked beans were only "technically" warm. There were no fries at all with my order, so I paid $1.50 extra for nothing. It wasn't worth calling and waiting to have it delivered. (After reading other reviews, it appears a lot of people also have had missing food items.) Very disappointed. Another issue, though not sure what can be done about it, the bottom of the bun is soaked to the state of obliteration from the sauce and juices. What is left is just a gooey, unpleasant texture. The top also gets gooey as the meal progresses. The bun could be better; it is "Wonder Bread" quality.

Yelp
Placed an order for takeout and this place delivered on taste and value. Ordered the 5 way combo and pork sandwich. Highly recommend the ribs, the pork, and mac and cheese. The hot bbq is amazing too. I seriously would put that on everything. This place is great value and best bbq place I been to in WA.

Larry W.

Yelp
Enough said.... if a picture is worth a 1,000 words...No sauce, terrible Mac and Cheese... Cold Slaw? Let's just call it Slaw...I'm going to Jacks BBQ. From now on... At least there I can actually chew the brisket and Jacks Mac N Cheese is the best in the NW....Sorry Jones's you can't keep up with the Jones's But I will give you 5 Thumb's Down....

Yelp
I'm from TX so being here in Seattle made me miss TX bbq. I like to order ribs and this place actually has the meat fall off the bone and I'm very picky about my bbq. My partner ordered the brisket and thought that it's a good substitute for bbq in TX. There's a more expensive place that claims to make their meats TX style (won't be naming it) and it failed to make tender brisket and fall off the bone ribs. Again, my partner and I are very picky with bbq. That place only has the food smell smokey. Wouldn't recommend that place. Here, the meat doesn't have the smokiness BUT the brisket and ribs here is far better than that so called TX style bbq location. Brisket isn't tough here AT ALL and the ribs actually fall off the bone! Love Jones bbq!!
google avatar

Clint W.

Yelp
All the items that are supposed to be smokey and juicy are so dried out. I don't know if I got leftovers or the meat was just over cooked. I liked the food from the place across the bridge but this one was not great. Not sure what the difference is but this is a big pass for me.

Yelp
Very tasty meats and authentic bbq. Affordable and quality. Friendly service. They even have apple crisp in single slices in a cooler in the front

Yelp
Amazing. Ribs were done perfectly and the sauce was incredible. Cole slaw and potato salad topped it all off and will order again!
